32bit and 64, contrary to their earlier statements about dropping 32bit server support. Hence me even _trying_ to run it on p3s

Im in thinking mode. Yes Im at the hatching another plan again.

I do have a couple of Issues. Will the current "L" glass cut it on 21mp.For landscapes F22 can be limiting (cp medium format)

I want to do panos. They no longer make the Hassy X pan and I dont know if there is a digital yet.

So doing a 16:9 aspect crop may be an option as it will overcome "movement issues with my current method.

Here is a guy already doing well in Auckland

With the 1Dmk2 in portrait mode with 5-9 stiched photos I should have ample size?

The trouble is with my panos is at 100% you notice all the defects esp water, and vegation.Things dont line up and they ghost.

tony use a bloody tripod to help you.. that will solve a number of your issues. (and it will be lighter and cheaper) :)

ok - work with what you have for a while - show a steady return for 3 months prove the market. then say well love the return is there, now i am going to buy this and this. As this will increase he returns.

To be honest i think the biggest issue is the shift work - which i a real hard thing to do over a long term period.

do an honest account of spending - and then return that with sales of gear and services.

include everything - this includes trips - petrol etc.

set it up as a business and run it as one. We know you can take great images - show us you can run a business.

I'm the bread winner in our family, & anything over 100 Euro is out of our budjet. Therefore I invest a bit of time in stock photography to get a return there.

Evening all

Hello to JJ.

Tony, I'm trying to understand what you are meaning about going to the 21mp sensor. Are you looking at cropping your pano/wide shots from 1 exposure from this camera.

1dsmk111 = 5616 x 3744 pixels
5d = 4368 x 2912 pixels

say printing pano 36 x 12 inches (3-1 aspect ratio)
from crop of 1dsm111 = 5616 x 1872 pixels
at 36 inches wide = 156 pixels per inch (quite reasonable print per inch)

from crop of 5d = 4386 x 1456 pixels
at 36 inches wide = 121 pixels per inch (again quite reasonable for a print this size)

Oh I have an old Comapq DL360 G1 I am going to biff out. It's got 2Gb of RAM that might work in your server if you want to try it. I'll swap you for a copy of your Windows 2008 CDs. Save me from downloading them:lol:.

Thanks Tony, firstly, thats is great!!

I thought that was what you were trying to do.

Couple of things, how much have you got into the panorama software that we both seem to use (Panorama factory)?? I have not done very much with mine at all, mostly auto-actions but there does appear to be some quite advanced correction aspects of it. I really need to print out the manual and study it.

Secondly, have you had a pano printed and mounted in line with your plan of action?

Reason I ask, I have a client, the lady of the house does not work, (dosen't need to). She does "good works" in the community. She also does a lot of entertaining. If you could get a print into her home, lots of other people with an excess of income over expenditure would be exposed to it. Just a thought

Panofactory is basically auto mode for me as well. Set the camera and focal lenth and away you go.

I go to get one printed and keep finding editing mistakes. I will have some that are about ready for printing (PCL in parnell) then I have to work out the framming which im not sure about due to peoples personal tastes.

Nice Pano Tony.
As there is not a huge difference between the 1DsIII and the 5d, it might be worth waiting to se what the 5D replacement will have for specs. Might be what you are after without the high price.
On the other hand, you are paying loads of money for a large sensor with loads of pixels, just to cut some off and throw them away.

As I mentioned, I just got the book from Andris Apse. He also does a lot of amazing panos.

Quick question for those that edit movies -- what software do you use? It looks like my older stuff doesn't want to read the new formats...

New formats? What are the formats you're editing?

For the record, for video editing I use;

- Adobe Premiere Pro (v1.5 - when editing on PC)
- Final Cut Pro (version 4) when editing on my Mac (which is very rarely given that it's not that grunty).

All my video is captured directly off the camera to DV/Avi format (for PC), then edited using that format throughout to avoid further quality loss. The beauty of using the DV format is that you can then spit it back to tape with no quality loss - after all it's all zeroes and ones.

If you're trying to edit MPEG or Divx type stuff, it's worth bearing in mind that those formats are considered 'end formats' and not really suitable for editing (although there is software available to do so - windows movie maker even I believe).

Hope this ramble helps.

