Hmmm, I wonder what the porpotion of people that have a greater value of camera gear than their car is? I would also think Tims ratio would be pretty high, as I beleive he doesn't have a car! My camera gear is worth around half my car, a few months ago it was worth four times my car, at least I can say I got a better car rather than selling three quarters of my gear ;)

Yeah it's damn cold every day. Any colder today?

It actually keeps cooling down until maybe 20min after sunrise as the suns heat still isn't enough to stop the cooling temperature. Unless the thermometre is directly in the line of the sun.

One would think it very hard for the trade me system to fail and send seller details out to two members on acceptance of an offer. You would presume with the sheer volume of trades going through the system each day this 'problem' would pop up and have been resolved quite some time ago by their developers. I'd email them. In the very least it will help them improve. Shame you missed on it though. I'd put more money down on the failing of the seller over the failing of the trademe engine.

The only way I like my glass now.

On a good day.

Well just done some "wife" shots with both 50 and 85 with flash @F16 Its close but I think the 85 is the winner.

Its strange not using a zoom, but it forces me to full the frame and gives me time to compose.

Sandra found it a bit tough having had a tooth pulled at 1pm :(

Dam flash lighting is hard. I need to re read what I have read.

theflyingkiwi
27th of June 2006 (Tue), 04:56
Have a tooth pulled isn't good. I hope she is feeling better. A liquid dinner was it ? At least you have a model that you can use to try out different lighting.

I had read that the 85 is sharper and a better lens than the 50. It's also better for the portrait photography.

I have found the best way to use a lens is go somewhere with it and because it's the only one ya got, it's a case of having to try and make it work. It's a restriction than can lead to being creative.

Im inclined to agree, mind you 85mm is good for head and shoulders in a small area. With the 50 I can get full body.

Glad I got both. I cant see much use for the 85 else where but the 50 may be used in more situations

The issue is the light fall off with the bigma and 5D. But I guess I need to learn to use ARC and work out the vignetting function. The only time is use the bigma now is at the zoo.
I do know at the moment my main lens is my 17-40 for landscapes. So much for wanting a max of 3 lens, up to 6 now and I still dont have a macro 1:1

I wouldnt, what I was saying it would be he only 1 I could afford.

The only time I would ever need a long prime would be for surfing photography but the bigma did ok.

The 2 primes I do have now are for portraits. The rest of my glass is for landscape / daylight photos and are all zooms.

As I say the only thing I dont have covered is 1:1 macro but that will happen already know the lens Im after :)

You are welcome to try the extension tubes... after Pete I think... In spite of some of the limitations I am finding it a joy to use. Just today I was playing with the tubes on my 80-200 -- not bad... and the shooting distance is better than the 50mm... not sure though how the pics will turn out... the 80-200 isn't the sharpest

What I meant, is that if you cropped the image from the 5D by 1.6 in Photoshop, you would end up with more or less the same image that you would get from a 30D. You would be cropping off the areas of the image with light drop off, just like you would be by using a 30D. I know it would require getting used to, because you are not using the whole field of view you see in the view finder. But it is a solution that does not require spending money on another body.

I'll take two of those.

I was in some camera shop in Queen St, the ones I tend to avoid due to higher prices... Just checking their prices on the 1DIIN... $6999, but Auckland Camera are $6800 and being a regular customer, sure could knock some off too. :)

Just one will do, no point in being greedy. I would then have the 10D as a backup. However if I got something like that I would have to do more sports to justify it.

Where do the Aucklanders recommend getting matt boards cut, my local place is charging $12.00+gst for 16" by 20" which seems high. If you have somewhere cheaper you know of and could share it would be appreciated. thx

Ive gone off getting a 1D. The only thing it offers me over my 5D is weather sealing.

I have a list in front of me with my next lot of puchases

They include Remote timer, Remote trigger, off camera flash cord. I need to get to auckland camera to get a 58mm step ring for my cokin setup and a couple more Gradual Natural density filters.

I have to wait for the next pay day

You could try Factory Frames (Albany & East Tamaki)
To be honest I've only had stuff framed there but they seemed reasonable at the time.

Wazza's probably someone to ask as he'd had some matts made up. Wazza?

Indeed, all my matts at Craft World and local Cafe are 11x14" and 6x8"

the large ones are made to fit a 12x8" photo, when the matt has the widest 40mm border.
There is a slight bit of cropping length ways, maybe 10-15% but the width only has 5mm overhang each side to put the shot in.

The 6x8" matt, with a 30mm border? Fits a 6x4" photo nicely. And then can be framed into a 6x8 easily.

The 11x14" are $4 a matt, and $4 for the acid free foam backing

And the 6x8" are $1 for a matt and $1 for a backing

I would guess the 16x20" would be about $10 incl.
Then add on a backing, which replaces the frame softwood backing

My input...

Downunder...
I cut all my own mattes. I have a Logan cutter and have made my own cutting board that is almost foolproof to get mattes right. My local framers sells a matte to me for $20 (though you can probably get them cheaper) and I get four mattes for A3 prints. For them to cut the same size matte is $20 on it's own!!! Plus I get four smaller mattes for A4 prints from the 'middles'. I think it saves me heaps.

Weka...

Tim, are you talking about using Adobe Bridge? I found that to run slow on my machine. At the moment for any RAW processing I use DPP. Any jpgs I view them in ACDSee and then drag and drop in photoshop, crop etc and then save in aother location.

I 'learnt' by looking on the internet. Loads of resources for cutting mattes.

I probably ruined a few, then mucked up a few but they were useable unless you looked really closely but since I made my own frame and actually took time when cutting I can 'knock' one out in under 30 minutes. Remember though, measure once, cut twice, curse, swear, get a new piece and try again:confused: ...no that's wrong isn't it, measure twice cut once.

If you need/want a diagram of the frame, let me know.

Yep I use Adobe Bridge. I download with DIM from www.alanlight.com , batch alter color temp and exposure if necessary, at the same time rating 1-5. I label things that need work in photoshop. I batch the RAW out to JPG, then do any detail work in PhotoShop. This is my wedding workflow, so quite high volume - 800 photos and one day turnaround time.

I wrote out my entire workflow recently but never posted it, I could if there's enough interest.

Yep both those shots are from my 20D with the eyepiece adaptor. It is a 130mm Diameter (650 focal) Newtonian reflector, Moon shot with 20mm eyepiece, Jupiter with the 10mm.

Hmmm wildlife, well it would be backwards and upsidedown, and at around 20kg all up, I don't think so. As for the A80, that would be a good match.

Found out a little about telescope vs 35mm SLR focal lengths, a telescope is the same equivilent focal length with a 50mm eyepiece, so a 25mm eyepiece is a 2x converter, I was using a 20mm for the moon, so that is 1625mm equiv in 35mm terms, the Jupiter shot was with the 10mm so that is 3250mm focal lenght 35mm equiv :D

Opps someone else was making conversation :o

Do you know what driver has the VXD error? Formatting the drive won't help the cause much. What sort of hardware is it, i.e, Motherboard (chipset), video card, modem and Network card (if there is one).

Issues like that are usually dodgy ill-supported hardware, a give away to video will be only being able to do 640x480 (800x600 if you are lucky) and 16 (sometimes 256) colours, I have often seem that error with internal modems too, but everything else will look fine if it is that.
