Hope the job goes well John, providing they can bring you into an ideal role.
I decided to send my CV into another job yesterday, after lack of responses from everyone else. (2 responses, out of 6/7 jobs). - NZHerald - still accessing, and another job plainly said no, even though I probably out qualified the role. It was data entry, and basic customer service, and not too bad money.
So send this CV in, with a covering letter I typed into the box in Seek.co.nz
5min later had a phone call, mini phone interview, and clarifying points on the cv.
And then at 3pm, had the real interview, and 4:30pm, walked out with a job.
It's just part of Westaff - temping agency for admin/customer service/data entry/it/ blah blah, but would be ideal to get my foot in the door. There was one role going for accounts payable stuff, but my lack of experience in that field, I said no. :o
They said good call anyway, maybe better to accept a temp contract with a job in an all round field such as customer service.
Anyway, it'd be nice to hear back from NZHerald and hear how things went on.
Never did hear back from Canon regarding the Photographic Care department role.
And yesterday there's a new Canon job advertised.

I think it would work with the sigma 70-200 just as well

So, are you working for Weststaff, you temping and useing them as an agent?
If your working for them then have fun! We use them and Manpower to get a lot of temps, and quite a few permanent staff.
Either congrats on getting some gainful employment, lets hope you don't have to keep it for very long ;) :D

Warren, congratulations with the new job. Although it may be temporary it can be a stepping stone -- as you very well know, company intranets advertise jobs for current employees and the opportunities abound. Us relatively new migrants have to probably work far harder at getting jobs in spite of the local experience we/I already have.
I still have one month to go before my 1 year deadline goes, then it is a free-for-all get-what-I-can job hunt. I am reaching a point where I say to hell with all to those who do not want to use my skills and experience to their benefit. It is their loss, not mine.
The guys at the WINZ office were scratching their heads too as to why no one has yet offered me a job given the local credentials, i.e., Kiwi work experience, as well as my command of the language. I'm not after a management or high position job... I'm perfectly happy with an account management or business development position because I know that is what I'm good at.
Oh well, the job will come. I just have to keep on knocking on doors... or kick them in ;-)

Hmm... are mods capable of deleting a post? I put my thoughts into this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=159735) and it disappeared...
I was commenting on whether people could imagine what would happen if someone from Christian or other religions did that in the streets of any Middle Eastern country... Oh well, so much for freedom of expression.

There is no such thing as the freedom of speach on a forum, they are usualy dictatorships.
But its not a discussion I think we should get into, moderating a forum is hard work (iv been doing it for 6 years, elsewhere) and you sometimes have to come up with some odd or very un-democratic rules to keep the peace.
One of them here is the banning of all political and religeous discussion.
However, the mod that removed your post should have let you know it was done, and why.
If you don't get a PM or email then I suggest you PM CDS, Belmondo or Peka and make some polite enquiries.

Yeah, strictly no religious talk on forums. It's the same on most, but as long as we don't mention that, or too rude, crude, sexual, you won't ever find yourself banned. :p
Don't take it personally. It's just their way of removing it before it escalates and causes a 10 page debate, and name-slinging. May have been innocent, but other posters will rip into any slight religious comments. :o

 Yes, that list is going to get longer and longer. The trick is pinning down what focal lengths you will be using at least 65% of the time (maybe 75%?) and then getting a back-up body. You can imagine the frustration of being in the thick of things and having a dead camera on you:confused:

My problem like lots of people probably, is I shoot at varying lengths ie
sports, son plays cricket so use the 70-200 but not quite long enough!
he also does martial arts inside so need 50mm 1.4 or/and 85mm 1.8 as my efs 17-85 is to slow. Then for work I would like to take wide angle house iinterior shots again without a flash and would like a 16-35mm 2.8 or faster with a full frame sensor digital slr, thats where the second body comes in.
so all I need is to win lotto this weekend and I'm set:)
Also look forward to catching up at one of the meets, I live in the eastern burbs where it looks like a few of you guys are from.

If the principal gives you a hard time, tell him/her that you are going to do a time and motion study and how all that reflects on the bottom line. Once she sees that you are saving the school a bundle then he/she will probably pat you on the back ;-)

I prefer http://www.frogprints.co.nz to digitalmax, I tend to prefer fuji processing that frogprints uses to the kodak that digitalmax uses. Alternately go find a local lab, tell them how many photos you have, and bargin for a price. I recently had 300 done at 35c per print at a good lab. They need to put something like 2000 photos through a minilab per day to make it profitable, so you should get a good deal.
Thanks Tim! Is that a book or DVD? That will be interesting not only for wedding photography but for portraiture and other events as well.