I use Premiere Pro 2.0 - it's more on the complex side but it does the job, If you want to go to a higher end than premiere pro have a look at Avid Express ;)

I played with that for a little while. Could never get my head around the fact that it wouldn't handle the AVI files directly out of the camera. Although I never tried capturing using it.

Is Express still free? (when I last looked they had a free version for home use that was quite cut down)

Hi all.
Tim mentioned this place in another thread and suggested I show myself here.

Me:NZer, male, stunned to find myself in my forties - how'd that happen? where was I?
Living (alone) in Titirangi, West Auckland.
Worked in the software engineering industry for a while - that folded (long story) - went back to Uni to learn something else - molecular biology.
Currently in employment limbo pending motivation and hopefully a doctorate. Future uncertain.

Meanwhile, I wanted to get my photography interest going again. I'd bought a bunch of OM gear long ago, but the whole film thing was just so slow, and for a long while the digital thing wasn't good enough. Jumped into an A70 P+S, then just got totally frustrated with crappy macro focus, lousy flash exposure control and shutter lag. I decided to spend some future money on a dSLR. The budget would really only stretch to a 400D, but along came a 30D at a great price ($1450 new NZ warranty). Now I'm struggling to get a decent lens at a price I can afford.

Photographic interests/ambitions - mostly botanical/documentary "macro" work of NZ orchids.

Lousy with people (not just taking their photos - I'm basically a hermit, so this is a big step!)

Anyway - Hi.

Its amazing what people will take.. hahah its funny just sitting and watching them swoop

once i put out a large box of old videotapes (used blanks) which were growing that white mould on the reels... as i drove into my driveway about an hour later i saw a random guy looking in the box, so i helpfully called out to him that he didnt want them because they would wreck his vcr, being mouldy. he heard me and said oh, thanks.

i parked the car around the corner and walked back up to my front door... the box and the man were gone...

Chirs a tripod will not help with windy conditions. Means also spending 2K on a pano head and tripod. When the weather is still no problems they stich perfect (handheld).

hey tony ive just looked at that link to the WIDE gallery you posted earlier: IMO your panos are about 5-10x better than that person's work - yours have interest and colour and depth, and are of unusual subjects or viewpoints, his are not bad photos but quite ordinary, just sort of like longer basic snaps with one or two eyecatching shots

An easy start would be to jump on the various team web sites and just do some direct approaches. I'd tend to print a few and send a few copies off to them - email can be ignored - then again I got a magazine cover through sending an email as a first contact.

And Tony, I've told you before, for doing panos, you need the head and some better software. I've a 2.5mtr wide shot on the wall at work taken down on the pit straight at Le Mans in the howling wind. I used a wind break, a decent tripod and the head, and we ended up with 18 shots and that thing printed at 300dpi. It's absolutely flawless, not a single imperfection in it. And it will go bigger.

Finally made it to London eye on Friday night, with my mate Adam from Newcastle.
(I also left Siggy 120-300 out of bag, to save on weight, and with it.. Left the tripod mount.. So I walked around London with a big tripod, and realised I didn't have the hexagonal plate. :( - had to make do by propping the camera up on walls - as in this case above

Saturday watched the Rugby, and took photos inside Canterbury Cathedral - again, testing ISO quality on 1DIII - haven't looked at them much, but a couple of snapshots looked pretty decent in low noise.

Sunday, again found myself in traffic snarl ups, caught tube around London, and photographed Buckingham Palace.

I'll probably find myself catching the train into London more often, and doing some night/evening photography - costs around £8-11 for off peak day pass.

I also shared a few of these pics the other day:

Sunset is coming so early now.
When I got here, it was close to 9:30pm, now it's already before 7:30pm in just 2 months change. Soon there will be the daylight savings change no doubt, and it will be sunset at 3:52pm! And sunrise around 8am. I'm not looking forward to winter in that respect. At least in Auckland, sunset doesn't go earlier than around 5:12pm

Wazza
10th of September 2007 (Mon), 15:08
Cricket, you'll need a 400mm+ lens on a 1.6x crop, or 600mm on a 1 series camera.

(That was when I've shot at Eden Park before). The best sharps are tight crops of full action. Gmen on these forums has posted the best examples. If you're at a smaller pitch, 300mm might do. Or 70-200 with 2x converter, of even a 100-400L if you can borrow one.
You'll likely find your 75-300 is rather soft after 200mm

I started school in London. I can remember going to school in the dark, & coming home when it was almost dark. The pits.

