That's why I went bigma. Everywhere I read said the 170-500 was rubbish. Still saving my beer tokens for 70-200 2.8.
And thats why I went Canon 300mmF2.8 IS. Bigma didnt cut it for me. I have the 70-200 F2.8 and it is a great lens.
Im waiting for the Canon 16-35 MK2 to come out and more reviews to posted. problem is it is a 82mm thread :(

My wife is on Ihug at work and their connection has been up and down like a yoyo this morning. More down than up. My home connection is on xtra, and I have had no problems accessing my mail server there, so assume that xtra is OK. (I can't believe I just said that!)

Quite refreshing to do without the net at the moment, maybe I'll have to resort to talking to 'real' people. There's a thought!

I like where you're heading with these, although they may look a tad too staged?
The building you've found is wicked though
Yes, extremely staged :). I use multiple locations, each has a similer feel, though.
Is anyone else having problems with their broadband
YES, working now though. Apparently Telecom were doing a planned upgrade. Upgrade = better, only a small inconvenience. :)

Tony, am I right in thinking you owned a 30D? If so, I am interested in your (and any one else's) opinion: I am thinking of buying the 30D body to go with the 20D so my wife Joanne and I don't need to keep sharing cameras. 5D is a different beastie and we are not considering that option. Keen to hear!
Edit: Does it take the same battery as 20D?

I had issues with international traffic and POTN. massive ping times.
I then gave up, tried to play an online game - until I realised that was even worse than websites - 3 quick disconnects, and GAME OVER.
Come on Telecom, you're poor.
Also Vodafone mobile - the number of times "network busy" or text messages coming late. Or driving around Auckland City, and keep getting dropped off. It's getting worse and worse. It's pathetic. Time to complain. Don't feel like paying my big bill

In good news...
The New Zealand dollar this morning broke a 25-year-old record high against the US dollar - fantastic news for holiday makers but bad news for exporters.
The dollar briefly traded at US74.76c, the highest level it has touched since it became a free floating currency in March 1985. It was floated at US44.44c.
The dollar was last at this level against the US dollar in 1982 when New Zealand ran a so-called crawling peg currency.
The previous post-float high of US74.65c was in March 2005.
At 12.10 it had eased slightly and was trading at US74.64c.

Funnily enough it wasn't difficult, it was happening so often you could just about sit there clicking randomly and you get at least one of them dive bombing every ten shots or so. Cool to watch though.
I'll hit that spot again with a grunty lense one day and get some shots worthy of the moment, but these shots were more about the fun of it for me. A bit of a novelty.
We are way too critical of our work at times, sometimes just pointing and shooting is more fun.......that's what these shots are about.

Sorry to leave you hanging, but it's a personal goal that I am keeping to myself.
Suffice to say I intend to be photographing full time within a few years.
I think many of us on this forum would be capable of going fulltime (judging by what I've seen - and this includes those who don't think that their work is up to it either ;) - a wink for someone who will know what I am talking about)
I am already on the way towards a fulltime deal.

I'm not out to compete with anyone for anything. I have no desire to be 'better' than anyone else as far as photography goes. I saw some point and shoot shots the other day that put anything I have ever shot to shame. Like they say, cameras don't take shots, people do. Capturing those 'moments' is always the hardest thing to do.
I just want to live a particular life - with a particular lifestyle. That's what I'm aiming for.
I'll get there or die trying.

Competition is healthy helps you excel
I have no problem been competitive in fact I have never kept it hidden that I want to wip wazzas butt with landscapes.
He has taught me more than any one else and his work has inspired me to push myself harder and further to get the "WOW" shot
As Tim said it is his composition and thats what I will work on.
But I have no intention to be wazza nor copy his work because I have my own style....what it is blowed if I know it just "Weka Style"
You want to excel hang out with people who will help you. The old saying

Oh if anyone want to take offence at that to bad. It wasnt intended to be directed at anyone

If you want to get to the top of your game, it makes sense to surround yourself with those who are at the top of theirs.
I joined this forum to learn. I will never stop learning. If guys the likes of Wazza, Weka etc are keen to help, then I'll soak it up like a sponge unashamedly.
What I think gets thrown out of perspective here occassionally is that photography, like any art form, is very subjective. Some will critique shots simply because the shots don't fit their 'I like it like this' formula.
Often the photos are fine and could probably sell in most places selling landscape posters etc. Landscape composition is a perfect example "Oh the rock should have been a fraction to the left" etc etc. Frankly, that's only someone's opinion. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Like anyone else, I have taken thousands of shots that suck. Each one teaching me something along the way.
Your work is your work - what other people think of you is none of your business. If your work doesn't sell, you'll either give up or become a better photographer. Choice is yours.

I figured that out a while ago, I use to post pictures with the idea of getting the ok from others that what I had taken was good. Then one day I just figured that I know what I wont my photos to be. no one else. Now when I post I just post because I wont to share. If people don't like it then back luck on them.

That's exactly why I photograph things. It's not for others, it's for me.
If your 'formula' doesn't work from a sales perspective, then you have to adjust.
I have a bunch of shots hanging on the wall here that I'd consider totally unremarkable, but the recipients were thrilled to bits with them when they got them.

Dunno if it is related to the broadband issues, but Telecom replaced a major router on their network at 11:30 due to a hardware fault. Took down our connection to the auckland regional libraries for 10 minutes so nobody could get any books out in greater auckland (except for auckland city) because we host their library system.

telstra went poof. this then effected telecom and every other ISP - the router change over was planned and was just coincidental to the outage..
Telstra finally got it fixed at 2pm.. It basically killed most international traffic and internally was so clogged thats why we ground to a halt..
How can we (thats NZers) compete on a international market with this sh1te service.

