john irons most certainly isn't robyn's brother, he was having you on! he is MY MOTHER'S BROTHER!! my uncle john! see second photo, left to right: nanna, john, me, mum

I just sat down and worked it out... I haven't seen or heard of him since 1976/1977. That photo is very much how I remembered him.

Hmmm

As Clive said - thanks and it's taken this thread way off topic.

Cheers mate.

800 pixels never do justice, and would never print well from that resolution.
It's where a decent lens comes into play, when they're still pin point sharp at 100% view.

Still proud of it, and thankful they gave my website link as well

great shots wazza, i like that version of the church

What did you mean by ""shooting through" on his families, a hangover from his own horrific upbringing."?
By the way, what did he die of?
How much gold did you pan then?

to 'shoot through' is to leave without a word and not come back for a long time... his childhood was not pleasant and it gave him serious issues about long term commitment. he was married a number of times.

i dont recall what he died of - maybe heart condition? google it

we got some 'colour' from the pan and flakes from the sluice but barry had some little nuggets too, he showed me once. he was possum/rabbit/pig/goat shooting for DOC and gold panning was more of a hobby.

I just sat down and worked it out... I haven't seen or heard of him since 1976/1977. That photo is very much how I remembered him.

well if you want to get in touch again pm me and i'll see what i can do

I scanned a photo that I picked up from my uncle the other day, picture dates from 1962. Inaugural Arthur Lydiard Jogging Club Run. My father had his Tuatapiri rugby jersey & socks on. He played for them for about 3 seasons back in 1958 onwards.
My father had never seen the photo before. Can you guess which one he is??

very nice - classic rule of thirds picture. Not quite fucussed on the eyes but breaking that rule deliberately eh? (corrected this in pic #2)
Had me wondering if a view slightly lower & half a step to the left would have seperated out of focus rear leg from front leg without getting the hands (talons?) all crossed up.

that would have been better, you're right. unfortunately i was also handicapped by the background - that plain wall wasn't very wide and next to it on either side were 2 very busy spaces

i just changed the WB to tungsten in lightroom to get the blue tint, then exported it from there with a little bit of contrast enhancement. taken with 50mm f/1.8 prime.

the sparrow was taken with my lil ole 70-300 kit lens (bigma too large to lug around the museum all day with a school trip) and had no adjustments except a bit of crop

It shouldn't worry you. The temperature of the planet has been warming and cooling since it's conception, with an overall warming trend which started long before humans existed, let alone built cities and started polluting. We're just on the upward turn of a peak in the overall graph. Eventually we''ll peak and then start cooling again. OMG GLOBAL COOLING. Humans putting so much **** into the atmo that sun can't get rhough. Or some other such scaremongering. Didn't you ever listen to Augie (rip).

Got to agree.

Nzshrimper
15th of June 2007 (Fri), 17:57
hmm - yes i agree that the earth does go through peaks and troughs (temp wise) - but we are clearly accelerating the process here.. and as a species we do have the power to stop (slow down) that acceleration.

If you take an object such as a tree that takes CO2 from the atmosphere and converts it to O2 thus keeping a balance in the earth - cut it down and burn it -(producing more c02 in the process) and don't replace the tree with another tree - what then is left to remove the extra C02. At some point in the very near future we will reach a tipping point that may result in the balance of the earth being destroyed.

The last ice age we had was caused by an event or a series of events - large asteroid or volcanic eruption that blocked out the sun. it may be that the next ice age will be caused by man. but the earth will win. we as a race will be wiped from the surface and the next cycle will begin. - if we act now thou we can slow down that process. -

its not as if we can jump ship and go next door yet..

we are on an island (called earth) that has a finite amount of resources - we have the power to manage the resources - or we could all bury our heads in the increasing amount of sand that we have - and pretend it is not me causing it.

scaremongering - i think not.

Its a bit like a smoker saying that his lung cancer was not caused by smoking.... yeah right.

momentz
15th of June 2007 (Fri), 18:55
I agree that we should act responsibly, and that we may be accelerating the process. But, there is a large amount of scaremongering going on still.
Humans are not the 'cause' of the warming trend, that would happen with or without us. I for one don't believe we have less than a hundred years till another doomsday, etc.

