Bummer, I hate it when that happens. Almost as bad is the IRD taxing people on money they haven't earnt yet as just happened to me

I had another ethical delema that was solved today, we bought a HardDisk Recorder from Harvey Normans last year, 12 months interest free, defered payment etc... Hadn't heard anything from the finance company as we are due to start paying for it, I was begiining to think that it has been lost in the system as we had to return some cables we got with it, turns out it hadn't they just had our street address in the wrong suburb, so we never got the mail

Nice pic Aaron! Yes, like Tony/Weka I would like to know what effect those eyes would have looking directly at me... there's something in her expressions that makes you wonder what she was trying to implore...

Fine, here's another; eyes in the camera's general direction. I have none with her eyes looking directly into the lens.

Just an observation the first one is much better in that it dosnt have that 28mm distortion. I find the head and the feet wrong. I would sujest that you stay away from the Wide end of that lens.

This is why I have gone to primes for portrait as it forces me to get back.

I had pretty much the same thing. GE rang me and told me I had missed a payment and there was a $25 charge for doing so. I argued that I didn't get the bill and how was I supposed to know the due date. A couple of months later the same thing. I emailed them and told them I can't pay if I don't know when the due date is. They rang me to clear it up. Apparently any wrongly delivered mail gets returned to them (so they know EXACTLY how many bills you didn't recieve). They sit back and hope you'll get in touch with them. Upshot was they reversed the charges and double checked the address. Funny thing was that I only started missing my bills when I had to start paying!!

What are you having them clean, and how dirty is the camera? If it is the sensor have a chat with Duncan -- I think that he is the most experienced when it comes to cleaning the sensor. If it is just some dust on the sensor, a rocket blower should be good. So far (touch wood) the rocket blower has been strong enough to get the dust out.

Let me know if you don't have a rocket blower. You can borrow mine.

I have an Epson P2100 - 40Gb with a nice big screen on it. The card just plugs in and it takes CF as well as SD cards. It supports the formats from most of the Canon cameras - I haven't tried 5D RAW on it yet as their literature says it won't show thumbnails of that format - but it is fine in every other way.

Hmmm I will be back at them if I have any 'additional' charges

On the portable storage thing, I have an Vosonic X'S Drive VP3320 that replaced an older Vosonic X'S Drive II. It does what it does OK, forget the extra functions such as the MP3 player. Speed wisw it does a 1GB and verify in around 10 minutes which is quite quick for these units, has reasonable battery life too. Some work needed on the UI (the percent done is on a file basis not entire download) and a non easliy replaced battery is a pain (no point in carrying a spare). No review screen on it either just monocrome status.

From what I hear the Epson is the one to go for if you have the $$$

It cost me maybe $100 for a kit to clean my sensor that will last a year. $250 sounds waaaaaay too high to me, unless you've used it as a dinner bowl, or dropped it in the sand with no lens mounted.

I've got one, it was marketed under a couple of names but I know it as a "Tripper"
Basicly a laptop hard drive with a cardreader that either copies or moves files
from CF to the drive. really useful, but I found the internal battery pretty poor
(it's tiny so no suprise) I've since built an adapter so I can use a spare camera
battery to power it. for prices have a look at www.flashcards.co.nz
I got mine from Ausy - http://www.jaldigital.com.au/ the Tripper is obsolete now.

for $358 they replaced the IR filter itself - guess $250 sounds a bit high but
depends on how much time they spend really, does this include the lens?
I got the filter returned so if you want let me know & you can have a play with it
this applies to anyone else wanting to have a look at it.
(quite useful to see what you're dealing with)

I personally am a fan of the copperhill method, I've tried the sensor-swipes and
don't think they stay flat enough to be very useful.

Yeah Digitalmax have just gone to large print sizes and canvas prints. I may try them, however still expensive for NZ prints.

All my framed photos are digitalmax, but that was as I did $500 of half price prints...
I must have put in $1500 for prints and frames and matts etc.. And have $ value of maybe $3000-4000. Just have to get someone to buy them!!
I put the prices down on my 6x4" photos in a 6x8" matt.. Was $25, now $17.. Sold one the first day I changed it a week ago, but nothing since. Sales better pick up before end of the year, or at least get a wedding inquiry.

