I have hurd alot of comments regarding the 85 1.8 and how great it is. Even Pekka loves this lens. Some even say the 1.4 isn't even worth the price when the 1.8 is suitable.

To replace the 28-135, I was thinking of getting a 24-70 F2.8 and the 85. As the 100+ lens I got is F4. But really I don't think I need to get the 85. Does havinga gap in the lens range really that bad?

Having a gap is not bad if you don't really need the focal length. A prime like the 85mm is just ideal for portraiture shots... and if the general sentiment is to be believed, primes are far superior IQ wise compared to zooms...

Aaron, was that pic intentionally made to look grainy... or was it because of all the mould, moss, and gunk? ;)

If it were not for the crappy day, I would have to say that lighting was a bit flat... other than that, good effort... especially getting the brain ceels working... there are days like that... and sometimes I cannot be bothered to lift a finger :o

Thanks for your comments, 'tis appreciated. Please also consider the following detail.

The original (and much larger file) shows the moss etc in a little more detail (looking closer helps to determine it is moss and not a poor sensor. Nevertheless, if the result comes across grainy as opposed to detailed moss, then conceivably I failed to acquire my target objective).
The photograph is not supposed to look beautiful, rather, drab and cold. I also wanted to simulate the dullness of the day and knew that the poor overcast lighting would help to give such an effect. From your comments, it seems as though this was achieved. However, do you think that perhaps a soft fill-in flash would have helped with the lighting, or do you think it would have taken away from the desired effect?

I welcome anybodies critique.

Aaron, now that I have the full story -- I agree that you captured what you set out to do. Fill in flash would have probably given it a different twist. As for the grainy look, I was just stirring the pot... ;)

Unfortunately I got it on behalf of a mate ($480 off TM) but I will be borrowing it :D

OK then, a rugby game between Shirley Boys High in ChCh and Nelson Boys...
Just your normal rugby game apparently :D

The lens may be over 10 years old but it still comes up with the goods.

I haven't done any tests sorry, but I would guess by F2.8 it's pretty good. I can have a bit of a play with it and let you know if you're seriously considering the lens. I'm very tempted to get the Sigma 30mm F1.4, and I will get it once I get back into IT.

Wont be any new lens for a while Im just planning ahead :).

Sandra and girls off to Ausy for a week in Sept. Then a new car for Sandra. We are doing up the house so new wallpaper, paint etc.

As far as glass goes I think Im well off and camera is great. I am always looking out for a 20D for my bigma but still a bit high or they have a bunch of stuff I dont want.

The flue is just about gone so I need to get out and about. This time of year I think the only real challange is the "City at Night"

I'm going to be an ass and suggest that the time of year should not inhibit ones creativity (perhaps with the consideration of those nearing forty who would prefer to stay in the warmth of a house).

O.K, O.K, I know, bold of me since I have not met you yet hey? Despite that, I must say I feel sorry for your poor camera sitting alone all by himself simply because his owner has decided to go all nocturnal for the winter. :)

Hey, what's all this talk about nearing 40?!?!? I turned 42 last month and I don't feel a day old past 18... that is when I'm sleeping:lol:

Remember, it is all in the mind. Just don't listen to your joints cracking when you bend down to pick up your camera... ignore the failing eyesight... or falling hair...

But seriously, 40 is a great age to be discovering the joys of digital photography, among other things. In all honesty, that "Dawn at Shelly Park" series last Saturday was the first ever I've done in all my years of photography;)

Like my sig says: Learnign something new each day...

Dalsa Semiconductor has fabricated an image sensor with more than 111 million pixels. The company claims the 4 x 4-inch charge-coupled device, configured as 10,560 x 10,560 pixels, is the world's highest-resolution image sensor and the first to break the 100 million-pixel barrier.

Dalsa, a division of Dalsa Corp. (Waterloo, Ontario), said it has delivered the chip to Semiconductor Technology Associates (STA; San Juan Capistrano, Calif.).

