I normaly use charactor map, which can be found by going start/all programs/accessories/system tools/

I have uploaded my inline hockey pics to flickr and would prefer to put a reasonable quality pic on for the hockey members to order from, but I know most will just right click and save rather than pay (human nature) so I was thinking its probably best to put on a copyright notice or something semi transparent through the image to stop them doing this. I was hoping there was a simple program to do this as there are about 450 pics! dont want to do each one individually.

We know what you are trying to do. you just want to increase your post count. If you wish to beat Tim, you go to be on here 24x7

the only thing I can recommend is when you reply to a post and you include quotes, just cut and copy in to one big post. does that make sence.

Yeah that makes sense, however, I thought there may be a 'correct' method. I'll just do that for now.

Sweedishcarrot01
20th of July 2006 (Thu), 01:34
When you reply, to do a quote, all you do is type
[qute=whoever-you-want-to-quote] blah blah this is my quoted text
but you need to spell quote right.

It makes it very easy to make a quote form someone. For example :

So just copy and paste the text you want to quote, then wrap [qute=whoever] tags
around it.
Thanks Tony. I began getting bad vibes when he mentioned that the collar wasn't included. I'll check with Tasha5685 if she is able to supply the international warranty and complete set. That $350+ diff will make a difference and will be the deciding factor whether I can get a 2nd lens.

For my porpoises a 1.4xTC and 70-200 f2.8 is the ideal combination.
Bigma would give great range and flexibility and at that price is a steal but it's not the lens I want.

Sat: Bugger all.
Sun: Karting (1/2 an hour that way) or Motorcross inc classic mx (1 hr the other way).

I've got some slideshow video cd's and dvd's I've done to drop off at the karting so I have to go out there anyway...

I really want to go to the MX and it's not just because the steak sandwiches are the size of your head although that does come in to it :D

Weka, I told my missus she could have her holiday to the Sunshine Coast, she was so excited, we were out for lunch, it was a lovely day, she was very happy even when I told her I wanted a new camera...and she said 'why not'. No, I don't answer Australians... wait a minute, I am half of one, hmmm, actually, you do claim to be a Nzer, so, yeah, o.k.

Lens: 24-105 @ 45mm

Shutter: 0.5 sec

Aperture: f/11

I doubt you'll get the same effect in the evening, (colour wise that is) picture was taken at 7:31am.

Whats your local break?

Predictably, I couldn't get anything like the colour - and I am at work at that time in the morning - so I tried to get as close as possible to your parameters inside tonight (it's raining).

To get half a sec at F/11 I had the ISO set to 3200 on my 50mm prime and the only abnormality I could see on my pics were the dust spots on the sensor.

I then tried a range of ISO and f-stops at half a second with much the same results.

I noticed on one of your posted shots (I haven't checked the first one) you seem to be shooting with the camera set to aRGB. I set my camera to aRGB (and set Photoshop to process aRGB) and still couldn't see the same effect. Have you tried long exposures with the camera set to sRGB?

I them went looking back through my archives for long exposure shots with the 5D and found this one (Opera House at night (http://www.kiwi-in-oz.com/pictures/photos/biggest/IMG_0304.jpg)) which was 13 seconds at 200mm (full exif on the pic can be seen here (http://www.kiwi-in-oz.com/pictures/photo.php?photo=290)).

Sorry, but unless it is a picture style or the colourspace, I don't know what it could be.

The bigma for me dosnt cut it on the 5D. On the 20D it was perfect it was sharp and no light fall off. As there is nothing else out there I have to upgrade...bugger

Anyway whats $8K for a good 300-800mm lens, cheaper than Canon and its a zoom. Umm with a 2xTC that will give me 600-1600mm. Yeah baby size matters  . Now all I need is someone to lug it around with me.

I have had a second Idea and thats wazza's 120-300 F2.8. With 2xTC thats 240-600mm at F5.6 auto focus. I would need to have a play first.

I know when I borrowed Pete's 70-200F2.8 and added a 2xTC I got light fall off as well on the 5D. The Bigma was a tad sharper though at 400mm

::John::
20th of July 2006 (Thu), 05:34
Tony, I get a huge amount of light falloff on the Sigma 24-70 in some conditions. Some shots I like the effect and leave it - other shots I use CS2 to get rid of it through the Lens correction plug-in.

