You guys didn't use the "photographer with big lens comming through, get out of the way!" trick?
No need - 120-300 with 1.4TC, 20D & Monopod attached quickly becomes a hazard to shipping... (stand aside or lose a limb!)

Got black and white sheets for that job. Did a quick test tonigh with my model. White balance is off need to select flash for best results

Tony - wow - you are certainly moving on with your photography.

Have you tried custom white balance? I bought a white/grey 'card' that screws up into a wee size that fits in a small pouch that can fit in my bag - made by Lastolite - it's really effective and my shots have really changed (for the better) since the Custom White Balance experiments. The card was less than $50 over here.

I have a card just forget to use it :o

Yes photography has become a real passion, consumes my time. Computers and hardware are my second love thus I dont throw in my job, but the job also offers me photography oppotunitys thus in part why I brought studio lights. I need to get work to pay some how for "hireage" My 1st passion is my wife.
She is the most special woman who im forever trying to capture as I see her.

Love is blind so the 5D dosnt have a love setting :)

When are you going to sell that 24-70? it is getting pretty old now! And as for the bigma, if you don't sell it soon it will be so old that it is worthless!

Sigma a poor mans canon :) I would get the 70-200 Sigma but I think that the Canon will be better for the FF. Had a test of one and its nice.

Make me an offer I cant refuse. Dam the 5D FF is fussy on its glass. The 24-70 is a easy swap, the bigma what can you replace it with? Dont like push and pull. I have thought of replacing the bigma with the 120-300 F2.8 and a TC.

Ok advice needed. Ok there are 2 subjects that I love to photograph. Waterfalls and woman. Waterfalls are covered, however I just had an idea for models. Beauty training acadamys. Have been in contact with 1 in Auckland and the idea is the old TFP (Time for prints). There work needs to be photographed (the model) I need experence with photographing woman before I move on to my real dream.

What are people thoughts comments and advice (besides getting wife to agree). There will be the basic things i.e all ways have others there, model realase form etc. I need to get a portfoilo and just my wife wont be enough. I would prefer older woman but hey got to start somewhere.

Oh my real dream see bodyshots.co.nz

Hey some people love photography cars and others weddings

Tony, as the saying goes... if you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can move mountains... or Great men dream, then put action behind the dream. It helps too that you are passionate about what you are doing, as well as willing to put the $$$ when it is needed.

I would suggest:

1) get Sandra's consent. Without this nothing gets off the ground;
2) get Sandra's input/involvement. In doing so, she also has ownership and shares in your dream;
3) get "models" who want to have their own portfolio of pictures made. Offer a discount -- you are both learning the trade. Start off by advertising in th elocal papers/Herald, as well as referrals from friends, family, colleagues;
4) get model release forms -- it will save you the headache in the future.
5) remember, baby steps... baby steps... take it one step at a time. If you focus on the numerous aspects of the venture it can and will be overwhelming.
6) try to get free advertising -- if there is such a thing... Goodwill on your part will spur this on.

Can't think of anything else at the moment. Probably a cuppa would be good to bounce ideas off...

Sandra said no young models older woman ok :)

Im going to ask my female work mates and sandra will ask hers. It would be an evening thing. I have much to learn, I have trouble getting people to pose as Im not sure what im trying to acheive ( that is seeing the final picture in your head).

The idea is to take a normal woman, mum, with job and taking her and getting her all dressed up and capturing her beauty to remind her that she is more than just a wife, mother and worker...she is also a sensual woman inside.

Sounds a little like those glamor shot people - Body Shots. They have an interesting rule though there - no males. Would be interesting to see how that stood up as far as human rights went if a guy applied for a job there

I have always thought it would be possible to do a better job, as they live off soft focus, if a decent focus was used and some touch up, I am sure the result would be better.

From a womans point they have got it nailed. All woman team. I would look at husband and wife team. I think I could produce the same sort of work once I get my lightning sorted out. Sandra hates to model for me but does it anyway.