STA developed the chip for the Astrometry Department of the U.S. Naval Observatory with funding from the Navy's Small Business Innovation Research program. Dalsa manufactured the device for STA at its wafer fabrication facility in Bromont, Quebec.

Well think about this for a second. Why does a nearly 40yr guy go out and buy $150 worth of sexy lingerie for his wife. I will be getting more than the warmth of my house.

As for the camera sitting by itself I dont think so not with $1500 worth of studio lights.

Older and wiser..... Dont forget to wrap up warm when you go out in to the cold

Yea I did watch the ads. They may be comical, but some of them are miss leading. I got myself a new laptop, which is up and running in 1/2 an hour. I didn't have to download new drivers or read manuals.

But in all fearness the good thing about mac only having a small percentage in the market, is that they have been forced to make machines that works really easy out of the box, with all the software one ever needs. I do think windows has got a few things to fix. Better than it used to be. However still give me a PC. I can upgrade any part of computer x86 machine with out buying a new computer.

I do the Windows at home

There used to be a time when the Mac was far superior to Windows when it came to post processing pics and videos... not to mention the fact that Mac pioneered in the real "Windows" system. That is probably why it became a "standard" for those who were very keen in getting the best to process pics they made a living off... plus the fact that it was their way of sticking it back up Bill Gate's backside.

These days, with technology at par, and software just making workflow far easier just compared to 5 years ago it is a matter of what one is accustomed to, or how deep one's pocket is... or how one succumbs to the funny adverts.

Wow, that was hard writing all that before 9am... I need to find a job!!!

Hey Aucklanders
Have any of you done the Diploma in Contemporary Photography at unitec? Or do you know anyone that has...good/bad?

I've been wanting to do it for ages but thought full time study was out of the question...but we're moving west so I may as well see if I can get in.

I now have to go get a portfolio done. Ideas on prime sites to see in AKL would be great!!!!!!!

Any advice for a portfolio?

Thanks all ur pix are so inspiring.

Did anyone else notice last nights CBD power outage? Sure, it was not quite as large as the last one. I was at work, and at 2006 the power cut out for two seconds. The console[1] I was operating at the time stayed up thanks to the wonders of UPS. But two of our three buildings went into evac.

That makes for an interesting night for the security team. Our buildings have one of the largest access control systems in the country. around 400 doors individually controlled - and they all unlock and open automatically on evac.

I've never seen them run so fast!

Elyse: I'm not too sure on courses. I don't think any Kiwi on these forums has done a course. We've all self taught, and gained knowledge through this forum.
As for capturing Auckland, I like the domain/winter gardens/and capturing Auckland in its night atmosphere, and dawn/dusk, where the sun can give nice effects. I'm working downtown now, and walking past the viaduct, there's always some awesome uniquely Auckland views, whether it's some boats with the city skyline in the background, or imagery of Americas' cup yachts.

Elyse, as Warren says, probably all of us are self taught, and, speaking for myself, have learned more from the forum and chatting with the guys during the mini or full GKPEs. It helps too when you have heaps of books to borrow from the local library (something that some Kiwis take for granted I should say -- it is a fantastic "free" resource)

If you are looking to add the certification into your CV then possibly... but if it is just to learn to shoot digital is the most fun you can have learning to shoot. But that's just me at 815 in the morning ;-)

Thanks to all of you who came back to me.

I was thinking of having as much variety as possible just to show I can do a bit of everything. I cant say I know how to do all the fancy techniques yet but isn't that what a course is for afterall?!

I'm really itching to get back into study and itching to do photography. Office work just doesn't cut it. IT can get so predictable :(

I really suck at being self taught and do well with a bit of structure/guidance.

Also in terms of a tripod, what would you recommend. I'm wondering if I'm out and about doing landscape shots and want to get them as sharp as poss maybe I should just get a monopod to save the hassle.

The viaduct sounds really interesting. I may just try it out during the day sometime. When it isn't crappy weather.

