Sandra's happy, but when do you STOP. I guess you only buy good glass once. My photography has slowed right down to a crawl so do I need the glass.

Well that's it. the stopping is the hard part. I had thought that the 100-300 and I should be all ok. But checking the pictures from last year and the ones this year, it changes everything. One thing you need to think about is what glass will I need in the future.

However in saying that, if you have got something to get you started and you would like to turn this hobby in to making money then you could wait untill you know what you need. then buy the glass you need.

You could buy a 300 F2.8 if you had the money, but why. If you don't have the need then what's the point.

New topic.. What do people photograph over the winter months? I have been looking into the idea of night shooting around auckland. The night Scott and I went out yealed some good results.

A few customers have been ringing me up complaining and a call to Xtra got an engaged signal.

I completely lost my connection around 7pm last night, was down till well after I went to bed. Someone at work said it was still down at 11pm.

The Xtra help line was down for the first hour, simple over loaded, then they managed to get a message up saying they were experianceing a "National Outage".
Stangly enough only the day before someone in 31 Airdale St screwed up and a whole lot of rural phone connections got "disrupted".

Makes you wonder if Telecom is trying to flex some muscle and show what it can do with all its wonderful cable?
Or if the technology is simply so old and out of date its finaly starting to fail.

Factory Frames.

$1 for 6x4" photos with 6x8" matt. They're just the off cuts.
$1 for the Acid free backing

The 12x8" ones, were in fact 11x14" matts, but the holes just manage to be less than 8" wide, so they photos fit, with a bit of cropping on the lenth.
The acid free backs are $4 for this size

Finally, custom size 12x4" panos, so about a 15"x6" matt, are $5 each custom cut, plus about 4 for the backing.

Moppie

They lack vibrent colour

That comes from 3 things, in order of importance they are:

Subject. If it dosnt have vibrant colour then it will be a flat photo

Exposure. Differnt colours look better when exposed at differnt ends of the histogram, for example Iv found reds look better when a little under exposed.

Post Processing.
Once you get the other two right then you can add small enhancements here.
Levels adjustments, saturation, etc. Use layers.

I noticed that myself, i.e., the lack of colours of the bush or trees (most of them) here in the North Island.

Stark contrast with the SI where autumn/fall colours are just fabulous, especially in Christchurch -- luckily that I've had a key account there which allowed me to visit throughout the year... a shame though that I wasn't really into photography then:(

Here is another thought, my photography teacher many years ago had a couple of good ideas to get your name and/or prints out there.

First up take nice pictures of peoples houses then put your details on the image and post it too them, they are more than likely to stick it on their fridge.

Second find a restaurant who will display your images at no charge to them, and put little price tags on them so people can buy them if they like them, don't forget to put a margin in for the restaurant! I have seen this quite a bit, especially around tourist destinations.

Got my quote for 70-200 from Harvey $3999 "what"! I asked for the non IS verson.

Seems the markup is higher than Auckland camera due to the amount they get in.

All the Cafes at Mangere bridge have peoples work on display for sale as well

Got my quote for 70-200 from Harvey $3999 "what"! I asked for the non IS verson.

My first experience with Canon IS was on binoculars, where the difference is fantastic. No more non-IS lenses after that. My daughter has the 70-200 IS, and was horrified that anyone would consider non-IS. She broke the family's bank to get the lens, but what a difference! (We are helping out with household costs as a consequence.)

Stabilising on zoom, and handheld shutter speeds of 1/10th in low light, are great. Mind you, my stability is nowhere near as good as when I was 20-30! If you're over 45, you too will be increasingly affected. You are unlikely to upgrade to the IS version, and face years of regret and less-than-the-best images. :(

Canon IS rules.

weka2000
16th of May 2006 (Tue), 17:40
Thats what a tripod is for. IS is turned off when on a tripod, the lens is a lot heavier and its a lot more expensive. I could get the 17-40 F4 and 70-200 F2.8 for the same price as the 70-200 IS.

$4k is a lot of money for 1 lens, and I cannot justify that to myself

CliveyBoy

If you are always shooting in circumstances where a tripod can be used, I agree. My daughter, and her daughter, and I all do shots of performers, and multisporters, and functions, so our needs are different. Not that I will ever have the capacity to purchase L.

It is heavier, and my daughter finds it difficult after several hours of shooting.

As I posted a few days ago, you can get it for $3,239.48, which I was comparing to the 3,999 you referred to for non-IS.

