Only if you have a money tree...

I dont have a fairy but the money tree is still producing fruit

I turned down $3400 for my 5D. I guess I want a BIG GUN before a 1D
I think a 500f4 or 600F4 would make a fitting 40th birthday present.

At this stage the 500F4 due to weight.
I have researched the 400f2.8 and 600F4 (both weigh the same)

Difficult question, the issue of choosing a second body. We are considering the 30D so my wife too can indulge her interest in the art. Then we wonder if we should wait for the 40D whatever that may feature. Or should we consider the 5D. Then we get busy and put the matter to one side while we deal with business.

You would only have 1/2 lens that would be ok on a 5D.

People STAY AWAY from Full Frame. Trust me you will spend so much money on "L" glass every one will think you have a money tree

the having 2 bodies I'd agree with, not sure about the rest.
yeah the camo tape looks pretty camp - probably hiding a whole heap of abuse underneath. If all else fails, you could always paint it. I'm picking it'll go beserk in about 30 mins and get to 1600 or so...

If you're gonna get a second body - may as well make it worth it :D :P I guess the question is : why not? :D

exactly. its not like im getting it right now anyhow: the 17-55 f2.8 IS and 70-200 f2.8 IS L lenses would come first then the 30D body, then the 15mm f2.8 and 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 - all when i finally get a money tree, so its all moot really but it is motivating to have a goal to reach for. and after all, i couldnt have predicted that i would have as much as i do right now a little while back, so nothings impossible right?

i wouldnt buy a 20D now cos they are already unavailable from most retailers and with the soon release of 40D will be even more outmoded; won't get a 40D cos of cost and i wouldn't bother with a 400D as i already have a 350D and prefer the body design of my own - also don't want to just duplicate what i already have but get something better - and not interested in ff at this stage = lol so that doesnt leave much!

By time you get a new body the 40D will be where the 20 is now.

Make a commitment. Any way you have the bigma that will make you look like a pro, just dont put the hood in the cake

Also true. I have to admit after my 300D, I was pained to see how short my newly purchased (same time as the 5D) 70-200 was. It ends up making for a big heavy portrait lens... :p

Yep "L" glass remeber corner to corner sharpness. I wish I new this before I brought it but I dont back down from anything once I make a commitment

will try and get time to shoot it tomorrow. when u say stitched in manual mode, do mean hand-stitched in PS? cos that how i do all my panos - i dont use the plug-in

i had an idea for the letterbox challenge but wasnt thinking and put out all my paper rubbish for recycling :-|

one thing that i notice in studying the backs of the 'higher' canons is that none of them have a separate screen for image settings including 400D. i find that extra screen really useful as it is 'always on' i dont have to crank up the main display to see whats going on with shots remaining, exp, aperture and shutter speed

how does everyone else find using their single-screen cameras?

i downloaded pics of all the camera backs for 400d, 20d & 30d (and used a 400d on the weekend) and they all just seem to have one black all-purpose screen whereas the 350d has the black screen and a smaller numerical one above

am i completely misinformed?

ok, there's this web site called www.dpreview.com. it's got a in-depth review of most cameras ever made. all the cameras that I have lasted above all follow the same design.

go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos20d/page4.asp

not a problem. Before buying the 10D I was almost at dpreview.com every day trying to learn something new. Trying to figure out if I really needed it. Now a few years later I don't regret it one bit.

I even used that site to understand a few functions of the camera I couldn't understand via the manual.

apart from the forum (which I never really understood why it's in such a small window) it's the best place in the world for reviews.

Just back from a Cambodian wedding - I was shooting from 7.30am until 23.15 with a one hour break. Almost 7 hours over my package, but i'm paid by the hour after that :) 1200 or so photos, a bunch of them using my alien bees doing formals.

On a down note, I had two annoyances today:
- I thought i'd lost my wallet at the wedding, so I canceled my credit and eftpos cards, then I found it a couple of hours later. I have to wait for a new credit card, eftpos cards I have to go to the bank to get.
- I had a bag stolen from the back of my girlfriends car, which I borrowed for the weekend. One broken window, one bag gone containing 20D (faulty parallel imported one) and probably a few miscellaneous things. Professional insurance excess for stuff in a car is $2500 so that won't help. Hopefully my contents insurance or her car insurance will cover it. Thoughts welcome.
- Also one of my cameras has the wrong time on it - I syncronised it manually it's a month out - doh! I'm going to have to figure out how to change the time on a whole bunch of RAW files. I think I can just change the xmp files, but what a hassle.

