is it the 10D or the lens that you have problems with?
((200 x 2) x 1.4) x1.6 = approx 900 mm (i think thats how it works) - auto focus stops working at 800mm on the 10 d (again i think thats right)

it doesn't matter which zoom, if you have a lens that's 17mm and it's wide open at F8 then you aren't going to get focus lock, which is the same if you have 800mm zoom and when it's wide open at F8 you aren't going to get zoom lock.

Been spending a lot of time looking at the moon and the reflection of the light (which is reflected anyway from the sun) on to the clouds trying to work out how to capture it.

If you expose for the moon the clouds will be black, if you expose for the clouds the moon will blow out and if you try to blend it is not going to look right due to the radial light on the over expose moon photo so any ideas

With that im off to sleep

indeed - but the associated events usually take place on a day or in a building/set location...such as classes, services, and fellowship activities...

it doesn't matter which zoom, if you have a lens that's 17mm and it's wide open at F8 then you aren't going to get focus lock, which is the same if you have 800mm zoom and when it's wide open at F8 you aren't going to get zoom lock.

I need to learn to be less fussy in PP of photos. Once upon a time, what I shot was as fussy as I got. No PP at all!. but these wedding shots, I've probably been spending a little too much time on them. (perhaps even far too much)
Bit worried they wont be any good, they seem to be expecting miracles, heh.
Between them, and following 22 or so hens for about 9 hours.. I'm severely sleep deprived.

Oh, Miss Ribena popped on by while we were all at a Cuban dance club. That was fun.. she's freakishly tall though.

I have had to cancel the 1D as I dont know how long it will take to sort mess out. So close yet so far away.

So how does the bank get the extra back of the presenter of the chq?

Following that go talk to Glam, he should have no issue getting it back to you.

oo, so 5 photos took 2 hours to edit? I'm guessing you tried to finish most of those 90 images left. Naughty naughty. And I'm guessing you're still sleeping, late for work. :p

Your photos were great without the post processing, so apart from black and white conversions, and adding vignetting to a lot of them, and even selective colouring, I don't know what else. :D

Tony: You should be able to get that reversed today. Get them to dishonour it, which will change your actual balance overnight, but they can give you a credit hold on the account, looks like a deposit, to make up the difference.

The processing of cheques are done by a sophisticated scanner, not by hand. Scans the amount on the bottom right, and random checks are made by the TOC - Transaction Operations Centre, operators..;)

The 85mm you have to becareful as the back element stick out a long way and can be easly knock. There are a few MK1 but slower focus.

did ya get your monitor? what do you think of it?

Fantastic! Why didn't I do it earlier? Oh that is right $$$.

Interesting my CRT was pretty stuffed, I didn't realise it until I got the new one, I now have shadow detail, in fact I never noticed the picture of the 1D Series in the top of the DPP window, on the CRT it just looks black!

InDesign is the program that really benefits from the screen, oh and FlightSim :D

On InDesign, will be ordering Adobe CS3 Suite shortly, Photoshop CS3, Indesign CS3 etc, nice. My upgrade rule is only every second version, so I jumped CS2 :)

Initially I wasn't sure I needed the features of advanced. Upon closer inspection they have dumbed down some of the tools in standard to create more of a difference, so it is not just some extra 3D and video features. HDR is one of the features to have this happen, not sure if it is the same, better or worse than CS2. I may end up with the premium suite anyway as it has Flash and Dreamweaver, it also has PS CS3 Advanced.

I can probably live with PS CS1, but we really need Indesign as we only have a 'demo' at the moment.

BTW I don't do extended 'demos' of software, if I use it I own it.

canon I tryed Duncans out for me it seemed a little soft with close up shots but it could have been the lens. My Sigma was way sharper and the only reason I sold was I wanted all my glass to have 77mm filter

At the time I wanted a landscape lens so went to the 24-105. Bit od lightfall off at 24mm but thats when you use the 17-40

CS Advanced has the following extra features:
- 3D visualization and texture editing advanced
- Motion graphics and video layers advanced
- Movie Paint
- Measurement and data
- DICOM support advanced
- MATLAB support

And the following feature are advanced rather than basic (what ever that means):
- Adjustable cloning and healing with overlay preview basic advanced
- Enhanced 32-bit HDR support
- Vanishing Point
- Animation
- Ruler and Count tools
- Image Stack processing

I own one :p Sharper than the IS verson according to reviews. Most of my glamour was done with it. Takes 1.4 TC well with very small IQ loss
With a 2xTC you get light fall off.
The F4 version is just as sharp but 67mm filter

the 70-200 is sharper than the 24-104. I would have to do side by side re the 50 and 70-200 but my money would be on the 50mm.

