Cyberlink Power Director is pretty good, i use that. it has blend transitions etc
even the lite 'EXPRESS' version has them (it came with my hdd camcorder but u can also get it off the web)
i made a timelapse of some clouds over rangitoto to go in a music video we had to create for a class module once, was pretty fun really seeing the result but it was a TON of photos, all manually shot for a few secs of video

you need 30 fps for movie-quality animation btw

You don't need 30fps. Films only play at 24 or 25 fps. Most web animation is done in Flash and runs at 12 or 15fps. Some compacts run their capture rate at 30fps but god only knows why.

Momentz, alternatives which are SHYTE HOT are either Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere in either its Elements or Full version state, or if you're on a Mac, you should have iMovie then Final Cut Pro is the dog's conkers after that. Anything above that is for when you're working in the industry. Pinnacle's probably the easiest to source and run/operate without it clipping your creative wings so to speak.

But you say the software's flakey? :( And you can't figure out how to use the CF slot as opposed to dumping the shots onto the PC? Bum. I was planning on running mine not too long from now for like 15hrs straight.

Any of you lot know anything about monitor calibration?

I have two PC's side by side, one with an oldish Princeton 17" the other a new Suyama 19" TFT. Despite having run the Adobe Gamma thing on both they're obviously both way out. Now best I understand it is that if I buy like a calibration tool, I'm setting it so the screens will show what the calibrator says is correct according to a print. Now I also have tow printers, the main one being a Canon iP4200, but I rarely use it. I don't print my own work really. So what I really want is for both screens to show the same tones, and know those tones are pretty close to what will come out of a mini-lab say (ours at work have a setup with a coloured test strip thing done every day) or a printers who'll produce a poster say.

Suggestions?

Tax dept sent me a 5K bill for provisional tax for 2002... $1900 assessed + late fees and interest for 5 years ('cause they apparently didn't know where I lived... (yeah right)

I didn't own a business in 2002, infact, I haven't owned a business since 2000...

I've spent my life on hold today, to the lovely IRD.

<rant>It was the letter from the IRD today (A copy of what they sent to work) saying that they were going to fleece my wages by '20% until total paid' that got me a little riled. It stated they had no payment (too bloody right) and no contact (BS - I called them a month ago), so that legally gave them opportune moment to take action. My salary comes through tonight. Gah!

Anyhoo - I got a very lovely lad on the phone today, whom I explained my whole situation again. And also that I had made contact and that all the documentation from their end was still to get to me via mail. (I had only received some).

First call, a month ago, they told me I had to write a letter, and fill in IR3's for 2002 - 2007. Surely the information on their PCs would make it pretty clear that I've been a salary or wage earner since 2001, with no business income whatsoever!!

Anyway - after much discussion, many times on hold, and pretty much doing my tax returns over the phone covering the past 5 years, I have been informed I am going to get a statement with a nil balance. Yep, a big fat 0. But I had to also inform work to expect a fax from said tax dept saying 'please forget the first letter telling take payments from Kirstines' salary'

Ironically, work hasn't received the initial letter yet

Mega Phew from me.
Why they couldn't sort this on the first phone call, I don't know. Maybe I didn't sound agitated enough

i do the 'back' of the sunset and catch the light on the islands and cliffs on the east coast by going to the beach (any beach will do)
NS beaches arent a good area generally speaking for the actual sun (because the coastline behind you tends to cut the view of the sun off before the sky turns red) unless you get up high like on mt vic or somewhere like that
actually there would be some nice spots up back of albany/long bay to catch a view of the sky over the ranges as sun sets... today however it is dull and grey so dont hold your breath. sometimes the sun creeps in under the cloud layer at sunset which always looks pretty but dont think that will happen today

If you have a reflector, place that on the side between you and the group & try bouncing off that or a white wall. You might get problems with light fall off though with more than 3 or 4 people.
Otherwise your best bet will be to bounce directly off the celing above you.
Use 90 degrees, not angled. You want the pool of ligth above your head , not theirs otherwise you get shadows in the eye sockets. Use the catchlight card too.
If the flash is not bright enough then increase your ISO rather than reducing your aperture. DOF is important for a group. Try not to open your aperture past f8.

Setings.
Manual.
1/125 sec
F8
Flash Ettl + 1/3

Good luck

Tony, I love the photo, love how the coastline and sand dunes lead my eye into it. Shame it is a little hazey, but the composition is great IMHO. I don't like your title, for me it conflicts emotionaly with the "wow, what an awesome, ruggard, natural landscape" I feel when I look at it.

Something I'm still very much coming to grips with - communicating, rather than just capturing moments. It'd a hard task - really requires an understanding of the emotions elicited by lines, curves, colours, their placement and interactions....

Oh, are those vehicle tracks? Didn't notice, might be more effective in a large print. For me I felt a tension between what I expected a beach scene to look like (warm, fun etc) that was brought on by the waves and the first section of the foreshore, and the dark contrasty decimated looking dunes as your eye moves to the right. That's the level that it works on for me.

look at it this way: if you keep your goals clear, things that come up will either obviously support them, or obviously hinder them. this will make your choices easier.

Been thinking and reading a lot about photography. I think I oftem miss the whole point about photography. It is about communication. Rather than words the photo should speak for its self.

ok - when i saw the pic i thought wow i love this: it looked barren and almost like a wasteland but also beautiful with the softness of the dunes on the left and the sense of distance and space. then i saw the caption and wondered what exactly it meant. i totally didnt see the car tracks as being significant.

but i think another thing about a photo is that it may not say exactly what the photographer thinks it will say, to everyone: whats important is that it speaks SOMEHOW to the viewer and makes them feel different for having seen it.

