Might go out to Karekare or Whatipu tommorow. Anyone else keen.
Thought I might do this course first
http://www.betterphoto.com/courseOutline-old.asp?cspID=111
When are you going?
Looking out window, I see a brisk Southerly. Looks cold. Maybe you won't want to be isolated at Whatipu in the open. My firefox forecast, showing as light rainshower. Which it pretty much is doing.

I have been offered some work taking shots of completed building and renevating work for some builders for Promo and website stuff, I did some today but not sure what I should charge for it, I said I would put all the images on a CD and they can do with the photos what they want
But just not sure what to charge, anyone know what a good starting fee would be, there will be constant work involved so don't want to charge to much but still want to make some money out of it to put towards my camera gear
Ok first make sure you lisence your work properly and retain copyright, I can help you out with info and documents.
Its REALLY important not to undercharge....this is what I charge for event photography, maybe use it as a guideline, but I want to try and get more pricing info because its what people struggle with most.
Llicense documents, limited to editorial print & web use related to the company (ie. they then can't send the images out to anyone for THEIR company's use), and charge something like $125+GST per hour for time on site, then $95+GST per hour for digital post-processing, expecting that to average out at 2h per hour spent photographing on site. Any subsequent relicensing would be by negotiation, so that's usually $125+GST per image for any other individuals or companies who want them for editorial uses.
You can always negotiate, but thats a good guideline for a few types of work and if say a web image was very small, you could maybe bring it down too $50.
Thats what the pros charge and if you are charging for work, they say you are then a pro. You're in the market, competing with everyone else who's out there, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise; and don't tell yourself that either!! This is a quote.
Does this help?

have you used yahoo widgets before? they are all free and theres some great weather ones that you can link to you own local forecast (they run on the desktop as little, well, widgets LOL - i use them for several different things, i've also got a moon phase one which is handy, ive adjusted it to show phases as seen from auckland

Sure, anyone who wants the documents email me at wcain@xtra and I will send them too you.
Mark, I have the Arctic butterfly (http://www.apix.co.nz/ProductView.aspx?Id=VISAB-SL700)and happy to help you with your sensor dust if you want to try and clean it. Apix (www.apix.co.nz (http://www.apix.co.nz)) will clean sensors with more resistant dirt for a fee.
Wedding pricing is another ball game, I would offer package rates with different offers. Best way to decide is too look up Auckland wedding photographers
and check out theirs :)

Yep thanks
Since this was the first one and there wasn't that many shots and the only PP I did was to place on CD I thought I would charge 3/4 hour as I was realy only there for 1/2 hour took the shots then left.
I said I was able to do touch-ups and that type of stuff to the photos but wouls give him them on cd so he could do with what he wanted.
I may need to get some forms/copyright stuff to put with the photos but I will do that next time, this was just to see what I could do

I'd like to follow this thread, but it's too huge: hundreds of messages every day and I have no time to read all the pages in these days. So, I had an idea. Maybe it's an old or silly one, but you'll tell me: a "national" section of the forum. The first one could be New Zealand, maybe followed other countries (on moderator's decision, or after a request of at least n members...). In this way we'll probably lose the longest thread of the forum, but it would be much easier to "chat" between ourselves about kiwi issues!

Unfortunately we wouldn't be able to start multiple threads everywhere, and most of us, only frequent this particular thread. Or at least commonly.
You didn't miss much though. It has been mostly kiwi talk, and what body should Tony buy next? And should he buy the 600mm for $6000!
I also mentioned I'm moving to UK in July. Just bought my tickets.

you have a point, however there is also a good side to some of the general chat, in that topics are randomly thrown up which some ppl find helpful, and which wouldnt be otherwise if all chat was strictly photo and technical
it also establishes community and trust to a certain extent which is important considering a number of us meet up physically from time to time - saves doing all that 'getting to know you' stuff in person

In regards to the GKPE site I have thought it might be a good idea to have a portal site and maybe a area for wishlists/selling and maybe a FAQ and a tips section for all the little tips and tricks that are discovered and passed on, maybe even a place for forms/docs for release forms and that type of stuff. Also thought of a GKPE Stocksite that we could all put our photos on and advertise, if someone likes the photos then they contact you to buy
Now who has some spare time to do all that, I can allow access and don't mind the use of my bandwith

A good friend of mine plays football for Whakatane, so I've been shooting a game every couple of weeks. I slowing starting to be able to anticipate the action, no random machine gun bursts of fire with the 400D...
My biggest learning has been not to be afraid of high ISO (I have been in the past), you really need it to bump up the shutter speed, I shot most of this game at 1/1000 or higher.

