Of course this sucker requires massive amounts of power and technology that doesn't currently exist (except in my basement of course), but the theory is sound

That's a great lens. One of our lady members here in New Zealand has one of them.
2nd hand it's still worth probably 4500-5000
As for house warming, as I said before, unfortunately I can't make it, as I'm photographing a wedding 3pm onwards till late.
Purchased a few more prints on Wednesday, which were delivered today. Also bought 15 more matt boards and backings, and 6 new frames.

Camera house in Wellington has 6x8 prints for 60c each at the moment, that's an excellent price and their prints are good. Other places you pay at least $2, sometimes $8.
My "masters of wedding photography" dvd turned up today, i'll have a watch some time soon hopefully. Wedding tomorrow, just formals so not a big deal.

Nah, gotta have at least one other hobby other than photography.
Well its not doing me any good, I'm locked out of the house, sitting on the deck with my laptop connected via WiFi, I took the old car out to a meeting in Albany, thought it needed a blast in case it decided not to start should anyone come to look at it to buy it, well no house keys on its key ring, and Shona has gone to Te Awamutu for the weekend (I was going to go, but she wanted to leave earlier than I could, so I am home alone :D), but now stuck outside.
The neighbour has a spare key, but she is out and doesn't have a cellphone. If the sun goes down before she gets back, I'm breaking a window...

An excerpt from the first edition (It has been regularly published on www.theregister.co.uk - a tech news etc site for longer than I can remember):
It's backup day today so I'm pissed off. Being the BOFH, however, does have it's advantages. I reassign null to be the tape device - it's so much more economical on my time as I don't have to keep getting up to change tapes every 5 minutes. And it speeds up backups too, so it can't be all bad can it? Of course not.
A user rings
"Do you know why the system is slow?" they ask
"It's probably something to do with..." I look up today's excuse ".. clock speed"
"Oh" (Not knowing what I'm talking about, they're satisfied) "Do you know when it will be fixed?"
"Fixed? There's 275 users on your machine, and one of them is you. Don't be so selfish - logout now and give someone else a chance!"
"But my research results are due in tommorrow and all I need is one page of Laser Print.."
"SURE YOU DO. Well; You just keep telling yourself that buddy!" I hang up.
You'd really think people would learn not to call..
The phone rings. It'll be him again, I know. That annoys me. I put on a gruff voice
"HELLO, SALARIES!"
"Oh, I'm sorry, I've got the wrong number"
"YEAH? Well what's your name buddy? Do you know WASTED phone calls cost money? DO YOU? I've got a good mind to subtract your wasted time, my wasted time, and the cost of this call from your weekly wages! IN FACT I WILL! By the time I've finished with you, YOU'LL OWE US money! WHAT'S YOUR NAME - AND DON'T LIE, WE'VE GOT CALLER ID!!"
I hear the phone drop and the sound of running feet - he's obviously going to try and get an alibi by being at the Dean's office. I look up his username and find his department. I ring the Dean's secretary.
"Hello?" she answers
"Hi, SIMON, B.O.F.H HERE, LISTEN, WHEN THAT GUY COMES RUNNING INTO YOUR OFFICE IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS, CAN YOU GIVE HIM A MESSAGE?"
"I think so..." she says
"TELL HIM `HE CAN RUN, BUT HE CAN'T HIDE'"
"Um. Ok"
"AND DON'T FORGET NOW, I WOULDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO TELL ANYONE ABOUT THAT FILE IN YOUR ACCOUNT WITH YOUR ANSWERS TO THE PURITY TEST IN IT..."
I hear her scrabbling at the terminal...
"DON'T BOTHER - I HAVE A COPY. BE A GOOD PERVY AND PASS THE MESSAGE ON.."
She sobs her assent and I hang up. And the worst thing is, I was just guessing about the purity test thing. I grab a quick copy anyway, it might make for some good late-night reading.
Meantime backups have finished in record time, 2.03 seconds. Modern technology is wonderful, isn't it?
Another user rings.
"I need more space" he says
"Well, why not move to Texas?" I ask
"No, on my account, stupid."
Stupid? Uh-Oh..
"I'm terribly sorry" I say, in a polite manner equal to that of Jimmy Stewart in a Weekend Family Matine Feature "I didn't quite catch that. What was it that you said?"
I smell the fear coming down the line at me, but it's too late, he's a goner and he knows it.
"Um, I said what I wanted was more space on my account, *please*"
"Sure, hang on"
I hear him gasp his relief even though he'd covered the mouthpeice.
"There, you've got *plenty* of space now!"
"How much have I got?" he simps
Now this *REALLY* *PISSES* *ME* *OFF*! Not only do they want me to give them extra space, they want to check it, then correct me if I don't give them enough! They should be happy with what I give them *and that's it*!
Back into Jimmy Stewart mode.
"Well, let's see, you have 4 Meg available"
"Wow! Eight Meg in total, thanks!" he says, pleased with his bargaining power
"No" I interrupt, savouring this like a fine red at room temperature, with steak, extra rare, to follow; "4 Meg in total.."
"Huh? I'd used 4 Meg already, How could I have 4 Meg Available?"
I say nothing. It'll come to him.
"aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggghh hhhH!"
I kill me; I really do!

The reality is when do you need F2.8? Most of my photos are F8 and above.
I understood that problems like chromatic aberration and diffraction are handled better with larger-stop lenses, giving better colour, more consistent levels over the whole frame, reduction in fringing, etc.
Using an f2.8 lens at f8 is likely to give a more reliable image than an f4 lens at f8. Is that not so?