I get it, to a lesser extent, with the Canon 100-400, too.

I usually shoot in SRGB, but have only just switched to ARGB (somebody mentioned that it may make a difference to the sharpness, so am giving it a try). I have previously posted some long exposures on here that were shot in SRGB.

It would be interesting to see what it is like on the Canon 2x as it was designed to be paired with that lens. I know it is OK at 1.6x crop, not sure at full frame then the combo has been around for longer than most DSLR's.

You know what. Totally forget the first reply I gave you (and the second for that matter).

For some reason (actually, no reason) I thought your questions where about that second surf shot I posted, silly me. (must be that half Australian side in me coming out)

The star streak image was taken in ARGB. I have also posted one earlier that I took in SRGB, it was also the same kinda shutter speed of 15 minutes.

The Aperture was f/4 not f/11.

That will also explain why I asked about your nearest break.

The red is coming from the operation light and is only ever in the middle of the right hand side of the frame. It only occures on long exposures such as, 5,10,15 mins etc.

Do you own a 5D also?

I once owned a 20D and a sigma 10-20. Never used it much "why would I ever need ultra wide angle"? So I happly sold it lost $100 but so what.
Went to a 5D and my 24-70 became my main wide angle. Then 1 day wazza lent me his 17-40. Well that was it. What changed. I had a NEED for UWA for my waterfalls.

Now I use it all the time and the 24-70 collects dust. I fact I should sell it. (be a nice lens for Scott go well with his 70-200)

Moral of this is simple dont buy what you dont need.

On-call Sat night so may be too tired but might go anyway. I'm thinking of asking around if anyone would be interested in buying cheap-ish piccies. Waddya reckon?
At the moment it's for the hell of it and practice but that may change :D

I made 4 copies of a video cd slideshow from one race and dropped them off at the clubhouse and a few people have called expressing interest.
I've done up a couple of 8x12 shots from the Secondary Schools Champs and think that if they see them they'll see that 320x240 on the video cd that they thought was great isn't really that good and it may pique their interest some more :D

The 8x12's cost $8 from DigitalMax and the 8x10's are $6.
The bugger is that I crop my shots to fit the scene and not to fit 4:3.

Oh well, It's all learning.

Hmmmm, wonder if I should attempt a collage of a driver?

So when do you want the lens Tony?

You should do your own version of sharpness tests
5D + Bigma at 120mm, 200mm, 300mm F8
5D + 120-300 , same focal ranges..

Then 240-600mm with 2x converter.

Lens should be free on Sundays, as I'm working. Fridays and Saturdays it stays with me,

Also as anyone knows, those responsible, have the money, you wouldn't borrow a 20D without having the means to buy a replacement, or have it repaired very quickly...

Did you ever use the 17-40?, so you borrwed it for a few weeks in December/January when my lens wasn't working? And also more recently when you dropped it off to Kirsts?
Now a 120-300...
I never did borrow that Bigma of yours, however I have something decent enough now.
Kirst doesn't though ;)
Either a Bigma for her in the future, of a 70-200 F2.8 Sigma.

The 17-40 over Dec/Jan didnt get used as Duncan lent me his 16-35.

A possible, would be to go to the zoo tomorrow afternoon if it's free. Either to drop off the lens, or spend sometime there myself. Would have to speak to Kirst, as to what she would like to do. We haven't had a decent weekend/day together for along time. Last weekend, was at the D1NZ, and she was sick...

And one day at my convenience, and yours of course, I'd like to borrow the Bigma, see if Kirsts likes it, and also the 2x converter...

Could meet you before you start work on sunday what time do you start. Then give back after work. Saves me driving all the way up north :)

Its now costing me $1.91 a ltr (96) I think I should buy a horse, double up as lawn mower.

As far as a test between the 120-300 and the bigma I know what will be the sharpest even with a 2xTC. Its the light fall off that im intrested in.

Is the Bigma not that sharp at all?

On the 20D its sharp because of the crop. On FF I find it so so. Mind you I guess Im am expecting more with the 5D.

17-40mm F4 70-200mm F4 50mm F1.4 85mm F1.8 is my canon line up so they are not "cheap" lens. I dont do cheap any more. All my canon glass is sharp. Now I just need to sharpen up my Sigma's

The cheapest option for me re Ultra telephoto is to buy a 30D. I wouldnt need to upgrade the bigma at all. Wouldnt have any light fall off either which is the thing that bugs me no end.