Busted.....all true geeks know that untill now George has not alowed the original version to be released on DVD, only his special editions. I, like most Star Wars fans like most of the enhancements he made when he tarted them up for rerelease, except in Star Wars when Han Shoots Greedo. In the original Han shoots first, in later versions Greedo shoots and misses first and it just looks wrong!
Being from Bali, yours could be any version as they are probably pirated anyway.

I think a Sigma 70-200 would be wasted on the 300d or even 10d as the limiting factor at the moment seems to be camera capabilities.
After shooting the mountain biking with the Sigma 28-70 2.8 EX and then the Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO I couldn't see a whole lot of difference.

and a TC. Good review with other 5D owners.

I would have thought the non DG version would be better on a FF camera?
DG simply means it has got extra coatings on the glass, it's supposed to reduce flare and internal reflections because a sensor is more reflective than film. I haven't noticed any of these sorts of problems on my non-DG, It has been speculated by some that it is just a marketing thing.
DC is what Sigma calls their lenses designed for smaller APS-C sensors, their equivalent to EF-S, but with an EF mount.
Tony, I thought you didn't like my 70-200 on the 5D anyway?

Well I think I will sell my SLR kit, don't need it anymore, just got a camera phone, it has an amazing 1.3MP, 4x digital zoom (we all know digital is always best ;) ), live preview LCD, it even has a self timer, who needs an SLR
be careful, we might have to hurt you :) but at least we would have your slr gear :)

Tony:, I don't think you can expect a "sharp" copy of the lens. Is second hand, non DG, probably 4 years old, so it will be not bad anyway.

I didnt, but the cheapest Ive seen a Canon for is $1600 NZD + freight
But with Pete going to a pic-phone I might be in luck..even if the glass looks like its been to hell and back :)
The one thing I HATE is soft glass. I do wonder sometimes if the 5D was the smartest move ive ever made. I guess thats where we all need to know the difference between a need and a want.
Scott you need that new 17-85 F2.8 :)

That is why I have a Sigma. I could justify $700 for the Sigma, but not $1500+ for the Canon, and I am very happy with the results I get from it. I would love a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS, but can't justify the cost. Photography is (just) a hobby for me, with no ambitions. I enjoy it, and am happy with the results I get (except the kit lens), and I have other commitments that soak up most of my money.
That is why I most probably won't be getting the 17-55 f2.8 IS ( I have just checked my lotto ticket!) I'd really like one, but it is just too much money. There are a few 17-85s around on trademe at the moment, but even those are still a bit pricey. I'm going to hold off for a while I think. Tamron have a 18-50 f2.8 coming out, and the Sigma 17-70 look nice....maybe save up over winter and keep an eye on trademe for a bargin as good as my 70-200.
Tony, if you want to give my 70-200 another test before you bid anymore give me a call. I'm going out shortly, but will be home later this afternoon I think.

Thanks for the offer but my mind is set on the Canon, I just have to wait and like all of us I guess thats not easy. I could get one tommorow. Go in to Harvey and get them to order 1 but what does that acheive, just another HP to pay off. They would charhe me about $2400.

ours finally got damaged almost beyond repair by moronic idiots with no respect for other peoples property. This poor letterbox has taken numerous drive by baseball bats and kept standing. No matter what they did they couldn't knock it off its pole :)
as it is they still haven't managed to as it was the pole that broke at ground level. the letter box was found about 20meters down the road.

Guys&Gals, I'm doing a slide show of some 1500 pics I took of my son's school camp a few weeks ago. The DVD will be sold by the PTFA to raise funds for the school. As you may know, integrated schools do not receive 100% funding compared to government ones.
Questions:
1) What are a few good songs for the background music? Do note that this is for a Year 6school camp. Given that it is also a Catholic school, appropriate background music would be great... i.e., no gospel music, but also none of the swearing rap stuff, if you know what I mean.
2) How much do you reckon a DVD should cost? I'm not charging the PTFA anything -- this is my contribution to the fund raising. Besides, it was great practise shooting the kids in different situations. Some think $10 should be a reasonable thing since the PTFA is a non-profit organisation... some say $15.00. What do you reckon?

I have a collection from some local guys who do the school rounds - The Lads - wacky fun lyrics, nice up beat stuff, you probably would even get their permission to use their stuff, they also owe me a favour ;)
Here are some sample lyrics:
There are five cacti on my window sill
And a bonsai tree, living happily - together
In any kind of weather, they get along
I can go into town by myself if I want to
Look around at the world with my own eyes
I don’t have to be afraid
Why do we try to be the same competing with each other
All dressed up in brown cords and pyjamas
Pretending to be cool
And the wackyness goes on...

Fran, I read somewhere (2005 Popular Photography, or was it Practical Photography) a couple of weeks ago saying that the 500 DG Super ETTL II is far superior to the DG ST. Not only is it compatible with the "current" lot of Canon d-SLR cameras boasting ETTL II, it also belts out a fair amount of light. In other words, best bang for the money.

