Hi All

Well, I ended up buying a 430EX flash, and had a go with it last night taking some photos of my niece before her school ball, pity she decided smiling wasn't in - think I got the light OK for my first go (considering I really had NO idea), and the shots would be nice with smiles - it reminded me why I like shooting cars instead of people

Do you guys ever have that thought "I realy dont know what im doing" with your photography. Im talking about the ability to understand the techical side with the design side to "create" an image?

I get this every now and then..... Maybe its just a gowth thing as you develop yor skills

Thoughts

Very rarely now Tony. I get to the stage now with anything I'm shooting, where if it's not what I'm after I can look at it, think it through for a moment and know how to change it. If anything the area I struggle with is having the same grasp over PP. But the major area I get every now and then regarding "not knowing what I'm doing" is in the general direction of what I'm doing with my photography, what the fuel is for my fire. But technically, camera and lighting controls, I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I've struggled with this whilst shooting in the last two years on one hand.

im sorry i thought this was the spouting complete balls thread,,, ;)

Why, I thankyou... :p

the reason i say this is because i look at photogs work and go i wonder what they did to achive that.. where as a real photographer will know and how to improve it..

And following on from what I said to Tony above, I genuinely think that the key to this is practice, and throwing yourself in the deep end. Often. And hard. Make yourself struggle. You learn quickly.

whilst we are here - your input please. - i am just not sure..

The houses don't bother me, maybe, possibly a bit less distracting with less DOF, but not really an issue. The bit that takes the impact away for me is the reflection, which generally weakens the overall strength and boldness of the image and the rock itself.

So how then do we "learn" to "create". How do we move on from been lucky to been deliberate with our desisions.

Sorry im been "deep" tonight. Someone said something to me today which got me thinking a lot.
The question was put "Do you feel guility about the amount of money you have spent" and I guess I have to be honest and say YES
My guess for this year so far about $14,000 total made $230.00

I think Im a complsive spender :)

Put value on the enjoyment you've had through photography (include time spend on here), add that to you $230 and see if you feel less guilty.

you know it would be ok, apart from the houses in the background :(

And yet to me the houses make the photo - it becomes a comment on man vs nature. Man's reach is sprawling across the surface, yet you have the jagged rock thrusting upward through that surface. Works for me...

Oh, yes, crop out about a third of the reflection. I didn't realise, but I'd done just that by not scrolling to fit the whole image on my screen.

Been surfing Trademe and Autotrader. If those websites are any indication of the motoring pleasures to be derived from NZ, then dear god, may he help you all! :p

How many autos for a start? And how many autos, followed by engines the size of a lawnmower to follow up? Blimey!

More seriously, I'm presuming petrol's cheap over there as I see very very few diesels? That's kinda the driving force of why people buy them here.

Nzshrimper
5th of August 2007 (Sun), 14:52
with the heavy oil burners you need to by road k's - this is then makes the oil about 5 cents cheaper than petrol so the savings are not worth it.

autos yes they are everywhere... however its not the same driving over here. - a main road here is the same as basic B road in the UK. motorways are pretty non- existent as we (english) know them.

also remember the max speed is 100kph or 60 mph but the motoring pleasures are there - the real open road tight twisty mountain roads - long coastal drives - as opposed to getting on the conveyor belt of the m way and notching 100 mph with the other 1.2 million ants. ;)

manipula
5th of August 2007 (Sun), 15:13
60mph? Does anyone stick to it? ;) As you'll know the max limits are 70mph on motorways and 60mph on open roads here but as soon as the going gets empty the open road speed limits are open for abuse as far as I'm concerned here. Twisty coastal routes sound ace to me.

I'm in the unfortunate position where selling my car here in the UK looks like it will buy me very little over there. :( No money to put to it either...

you will be surprised what you can get here for your dollar

.. and 60 kph does anyone stick to it.. hmm - yes and no. the handlebar moustache patrol - will ping you for speeding and they can get quite harsh. there is a lot of revenue collecting going on. if you are caught going over 40% of the speed limit - you will instantly lose your pink driving ticket..
below that fines are about $130 - $500 plus. as well as the demerit points. (max 100 then say good bye to the pinky) points award for style and power.

