If my memory serves me correctly, I think Fritz has only got the one lens, the 24-105 F4 L
EDIT: I also figured I can' t take photos to save myself. :)
Its like anything in life some things come naturaly others you have to work at.
Ive been at my current Job for 4.5years and people are saying im getting a bit more diplomatic. My favorite saying is still "NO"

I had been playing around with photoshop, in hopes of improving my post processing.
what do you guys think of this ?
I have also change the picture on my front page. I am still working on this image but what you see is what I am trying to go for. The image itself is the background. I have just stopped it being titled and moved in the left hand corner. Just finding the right image seems to be hard.
it seems that everyone else has managed to get the camera out this weekend. and from what I can see some good results.
Mark, I find the image a little bright. I thought of having a play but you don't have "Image Editing Ok" up. I will have a play if you will allow me to;-)

Just off the phone with Canon NZ re the battery grip I sent for "repairs."
They want me to return the original battery tray for disposal???, PLUS, send them my camera body for "adjustments" to address the the low battery "glitch" :( Seems like they are sending me a new grip but want to make sure that the camera is in sync...
Oh well, I might as well get it over and done with... after GKPE IV that is:D

Hell my cameras never get old enough as they are sold in the first year  .
I wonder if a 1Dn 1.3 crop will solve all my light fall off issues. Mind you its the same price as my Sigmonster and I dont think Sandra will let me have both:rolleyes:

Sounds as though your Grip and the 20D were in the batches which were in "recalls" to fix known problems, widely and angrily publicised a year ago. Perhaps they are modifying the battery tray and using it as a reconditioned service part.
Hope their turn-around is much improved!

you can have a play if wish. the main reason why I didn't have that enabled. I had some people play with some of my pictures and they looked like crap.
Funny, I also posted that picture in Critique Corner and no great comments there either. However when I show it to non photograhers I get good comments.

I've also got the 20D/Grip flexxing issue.
Grip is bought in USA, and 20D is beyond the 12 month warranty, although shutter is warranted for another 5 months ;)
I've tied some rope between the bottom of grip and top of camera. So far has worked well.

Mark, I guess photographers are more critical compared to the lay-person when it comes to photos. I've got quite a few that my wife found very good but not good enough with photogs.
Here's the pic -- warmed up and saturated. Not sure if this was the effect you were after. Cheers!

Warren, you might want to send it in -- the adjustments, from what I'm told are part of Canon's programme to set things right. Mind you, my grip didn't come with a warranty and they are fixing it. So far they haven't quoted me anything... I specifically asked them to let me know how much it would cost before they started working on it...

Clive, I understand that the problem was with those grips with serial numbers 100K and below. Mine is 135K+ and still the problem exists. I agree that this also has something to do with the settings/firmware on certain 20Ds

Why do weird things happen to me
Started testing the 120-300 on the 5D
test 1 300mm from F2.8-F16 Autofocus No problems
test 2 300mm 1.4TC F4- F16 Autofocus No problems
test 3 300mm 2xTC F5.6-F16 Autofocus No problems
now this is where it gets interesting
test4 300mm 1.4 TC + 2.0 TC F4...... Autofocus No problems why am I getting autofocus with a 1.4 and 2x TC attached. The exif info is reading as if it has the 1.4 TC alone but here is the pictures
first one is NO TC second 2xTC
weka2000
24th of July 2006 (Mon), 00:22
Now here are the other 2
The first one is F4 with 1.4TC the second is F4 with the 1.4 TC and the 2xTC togather
Also seems to work with my Canon 70-200F4 :)
dgcorner
24th of July 2006 (Mon), 00:27
I didn't know you could combine TCs... Well, as my sig says... learning something new each day ;-)
So, where did you purchase your TCs from? Does a 2X get more use than a 1.4?
weka2000
24th of July 2006 (Mon), 00:40
Yes you can combine but autofocus should NOT work.
I borrowed wazzaz 1.4TC and Sigma 120-300.
How the hang does it work??? sure it hunts a bit but it dosnt make sence.
The kenko pro300 conects to the 5D the 1.4 TC to the lens. Go figure.
Oh spoke to canon tech today re light fall off, they find it odd that its happening on telephoto. The know sigma wide and canon has a light fall off issue.
theflyingkiwi
24th of July 2006 (Mon), 02:05
At what point does the 5D lose auto focus? I know that the 10D/20D and the 30D have issues where it loses autofocus at F8. From my understanding this is because it's not enought light hitting the autofocus sensor for it to work. And there ways to confuse the camera to think that it's not F8.
It was also my understanding that the 1series cameras are different, and because they are better in low light they can still retain autofocus at F8. So the question is where does the 5D fit in?
weka2000
24th of July 2006 (Mon), 02:13
F5.6 should be the max. So a F2.8 will take a 2xTC and retain autofocus and a F4 will take a 1.4 and retain autofocus
theflyingkiwi
24th of July 2006 (Mon), 02:39
I did find this comment on a web page "However, on the ID mark two and other Pro bodies, autofocus is retained to f8, but is retricted to the centre autofocus point only" The 5D is a pro camera and that is what may be happening here.