No offence, but all of your arguments have been thoroughly debunked several times. Augie was a nice, but scared and ignorant old man. I still liked him.

The global cooling argument:
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=94

Basically the popular press found an interesting idea and let their imagination run wild. Difference this time is that it's the scientific press who are running wild, and the popular media who STILL aren't getting it.

The warming/cooling cycle argument:
A naive reading of this cycle indicates we should be experiencing a cooling trend now, and indeed we were very gradually cooling over the length of the preindustrial Holocene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Holocene_Temperature_Variations.png), something around .5C averaged over 8000 years. It is informative to compare those fluctuations to today's changes. Leaving aside the descents into glaciation, which were much more gradual, the very sudden (geologically speaking) jumps up in temperature every ~100Kyrs actually represent a rate of change roughly ten times slower than the rate we are currently witnessing.

Here is a list of "enviro-****s" and "left-wing loonies" who believe that Anthropogenic Global Warming is real and well supported by sound science:

My oil burning car seemed to get a bit too low last night, when ferrying a few passengers around - had only topped up all few days ago, (400km back), and that obviously wasn't enough. Good idea of not having a car over the next few months. Now the car I was selling for $2500 is probably worth closer to 0.

My oil burning car seemed to get a bit too low last night, when ferrying a few passengers around - had only topped up all few days ago, (400km back), and that obviously wasn't enough. Good idea of not having a car over the next few months. Now the car I was selling for $2500 is probably worth closer to 0.
Sorry to Kirst for breaking her Rolla, with 254,000km on the clock -
The bottom end sounds to have gone, and running rough, and little power.
Rolling body anyone? :p

Nah, it's well and truly buggered.

It really burnt the oil, and put in oil on 5th June after a wedding, 1 litre then.
And another 500-600mL about 5 days ago.

The fact it's burnt through that much PLUS some, just shows it was time for the motor to go anyway.

Time to find a wreckers I think.
My budget for UK has suddenly dropped a fair whack. GRRRr (I was once even looking at keeping the car till I get back, but though an extra $2-3k would go nicely to settling in)..

Don't berate yourself too much. It was probably worth closer to $1500 in a running state anyway, needing rings replacing with 250 clicks on it. A $400 motor would see it back up and rollering once more. I'd ask $500 for it as is.

Kirst wanted to sell it herself 5 months ago for 3500-4000
I paid $2500 for it.

20V 4AGE with a few other mods.
A 2nd hand engine will cost $800 as it's the 20valve.

I bought a 2nd hand 16V couple years ago for another car, and that cost about $500 plus install.

Cars devalue too much anyway. :)

I sold my 16V, one, with same k's worse condition, not lowered, standard everything, crap stereo for $2000. So this car was at least worth that

only 1.5 litres in 10 days? surely a candidate for a can of Wynns "stop smoke" and sell to some other unsuspecting victim...

For a car that before an engine rebuild, used 4L per week,

It never did smoke that much, only under revving, and even now, despite the awful sounding knocking, and no extra punch or valve timing sound through VVT, it's not actually smoking. My last post on global warming (call me a global warming cynic). I have hard proof that global warming does not exist....

I live in Invercargill and it's frickin freezing.

Also a few years ago, Dickie Attenborough heard this conversation while in Antarctica.

Baby polar bear goes up to his sister and says "Am I a polar bear?" His sister replies "You eat seals, have fish breath, white fur and big paws. Of course you're a polar bear. If you don't believe me, go ask mum." He goes to his mother and says "Mum, am I a polar bear?". His mother replies "You eat seal, have fishy breath, white fur and huge paws, of course you're a polar bear. If you don't believe me go ask your father." He finds his father and says "Dad, am I really a polar bear?". His father looks at him and says "You eat seals, have fishy breath, white fur and big paws. OF COURSE you're a polar bear. Why do you ask?". He replies " Cos I'm bloody freezing!!"

Dickie Attenborough is a boozed up ned I met in a pub one night, not 'the' dickie attenborough.

History does show ice ages come and go, and clearly we had one 10,000 years ago which is still in the melting trend.