Be nice to have someone who "loved" the camera.

Warren, the best jobs aren't advertised -- they go internal first then external (same with Westpac, other banks, and organisations I think) so getting the editorial photo job will be a cinch later on. The trick is getting in first. ;)

With your "batting average" I'm sure you will succeed. Small challenges prepare us for huge ones... I found that out during the last 10 months of looking for work. Bugger though when I'm either too over-qualified or don't have the experience in a particular field:confused: Oh well, something good will eventuate from this -- I know because photography was one of them!

Well on the subject of toys, my latest arrived today, a brand new Dell PowerEdge Server, hmmm dual core 2.8Ghz P4 (it replaces a dodgy Celeron 2.4), needs a bump in the memory department, the deal I got only came with 256MB, will attach it to my 1TB RAID array. I have my own wee datacenter now :D Nice piece of kit, quite quiet, so would make a good workstation with a decent video card (it has a 16x PCIexpress slot).

With regard to Dell -- I've had a few negative experiences with them -- 3 of them in the last 3 years... and found out the hard way that there is no such thing as real customer service for laptops. I gave up in the end and asked my previous controller to ban Dell from future purchases. They are now sticking with Compaq/HP. But to be fair also, their desktops are a joy to use.

A note on LCD monitors, make sure they do 16.7 million colours and not 16.2 million. The difference isn't great but the enough to matter. As a photograher it does pay to see all the colours needed. Keep an eye out for that.

As for the 16ms responce time. they are normaly gray to gray. Even on a monitor that has a fast responce time the ture number is alot higher. I used to play FPS on a 16ms monitor and didn't see a problem.

Tony,

Good decision -- we wouldn't want to worry about you being lost... or at worse, hurt. There are pictures that are worth the tramp... but there are pictures not worth getting hurt for -- rain and mud make a path dangerous especially when near a cliff or a steep incline. A broken camera can be fixed... a broken back maybe not ;-)

Any pics?

Sounds like my wife. "How come I get to do night shift work and you get to buy stuff for your camera....... and when are you going to finish the house"....yes dear so that was a yes to the 70-200 F2.8 :)

How many courses is this dinner?

:p
oh allright ill post already! hah.

I've just been pretty busy etc and havn't been bothered posting much at all!

Easter weekend was very interesting, I didnt make the 21 pano sales target! hah, far from it. I sold one, but not the big one, a smaller, $100 one.

Everybody was great. They were all amazed at the photos and wanted to look at them heaps. We spent ages going around every house, and lots of them invited us in for coffee etc etc. A few people tried it on (hung on their wall somewhere to look at).

We were stopped in the street because people had heard about us ('oh are you the guys with the photo!')

Gave away probably about 180 bussiness cards - so who knows, perhaps I'll get something from that one day.

We met a great NZ businessman / photographer Kevin Male. He's had about 10 photography books publish from his travels around NZ and the world. He was really interested and made a concerted effort to find somewhere in his place to hang it, but couldnt find anywhere. He gave me a list of people who may be interested, which was great. He was great and in the end gave me a signed copy of one of his unpublished books :D

So all in all it was a great weekend, I made enough money to cover my gas, and learnt alot - I declared the weekend a success, because of the people I met.

In other news, I was working over the weekend so missed the V8's! first time i've missed them in about 4 years. Looked like a fantstic weekend with some spectacular crashes.

Today, I spent at the snow :D You all know I love the snow more than my mother, so this means im now in a pretty good mood. For those of you who dont know, i shelled out $4,000 for a lifetime pass to Mt Ruapehu.
However, today I was at the countrys only indoor skifield, SnowPlanet. I had to shell out more money to get in there, tho at least I didnt have to pay for rental gear (i have my own). So, $60 worth of snowplanet entry, and $120 worth of new gloves (needed them anyway) I was away smiling :) Snow im just looking at plonking down another 6 or $700 on a second set of ski's for this winter :)

I'll never be able to afford those new lenses at this rate!