Welcome Di, I hope you have a sufficently large wallet, it can be quite dangerous perusing these pages.............
Tony, the car we got for our daughter is an absolute miser, I filled it up on the day we picked it up, its done about 250km since and just put $17.00 in it to top it back up.
1300 cc 1994 toyota carolla very tidy & straight $2500
Its a bit hard to get used to driving a car, driven vans, people movers for the last 11 years, seats are soo low to the ground!!!

As I mentioned to David in an earlier post -- it will get to .75 For those of you planning to buy something at B&H or overseas now is the time to buy... or wait till its gets to .75 which effectively will give you around .735 with all the bank charges.
Here's a few shots I took in March at Mission Bay (Auckland Waterfront).
Neither of them are great from a photographic outlook, but I thought they were fun. One day I'll go back and make a good job of it....they are what they are.

The 50mm 1.8 was good fun for me but I felt that it wasn't what I wanted long term hence I sold it to Moppie. IT is capable of giveing you very good pics as long as you understand its limitations. It is also the best bang for buck lens I've come across.

Thanks John, I was just wondering wether (weather??) it is much of a difference compared to my 2.8 of if I should spend a bit (reasonable bit) more & get the 1.4. I dont envisage doing a lot at these low light levels without a flash, just not supposed to be using a flash in this church. For $160 odd dollars, if it can give me a reasonable shutter speed, it is probably worth spending $160 even if it doesn't get a lot of use.
Cheers

Regarding UV filters
I have one permanently on my 120-300
The front lens element is probably worth $1000. ;)
I had one of my 17-40, however dropped the lens when it was near new, smashed it, and never replaced it since.
Also had a filter on 50mm 1.8, but caused too many reflections.
If you can look after your gear, or use other filters, like CPL, or ND filters, don't see the full need of making the images even less quality.

re filters on your lens.. i got whooped by a piece of rubber that hit the 70 - 200 right on the front corner. (it was flicked up by a V8) lucky i had a cheap UV filter on the lens that took the whack. the filter broke into 3 pieces but no damaged to the lens. i can tell you i had this real bad sinking feeling but the smile soon returned when unscrewed the damaged filter and the lens was all good. A photog standing 5 feet from me had this shocked look on his face after the impact. He then rummaged through his bag and fitted his UV filter to his lens. :)
So for $25 saved myself a possible big bill to get the lens fixed.

Don't worry, fuel is much cheaper in NZ than in Europe. It isn't quite as cheap as USA but doesn't completely empty your bank account each time you need to fill the tank.
Here in Germany I use Diesel. 1 Litre = €1.09 at the moment. = NZD 2.00

I have one and find it extremely useful for situations like the one you mentioned, just watch your DOF at f/1.8, especially if you are close to the subject, a flash is probably out of the question due to the subject and the fact there is probably no where to bounce it in an environment like that.

So who here knew that an Emirates 777 had a near miss at NZAA last week?

Yeah, had do go full throttle on take off to miss a digger or something. Pilot didn't know they were working on the runway. Something like that.

They're not 'racing' in Valencia, no wind. Oh wait wrong Emirates.
Do planes not use full throttle on take-off anyway or do pilots see how little speed they need for get off the ground just for laughs?

anyone got a good place in auckland taht rents out lenses? i need to hire a proper macro lense for a day or two.
:D
you can try progear in parnell - i heard a rumour that now glam is running it he was going to have a rentals devision
otherwise there is total rentals (you'll have to look it up)
re filters on your lens.. i got whooped by a piece of rubber that hit the 70 - 200 right on the front corner. :)
So for $25 saved myself a possible big bill to get the lens fixed.
lol @ that other photographer
And you lot are frightening me regarding cars and fuel... I refuse to drive a cheap tin box, I love having something powerful and fun to drive, but you make it sound like petrol is worth the same as gold! What's unleaded (95RON here) and SuperUL (97-99 RON here) cost down there per litre?
unleaded ('91) ranges (lately) anywhere from $1.38 - $1.65 a litre (has gone higher within the past year) and add 5c more for 'super' ('96 i think LOL - im lucky that my big gas guzzler takes '91) grades
diesel is around a buck a litre
i remember just before the gulf war when petrol was 70c a litre... *sigh*

It is carefully calculated based on weight of loaded aircraft and lenght of available runway, I am often out at the airport where they work it out, they also work out how much fuel you need etc, they can't just fill the tanks up as it is a bad idea to land a plane with a heavy load of fuel, and it costs fuel to carry fuel.
No point wearing everything out and burning excess fuel just to take off quicker, there is also the passenger comfort factor to take into account.
There is a story around about a 767 that got forced to land in Whangarei many years back, they got it on the deck OK but then had the issue of getting it back up, you need more runway for take off than landing (I have seen a guy 'drop' a Cessna onto the runway at Ardmore and stop it within 20m ). In the case of the 767 they had to pull the seating out, put just enough fuel in to get to Auckland, stick on the grass at then end of the runway, fly in a test pilot to do the job, rev it up and 'drop the clutch' to take off on the short runway!

So there's a little more to it than just sticking it into first gear and revving the guts out of it. Imagine doing all that palavour to get to work everyday.

Actually that is not far from the truth down this part of the world, most of the work the pilots do now is navigation, avoide this airspace, or that weather system etc...
They are giving some of the pilots something interesting to do on NZAA approaches now they are trying to glide the heavies in to save on fuel.