0 - 10 kph =20 points
10-20kph = 30
20-30kph =40
30-39 kph = 50 plus
40 + kph = gooone....

plus the donation to the christmas party fund they may be looking for...

they are also a lot single lane roads that they call main routes. - with the odd passing lane. you hit a truck or a campervan doing 80 kph you can be stuck for some time.

There is the fact that passing the country at 140 kph you miss the best bits... and the roads - hmm not the smooth billiard tops you may be used to.

My brother suffers a diesel Toyota Starlet. He said he'd keep it a year or so untul it died then he'd replace it with a real car. It's still going 5 years later.

yes, and no. We get wildly varying rates-of-knots with the "Sunday drivers" doing whatever idling speed their engine can provide, and then you get the "must get there 30 seconds before anyone else" type. On those twisty roads you'll meet both. Then you'll lament the lack of dual-carriageways over here. Of course when you do come up to an overtaking lane, everyone speeds up and only the very brave/silly actually gets any further ahead before the dreaded "merge" at the far end where no-one actually merges causing the typical ABS testing that only panelbeaters enjoy.

It is worth pointing out that they can and will ticket you for 0-10kph over the limit, probably more like 5-10kph over though, I do know people being stung for 56kph in a 50 area, I got stung at 61 in a 50 a little while back, and they don't seem to let people off with warnings any more.

Oh yes just about everything is an auto now, I think jap imports did that, I know several models of new car that no longer have manual option. You don't want a manual for Auckland traffic, not sure about Wellington though.

I don't get why people complain about being ticketed for doing 61 in a 50 zone. The limit is 50. 61 is 22% over the stated limit. Do I drive that fast? Sometimes. Is it anyone elses fault but mine if i get a ticket for driving 22% over the limit? Nup!

Sorry Pete, didn't mean to pick on you, I have just heard alot of people make similar comments lately, and i don't get it.

Agreed, but... 50km/h is just ridiculous as a speed limit.

Just make it 60, and actually enforce it. Much more simple.

I have a friend who is a police officer - she told me the other day that while she's pulling traffic duty, she's going to make a real effort to stick to the speed limit.

"What? You're going to do less than 50km's?"

"?! No, less than 60..."

They all charge like wounded bulls, but I was more after bang for your buck - so to speak.
Some may cost more, but their services may be more stable, too.
Cheers to you and Miss SS for trying. I'll put all the names on a dart board and see which seems to pop up most when I fling a dart at them ;)

Thanks a lot Chris, he has done all the web design himself too. He has recently updated the site and Im not sure how to tell him that the images he had up before were much better then some of the ones he has up now ;). I will start off by telling him about the tabs and maybe go on from there. He is a bit like me though, doesnt much care what anyone else thinks, just likes what he likes and so up it goes

that's who I am with, I have found there support a bit lacking in same cases. A while ago when I had internet troubles it had taken a call to Telecom to get it fixed. They couldn't seem to get the idea to send a tech around to look at it. Even tho I had recommend it.

Loads! All of it, all the time!
The zero shock 'reasonable use' is around 20GB/month. for $59.95 - who is complaining.
I signed up for orcon phone (another $59.95) and everything (Perfect consumer) - cause it all works out cheaper - well phone is the same, but more services.
Telecom - $57/month, for land line, etc and call minder
Orcon - $59.95/Month, for land line, call minder, caller display, spot etc..

Blimey, we all paint a pretty picture of driving in this part of the world don't we? Let's not forget the person who drives at 90 in the 100, 70 in the 80 and then continues at 70 through the 50 limit !!! I have to say driving standards in this country are appalling. I personally think it's down to how much traffic there is. Sweet FA at this end. People don't expect to see another car on the road and simply pull out. But then when you hit the road around Lake Wakatipu....ahhhhhh...it makes it all worthwhile.