Thanks Warren. Yes, the gorillas did pass my mind when shooting the pics ;-)

$17?!?!? Aren't you under-selling yourself? The common agreement among us is that you have "the eye" for great pics... Something that (speaking for my self) I strive for each and everyday. I've heard Tony mention this too on a number of occassions.

Just my 2 cents worth: Could it be that CraftWorld is not the proper venue? Have a look at the photo blocks being sold by Lulu Designs of Paihia on TradeMe -- honestly, your pics have more impact (apologies if anyone here is Lulu Designs... but it is a fact... and not just because I personally know the work of Warren) Lulu designs manages to sell at least for $25 per pic... I think you have to re-consider this approach... if you don't mind my saying so.

Wazza
17th of July 2006 (Mon), 19:31
CraftWorld is a 6month contract.

Photo blocks are expensive to make, and not much mark up.
The 6x4" are 32 cents, plus $1 matt, $1 backing.. then 1 cent for plastic, and printing labels etc.. Costs like $3 each.

In over 2 months, I had yet to sell 1 6x4", and only sold 1 11x14 and a framed 11x14" 2 weeks back. I need to sell 2 per week just to break even, to cover the $135 a month rent. So really, I'm using all my personal money for this. :(

I know it will be better just before Christmas...
I've also put some frames up at Bergerac cafe for $65 each.. The common conception amongst response is pics should be cheaper, everyone has digital now, and if they can almost take a shot as good, why not display their own on the walls.

Wazza, if you want wedding business you have to advertise to get it. Have a great website with good wedding images, and make it a specialist website like www.warrenwilliamsweddingphotography.co.nz (or something easier to type), and consider putting an ad in a wedding magazine. A wedding mag will cost you around $1000 but you can claim back GST and your tax on that $1K, and one good wedding will more than cover the cost. NZ Bride & Groom has a deadline of the end of this month.

To be honest i'd pull craftworld as soon as you can. If you aim at the low end of the market you'll not make much money. And like someone said since so many people have digital cameras now you have to do something really special to get them to buy your work. Trademe sounds like a reasonable idea.

I can't afford $1000 for advertising like that. Have a Fiji trip to pay for, and buying some other gear before I can call myself prepared.

It's all money related. Can't do a better site with server, until I have money.. Can't move ahead without money, I just like to be comfortable at the moment, and heading in the right direction. Still, working in a studio, or an assistant photographer, or editorial photographer still would be fun. But can't push myself at the moment, when I already have too much on

Have you tried to get on board with a resturant to get them to display your images and offer them for sale? Great for places who ahve a lot of tourists. The wineries out your way might also work, especially those with cafe or resturant.

I have seen this done in several places, offering the place a cut may also help. We were at a place the other night, the photographer there had their web address up for more images as well.

Pete - the Vosonic looks pretty interesting, cheaper is better in this case! The VP6230 looks like the goods - I can plug it into the tv in the hotel and get an idea of if things are coming out properly. Multivoltage, so no worries there, I think I'm sold! :D

I've been using the VP6230 for a while now. Very pleased with it.

Still not sure on wedding work. I still have more enjoyment and less stress doing other forms of photography, if it comes to it, that I only do 10 weddings a year, that's fine.

When you're ready consider it an investment, not an expense. Any time you want to get experience doing wedding photos you're more than welcome to come along with me - though later this year will be better when I have a few in a row - maybe November. I'd even chip in for petrol and give you a sofa to sleep on.

If all you need is web space I can offer you some until you get yourself sorted. I can't help a lot with the design though - just find a site you like, change it around with your words and images, and put it up! Worked for me!

dg, love the mist photos and Piha (3) is stunning.

And I have a dilema people. Driving home from work on Sat morn, the fog was low, the sun coming up and there were some stunning photo oppotunites. I even had the camera in the car BUT I didn't stop, convincing myself I couldn't as it was too dangerous ( not a single car on the road at 07.30). I also convinced myself the 10D wouldn't be capable of capturing the light without 1600iso and noise. Another but...I'm thinking of updating the camera convincing myself (yet again) that if I had a better camera I would have stopped. I know I wouldn't!!! How can I justify a new camera without taking these photographic opportunites when I can.