Some nights I get home late anyway. Job isn't that bad. Was only the final week of month when targets and bonus are really pushed. I'm waiting for the outcome of this month. If we achieve our targets, I wil stay til end of November, getting a bonus almost as big as a monthly pay. So can then leave then, and have 6-8 weeks off travelling before going back to NZ.
If not, looks like I'll leave early October, get another job till Christmas. After being in London a few times recently, I'm really missing out on what it's really like to be in London. I should be working there, but transport gets a bit. At the moment, it's practically nothing. £1.50 a day in petrol - no parking costs. If I catch the train into city, looking at £8 a day.

Iv been there a couple of times.
Its mostly open farm land, very steep and hilly, rather a lot like the North Kaipara head.
The actual harbour is quite small, with limited acess, and lots of mud flats. Again, like the inner Kaipara.
Only the southern head land is accesable by road.
Its very, VERY high, but offers excellent views over the harbour and the town ship.
The Northern head is just one giant sand dune, only accesable by boat from with in the harbour, or a very long dangerous drive down the beach from further up the coast.

make sure you check the car ferry times, from memory they stop running early evening (we almost missed the last one south)

i know everyone shoots the trees - thats the challenge: bring back photos that DONT look like everyone else's

if you want LONG dunes, go further north to the head of 90-mile beach
if u thought that lake at bethells was dune-y, u aint seen NUTHIN yet lol
they are HIGH and WIDE (another really bad photo but see how little the buses are? and we had only just climbed to the top of the first row of dunes, there)

(orientation: the beach is off the bottom right of the photo, follow the stream down. behind the photographer is the coast, more than a km of high yellow dunes to get there)

Which dunes?
The southern point is a rocky head land, about a 5 minute walk to the edge from the car park, which is a 5min drive from the township.

Its VERY exposed up there to, won't be nice if the weather is even a little bit bad.

Ok who wants to go for a long drive up North Friday night, sleep in car then saterday going for longer walk take some photos untill sunset then driving all the way back.

Where???

Recommended.
Especially, if you get the boat from Opo across to the dunes. There should be good shots of people sandboarding (or whatever it is called). Then walk up to the top (about 40 mins from memory - take water, sun block, polariser). Back across and to the south head for sunset, or even from omapere beach. The fish/chips at Opo are legendary.

Thanks Peter. I thought it was pretty good for a P+S, although it took a lot of attempts before I got lucky with focus and flash exposure.

Ooooops!
:oops::oops::oops:
I just checked my notes. That one wasn't with the A70 at all. It was the 30D with my Zuiko 50 macro/3.5 and Olympus T10 ring flash. Exposure is still tricky though. Even with the T10 in its low power mode, it is still bright at this range. Exposure has to be controlled by aperture and that makes DOF control an issue, and focussing in the dim viewfinder with the lens stopped down. Not having a suitable tripod doesn't help.

We're doing a bit of building photography on Sunday, just wondering if anyone has an UWA we may borrow ?

The 17mm isn't quite wide enough :)

I have absolutely thrashed my 10-20 (Sigma F4.5-5.6) since I got it. Never thought it would, but it's become my most-used lense.

Then again, I haven't exactly been out shooting fun stuff recently either. Most of the shots with it have been indoor and they've required the wide angles to show as much detail as possible.

Really glad I bought the thing though, it's been worth it's weight in gold.

I'd be into something like that. Not sure on my availability around that time though, March is a heavy month so far. I'll know closer to time, but I can be tentatively penciled in....sounds like a crap load of fun.

Yeah. Then I have my final round a week or two later, then off to the Aussie GP. Busy month. Looking forward to it though.

V8s are back at the AGP this year, so I'll have ample time to get my hotdogs. Queues are always real short when the V8s are on track. Hehe.

Total cost of weekend works out at around 1K. We stay at a friend's sister's place - no charge, but help out with some food etc while we are there. Just take the train and tram to the GP each morning. Whole process takes around 30mins to get from door to track.

Way cool weekend. Not to be missed if you can spare the time/money. Melbourne itself is great place to shoot too. Lot's of real cool sunsets etc (weather permitting, but Melbourne hasn't had serious rain for close on ten years the locals tell me).