But also, scientific measurements of CO-2 in the atmosphere also doesn't lie. It can't be good for us, the amount up there.

and i agree, the bush will be cold because of how damp it is, not because of any wind exposure

I've got a Canon 8000F which has various adaptors for slides, 35mm negatives etc.
It works really well but it is a labourously slow process. Before our family re-union last Christmas, I scanned about 1000 slides & probably 3000 negative exposures. Took many many months doing a couple of hours a night.

My one does 4 slides at a time or 12 negatives. It is about 3 years old and I'm sure that there are better ones on the market now. This one has a feature called FARE which is a scratch/dust eliminator (version 2). I think they are up to version 4 now.

Your welcome to borrow it, I dont use it too much these days.

Have sent one of the flatties off to hire a rug doctor. The birthday boy is out.
Cleaning almost complete, entirely thanks to only me.
One casualty.. I just jammed my finger in the door while I was trying to carry a few boxes... bent the nail entirely in half. I know it doesn't sound painful, but I have acrylic tips, which are so strong they have no give to any movement. And it's literally bent it's way through my fingernail and into the finger..
err.. ouch. F! Ouch even.

wtf 4 DAYS YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME. right thats it no more of this sh1te i am going to find another provider.

about a year ago, i came home and went to my pc to check email
no traffic
so i tried using a browser
no traffic
msn was signed out.. uh-oh, bad sign
so i picked up the phone... silence, no dial tone
went to the non-cordless phone - same.

rang telecom on my cell: "oh yes, we have a large number of reported faults in your area, we suspect a problem with the local exchange. we will send out a technician but i'm afraid due to the high number of bookings there will be a small delay..."

/me expects to hear a wait of a day or two

"... we won't be able to have a tech there before 14 days time"

/me WHAT??????

telecom person verified that yes 14 (FOURTEEN) was the number she had just said and no it was not a mistake. i was like are you KIDDING ME? WTF???

so she said she would add some minutes to my mobile so that i could make calls. i told her it was a prepay. then she calculated a rate of compensation for the phone line at $9 a day for 10 days (she said she was only allowed to compensate after the first 4 days had elapsed). then she added $90 to my prepaid account and told me "sorry about your internet, theres nothing we can do about that"

i hung up the mobile and looked out my front window.

there was now a TELECOM TECHNICIAN'S VAN parked right next door (wasnt there when i came home). i went outside and saw a tech fixing the neighbour's line. so i said hey my phone's not working either... 20 minutes later he had fixed it and gone away and i was $90 richer for a total inconvenience of about 1 hour!

Surf shots are not worth posting. I need a desent ground swell and a bit more light.

Thanks for the kind words

Tony, I like those photos, the waterfall one is quite cool and kinda abstract, one of the best i've seen from you recently - though I haven't been on this thread much so i'm not looking that hard. The 2nd and 3rd are good photos.

Here's a thought from a recent NZIPP regional landscape print judging. If anyone could've gotten the photo just by being at the right place at the right time and putting their camera on auto, it probably won't win an award. That said if it's the top of the Himalayas at dawn maybe that would be an exception. That's not to say it's not a great photo, just not an award winner. It might give you something to think about. Don't ask me I suck as landscapes, ask Wazza :)

Ice and tussock shots are cool, very nice. Bolt could be anywhere.

Could have been anywhere but it was at Cardrona :D

I like the waterfall one. Looks so bizarre and almost shot the wrong angle or something, due to the water bounce - rather abstract looking :)

Just did my good deed for this year. Lent someone my 10D and 28-135 on a 'semi-permanent' basis. Now to convince them this forum is THE place to hang out on the 'net and then have mini GKPE down here. Sorted.

I like those semi permanent loans.
Gave Kirst my 50mm and 70-300 Sigma that way.. Ended up just saying she can keep them. :)

Oh now I know what they mean when they say "DONT shoot into the sun"
Its like wazzas favorite bloody annoying trick with a flash.
5min later I could see again

that one's cool - like a fire or something

flash anecdote: back when cameras were an add-on for phones, a friend of mine got one and attached it to his new phone (it had a swivel so it could face any way)
he was at a party and a girl grabbed it and goes oh cool, held it up to her face to look through and went "click" *FLASH*

unfortunately, she mistook the flash bulb for the viewfinder...
a very bright flash it was too...

Now THIS (http://www.stuff.co.nz/4099286a10.html) would have been fun to capture with a 17-40L :D