But you need to compare apples with apples they are 2 very different lens.
I used the 50mm for full length body shots in my lounge in old house. I also did some tests with light from a portable gas heater (sorry didnt have a wood burning fire place so had to improvise) handheld with high ISO which I could not have done with a 70-200 F2.8

Noticable. You are welcome to my 70-200 to test for yourself.
Primes will alsways be faster and sharper.
50mm F1.4 85mm F1.2L 135mmL 200mm F1.8L (if you can get 1)
The 85F1.2 is meant to be the "portrait lens"

What you need to remember under studio lights is different to outdoors as far as AV is concerned
as your not trying to blur the background so much most of mine are F8-F11 in studio.

I liked the 70-200 as I could keep distant but zoom in with out distortion. I had my spot in the studio and stayed there.
How many spots do you want to see on a models face, I know they dont want to see any. So you soften the skin anyway.

Yes, 85 mm gives the correct proportions for a person, hence the reason it is 'named' the portrait lense. I often shoot bewteen f11 and f16 (sometimes higher) in the studio. But would like something I can open right up when I'm shooting with natural light only. I like spots, wrinkles, hairs, scars, e.t.c, the sharper the better. I like realism. So don't care too much for that 'soft' look.

Thanks for your comments on the sharpeness of the lenses, though, I haven't really tried them, so nice talking to someone who has... :), your super. :)

O.K, well I am just guessing at the price. I do remember now, though, that it is not the original lens I bought. I didn't think the orignal 24-105 was sharp enough, so, I took it back to Canon, and they replaced it. Think that was in like July or something, so the lens isn't that old really.

The first thing I need to do is make up my mind what lens I want to replace it with. It'll be hard to part with it...

been to the race to the sky, a few years ago was down for the easter weekend for warbirds over wanaka. Had two days of the airshow and figured spend the sunday with the race to the sky.

just new to photography back then.

that's where this shot comes from

http://cuthbert.net.nz/2004/img_4571.jpg

there was a guy there shooting with the 100-400 following the winner, who happened to be from japan. I forget his name.

thanks :) yeah i only had the flash and a joe demb diffuser pro on top, and a reflector disc (but not in those shots)

i suggest you search google for pregnancy photographers and make a contact sheet of some of your favourite shots to take along with, you can show the clients and see what they like too

for the white background i ended up having to gradient-photoshop it out to a flat #eee grey cos the sheet was creased and distracting - also in some the guy was so tall his head was poking out the top of the backdrop LOL

for the black i just left it how it was, it really was much darker than i expected, i thought the sheet would reflect light and look messy but it was great

the winner was some guy from japan, who had some photographer following him around, using I think a 1Ds and a 100-400.

My brother even had a small chat with the winners mother, who also had come out from japan to watch. Very hard tho when her english wasn't very good. :)

is there an echo in here? LOL
cool shot - both times LOL

The general consensus I have read seems to be that the Sigma is sharper at the 70 end, but the Canon is better at the 200 end.

Having just made very good use of Petes 70-200, I realise Im going to need a 70-200 2.8 of some type in the future. I really have no idea which one to pick, all i know is I currently can't afford either.

Just writing the resignation letter for my IT job right now, i'm too busy with photography and working 70+ hours per week is running me into the ground.

Congrats!
I guess that means you have finnaly made it as a full time pro photog!
Not bad considering how long ago you started, but expected given the amout of effort you have put in

Hi All

somethingsimple - for the awwwwwwwe gooey factor I can't go past number 1 - it is very cool to include the family pet in the photos :)

Can't offer any technical help as I wouldn't have the first idea how to start myself!

It depends on the camper :)

I never took it further than a class 2, but Iv driven things bigger than I shouldn't have :)
the biggest units here you can rent (without getting a house bus) is the 6 berth units .. can drive them on a car ..

Royal Mail paid for most of my truck driving.. great student job that.. stayed for an extra year..

Thanks! I've actually been able to live on my photography for the past two summers, not easily last summer, but this summer no problem. I did live on it for a few month late last year. I have a mortgage though so IT is necessary, plus I enjoy it. Winter isn't a good time for wedding photographers, I can't live on it in winter, but i've made enough to take a couple of months off to finish a half dozen albums, rest, and recuperate. The 80 hour weeks are starting to take their toll on my health, in 2 months i'd be completely burned out so sorting it now before that happens.

So, who here has a 17-40 and has compared sharpness with a 24-105?

Um... they're both L lenses, you'll gain far more with good lighting, posing, and technique than pixel peeping. They're quite different lenses too.

A friend has a 24-105L on a 5D, he gets amazingly sharp photos.