Time for bed, i've been up for about 19 hours.

Breeze Browser has a facility to batch-change the Exif Created Date and Created Time by an offset. Then the File Rename can be run to change the file date on the computer to match the Exif date.

A 20-day demo is available.

Event people often use this to synchronise cameras. before or after an event, each photog takes a shot of one specific click (often the computer screen). The Exif DateTime fields can then be compared with the image to obtain an offset.

Commiserations, Tim on a rough day!

Car insurance is defined as anything bolted down to the car or that cannot 'survive" unless part of the car - eg radar detector is useless if not in a car type thing.

Contents insurance for your home should cover your "contents" anywhere they go - whether it be a car or even someone else's house - provided you that much of a comprehensive policy :) Some people's contents insurance is invalid as soon as they leave the driveway :)

It was actually only visible in Auckland for probably 3 or 4 days out of the whole month it was around due to cloud cover... We got lucky and i think saw it about a week after it had been around and after that no one was able to see it because of the cloud. :) It should have been visible just above where the sun sets to the left of Venus :)

*must stop the urge*

Really feel like buying something this week.

If I do go to the South Island, may buy a 5D.

Tony, I don't know why you wouldn't accept $3400? Isn't that what you were initially going for? They're selling for $3200-3400 now

Because young grasshopper I would have to replace it with something else.
Umm lets see 1Dmk2N cant get, 1Dmk3 not out yet, 1Dsmk2 umm $9000.

So lets do the math

5D=$3400 1Dsmk2=$9000 balance to pay $5600

With age comes wisdom. I will have my 1D all in good time and it wont be brand new. My money is on a 1Dmk2N for $3k.

I have to pay for the 300mmF2.8 yet as well :)
There is way to much to be lost on new bodies. I would rather spend $9000 on a lens.

I have to pay for the 300F2.8 as well. That will be done by my birthday. Then I will have a look at what Auckland Camera has on the shelf.

Yeah ok, fair enough. I don't know if I can wait around long enough for a 1D III. I think a 5D would fit me well. I don't care for brand new. As the usage I'll give it, will make it worn very soon. :p

If I was you I would wait. there will be heaps of 1Dmk2N out. Which for you would be much better than a 5D.
Remeber weather sealing, 45point autofocus etc etc.
FF is for things that dont move.

But the next 8 months, would be travel photography. A 1D won't give me better quality, just better autofocus and weathersealing. The output of my 20D, I can beat other users with 1D. Comes down to how well you know your own gear. I'd see greater improvements with a 5D for wedding photography and landscapes. The 1D III however would be different, more ideal, but the price is higher than expected, and being pushed back.

Go for a 1Dmk2N I am but I dont want to get rid of my 5D. I dont need the "S"
The 5D is enough.
What about your "sports" drifting etc

You have survied on 8.2 mp so far whats 12mp going to give you. 1.3 crop is a middle of the rd option

I'm not a sports photographer. Drifting isn't paid. It's just fun. I've probably made back the same amount that has gone in, to cover petrol etc. Probably made most money off Round 2.. (june 06, my first round last year). Several drivers bought some cheap CDs, and sold a couple of big images for use on posters. (Tein suspension - Shock Shop) If anyone sees a couple of drift cars on their posters, they're mine. (for a second there, I couldn't remember if I was paid, but checked the business account, money was in there)

Only existing AB customer can get them as they no longer ship to NZ

That might've changed back 6 months ago, people might be able to order them. They work good.

Since I'm a lazy bugger, could someone please do a quick table summarising the key differences (frame size, burst rate, AF I guess) between 1D 1Ds, mkII etc? If you feel like including the 5D, 20D, 400D, then that'd be great also...

I imagine such a concise summary already exists somewhere, so even just linking to it would be great...

