If my source is acurate, I don't think they got much done either.
I was amazed all the cell sites kept working, altough the networks both got badly over loaded.

Man....am I the only one who did any work today.......Damn generator.....
From where I was, it looked like only us and the police had any lights on.....although we had a few interesting moments when the generator had a few hick ups.....thought we were going to have to go into "shut 180 servers down before the UPS battery runs out" mode.
Shouldn't the UPS talk to the servers to tell them to shut down when it's almost out of power?
MattL
12th of June 2006 (Mon), 09:59
Tim that works fine for small (one ups per box) setups. But when you start running on large UPS systems where there is only one UPS per rack, it gets a bit harder.
In proper installs (as would probably be the case with 180 servers) the power runs throught the UPS before even reaching the machine room.

This afternoon wasn't too good in terms of the available open cafes in downtown Howick -- ended up in an Irish pub:lol: (Barrel Inn?) for a job interview :D
Ah the Barrel Inn, a faviourite haunt of mine for a Wednesday night quiz amongst other random visits. My second home almost, only 19 Guinness pints to go before my name goes up on the 100 pint board. I'm almost starting to feel a bit like Norm from cheers there.
I've always had good expereinces there, so I hope they have conveyed to you in regards to your job interview. Good luck with that. I'm sure the Guinness gods looked down on you and smiled.

...just like to introduce myself as a fresh member to this forum. My name is Aaron, I live in Hamilton, New Zealand. Not sure how to start a new 'thread', if you'd like to inform me of how to do this, that'd be just chipper.
Does anyone know where I can by a 'tube level' to fit onto my hotshoe? (as opposed to circular that is... I have one of those).
Welcome Aaron.
How's the new filter going that you purchased in Auckland Camera last Friday?
I was having camera envy at a nice camera name, and Aaron here possibly having lens envy? or trying to figure out why anyone would want to lug around such a heavy lens.
Yeah so f2.8, but it's damn sharp wide open, and awesome DOF.

So for the next GPKE, what are the locations? I have always thought that photographing a marina, or even for those that like macro, flowers etc some gardens somewhere. what about wildelife ?

Filter is beautifully doing the job it was bought for, which is; aid toward timely shutter speeds thus creating a little movement in otherwise 'still' shots. I'll attach a couple of photographs taken around 6:30 this morning. Warren, your image has extraordinary dop for f2.8, what was the focal length for that 'drift' pic?

Oh yes, I should have mentioned such aspects, huh. 5D, 24-105mm, neutral dark grey filter a.k.a ND 8. The city was taken first. When the colour temperature increased, I zoomed in a wee bit tighter on the crane and tanks. If anyone else was up that early, perhaps they could sympathize with the fact that afterwards it took about half an hour for my limbs to warm back up, everybody say "aaaaaaw".

John is getting rid of his medium format since he decided to go digital. He's into portraits and suggested to have a look at the sharp 85mm to begin with.
The things we do for our craft... ideally, I wouldn't want to sleep in a car in the middle of winter and in themiddle of nowhere... if I had to, I would choose to sleep in a longish station wagon with seats that fold flat... and a companion that looks smashingly good and long legged ;) We all can dream can't we?

So, who got disconnected?
We had a MASSIVE lightening flash here, all the lights flickered and my PC restarted, then only a few seconds later an EAR SHATTERING Thunder Clap, the whole house shock, quite noticably.
Once the PC had rebooted I then couldn't get onto XTRA.

Good morning GKPE!:p
Just back from my sunrise shoot -- it was a pleasant 6 degrees and I didn't have to wear my gloves! I just hope I have some to show for all the hard work ;-) I got to the end of Sandspit Road (in Howick) an hour before sunrise took the meandering footpath down to the beach and waited on the muddy flats... it was crisp and clear and I was anticipating a fantastic sunrise from my intial impression...
But wow, the weather can change within a quarter of an hour... from great to bleak... BUT, I made the most of it and it is what counts:D
Now back to checking my pics. Will post a few later.

It was taken at F9, 1/250th, 209mm focal length, from about 30 metres away, with the background about 50m behind the car.
Sounding like you think the lens is full time F2.8?
No didn't think that, just seemed as though it was implied that you used 2.8 for that shot - "Yeah so f2.8, but it's damn sharp wide open, and awesome DOF" - so left me wondering why such great depth of field? F/9 makes much more sense. However, nice shot.

The extension tubes I ordered arrived this morning, thus distracting me from post processing the pics of sunrise:confused:
I promptly slapped that onto the Sigma 24-70 and also tried it on the Nifty and I can say ''holy crap!" Now I will need to think of focusing rails :(
These tubes are the best bang for buck next to purchasing a dedicated macro lens. I will post a couple of "normal" and "macro" shots from the Nifty for you later.
So, who wants to have a play with the tubes after I run around shooting pics? I remember Pete putting his hand up and wanting to try it on the 70-200... anyone else?

Both the Spitfire and Mustang "saved the day" when they were needed. I have to agree that the Spitfire had a tweaked exhaust compared to the P51. I've always liked the silvery sheen of those spruced up P51s... The Spitfires I came across were always painted in RAF colours...

Tony, the extension tubes work with your largest aperture, and in the case of the nifty - f/1.8. I wish that there was a way of adjusting the aperture on the lenses -- it can get really difficult getting so much of the area in focus when using the 3 tubes together. I probably might end up just using +1 or +2 on its own rather than stacking the tubes 1+2+3 together... I still have heaps to learn... and I will try the tubes out more on the 24-70 as well as my other 2 lenses and see how it goes.

I seem to remember reading something on here somewhere about locking a lens at a smaller apature, I think it involved taking the lens off the camera with the DOF preview button pushed or something.
Basicly I think the apature will stay where ever it was last set to when the lens is removed.

Moppies right. Put your lense on your camera, cam in Av mode, set your desired apature, hold the DOF preview button, and remove the lense. It will stay locked in that apature untill the next time you put it back on your camera.

I have the 50mm, i've used Wazza's 85mm briefly. If you have enough space then definitely get the 85mm, it's incredibly sharp, and 1.8 is plenty at 85mm. The colors from that lens are great too.

I have hurd alot of comments regarding the 85 1.8 and how great it is. Even Pekka loves this lens. Some even say the 1.4 isn't even worth the price when the 1.8 is suitable.
To replace the 28-135, I was thinking of getting a 24-70 F2.8 and the 85. As the 100+ lens I got is F4. But really I don't think I need to get the 85. Does havinga gap in the lens range really that bad?
