now whos being pedantic ?
It wasn't a matter of pedantism, it was more because it kinda made sense with either word (bar one being gramatically bad  ) ;)

Phew... I thought I was the only one that gets bothered by that.

That 580ex you were bidding on got relisted, and I bought it, tho I haven't heard from the guy yet.

Oh, and Kirst... Slinky + escalator = endless fun

to #1 - I'm seriously not the spelling police. hehe
to #2 - Damn, but cool that you bought it, but damn that he hasn't contact you. That reminds me, I'm still waiting to hear on a CD I bid for, win and paid for...
to #3 - Love it! I have done my fair share of running up the downward escalators, but never actually thought to tumble down them in a flip flop manner

Tonight I'm on fresh air and sunshine :p

On a random note, I'm a tad slow on the upkeep..

My PC comes with a lovely little (well, big) Windows Media Center remote that I thought worked only with said program. However, the last wee while I've been watching a TV series on normal Windows media player, and to make a long story short, it works with Win Media Player too.. ooo. I can pause, rewind, play, stop, tut-tu with the volume and everything. Fun

Oh that's a clever discovery. :p

Bring your PC around here...

I'd buy a PC now, but that would be my MK III money gone.
Or I could use some interest free.. Nah I'll build my PC eventually.

General admission? There is no other sort at Teretonga. Sometimes I think they should pay us to attend. The paddock is shocking. Getting it free with a BK just sums up the value of the ticket!! No accomodation down here at all and it will only cost you about $1000 to get down. Post it to me...;)

how long did you have both batteries out for? I seem to remember when my 20D went ape it needed quite a while with no power to get it working again - 10 mins or so should do it. Batteries out, lens off, no CF card - wait 10 mins & try battery again (leave lens off - you don't need it for faultfinding) if all else fails and you still can't get it working, I'd try a firmware update process - maybe the firmware has corrupted somehow.

Well what a long day. Brought a 6x3mtr white back drop way better result. Had 2 different models arrive and had to turn down 3 others. First model leave next one walks in the gate "What another model daddy". My daughter are so funny they went in and introduced themselves to the model.

Now to have a look at my work. The second model was so happy she wanted to pay me but as its not April I said word of mouth will do just fine.

one of the first things it does on boot-up is check the CF card for the presence of a firmware update file - wether it will do anything with it is another matter...

you're on the slippery slope to "L" eh?
I've never ever done a moon shot I'd be happy to print. Can't seem to get the focus spot on (I blame my glasses) either that or the thing moves across the sky a bit while the shutter is open so you end up with trying to use high enough shutterspeed to stop blur, so have to up the ISO and then it gets noisy. It doesn't stop me trying occasionally but I think I've given up hoping to get a clean shot of it. Probably the best composed one I took was of moon rising behind Mt Eden and the trig tower up there, that was with a Sigma 600 mirror lens I used to have and the focus wasn't quite right either.

i dont use high iso with moon shots cos it always ends up being a white glowing blob - i use low iso and moderately fast shutter (um today used something like 1/25-40th of a sec, focus just before infinity, stopped right down - its the only combination i seem to get any craters and 'mare's showing up

you tell me?

at first glance it appears that it is, i compared the moon photos mainly as i can take most wildlife and plant shots qiute well with mine

by the way, your shots of a gosling and goose near the top of the page you will find are actually a muscovy duck and its duckling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscovy_Duck)

that cloud photo is totally freaky - what do you suppose caused it?

and finally, what kind of 2x converter do you recommend? i bought one from trademe, the sort that screws onto the filter thread, because i didnt want to lose all my lens functions - and it was... shall we say... disappointing. it distorted the image with zoom blurs all over and made it look strangely bright and oversaturated.

the wide angle converter i bought was similarly unimpressive with a wide black vignette all around the edge which only disappeared when i zoomed the lens in to a similar configuration which was produced at full wide without the converter - and the image quality was compromised as well

so both of those went back the following day.

You lot are way to soft on canon. I had an issue with symantec last week. Got it sorted really fast when I got hold of the Country Manager. I even got some free gifts

Wish I caould be like that. I'm waay too soft too. Often try to get things by being Mr Nice, though obviously being Mr Nasty is better.