Landscapes? Not much. But I haven't taken many fine images. Get into something better, watch some seasonal change over mountains. Print on canvases. Get a stock image gallery like David Wall.

I've made 20x more money in weddings. So really everything should be based upon this. If the camera will shoot good weddings and landscapes, then I'm fine.

20D is ok for weddings. Not the best for landscapes. More pixels for 30" prints would be nice. Your 5D takes images clearly more detailed.

You know I have never printed from the 5D. I have 1 print from the 20D and 1 from the 30D. I have a pano from the night we went out to see the birds that I will get done at frog prints. I will aslo see if I can get a A2 and A1 done as well of a couple of shots I like

The 5D has always felt right in my hands. The 20D and 30D I never really warmed to dont know why. Both only lasted 6months before I sold them.

Well, I was right. I took heaps of shots in the weekend - all really bland and boring. So nothing to post.

I had headed out to Thames/Corromandel to get some costal (water crashing onto rocks) shots, but firstly, the wind was not Northerly - so no waves of any description. Secondly, the whole region clouded over in a drab gray colour that flattened everything. Can you say "boring"?

Still, you get that from time to time.

I did meet a couple of cool people who said I could shoot off the top of a cliff they owned (at the top of their property) and I also bumped into the owners of a beautiful 1967 Mustang (Recently restored - I got a few snaps of that too) who were really cool.

It only takes a few seconds to see why people want out of Auckland. People still actually talk to other people down there.......weird. AND everyone's actually nice to each other. Now there's a new concept.

Cliff
P.S. May post a few of the Mustang shots later when I get them off my laptop. They're not great, but the car sure is.

Hey Folks. Hope you all had grand weekends.

I got back from the Indian wedding at 930ish pm last night. I'd left home at 7:30am, so it was a bloomin long day, and I decided I needed today off to recoup ;)

The wedding was amazing. A huge Hindu affair.
We arrived in Hamilton at 10am and instantly got all wrapped up by a professional Sari wrapper upper (that's the technical term). The official photographer and his helper arrived while I was in 'wrap' mode, so I couldn't hide from them. The photog had pro gear coming out his ears. All Nikon stuff. I think I offended him when I said the Nikon lense he was using looked like a sigma. Well, it did, and his sidekick agreed with me

Although the photog said he didn't mind me shooting, I didn't get a chance to get many photos. With him, his sidekick with his camera (who often held one of those massive light reflectors for official dude) and the videographer with a massive Sony TV camera jobbie, there was no space for me.

I didn't get the Sari off till I got home last night. Which mean driving from Hamilton, getting petrol (hah), and dropping my sister off, in full 'attire'.

I did do the vein thing and try to snap a few shots of me from my camera when I got home. I should have just asked the flatmate, because I was too tired to do set anything up properly.
I'll looksie and see if any of those are slightly decent. Remember, they are just snaps to show the sari. They are not any photographical pieces of genius :p

oh preddy sari - looks really great on, was it comfortable? great that u dont have to uproot yourself

im really pissed off :-| i copied my backed up photos to my new ext HDD (a USB2 250GB seagate barracuda fyi) and it took MUCH longer than it should have (several hours) so i decided it must be faulty and i was going to return it and copied them all off again... but when i restarted the pc it bluescreened and went thru a bajillion file system errors and orphaned files etc...

when i look at the photos - most of them are trashed, corrupted etc and wont display or have horrid pink sections on them

so i go to copy my cd-backed-up-copies over the top - and i discover while doing so that i never MADE a backup for end nov/dec last year which is so bizarre cos i always back up my stuff, but there you go, its not there, so i mustn't have

really mad, lost about 2mth of family pics and now have to faff around in PS trying to rescue the files which i doubt is possible

i never would have moved them if i knew there werent off-system backups for those 2mth

and SO ironically, this whole mess occurred because i bought the HDD for extra storage and backup! if id left everything on my overfull existing drive, i'd still be fine

First copy of files will take hours, the first one with my external was about 9 hours via firewire connection. Subsecquent back-ups 5-15 minutes depending upon number of files altered, added etc.