Correct, I took it at indicators at 7am this morning. There was about 4 guys out. Thou shalt not use a telephoto lens and take away the foreground... however if I owned a telephoto for my Canon (and knew you surfed) I would have taken a few shots of the barrels to make you drool.

Ok is it always on the side that has the greater % if light?
It has to be flare, but whats causing it?
Has to be light. What about using the hood?

If it's not too wet out tonight I'll drag the 5D upstairs on to the roof and see if I can get the same effect.

Ah more Finance company woes, the debt collectors arrived to repo a whole lot of stuff, Shona was quite taken back she asked what and on behalf of who, they said three different HPs to three different companies well over $2000 grand worth and we had been warned, well we don't have that many HPs for starters, so she probed who it was they were looking for, some Chris guy she had never heard of, sorry doesn't live here, but that is not good enough for the repo guys their records show he lives here, in fact the last one was updated two weeks ago. It was then the penny dropped, our borders boy friends name was Chris, although we have never seen him (he is scared of me  ), a qiock phone call confimed it. Turns out he has been using our address for his HP's, now he does have a very real reason to fear me

Thanks John! Just back, and somewhat envious at all the photo-chat I'm missing, not to mention the local mini GKPE on the Manukau recently! I'm disappointed to be away for yet another outing, on 5th August. Can't believe the timing! Very impressed by the works of art you guys are posting. Some truly inspiring photos. Got to sit down and pp some of the shots I've taken of late....

Hey moppie you remember that 5D we played with in Hamilton? I wonder if it is the same one that The Fritz has?

I wonder if the guy in the camera shop told him is had been dropped ;)

Hmmm... Aren't tripod collars and international warranties a standard on the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG etc...? I am beginning to get worried about Mattoron's offer on TradeMe... Looks like I may have to take the $300 difference at Auckland Camera on the chin... bugger:( Unless the exchange rate to the US$ becomes favourable it looks cheaper to buy local...

Yep they are standard, caps collars, bag and warrenty. Check B&H

Good luck Fran! That lens is somewhere down my list... maybe the 5th one And after reading on Practical Photography (June 2006 issue) that the Sigma EX DC 10-20 won the 2006 TIPA awards I am getting this instead of the EFS 10-22 and put the savings into filters or a teleconverter. I've been sitting on the fence regarding my choice given the closeness of IQ...

Wow, a whole page dominated by moi... oops. Can someone tell me how to do that think when you answer lots of people in one reply (you know, add more that one quote from more than one person)

We know what you are trying to do. you just want to increase your post count. If you wish to beat Tim, you go to be on here 24x7

the only thing I can recommend is when you reply to a post and you include quotes, just cut and copy in to one big post. does that make sence.

I shouldn't think so, a dual core 3800+ with 1gb of ram and 1/2tb of hdd space. I see in one of the other posts about the app, somone has posted something I will try. It's holding down one of the keys when trying to start the app.

Well I will be buying the final version. I love the control over the colours
I guess the same is in CS2 just hidden.

. . . It's holding down one of the keys when trying to start the app.

That's a bit dodgy isn't it? You'd normally think that launching an app shouldn't need a "special key"

only way I know is to hit "quote" and copy the text out to notepad. Then hit Back on browser and hit "quote" on another post - copy this to notepad also.
Shuffle, edit, answer & post the whole lot when finished. There's probably easier ways but then what do I know? :)

When you reply, to do a quote, all you do is type
[qute=whoever-you-want-to-quote] blah blah this is my quoted text
but you need to spell quote right.

It makes it very easy to make a quote form someone. For example :

I like boys

So just copy and paste the text you want to quote, then wrap [qute=whoever] tags
around it.

Hi All

Well, my 70-200 F4 and teleconverter have arrived - YAY! Bring on the weekend - there is a motorbike meeting at Manfeild on Saturday, so might head over there, or if all else fails I will have to stalk the cats in the back yard

It is getting scary when the lenses come with instruction manuals though (ok, even if it is basic instructions) :o

Congrats on the new lens!
Sure will be a lot of fun, and you'll stand out in the crowd with the white lens.