How many autos for a start? And how many autos, followed by engines the size of a lawnmower to follow up? Blimey!

Says the man who drives a GTi Pulsar?:rolleyes::lol::lol:

Which, I might add you could get here for about $5,000 with reasonable ks on it. Or, for the same money you could buy a Jap spec SiR Civic, which I know is faster.

The opening of the Irish and Russian markets to used imports has had an effect imports here, the really nice Japanese cars have become a little harder to find, but there are still plenty of them.
At the moment cheap to run, simple, "city" cars seem to be really popular to, basically we get what ever was the fashion in Japan 7-10 years ago.

LOL. It would appear that a 'Pulsar' seems to be a model name used on alsorts over there? Here the only Pulsar there's ever been was the 4WD turbo Sunny. But yes you're correct, it's worth buttons but it's reliable and a riot to drive. Civic with the mad engines and Integra R's are on the browsing list currently, and it's nice to note there are three AE86's on TM currently. Hehehehehehehe.

New Zealand new vehicles and imports don't come with indicators, they're an non-usable optional extra.

Also they turn off the traffic lights when there is no points-man as people ignore them so they are better turned off, so indicators are also pointless, they may communicate your intentions to other drivers, and we don't want that or they will get complacent.

Also watch out for live stock, they have got to keep those 45 million sheep somewhere!

Ok - preferences please :)

Flatties are on the move, as you know, with the net connection. So I'm shopping about for a new providor.
I currently have Call Plus business plan (flatmates) with max up and down (usually 4.5 - 5.5MBps down and 500 - 700kbps up)

Orcon I can go Max up (768kbps) and down (7.6MBps)- with 'Zero Shock' (reasonable use) @ $59.95 + free modem (though I have two modems)
iHug - Max up(800kbps) and down (7.6MBps), 10GB month plus ihug phone @ $70.00
Xnet - Max up and down (but it doesn't say what the max is), projected 20GB/month (you can select your use) @ $70.00
I haven't looked at Slingshot yet.

I was going to say, look up which one gives really good rates/deals for your lovely phone calls to UK... But then I see on this last page, you've already confirmed one.

Ummm, I'll pass on reading 425 new posts in 3 1/2 days!! (that's 121 posts a day.. 5 an hour - oh it doesn't sound like much like that :p)

Just spent the past 4 nights in Hastings again at the other house. Met family I haven't seen in 11 years, and also 18 years for another cousin! So only took family pics, no other real photography.

So the next few days, involves internet.. internet... oh and some internet.
Maybe download a few movies, on my internet plan.. ;)
Typically download around 880kb/s...

AND!, youtube isn't throttled back by Vodafone.. So the videos don't stutter, but in fact will download in 5-10 seconds, for a few minute clip! (20 times quicker than telecom, even though the connection is only double the speed)

Off to blog some UK pics now :p

Indicating around roundabouts is funny as hell, I've even been following a car that's done it differently on each of 3 roundabouts in a row - guess they're covering their bases and hoping they'll get it right at least once... Then there's those who drive without their lights on at dusk. Dunno if it matters for you bumper-to-bumper-street-lamps-all-the-way folk, but around here it's dangerous. I agree, fantastic shots Warren. I know you are an excellent photographer, but in saying that I gotto get me a MkIII, especially in regard to what you say about the comparason to the 20D which is what I have. Did you get the latest firmware? Not that you need it, you talk about the focus positively and show great results. Those eagle shots are awesome!

Wazza
6th of August 2007 (Mon), 19:45
Thanks both of you :)

Well I had the 20D for 2 1/2 years, and always felt I had pushed it to it's limits in terms of the subjects shot, high iso, landscapes, astro shots, pretty much everything in varying conditions, and the only way I could get better results was to get a new body.