OK, it's time for GKPE Mini: A Night at the Museum!
Tony and I are meeting up for a night shoot tonight. We are meeting at the Museum at 8pm, and anyone else is welcome to join us. If we get board of the museum, we might head off to Parnell or elsewhere to find a church or something to shoot.
If anyone out east wants a lift send me a PM, I'll be leaving 7:30ish.

Savings? What's that?
All my money just went on an airfare. My superscheme, holiday pay, final couple pays will make me survive for at least 3.5 days in London

Hullo Folks.
Random update in the life of Kirst :p
The changing of the guards happened over the weekend (Flatmates / revolving door)
Unlucky for the one moving out, I was very unwell and didn't manage to haul my butt out of bed to help him move. Luckily, he had about 10 mates there and his shift was done in an hour. (It'll be werid not having him around. 6 years he's put up with my very random way of life.. )
The new flatmates weren't meant to start shifting till Sunday, but the first truck load (3tonne flatbed truck) arrived just after lunch on Saturday.
I spent the entire day scrubbing walls, ceilings, more walls, skirtings, more ceilings (old flatty wasn't all that clean, and I've since discovered, left a crap load of old boxes stashed in Harry Potters room - the cupboard under the stairs).. and only stopping, when the next load arrived, to watch
Simons lovely girlfriend, Nakita, even came over to help me. I got to bed at about 1, didn't sleep due to feeling incredibly nauseus. Ozzy didn't leave my side all night. :(
At 8am on Sunday, I was up cleaning again, more walls, and endless supply of kitchen utensils and glasses (I could cater for an incredibly large party now)... more and more truck loads of stuff kept coming. My lawn was a car yard. 3 RX7 Bats (plus one in the gge), a CTI-R, and my wagon. Also countless Bat parts all over the drive, Mig welder, Engine crank lift thing, compressors..
By 9pm the last load was moved in, And I finally gave up cleaning.
My house is in total disarray, boxes and boxes for miles.
The 48" Plasma is nothing to complain about though. And between me and one of the new flatties, we have a most impressive sound system ;)
Oh, there is also about 9 desktop PC's and 3 laptops between us. Geek overload! And the net isn't even hooked up yet
The nausea didn't stop till this morning, I couldn't even be near the smell of food, let alone eat any since Friday. I'm picking I ended up with food poisoning from the dodgy cafe down the road from work on Friday. It didn't help that I was up to my ears in high potency cleaning stuff... (No SS, I didn't drink it ).
I'll have to train the flatmates to shut the internal garage door, too. There is some serious fuel fumes seeping through the house.
I'll try to pop along tonight, it'll be a welcome break from 48 hours of mayhem. :)

This weekend has sucked.
Throat is still a right mess. We went out up to a friend's place in the low end of The Highlands yesterday. And I did take the camera. Me and driving didn't mix, felt rough as sin, and have regretted making the effort today. I took some photos and they all stink. Mrs Dave took some too on my old 300D which is her first ever time dabbling with a camera. And you know what, some of them aren't bad. So I'm chuffed and proud of her.
So far today I haven't got dressed, have necked more pills than seems legal and still feel rough. Very rough. Though we did manage to get a photo of the offending ulcer so I could see what the fuss was about. Not nice. And the latest on the emigration stuff is that docs on the South island are making things difficult and we don't like them any more. <throws teddy out of pram> :(

Don't forget me. Sunset was spectacular tonight but couldn't be arsed to rush out.
Being that I'm trying to learn php and CSS, thought I'd try by making a real world web example. Then I thought I'd try and make a more dynamic site. So I 'threw' this (http://gkpe.freehostia.com) together this weekend. It could do alot including your FAQ etc.

i don't go out anywhere at nights lately, prolly just as well given the aftermath
now i can't relax, i will prolly have to do the go watch tv and fall asleep on the couch therapy again...
which unfortunately completely clashes with the follow-up class: wake up on the couch at 3am all sore and with a stiff neck and crawl off to bed and try to get back to sleep before 4am
uurgh, that doesn't sound good, put your electric blanket on, have a strong drink, massage your feet, go to bed. (foot massage always works :) )

Why are you guys up so late? Don't you have work in the morning?
I think I have an appointment with an x-ray machine...