If that been the case why did the bigma not autofocus with the 1.4 TC =F8 or the Canon F4 with 2xTC?

How do you keep yourselves informed on how our Canon DSLRs actually work? How do we co-operate with, and work around, the various issues?
Simple - subscribe to the quarterly UK magazine "EOS magazine" (http://www.eos-magazine.com).
It is a gold-mine of information relating precisely to the tools we own. Like the July-September 2006 issue which has several pages from p52 on "Extenders at f8".
"Extenders have a protruding front element that will not fit into the rear of many EF lenses." Table on p55.
"On most cameras. autofocus stops stops when the maximum effective aperture drops below f5.6." "There are some EOS models ... down to f8. Details next page.
Autofocus speed is reduced.
A very useful section on AF sensor structure and functioning leads to "some later models allow autofocusing with a maximum aperture of f8, though only with the centre focusing point." A cross-type.
All DSLRs except EOS 1 series lack the central point vertical line sensor to operate... f8.
Autofocus Availability - a table with lenses, extenders and f5.6/f8 lenses.
There is a panel on "Cheating the system". "Possible to get autofocus to work when using an extender, lens and camera combination that will not normally autofocus." This involves disabling the coding that tells the camera which extenders are attached.
Of course, if one buys non-Canon, then... stop complaining.

I work with tech the same way regardless of what it is. I come up with my own way that everything should work then hate it when I don't understand what it's doing and then if that doesn't work swear at it so it understand where I come from and that it's the one that needs to change. :)

Cheaper, hell I want the best or another body for the bigma as it looked better on a cropped camera. The 5D shows me why the 120-300 is twice the price as the bigma.

Tony
We ran some tests with my 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 Canon lens this past weekend on my 5D and PaulGolf5's 20D
Pauls Canon 2x teleconverter
My Sigma 2x and 1.4x teleconverters
We lost autofocus at 400mm as soon as we put the 1.4x on
So we mucked around after that - manual focussing and stacking teleconverters.
It was interesting to have the lens at 400mm with the two 2x AND the 1.4x on but you really need a good tripod, no air movement, high ISO and a steady focus hand to get anything - and mirror lockup and the remote to actually try to get a decent pic - we failed on that one :)

The autofocus should not be working with both T's on but it does. It hunts like crazy but when it locks that is it. Icannot explain it and it does it with 2 different lens. It seems to be buy passing the 2xtc and its almost like it dosnt exist. The exif info is the same for both shots but the photo shows its bigger than the others.

I think, in your case, the Kenko is making the difference. Posts I have read on this forum have mentioned that the Kenko 'pretends' it isn't there and the autofocus still works - it's like blocking the 3 pins out on other teleconverters.
In my case, I was starting with a f/5.6 lens - the first teleconverter (the 1.4) already took me past the auto-focus limits so, at that point, we decided to just muck around.
The hunting is 'normal' (read not unexpected). User CDS has posted how he used the 'mask 3 pin trick' on a 100-400 lens and, because of the hunting, burnt out the AF motor in the lens - so be careful.
Do a search in here for TC's and the masking of 3 pins on 100-400 lenses - it was a fairly recent post.
Oh, and good luck - I will be looking out for a Kenko TC - there is a dealer in Canberra who stocks them - I may have to give him a call.

As for the random part, that's apart of being abstract.
So Tony now that you have all these lens to test are you going to write up a web page with pictures?

Yes I dont want to stuff any lens. It will be fine on the bigma due to manual focus only...cool new focal length of 1400mm. Now longer than Canons 1200mm F5.6

NZfritz what is the longest focal length you have? Do you get light fall off with any of your lens?
nzi I speaks truth concerning the matter. Alas, a lone 24-105 is all that I behold. (for my Canon anyways)
I get light fall off when the lens is wide open... I posted an email that Canon sent me on this subject a while back. I can forward you a copy if you wish. Seems as though it's a 'given' with zoom lenses.

I had a word to them today. They thought it odd that I only get it on telephoto. I have never seen it anything under 200mm. Its always on the long end of a tele.

Just thought I would let ya know something, when I got my sigma 1.4x, I tested with the 100macro and on the 10D the thing hunts big time. Even on a subject with good contrasts. I don't have a canon 1.4x do I don't know if that will also do it.

Way SHARPER. In fact Im going out of the goodness of my heart swap with wazza so he gets an extra 200mm, I will keep his 120-300 and he can have the bigma
Thanks for the complament. Yes they are getting better, about time.
I still maintain that the bigma is perfect for 1.6 cameras.

As for AF, as mentioned already, F5.6 on a 1.6x crop, and F8 on a 1 series, 1DS or 1D body. But never knew about a 5D.

I found the answer to the 2 TC and autofocus. Has to do with the pins on the kenko. Wont be doing it any more as the excessive hunting can burn out the lens motor
Would I buy a 120-300??? Well in short no. I think its a sports lens as much as the 1Dn is a sports camera in my mind.
PS 5D autofocus F5.6 not F8
My 70-200 is just as sharp as the sigma. The Sigmonster is the lens I want. Its sharper than the bigma and has a longer focal length. I have found the weight of the Sigma 120-300 a good exercise in how heavey lens can get.