The web images already look more saturated and are sharper out of the camera.. But it is the full resolution images, and how well the 1DIII can keep varying highlights under control. I did at one point look at 20D and 1D in exact same conditions in Thailand, around some buildings.. The sky was completely blown out on 20D, and good with ND filters. The 1D had some detail in sky, and with ND filtes, comes out fantastic, and even richer colours. I haven't touched the colours on most of the shots. I'm not a photoshop artist, and lack those skills. Kirst and I often said we'll take an intermediate photoshop course to move forward, but mastering technique first is probably more beneficial.

Oh yeah, firmware is as I bought it. I'm not sure what it is, but serial is 508xxx, so an early body, but I haven't had focussing issues. Anything, birding, landscapes, buildings, is always in focus as I would expect. I can't wait to do a wedding...
But, my rates will have to double, or triple even, to cover the extra post processing, due to files being considerably larger. As Cliff mentioned once, definitely on the lighter side. ;)

You're too nice Wendy. *pops big head*

I also make it a habbit to tell them when they are alive anyway. I keep really short accounts with people that way if something does happen then there are no regretes.

I think people get a chance to say how they really felt about the person, even if they were unable to express it to them while they were alive. Funerals let people say goodbye and can bring some small amount of relief to people who are suffering from the realisation that a part of their life is forever changed, in the company of other people who are similarly affected.

You may feel it's pointless because you're already dead, I think it has meaning to the people who are left behind.

I can't see how they'll improve the 5d, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford the replacement.

Must.... Resist....

Do it....Do it....Do it.....

Hey Im not trouble

Oh Scott the trick around the temptation issue is dont go to Auckland Camera

How did your pics come out last night. What was the Sigma like?

To be honest I probably would have bought some stuff. But I was there for 15 minutes, and nobody said a word to me, and i wasn't in the mood for chasing them. So they lost a sale.

It probably wouldn't have been the 85. Wife and i already aren't talking.

Had a similar situation there once... Now I go to Glam, much friendlier and better prices :D

I'll hold onto your 5d for you if you think it will help the marital situation :D

Well my Sigma 70-200 is noticably softer than Tony's Canon at 200mm f2.8. But at f4 and above there is very little in it. What else did I learn looking at the photos? I need a new tripod, it sucks!

Well we have just had a mircle...Mum told daughter that dad is comming to stay and look after her and shortly after all pain had left and she is able to walk again.

What am I going to do?
Any wise parental advice welcome. Man I thought woman were complex but kids are worse.

Well picked up new video card and 2 x 160 gig IDE drives today so may do a rebuild.

So I gather you wont be selling your Sigma 70-200 F2.8 for more than you paid for it

Nah, it's still a good lens, I just have to be aware that it is a bit soft at f2.8. I'll keep it, at least untill the rest of my line up is complete.

Love that foreground Scott, wicked texture. Is it the lens or the photographer you recon?

At sunrise I was at my desk, and now at sunset I am still working at it!

You know what, I've just relooked at that picture, and it is crap! I've been trying to use Adobe Camera RAW, and it's made a mess of that image.....I'll try again.

I don't know that much about editing raw's but I find that If I use the canon software I get the best results

does anyone have any tutorials about learning editing raw?

OK attempt number 2, with Canon DPP:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/scotttnz/IMG_0147_1.jpg

You know what? That image was shot at 40mm, so I don't need a 17-40 after all ;) Not that that will stop me :P It was a very grey dull morning except for about 2 minutes as the sun peeked over the clouds.

Evening all

As per usual, lots & lots been going on, where to start.

Congrates to Chris & Scott on aniversarys, I must be old!! Our 18th is in a couple of months.

Stunning shots Warren.

Scott, I dont know what to say, that 5D will cost you! Keep hanging out with Tony & watch the bank balance deplete:p I like the first version, the colours on my monitor appeal to me more, the second one, the sky seems too blue for a sunrise shot.

Was it a pano or has it been cropped, it looks like it has some seams?? but it could be my old eyes:lol:

Anything else will have to comment latter, dinner time.