Exactly.

For what it's worth, 4wd trekkers are often supreme conservationists - they don't want the place destroyed any more than anyone else. Usually the reason for 4wd groups is so that people can get organised, and follow the same (non-destructive) tracks.

Agree with Scott...

If you're trying to make it about the destruction caused by tracks, I think you need a way to fill the foreground with them, and show them leading off into the dunes. They seem too small and unrelated to the rest of the image.

Just my opinion.

DiscoLizard

DoC often make concessions for 4wd, provided they stay within a guided area, there are often DoC rangers on the trips. Briefings before trips specifically set out what must be avoided at all costs, and where vehicles may travel.

Honestly, the best thing for conservation is to get people to appreciate nature - that means to interact with it in a non-destructive manner. It doesn't mean that we should fence off areas and never go near them.

But why? 1.2 has a reputation for focusing issues. DoF will be too small to be useable really at that point, or you could use a macro lens for similar effect.

Fast lenses for landscapes aren't a big deal.

I see lots of cons but no pros for you for this lens.

Shame they cant read the "DOC" rules which stated say below the high tide mark. They will destroy the dunes, plant life and birds nesting.

Actually depending on who they are but there are tracks for 4wders to enjoy and most of them will stick to the track. The Auckland 4wd Club runs a working bee out at muriwai every year, colecting rubbish and bits and pieces of the beach, even in the bush area it is the 4wders doing the work. It is the quad bikes and dirtbikes that are doing more damage to these areas.

To me, the image merged the dunes and the sea together... looked like waves with more waves with more waves.

There are those people who manage to ruin it for those who truly want to help in the conservation efforts... like any society where some 2% of the population manage to make life miserable, e.g., tagging, break-ins, etc. Frankly, the laws are a soft touch in this country... ok i like that but it feels different to the first one which was more abstract. sorry but the tracks are still not a priority in the scene and even if they were i think they emphasise the hilly aspect of the rather than detracting from it. from that distance it is not obvious that they cause any damage at all

Tim 5 to go. We await your 20,000 post make it a goodie as its along way to 30,000:lol:
5000 was the big one I wanted after that I lost intrest in post counts.

WE HAVE A CAMERA!!!! Picked it up today - 8 weeks of waiting for 1.25 hours of time and a new fuse later..... jesus !
And they ever so kindly updated the firmware and cleaned the sensor

wow ama-zing and unacceptable all at once!

Without reading to the end of this thread, I may be guilty of repeating what has already been said....but is it not the case that a woman's ability to multitask comes from bad planning? ;) Theoretically speaking, of course.....
Welcome Wendy.

Geez, either Canon are so understaffed, or their QC/QA dept. aren't doing their jobs properly.

Glad to know that you have your camera back. What firmware version do you have?

It was only two months old when it went in but it now has V 1.0.5
No idea what version it had before....

Geez, those buggers didn't even update it with the latest one - v 2.0.3 (http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos20d/eos20d_firmware-e.html)

EDIT: I am assuming you have the 20D?

After chatting with Tony & Duncan, I need your input on my next purchase decision: Sekonic L-608 (2nd hand but in newish condition) or Canon 2x Extender (price is basically very similar)?

Your thoughts much appreciated.

Depends what you want to do John :)

The lightmeter looks interesting! Have heard the 2x extender isn't great.

That's about as helpful as I can be, sorry.

I feel my mojo returing
So Im on a mission tonight to photograph something but I am going with a thought of how do I communicate through the photo.
LOL. The old Mojo coming back trick.
Maybe try to think of your story before you go out.
Beauty in the city
Litter
Grafiti
Nature coming back
.. Some sort of theme, then try to take pictures to match that theme.

Welcome Wendy.

LOL. Actually I must admit.. my wife is better at planning ahead than me.

Pictures of the camera or pictures with the camera?

Nothing in compo - just a sincere apology and admission of embarrassment from Canon.

Nearly had heart failure when I got it home as I went to turn it on and it wouldnt turn on - turns out they completely flattened the battery while there... a new one in and away we went... everything appears in order and nothing has fallen out *yet*. I'm still very cautious of it and with having a wedding this weekend have sourced a spare... thanks Gouba!! :D

When I took mine in, they took my battery & CF card out. Nothing to loose. I even took the straps off.

Ah yes well.... hmmm....

I'm curious to know how it blew a fuse so it doesnt happen again....

But why? 1.2 has a reputation for focusing issues. DoF will be too small to be useable really at that point, or you could use a macro lens for similar effect.

Fast lenses for landscapes aren't a big deal.

I see lots of cons but no pros for you for this lens.

Congrats :D

Low light, Very shallow DOF and as for the focusing issues it come out most when lab tests are done. According to users not that noticable in the feild. The 85mm is to long and 35 to short. 50 Just right

Still seems like a hell of a lot of money to fork out for a little more light. (1.2 to 1.4) And it is in an area that I know I would probably never use. I.e. most of my photos are taken at around f8

I havnt parted with the money yet. It is 1 of 2 lens Im going to end up with. Its designed for F1.2-2.8 after that stick with the 50mmF1.4

Im happy with my zoom collection and that wont change. I need 1 low light lens and 1 super telephoto.