Maybe I should list mine for several thousand $$..
I was going to sell mine, and just use my 17-40L, for when I upgrade to a 1DIII. However I heard the 10-20 works great on a 1.3 crop body, and works down to 11-13mm

Iv been dreaming, hopeing to make it a reality in October.
Priced from the Auckland Camera website:
30D body only
Sigma 17-70
Sigma 70-300 macro (its cheap, but it'll do).
Sigma 500 flash
Total: $3663
Im sure they can negotiate on that, Ill add some UV filters as well of course, if they take enough off a 1gb card, otherwise Ill get one on trademe.
Then all I need is a good tripod.
All in all the goal is spending no more than $4,000 and having a good set up by x-mass :)
So far Im over halfway there, I could go and buy a body tomorrow, but I wouldn't have anything to put on it :p

Moppie -- if you do decide to get the body first you can borrow the 50mm f/1.8 till you get your lenses -- it is collecting dust as the 24-70 or the 28-105 is on the camera most times.

With each new body, prices keep reducing at RRP.
20D came out at $3399 or so, and quickly reduced to $3000 or less
the 30D has come out at $2500 just about everywhere, pretty much the same price as the 20D was selling when it became obsolete.
The 1DS originally was around $17,000
The Mk II came out at about $14,000 and is now at around $11-12,000
The 1D 4 megapixel, was first very expensive
The 1DII came out at around $9000 before slowly reducing to around $6999 and $6800 at Auckland Camera.. The 1DIIN, updated version came out at exactly the same price...
So logically, the next camera shouldn't be anymore expensive. ;)

I used them to buy my 10D (and yes the 20D came out two weeks later at the price the 10D was) and they are very good and very efficient. Wendy is very pleasant and even promised to price match for me as the camera was cheaper at P&V. I would like to disprove that (more than likey proven wrong again :) ) it's like the builders saying about the titanic, yea it wont sink, but we haven't tested but we right anyway.
but in all seriousness I would like to see differences between the sigma 120-300, the canon 100-400 and what I have got. It would be interesting just to see.
perhaps we would be the first group of people to provide a visual test between the 3.
just looking on FM reviews, it's interesting to see the score of each lens.
sigma 120-300 gets 9.3 out of 49 reviews
sigma 100-300 gets 9.5 out of 47 reviews
canon 100-400 gets 9.0 out of 110 reviews

100-300 is definately a fine lens.. It's in a high price range for a non IS, F4 lens.. So the quality has to be great, which it is.
The 120-300 has a few negative points from the weight of the lens.. And the older non DG version not having the TS-41 tripod collar

Actualy as tempting as a 24-70 is, I don't know if it will be wide enough, altough constant f2.8 would be nice, I think the 38mm equivilant on a 30D would annoy me to much. I have 35mm equivilant with my A80, and Im always wishing it was just a little bit wider.
With a 17-70 I get 27.2-100 and something, which is much closer to what I need. Although I will have to live with F4.5 at the long end, and only get F2.8 at the short end.
Its also lighter, and there is a limit to how much weight a Hobbit with a bad neck can carry :)

Most the Sigma lens, including 120-300 and 300-800 were released same time, around November 2003 I think it was... Aimed at the 1.3/1.6x crop, and nikon 1.5 and 2.0x crop..

It's simple economics for a third party lens maker like Sigma. Probably 95% of their market use 1.5, 1.6 or greater crop cameras, so what are they going to optimise most lenses for?
A very small % of lens buyers have full frame cameras and they are much less likely to be the budget consious people that will consider a third party lens.
The main thing that would put me off buying a full frame camera is not so much the cost of the camera, but the cost of new lenses to do it justice.

If anyone needs any form of commercial vinyl, flooring accessories, adhesives, polyurathenes, epoxies, resin floorings, roofing membranes, building waterproofing, spray cladding, ice and snow guards and wot-not, I'm a one stop shop! (although, I know crap all about what I'm selling at the moment :o )
Hows the camera folks of NZ going? I haven't had much chance to pick up a camera in ages, last attempt was D1NZ round 2... that was forever and a day ago. My pics turned out ok, sold one I think.
Anyhoo, be cool to each other :D

My understanding is:
1D = 4Mp 1.3 crop
1Ds = 11Mp FF
1D Mk2 = 8.2Mp 1.3 crop
1D Mk2N = 8.2Mp 1.3 crop + bigger screen & a few other bits and bobs
1Ds Mk2 = 16.8Mp FF

Hey, is everything all right with Telecom ADSL lines? Since this afternoon every oversea website (including this one) is soooo slow! :/
Have you noticed it?

I don't think it would suit my shooting style. I want something wider that overlaps with my 10-20. Doesn't matter, I need to get my spending under control, so no lenses for a while.

It is your typical Telecom glitch -- slows everything to a crawl... I actually thought that I had a virus because of the slowdown...

Mexican Navy's in town... Wazza, if you're working tomorrow it might make a good sunset time photo. I'll see if I can remember to take my camera in & have another go at it if it's still there.