Bit of a question. Im looking at picking up a Sigma 50-500 in the next couple of days, question is will my canon 1.4x II converter work with this lenses?
If not could someone let me know as I guess it will have to be a 100-400L instead.

AF won't function on either of the lens.

The aperture is simply too small to function.

A 1.4tc adds one stop,
and 2x adds two stops.

For AF to function, it has to be F5.6 or less.

So a F4 lens at any length, wide open, such as 70-200 F4, will work with 1.4tc and still function with autofocus, but the 2x won't give AF, but still be visible through it, making it 140-400mm F8 (not ideal at all!)

I'm pretty sure the 100-400 and 50-500 Bigma are around F4 - F4.5 at the short end and both F5.6 at the long end, meaning both will be F8 with the 1.4tc connected.

My Sigma 120-300, is F2.8, giving 168-420mm F4 and 240-600mm F5.6, both retaining autofocus.

PS. Welcome again to the other members ;)

Steve finally bumps his head in, after seeing him share some great Melbourne Commonwealth game pics few weeks ago ;)

Indeed, extremely cheap for 120X cards. Rob Galbraith did some tests but with the 8GB cards and it was in the top bracket next to Sandisk Ultra II... But, very few reviews on the card itself. Maybe they are where Kingston were 5 years ago... Btw, they only give a 5 year warranty compared to lifetime of Kingston.

Funny how Kingston started off a few years ago and no one would touch them with a 10 foot pole... I think that Transcend is at that point where they are trying to get into the market with low prices so that people try them. One thing though that the marketing folks forgot was to get the feedback system up and running.

In this day and age, if you can't find write-ups or substantial feedback on-line then all the advertising money is wasted.

So far it hasn't shown up in mine -- I think that this is a seller option rather than a TradeMe one.

True to form, I got a response from TradeMe and they said that sellers had the option to ban buyers for whatever reason and it was beyond their control. I mentioned that this was the first time in my life to be black-listed and I had a right to know why... though I doubt that TradeMe will do anything about it.

Everyone I've spoken to, clients, friends, family, all say photographers are known for $3000 upwards, so there is nothing cheeky about charging even half that amount.

Tim, I agree with Warren! People who spend for their wedding should be willing to spend at least $1500 for decent momentos of their day -- I know I would after seeing yours and Wazza's pics. Now, $3000 can be reached when you have enough customers to turn down... I'm not sure though what the $3000 package includes but that is hefty enough to provide an album for the bride & groom to keep.

I told them in advance about my fee for unlicensed image use ($1K + GST) but they ran it without permission anyway. When I call should I ask for my unlicensed image fee, or for their standard pg1 fee in addition to the pg4 fee do you all think?

As long as everything is in writing, I would suggest you try... but not to a point where you lose the opportunity to get more business with them. I don't like burning bridges -- the world is too small for such actions... If push comes to shove, settle for 75% and then make it clear to them that a contract is a contract.

Bank just approved my Garage studio over the phone 6mtr x 9mtr. That should be big enought?

Design time, what things do I need.....

6x9m should be huge, that's great! I'd paint it black (reflections bad m'kay), make sure there are high ceilings, get a backdrop stand, put a place to hang lights up high. 4 lights should be plenty to start with... :)

Yeah i'll be nice to the dom post and point out their oversight. Not sure if I should push for the $1K fee or ask for the standard front page fee in addition to the pg4 fee. Thoughts?

Just talk to them, see what they say. Johns right about the bridge. You may have lost a few dollars today but what could you loose in the future.

Having said that dont let them screw you either.

Is it just a small header pic telling people to flick to Page 4? If so, it won't be worth as much as say a smaller front page.

If you give them some bad flack now, you'll never get business with them again.

Cut some losses, but also ask for a bit more. Maybe next time ;)