What do you all take pictures of when its raining? Or is that time for editing etc.

See ya!

Suggest you get a very good tripod. And depending on your budget there is a good range to choose from. Due to my budget constraints I stuck with the tried and true Manfrotto 3021BPRO (though I would have liked the magfibre version;) ) + a 468MGRC2 ball head -- a combination that I am quite happy with especially when the wind is blowing. As long as you level the camera properly, landscape panning won't be an issue since the base swivels. Some will find a pano heads more appealing.

You might want to get Weka2000/Tony's opinion on his tripod set-up which is sturdy + the centre column converts into a monopod. If I remember correctly he purchased this from someone on TradeMe.

Regarding variety -- that is a good approach, and then you can focus on what you really like to do. I'm beginning to have a real liking for macro but am still learning to maximise the tubes and limited DOF.

I use a Manfrotto 055PROB, which not sure how it compares, but it was the bulkiest one they had at Auckland Camera at the time. It cost $360, but the centre rail, can be taken out and put horizontally to do macros or something putting downwards.
The tripod mount won't connect straight to a camera, the screw is too big, so need a ballhead or something, another $145....
Monopods aren't that great, they are annoying to shoot with, but do take the load off a very heavy lens, such as my Sigma 120-300. Recently at D1NZ, I found myself shooting without the monopod, and hand holding everything again.

"The importer". They are a soild tripod with ball head handle grip type thingy  but has a built in monopod. It comes with 2 attachements so for me 1 is always on my camera and the other always on my Sigma 50-500 so I dont have to unscrew and swap over all the time.

Its heavy but solid, the highest its goes is about 6ft which is great for moon shots. Legs fold out to 90 deg $200 comes with carry bag

I agree with wazza monopods are a waste of time.

I have this set (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=353324&is=REG&addedTroughType=search). It's very good, but if you need fine control and have heavy camera/lens i'd get a different head - with that one I set it, let the pistol grip go, and gravity tugs it down a bit of a way. It was a lot cheaper to buy from B&H than in Wellington, but Auckland camera has some great prices sometimes.

Elyse: the 055PROB is exactly the same as the 3021BPRO -- one is the American code, the other is the European one.

I dont like the idea of a setup like Tony has. The only time when you should be using a monopod is when its not convenient / practicle to carry around a tripod. Having a Tripod/Monopod two in one means that you always have to carry around the tripod anyway!

Buy a tripod, and a monopod, then spend the time getting used to shooting with a monopod.

The sharpness of the 1.8 isn't an issue - it's not too bad if you can get it to focus correctly. The 1.4 is a bit sharper at F1.8 I think, but the main issue is that the 1.8 doesn't focus accurately.

I not really to worried, if you happened to be doing some then I would be interested. I have found that with my shooting style I don't really need a 50mm, either 1.4 or a 1.8. So if anyone is interested I would be happy to sale my 50 1.8 for a price to get rid of it :)

That could be dangerous, knowing someone that can get camera gear in for a good price. One could end up spending more than what one should :)

If anything like last night there wont be a cloud in sight.Im keen on a trip out west. We would need to be out there about 3 ish to make it worth it. I worked out it costs me $30 to karakare and back. So I go out for a while. Waterfalls, the beach and then sunset.

I was told yesterday I should go and shoot the sunset, get out of the house. I had a head ach and gerneral felt like crap. Going out was no an option.
Today, as soon as I looked outside my first thought, mmmm, great day for photography.
Unfortunatly I have to have dinner on the table for Amandas family at 6pm. :(

Just dug out all my 58mm filters (Canon 50mm F1.4 has 58mm thread) Had a play with my closeup filters and IR. The front dosnt turn so they screw on without changing the focus.

IR is best done on still days with full sunlight.....umm just like today

Edit.. First IR didnt work out :(

IR first atempt. There seems to be a center hot spot. Can be seen in other photos.
Need some clouds. Different tress produce better whites than others.