I think someone has mentioned this recently, but don't leave your external drive turned on, they are generally not designed to be left spinning with insufficient cooling. My first one started to develop read/write errors after about 6 months (always on). Got replaced under warrenty but now only switched on for my daily or twice daily back-up.

Listen to Chris, your hard drive will probably be recoverable.

Best of luck

this isnt a HD issue in the sense that the drive itself has failed

it was not copying the files correctly; 2 hours went by with no noticable difference in progress. yet when i copied the files from my old external hdd to my internal hdd, it took less than 5min.

def. not the performance i expect from a plug and play 480mb/sec usb2 seagate drive

all would be well except that i was under the impression that i had backed up all 2006 pics when in fact i had not done 1/2 nov and all december. my sons primary school grad is on there as well as our new baby kittens and various other family pics and portraits

most displeased.

25GB? Are they ten years old? I have 4 of them, 200-500GB, never had a problem, and their reliability figures are good. Main problem with hard drives is overheating, I have 3 in my PC and I had to install a fan to keep them cool.

Who the bloody hell do I have to pay to get it working for me (weka checks his who owes him a favor list) . The interesting thing is that the "print preview" is accurate to what comes out in the final print

Forsaken how do you get on as we have the same printer

trust me im NOT using the new hdd at all.

my old drives and system are all fine. i have been using a 60gb usb-powered hdd as well as my internal one with no worries at all for 2 years now, always on, 24-7, and never had any issue with it, its a great little drive. hence i never expected the crap performance or file corruption that i got with this newer bigger AC-powered drive. i had a go at system restore but it couldnt see that the jpegs had been corrupted cos it said no changes existed between the restore point and now, so it refused to restore the system.

That is a fantastic baby photo. Love the yellow BG. It matches the duck well.

I love that shot, Duncan. He looked like he's using all concentration to stare wide eyed and bushy tailed for you :)

I say no to photos
And we are all getting dressed down there, by ladies (in waiting, hehe). All the Aunties etc wrap the Saris on us. I'm actually quite excited

Then a shirt drawn on a Tee is not a bad plan, if it's really a 'pig' out, hehe. Enjoy the nosh, sounds like an Italian dining experience. Or a Soprano one of sorts ;)

Aside from the fact that he'll never see me at 6am on any day, I never look grumpy in the morning. Bedraggled with a mane of incredible wild hair, very sleepy eyes, and crease lines in my cheeks from the pillows.. but never grumpy

Ok. Spare us then. I'm also never grumpy mornings, just look a mess.

Well. I've been sowing, potting, and gardening this afternoon. I may go take some semi-macro cacti pics if this rain goes away long enough for the deck to dry out

Me too.
Saturday morning I had to drive into town as my youngest managed to snap his bicycle in two. I found it had a 10 year guarantee on the frame, so we drove in & showed the injuries he got when the bike broke. Came home with a nive shiny new mountain bike. Paid a bit for it as it was more expensive than the old 3 year old falling to pieces broken one :D

my my now thats a big boy - try hiding that under a blue dressing gown..

Those are pretty dam good. The moon is looking pretty sharp.

This one, although not Emirates, is my best shot taken with the Photax 400mm f6.3 *full manual*

In decent light the lens was ok, focusing was very hard
I've since given the lens back to my grandad, who now plays around with it on his Sony Alpha. It was a good lens, before i had my 120-300 in 2005

Wow! What is that for a lens! Amazing what results it can get!

whats everyone's thoughts on this interpretation...

I like it. It is a good idea how it fades from B&W to colour!

For your entertainment :

BUCKET BENGAL

while in the bucket and then the after shot Water doesn't phase him in the slightest. He was in there in the first place as he saw Aaron washing some stones in the bucket and wanted to help

We used to have a cat that loved water. As soon as there where puddles outside she would play in them. I even saw here walk into Lake Taupo till she was 1/2 wet for a drink so she didn't have to loweh her head.

not a problem.

I think I learnt more from the DPReview articla about my last 3 cameras, than from the camera manuals (Which I did read).

I get to keep my house

One thing I have noticed with Indiany is they think Big is Beautiful when it comes to Electronic gizmos, so they buy the biggest cameras and video cameras there are, so people will see them.