Here is the Maths (rough prices)

30D $2100
Sigma 120-300 $3500
Sigma 300-800 $8500

The big issues with the 2 sigmas is weight and cost. The advantage with the 30D is cost and having a second body.

I'll attach one that I took of fairfield bridge at around 12:30am... perhaps we could do that again sometime. Great, that's real sweet toe knee.

Who are you doing the shoot for?

A woman doctor (GP) Samoan, in fact every photoshoot Ive got lined up are all Samoans. Which works for me as that way I get known in my community.

I thought the beach would be good because of all the earthy colours. Down the far end of Karekare beach is a couple of old logs which is a good spot for sitting, walking a long the beach and there is an old building with just the beams left. I havnt worked out which waterfall will be best.

Im going to use my 85mm and 70-200 as the main lens. Natural light.

Im not 100% happy with studio lights yet. I also hope they come out well and that she will be happy and allow me to use a couple in a portfilo which will then help encouraging more to have their photo done. Which will give me more experence.

I enjoy woman and I love photographing them. So this will be a test to see if I am willing to follow another dream, also to see if I have what it takes. Hey whats the worst thing that could happen.... the photos could come out like crap and I go back to shooting sunsets. But what if....... What if they come out really well and it all comes togather.

She is alos looking at getting into photography so I said I would help her get a DSLR as she has a film Canon SLR.

Yeah, that old building is real nice, when the sun gets low it warms up to a nice colour.

If the photo's do turn out bad, don't just revert back to sunsets, learn from your mistakes and improve for next time.

If you walk almost to the water and then cross over the creek, up the beach a bit (kinda behind the cliff) is a nice sand bank with tussock, however, the sun dissapers around the point too early to get low enough to warm that up. However, if you go back in the summer, the sun sets farther round and that bank looks right-nice.

Well I see,
In Mangere
That'd be the place to be
There lives Tony and his wife - a 'she'.
A place where rates are as low as can be
Which is how in turn, you got a 5D.

So to the beach you'll go when the sun is low and glistening
To take photographs of a lady, who practises general practitioning
Her clients I am sure are addicted to nicotene
And as oft' as she tells them, they just aren't plain listening

However, the shoot will go well
All her friends she will tell
How Tony the profession-al
Took shots that made her go WAOW
Her friends will soon give you a 'bell'
Resulting in many pics you will sell

Has GKPE got a resident Poet Lauret?

Well that all depends on how you score it
Just cause it rhyms, does that make me laureate?
Or could it just be, different to that of Miss Muffet
Of whome you hate and want her life expired?
And cause you like my line - you call me poet?

Hmm, one does wonder what she did to you
She's not real you know - just like Winnie the Pooh
It's only a book that is read in the loo
Although at times I do wish, such stories were true
But I'm only a dreamer who likes a good feud

A feud at times can help me cope
It's my only release - seen as I don't smoke dope
You'll have to bear with me and have a toke
Of my poetry forms that is - not that thick smoke
Of which I must say, I will never promote
Cause it's really quite lame - much like the olden day word 'elope'
Don't laugh to hard that your pants get soaked
Anyways - we all like a good anecdote

Scott no cameras allowed :(

John I thought about the reflector but there is no way to hold it without an assistant. I want to keep the whole thing very simple. The thing I will need to watch is the light on the face. I looked through the photos I did of Sandra at the same spot. Many of the photos she was squinting because of the light.

Also there are skin colour differences and Sandra has fair skin which blew out very easy.

There are some nice areas for waterfall shots but I dont know how happy she will be climbing over rocks and bush to get to them, add to that going through cold water.

I get about 100 RAW photos per 2gig cf card and I have 1 card. May take my laptop to download. Will need to get another CF card soon. I think I will also try to tripod most of the shots where I can.

I feel I have enough knowledge and experence at Karekare to get it right (light wise) I guess thats why I chose the place as I feel comfortable there.

Good stuff on the shoot Tony..

Remember composition rules...
Have them standing to the side slightly, looking into the empty space side, and don't have objects in the background intercepting with face lines etc.. It's a big 3D world, and you have to capture that into the photo.