I have to agree that $4K is a humongous amount for a single lens... unless you are making a living out of it or have the equivalent of 100X the amount in the bank (or winning the Lotto) making the $4k look like change:D

And since I don't fall into any of the two/three categories then I will have to live with non-IS versions for a wee while more... like maybe till the IS version becomes so common-place that it no longer costs an arm and a leg.

We need to have a group pool, but we have already been there :)

I just dont want to have to pay $2600 to Harvey when I can get it in from the US for $1700.

Its just that I hate having to wait :(.................. get now pay later :)

Mind you with the move I made to pay back harvey ASAP means in a month I will be free and $1k a month for "L" glass
Personally I would rather get it all in 1 hit and be done with it.

1 lens at a time. Still unsure about the whole Studio work thing. I need to shoot a stranger to see if its for me or not. At the end of the day I perfer Nature but that dosnt pay.

At this stage its 70-200 then 17-40 then?

Im wondering if its worth keeping the bigma. Canon 70-200 with 2xTC When would I ever use the bigma.

Tony, IMHO given that you are spending an arm & a leg (and then some) for your studio Warren may have a point regarding the 85mm 1.8 -- you can't find a sharper lens for the money you spend.

If I were in your shoes (which I know I am not in) I would probably ditch the super zooms, retain the mids and shorts for the waterfalls, and invest in pristine primes for your set-up... but that's just me ;-)

You know the problem with lawyers is that they take forever to send out the dam bill. So you sit on the money and wait for them to get around to billing you. Then you have no dam idea what the bill is going to be anyway.

Moppie, I can sympathise with you... I had to sign a pre-nup instigated by my father-in-law when Tina and I got married in '91. Tina was horrified that her father made it a condition for giving us a house.

Cutting a long story short, I signed the papers without looking at the details (which left the lawyers horrified and aghast) -- all I told them was that I didn't care what was stipulated on the documents, I was marrying Tina for who she was and not what she had.

Funnily enough, I've become the favored son-in-law after all these years!

OK, 32 28 40 23 21 7, in that order powerball is 4. If you use it I wouldn't mind a contribution to my wee project, keeping a blackhole contained consumes a lot of power, and we wouldn't want it getting out, in fact it would probably suck up half the solar system, and I am sure everyone will feel quite put out.

Its based on sound quantum theory. It goes a bit like this, the gravitational pull of a black hole is so great that it bends light around in a tight spiral circle before it crosses the event horizon (the edge of the black hole or singularity), at this point for various quantum physics reasons slows and finally stops at the event horizon.

So if you can get something in and out of the event horizon of a black hole you can theoretically time travel, but then there is the minor issue of massive gravity and being crushed to a microscopic speck.

Now quantum physicists theorise that they can recreate the event horizon using extremely powerful magnets and really grunty (nice scientific word) lasers, basically they use the magnets to twist the laser light into a vortex, creating the event horizon where time has stopped.

It is highly unlikely that any physical object would survive a trip in such a device, but it may be possible to communicate through it, so messages could be sent back and forward in time across it, but only as far as the machine has been running not further, so if it has been running for a year, you can communicate anytime over that last year, or to however far it remains on in the future.

Of course this sucker requires massive amounts of power and technology that doesn't currently exist (except in my basement of course), but the theory is sound

Man thats way to much for this simple southern boy. You eastern lads watch way to much TV

Man that reminds me of the day by boss (ex english teacher) gave me a compliament took me a day to get it. I will stick with small words like yes and no, no been my favorite :)

Crickey, deja vu... where have I "heard" all this before... Star Trek, Back to the Future 1,2,3,; The Time Machine, Time Cop, That movie where the aircraft carrier went back in time to WWII... The One, Terminator

Mind you I've done my fair share of time travel... hopped on a few planes to the USA and arrived the same day... left the USA came back and lost 2 days in the process...

Here's one for you IT geeks :p -- what is a good webcam? I'm looking to purchase one and I'm seeing these 480K & 1300K pixel ones on TradeMe and I'm just getting more confused:rolleyes: There are the cheapos with high specs (1300K pixel) and then there are the flash-priced ones that only offer 480K or lower pixels...

I'm also thinking of buying a USB Voip phone that I can use to save on calls to my folks in Manila... I've seen these RJ11 boxes but the technology is way beyond me:lol:

All from the camera shop in CHCH.

now the problem is I know there are some other stuff that I would like to buy. I just don't have the need yet. :)

I have one of there (http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpecification.aspx?ItemID=345818), it works well, and it's only $40 with free shipping.