25GB? Are they ten years old? I have 4 of them, 200-500GB, never had a problem, and their reliability figures are good. Main problem with hard drives is overheating, I have 3 in my PC and I had to install a fan to keep them cool.

Typo, cheers. 250GB. Brand new they both failed within 6 months.

My brother is visiting at the moment, last night we had a BarBQ with a few friends, & I took a few pictures. My brother wanted to look at what I took, then put the camera with 580EX attached on the edve of the table, & it fell down onto a concrete floor. It focuses completely wrong now!!!!
I'll have to get it repaired. Trouble is I have 3 photo shoots organized over the next 2 weeks. One for a shop & they are expecting the images this week!
I can manual focus.
Wondering if I should do the shoot using Manual, then send it in.

firstly if you feel comfortable with manual focus - then go for it - if not any chance of borrowing a unit from someone else or a camera shop.

secondly - yes charge him for it - if it was me who had broken my brothers gear i would have offered anyway..

thirdly - thats bad luck dude. what a bummer

Tony, was this the first lot of printing since you had the monitor calibrated??. Have you done anything different, checked colourspaces etc.

When I attempted to use different ink/paper, my results were terrible, even with the "correct" profiles for the printer. Went back to Canon paper & ink, with my "Eye Calibrated" screens, they both match printed output. If you've done nothing different, try reloading the printer drivers

oh preddy sari - looks really great on, was it comfortable? great that u dont have to uproot yourself
Thank you, SS :) Bar the fact that the petticoat was pulled so tightly that I couldn't breath, it was confortable. It was pretty funny walking around the Hamilton Rose Gardens. There were 400 guests, most were Indian, s the ladies suited being traditionally dressed. There were only 3 whities (girlies) that did the sari thing. And 2 whities (boys) that wore the traditional mens long shirt thing, with odd white draw string pants. We kinda stuck out like sore thumbs.
Oh, and once I ate, then had to drive home to Auckland, I felt like I was getting cut off in the middle.

Yeah, awesome news on the null uprooting. Ozzy willhave her void filled with Gizzy... another fluff ball.. so all is not lost there.

never use CUT and PASTE or Drag and Drop or Move to

always COPY and PASTE - check your data TWICE - then delete originals

and if anything goes wrong - don't try and fix it. STOP and breathe then contact a pro..

System restore - leave it alone unless you are certain that you have backups and can afford to reload the system.

oh preddy sari - looks really great on, was it comfortable? great that u dont have to uproot yourself

im really pissed off :-| i copied my backed up photos to my new ext HDD (a USB2 250GB seagate barracuda fyi) and it took MUCH longer than it should have (several hours) so i decided it must be faulty and i was going to return it and copied them all off again... but when i restarted the pc it bluescreened and went thru a bajillion file system errors and orphaned files etc...

when i look at the photos - most of them are trashed, corrupted etc and wont display or have horrid pink sections on them

so i go to copy my cd-backed-up-copies over the top - and i discover while doing so that i never MADE a backup for end nov/dec last year which is so bizarre cos i always back up my stuff, but there you go, its not there, so i mustn't have

really mad, lost about 2mth of family pics and now have to faff around in PS trying to rescue the files which i doubt is possible

i never would have moved them if i knew there werent off-system backups for those 2mth

and SO ironically, this whole mess occurred because i bought the HDD for extra storage and backup! if id left everything on my overfull existing drive, i'd still be fine

SS, have you tried Digital Image Recovery? Sorry to hear about the mishap....

a little app that I have got installed is called total copy. it adds two options to your right click and drag option. The app gives you control over speed and you can even pause a copy/move.

Everything is set to adobe RGB.

Why aRGB, you monitor may not be capable of displaying the full gambit of colour??

Generally, unless you monitor has a calibration system attached to it that also takes into account the currant ambiant light conditions, printed material will generally always be darker than your monitor.

The following is a guide that, although not applicable to me, using Paint Shop Pro as against Photoshop, was quite informative in setting the colourspace requirements.

Colour management can be as confusing as you want it to be, the more you get into it, the less you realise that what little you know:cry: I decided to leave my system with its "eye calibrated" monitors and standard profiles on the printer