Off out with Kirst now..

Wazza when do you need it back by? Does iKirst want to play with bigma?

Has anyone used the CANON EP-EX15 eye piece extender? Comments? I am thinking of getting this since I tend to fog up or get condensation on my camera buttons and am worried that the water will manage to find its way into the system...

I guess dreams need to be tested to see how serious you are.

Reminds me of my first IT job I got, after knocking on doors for 4 years I got a job in a retail company fixing PC's. Got the Job on the Thursday ment to start on the Saterday and got a phone call on Friday saying the company had gone belly up.

I have a dream and I will not give up:p

Pete, is there a step by step tutorial somewhere -- that black hole thing sounds interesting.

Someone on TradeMe is selling those light tents for product photography. These tents have interchangeable backgrounds... but cost heaps....

You can make your own tent quite easily, did have one for a while as I was doing a lot of product shooting.

Anyway, the black hole, here is a quick sketch I did showing what it is. Basically it is a box made out of black cardboard with an opening at the front, you can vary the overall size for what ever purpose you are using it for. The one I used was for jewellery so it was aroud 300mm high. You place the subject in front of the hole, due to the fact it is black inside, very little light gets in and the cameras limited dynamic range actually being useful for a change, the background appears completely black, even if you run levels on it there is no detail.

The reason it has a snout shape to it is to allow you to back light the subject from either side without the lights being in the frame.

Please excuse the rough sketch, but I hope you get the point:

I do, starting with 300D. Wouldn't be without it. Little condensation, snot or other body fluids on the display. It also permits a tighter fit of the eyepiece to the eye socket. In fact, I use a rubber eyepiece on it to cut out stray light. Very helpful when a bright light/ sun is to one side. Easier to check/manual focus and see what is actually in frame, before shutter-release. And at events where you need to use the left eye to monitor developments off-frame, it provides a better clearance view.

I bought several extender and rubber eyecups for about US$11 each. These things get lost!

BTW: three days ago we went to Mahurangi West Park. In one of the shots I've made there were some tiny birds on an electric cable (they were not the main target of the picture). I think I've never seen them before. Do you recognize them? Their look is so scary! ;)

I had been playing around with photoshop, in hopes of improving my post processing.

what do you guys think of this ?

http://www.cuthbert.net.nz/potn/raglan2006.jpg

I have also change the picture on my front page. I am still working on this image but what you see is what I am trying to go for. The image itself is the background. I have just stopped it being titled and moved in the left hand corner. Just finding the right image seems to be hard.

it seems that everyone else has managed to get the camera out this weekend. and from what I can see some good results.

Took this at Meriwai beach today.

Black and White with green filter.

Post processed the 'purple' effect and added a splash of contrast.

Love it or hate it, I don't care. After all, it's a tree and a bit of grass. :)
But seriously, does it work or is it just too random?

f/5.6
1/15 sec handheld

Oh NZfritz, my wife had a good laugh over your wife photo and my responce. I cant believe I didnt know her

Wazza here's the plan Sigma 120-300 + Canon 70-200 + Bigma 50-500 @ 200mm. Then with 1.4 TC and then with 2xTC.

Will also do some with the TC's on the other 2 but not the bigma. I will do from F5.6-F16.

Any thing you are looking for , I want to look at the vignetting side of things.

I guess we should try to get hold of a Canon 100-400. umm who has one of those

Wazza I had a quick play this morning. Light fall off at 300mm F8. However it takes a 2xTC very well. Dam its heavy hand held, dont even think of it with a 2xTC @600mm

Will do some proper tests later with tripod.

I wonder if it Sigmas and Full frame with light fall off. I only get it with Tele's on the long end.

Aaron, not bad! The texture and patterns give it some character. I do find the grass slightly disturbing though... The tree bark (without the grass) would have probably made a stronger impact... Abstract, yet discernible.

Make an appointment with her and...

Actually, I was thinking of that too...

I was am going to go aganst the flow here here and say it doesn't look that interesting. I find the grass to be distracting and the picture a bit flat lighting wise.

As for the random part, that's apart of being abstract.

So Tony now that you have all these lens to test are you going to write up a web page with pictures?

NZfritz what is the longest focal length you have? Do you get light fall off with any of your lens?