I've taken our 30D body back to Glam (which is who we got it from) and he's going to sort its repair with his rep at Canon. He's said hes never had a repair take more than 3 weeks and will ensure this one is the same :)

We shall see....

I thought that was the safer option - as me going direct to Canon would be much the same as Weka by the sounds of it.. lol.. I wont put up with their crap! :)

Virus Burster

Kirst has helped me loads, but I'm rather impatient, and having some issues.
Most sites refer to SmitFraudfix.exe to clean, however needs to be opened in safe mode.
When I'm not in safe mode, it comes up, cannot be deleted, and when I DO enter safe mode, my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Will try and find a wired keyboard. :p

Try bitdefender.co.nz - they have a very good on-line scanner and a removal tool (I think...)

For the IT gurus... stupid question: Can I use my D-Link (604T) wireless ADSL router the same way as a traditional router, i.e., to create a home network? If so, how do I set this up? From what I am told, the ADSL router simply shares a single internet connection among users and not capable of file sharing....

If not, what is a decent wireless router that will allow me to share/back-up files as well as internet access?

u can get a really cheap switch for home networking from pb tech (or anywhere probably) - mine was about $30 and it has 10 ports on it, one of which is taken up by the adsl router, and the others various computers etc

Not a silly question at all but I wouldn't define a 604T as "decent" - I use one purely to add wireless to my Cisco 837 ADSL router and it does a fairly average job of it. All I do is give it an I/P address and it bridges between wireless & wired networks. Give me a call or PM if you want more details. :)

I think as you want to use your site for glamour, you should also change the first image to a glam type shot.
I fully agree about the icons inside not being related to the actual gallery.

Well considering the 4x price tag you would expect a little sharper I guess, but yours does look softer than I would expect even for a kit lens.

What settings did you use? Do you have a remote shutter release, and did you use mirror lockup? I found that no matter what I did my pics were coming out like yours until I used the remote release and lockup. With the long lens, even the smallest vibration causes blurring.

i did use remote release but not mirror lockup - it seemed like too much fuss for such a relatively small zoom (compared to 500+)

my long lens is 10 years old - it has been well taken care of though and wasnt used much until recently

i also was shooting through a window... do you think this could have made the difference? *suspects this is a stupid question*

OK, what antifirus\antispyware\firewall etc software does everyone use? My Nortons subscription is about to expire, I'm upgrading to Vista, and I'm not really happy with how resource hungry Norton Internet Security Suite is becoming. Let's face it, Vista is hungry enough without loading Nortons on top of it.
Anyone used the free AVG Antivirus\Antispyware products? (Yes I am cheap....or is that broke?) Are they any good? Is the AVG combo + the new improved Vista firewall a safe solution? What other products do people recommend.
The trend suite is pretty cheap, and I always liked their comercial products when I worked with them a few years back. But I really am broke at the moment so AVG is interesting. (I got Vista and Office 2007 for free, Thanks Bill!)

The trend suite is pretty cheap, and I always liked their comercial products when I worked with them a few years back. But I really am broke at the moment so AVG is interesting. (I got Vista and Office 2007 for free, Thanks Bill!)

I am currently using zonealarm pro for firewall, antivirus and spyware. However they haven't come out with a version that works on vista yet. If there was a verson then I would be upgrading to vista.

I have used avg antivirus (free version) and it works well. A couple of things I didn't like about it was the the updates. No way of changing the time between updates. and by default it seems to wont to do a virus check every day when windows is loaded. But AVG works.

Vista itself can recommend software to install that can do the job, however you have to pay for it. I find it strange that they are providing apps to do a job but not telling a user that they have to pay for it. Just typical MS I guess.

However I will be upgrading to Vista when Crysis (a FS game) comes out. it requires DX10 to work and it's going to be heavy on video cards.

Awesome shot Chris!

BTW....this post is bought to you by the letter V.....V as in Vista, not Vasectomy.
So far I like it, but this new interface is going to take a little getting used to. Office 2007 is nice too. Outlook found by exchange server and configured itself to work without any input from me.....very smart.....almost too smart....

I did a clean install, and was suprisingly quick and easy. Have got AVG running while I decide what to do.