I have decided I have better things to spend my money on than driving all the way to Piha. I'm going to find somewhere local to shoot the sunset.

Here is my best effort from yesterday:

Can someone with a properly calibrated monitor tell me what they think of the colour etc. I think this 21" I got might be a bit out.

I'm calibrated - it looks a little orange but not too much so, like it's a late afternoon photo. The lake is a nice blue, the grass on the left a bright but not too saturated green. The bench is blown out quite a bit.

Cool, sounds like the monitor is not too far out then. One of these days I will have to buy a screen calibration thingy.....
I noticed the bench was blown out. Shame, would have been a good pic otherwise. I really like the contrasting colours.

I agree with Tim, just had a general look at you site, and some really nice photos, but there seems to be a general trend towards them looking a bit dark.
Wonder if the brightness on your monitor is turned up a little bit to much?

Thanks guys for the comments, it looks like I should get my monitor calabrated. How much are those devices for getting the monitor setup right and do they work on a LCD?

I went to havey normans today as my brother is looking at for a camera. He almost brought a 30D. However they had a 5D there, hmmm it's a shame I didn't take my CF card. It's a nice camera and love the big LCD on the back. I didn't know how bright the view finder was untill I look at thru a 30D, or how wide 17mm. Gee that's a nice camera.

They also had a Fujifilm S3 Pro. Even tho I am sure it's a nice camera but it just felt wrong. When in portrat mode the shutter release felt in the wrong place. The sales guy seem know what he was talking about too when it came to cameras. I was supprised, but then he was using a nikon D200 so how much I can trust him, not to sure.

I like the photo. Lake Rotoroa? I am looking at it on a Spyder-calibrated AOC 17" LCD monitor. I feel that the lake is a little too blue, more than one would expect from the white sky visible through the trees. The colour palette is great. You didn't ask about composition, but I wonder if a better balance could have been achieved by moving a little to the left to place the seat in the "golden" 1/3 spot.

My spyder I bought new for NZ$280 CIF when they were selling out that particular pack. I demonstrated this and the Huey (loaned by Colour Management Ltd) to our local photo society. The Huey is NZ $280 also. The reaction was that the Huey is great where the ambient lighting changes through the day, but the spyder gave a more thorough calibration, taking 3 times as long, and many more colour steps. They huey remains connected via USB, and has monitors to actively adjust for lighting changes.

One member found that he could by the Huey from elsewhere at $180, and ended up with two. He may still have the second one for sale.

Both work equally on CRT or LCD monitors.

You should've used my Optrix while it was floating around in Auckland! Oh well. Mine was US$200 odd from B&H and seems to work well. I have to get around to reading that massive Bruce Fraser color management book I bought.

Another helpful book is Sybex: Color Confidence - the digital photographer's guide to colour management; Tim Grey 2004.

Chapters: Foundations. Photoshop Setup. Display. Scanning. Digital Capture. Optimization. Output. Workflow.

one of the things that I am concered most abou tis the fact that I am slighly colour blind. I wonder if that has any effect on the result.

Otherwise colour management does my head in. Trying to understand the relationship between monitor, photoshop and the printer is almost impossible. for me anyway.

Pete: A new temp record today as well?

It was 1-2 * cooler air temp, and ground temp would have been in negatives with ice everywhere today.

Yep my new record, a day after setting the last one:

-2.3degC

And that was air temp, approx 2.5m above the ground.

I like the shot, Scott. Was the sky naturally graded like that, or was a CP filter or other filter used?

Thanks guys.

This was taken with the 10-20 @ 10mm, with a cokin P ND grad. I think it was the ND8 I was using. The grad on that filter is a hard grad, and was set at the horizon. So the colour graduation you can see in the sky is natural. I just used the ND grad to try to balance the foreground with the sky.

Unfortunately it resulted in the water being a little more overexposed than I would have liked. Setting the grad at the shoreline may have worked better.