But at double the cost 70-200 F4 $1200 70-200F2.8 $2400
I will find out what lens get the most use and then upgrade if I can justify the double price tag.

Scott you need a new body. Makes a change me after your gear
I'd love a 30D, but can't justify the $$. I am not a good enough photographer to push the limits of even the 350D 99.9% of the time. My next piece of kit will be a replacement for the Kit lens. I was mildly tempted in Harvey Norman this morning. 17-40 for $1699 (which I know is about $300 more than Ak Camera) with 15 months interest free. So in effect $300 interest. But I need to pay off some other debt first, then it is my wifes turn to spend some money on her hobbies, then I might get a 17-40 or similar. Maybe by then the 17-55 will be a more sensible price.
Anyone interested in a sunset shoot tonight? Of course it would have to be somewhere with water to capture those reflections?

If it is for moon shooting, a telescope is a far better/cheaper option, a $200 telescope will shoot a sharp full frame or greater shot of the moon.

I have used it, and didn't really like it. I don't find myself wanting more reach than the 70-200 and 1.4TC x 1.6 crop often enough to buy that sort of lens. It is too big and heavy to want to carry around with me as well.
Once upon a time I lusted after 500mm, but decided to go with a better shorter focal length lens instead, and I don't regret that. I f I was in your position, I would have sold the bigma and put the money into a 70-200 f2.8 (IS???) instead of the f4. But each to his own.

Tony, have you had a chance to test the 17-40 yet? I have heard a few people say that you get nignetting on FF cameras with that. Nothing like you saw with the bigma.
Wondering if you have seen any. I read somewhere that the problem is that the sensors are not flat like film is. They have "bumps" which is why you get more vignetting on a FF sensor than on film. Something like that anyway.

We are going to do the fair thing by these customers and give them a goodwill credit equivalent to four days' Internet use. The amount will vary according to customers' plan but it will be an average of about $3.25.
I thought the cheapest plan was $29.95, that is just a little under $4, so where do they get $3.25, and an average!

Just looking at pics from the weekend wedding. Shutter speeds in dark church around 1/30th - 1/50th. Everything with the 70-200 IS is sharp (except for a little blur if the subject moves), about 30% of the Tamron shots are usuable. That's not a problem because I way overshot to take it into account, I just remembered someone on the thread a couple of days back asking if IS is worthwhile.
IMHO, IS is invaluable for anyone who works hand held in low light. The Canon 17-55 IS is looking really good... but also a little short and very expensive. Maybe i'll just use the monopod.

One thing worth looking at: clear, contiguous hard drive space. It's no use looking at what Windows reports as available, as the space must be "available" to Proshow, which likes large numbers of contiguous free blocks. As do many other prog's. Defrag may give a picture of the fragmentation, and the largest block available.
The O&O defragmenting software is good for sorting this out.

Batch resizing is easy.
mogrify -resize 800x800 *.jpg
Go and get a coffee (from up town :D ) and it will resize a folder of jpg's to a max of 800 on a side, keeping the aspect ratio.
tim
22nd of May 2006 (Mon), 03:47
Or use the image processor in CS2.
Proshow Gold does tend to lock up if you give it massive amounts of photos. I'd split it into multiple shows, each with 100-250 images. I might resize them as well in your case, though I never do since I make smaller shows than that.
I still climb things at wedding... i'm just more careful how I get down!

Well you have to use an image of the same proportions, such as posting on POTN at 800x533.
I made a little image about 125x75 pixels on the desktop named it watermark.jpg
Then I open a new image which is 800x533 reading for posting,
Click Record action on one of the windows
then Open the Watermark from Desktop, CTRL A, CTRL C, then close the watermark, CTRL V on the 800x533 image, move the new pasted layer down to the bottom right, and on the layer window, change opacity down to something like 35%, and then Flatten Image, and either CTRL S to save , or stop the action before hand just to be safe.

Warren Williams Photography at Craft World has officially gone live today. It's cost about $800+ already and that's with discounted print rates (half price at Digitalmax).
As for Moppies question a long time ago, about my job.
It was a temping agency, and working temp admin jobs with Westaff.
I've yet to have any calls in the past week and a half, so have still been applying for jobs.
Had two negative responses today from 3 jobs applied last night, however the third job phoned, missed me, and left a message.
I phoned back, saying hi, blah blah, "you applied for the position of security". - I'm thinking what the, did I really get that desperate? No, she says security dispatcher on telesales. She asks my experience etc, and what my expected salary was. Whoops, the max prepared to pay by the company was about $3-4 an hour less than what I wanted.
So then she asked me a few further questions, and realised I may be suitable for another position. Also telephone centre, but this one is Collections Officer, down in the Viaduct. Starting salary is as good as Westpac was with overtime on Saturdays, so I'm keen. Made an appointment 50min later, which meant I had to get ready extremely quick and find the location. I happened to park in the building right next door, which was a lucky guess.
Gave me a windows test, and typing test, which of course I blitzed.
So now I'm going through to the interview tomorrow at 1pm, and the job is with GE Money. Some great benefits, including 5% super scheme, without any money needed from me.
Let's just hope I'm not repo'ing a 5D, eh Tony? :p Haha, just kidding, I may repo it anyway, just so I can take it.