Thoughts and what do you guys think. 70-200 F4 or 70-200 F2.8
Optically they are ment to be the same. Yes 2.8 + 2xTC and auto focus. Yes 77mm filters. The issue is money say $1200 max on trade me $2000+ for the f2.8
My thinking is get the F4 now and trade up later but on the other hand give harvey a ring and get them to get it in and pay the $2400 and you only have to do it once.
The bigma is not sharp on the 5D but its not worth selling either.

I would recommend the 70-200 F2.8. for the type of work that you would like to do. the 2.8 would be ideal. The F2.8 gives you more room to use when you have the lens attached. As for IS or not IS, I found I don't really care for it, so either one would be ok.
If however the $$ is an issue then like alot of peoople you will be happy with the F4. I do believe however that at some point you will find the need to get the F2.8 so why not get it now.
edit: however don't kill me if your wife kills you :)

I havn't fallen down some big crevas, much to some peoples dissapointment :P
I've been here all along, just lurking quietly in the dark corners. I tried to post something a couple days ago but the browser crashed and I lost it. Couldnt be bothered re-typing so I gave up.
I have been down at Ruapehu tho, climbing. If anyone knows the mountain very well, we climbed meads wall. Took my camera but as we were sitting right at cloud level there wasnt much interesting to see.
They were all busy getting ready for June 16th, opening day. They had the chopper flying all the snow guns into place. Word is they will start the snowmaking next week sometime.
I did get some photos of the heli about 20ft from us while we were climbing. He was flying blind in the cloud, so was sticking close to the ridges where he could see them - I dont think he expected to see two blokes, a camera, and a case of beer sitting ontop of the ridge like that! He stopped and looked at us for a bit (posed for this photo) and then carried on his way.

I picked up a 540EZ with a cracked lens cap on TradeMe for $80 to play with and I can see the potential for fill flash now :D
Going to an ETTL capable flash means I can let the camera work out the flash level.
Really all I need is a camera adjustable flash that is bright.
The 2 Sigmas are rated the same brightness-wise.
I'd rather not use the flash at all.

The 50-500 would go well on your camera if you cn aget an adaptor, crop factor is probably around 3X to, so that makes it a 150-1500 :D :D You'll probably looses autofocus, but that is a small price to pay.

Think I got a good deal on trademe today not sure until i see the goods....Bought a large manfrotto tripod for inside work on trademe last week and have been looking for a lighter weight for general work and bought what was advertised as a Manfrotto 200 tripod today for $66.00. I think a 200 is actually a head so i'm hoping the tripod is a 190. will have to wait and see.

the sigma 24-70 is a sweet lens. Be intrested to try a Canon 24-70 but Im affraid of what will hapen to me, after all I was going to get a Sigma 70-200 and then I tryed Petes Canon 70-200 and im stuffed I have been tanted with "L" fever
The Bigma is such a great lens 50-500mm it covers so much range but the light fall off /vignetting on FF. There are only 2 options that can even get a look in to replace it. Sigma 120-300 F2.8 and 2xTC or Sigma 300-800 F5.6

Pete, the lyrics look good... I'm sure that parents and kids themselves will have a blast. How do I go about asking permission to use their songs?
If you fill in some more detail (who what when where how), I will try and call a favour with them...
Do you want to hear some of the songs first?

Go for the 2.8 -- but don't go pecking me with your sharpened beak if Sandra throws you into the dog house ;-)
Tonights discussion in our house...go for broke and get the 16-35 and the 70-200 :)

Is Xtra DNS borked for you guys too? Luckily I cached some IP addresses a while back so I have access to my essential sites...

I have got the 28-135 IS USM which is an ok lens, but I also would like to try out the Canon 24-70. It would be a good gap fuller between my 17-40 and the 100-300. It's just a tad short on the long end. The problem is once you have L fever you just can't go back.
Just say to Sandra that you have a bug which no Dr can fix. :) I am sure she will understand.

Sandra's happy, but when do you STOP. I guess you only buy good glass once. My photography has slowed right down to a crawl so do I need the glass.

Small?
Not even the brushless high pressure super duluxe wash would get it off.
I had to scrub it. By hand.
Gee all that hard work for a ford. :) Anyway I think you should sell it and get a 4wd. that way you can leave the dirt on and it would look ok :)

Lost power for a bit there, as usual 29 minutes since last save (I save every 30 minutes), no noticable DNS outage, but then I didn't visit anything new to notice it.

At Photo & Video, Christchurch:
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM$3,239.48
Once over 120-150mm, IS is essential just because of the magnifying effect of the zoom... And if you are talking TCX2 - IS is required!
