Yay! I've finally got my 20D sensor-cleaning-problem body back from Canon. And it cost only $358.54 for the privalige. AND they managed to find the bugger'd filter to give me back!
Cool! What does the damage look like close up?

Ouch! That's a pretty expensive way to learn how not to... then again, it could have been worse. Let me guess: Canon part: $45.00; Labour/Incidentals: $273.70; GST $39.84. :)
Did they tell you how much it cost to get a sensor cleaned? I want to have an idea just in case...

Close, but no cigar. (excellant maths for the GST though!)
Low pass filter = $153.70 (Our parts guy at work could get it for USD$80 )
Labour 1.5 hrs = $165.00
G.S.T. = 39.84
Total = 358.54

I hate to break the bad news to you, but the 6.5Mbs you are getting is the line speed, which can go up to 8Mbs depending on conditions. You will be being throttled at the ISP end back to the rate you are paying for :(
If you have a Bitstream service (based on ADSL from the likes of Orcon), the link is rate limited as well.
This is unless you still have fill tilt JetStream, which if you do I suggest you cancel and use the spare cash to by a fast red Italian sports car. Telecom no longer offer full Jetstream.

I knew there was a catch.
Iv had the same jetsteam plan for some time, and all I really know is the cost has never gone down, but Iv had about 4 months of free service thanks to errors by telecom, and credits from moving, which means I qualified for a free modem, which I didn't want or need.

I run a very useful app called PRTG ( http://www.paessler.com/prtg )to graph usage in&out of my router so can quickly see what speed is being reached. Only problem is the monthly stats don't match Ihug's now their month end is anniversary of join date (in my case 25th) their earlier version trial app is fully useable for one interface (as in what I monitor...)

What? don't say that! That pic is so good that it couldn't possibly have been taken with anything but a Canon DSLR, at least a 20D. Because everyone knows you can't take reaaly good pictures with a 300D, 350D, or especially one of those point and shoot things like Moppie uses. To be honest I have been too busy trying to buy a car.....I started out looking at sub $10K cars, then Pete said something that got me looking at new cars. First a $24K car, but then for a few K more you can get this, and a few K more gets you this, so now I'm up to $30K which is scarey!!!! I have never even considered buying a brand new car before! So today i need to take a step back and rethink. Spending that sort of money on a car would really cramp my photographic spending (And here you all were wondering what this post has to do with photography!) I'm just sick of having cars that break!

Uh, my 2 cents worth on Korean cars... unless they have one of those wall to wall cover guarantees for at least 100+thou kms don't touch them.
The Jap cars are far more reliable and last far longer than the Korean ones. A good testing ground would have been in Manila where Korean suspensions gave way only after around 2 years whilst the Japanese cars were made to last at least 5 years+... and the roads of Manila are terrible.
This just means that a Korean car may last 5 years here... the Jap cars will last longer than 10. But having said that, Jap parts are designed to breakdown after 4-5 years use mainly because the Japanese change cars within that period. On Toyotas the water pump is always the first to bite the dust.

Btw, the comparison to petrol drinking was amongst the 4 cylinder ones...
FWIW, my last Maxima (3.0 litre V6) was more economical than Tina's (my wife) 2.0 Subaru Legacy SW... I was getting between 8-12 kilometers to a liter with the Nissan, and Tina was getting 6-7 kms to a litre... Could be because the Subaru is an all time 4WD and has turbo?

Yep, I think we have a winner, Scott and I are trying to do a "two for one" deal with the guys at Newmarket Nissan, a pair of 3 year old Primeras
I have been looking at TCO of the 3 yr old Primera versus a brand new Mazda3. It is looking good for the Mazda. 3 year warranty, 3 years free scheduled servicing and with the deal they are doing (finishes tommorrow of course) the upfront cost is not much different. The Primera is a bit bigger, but for the same spec car the price is only $2K difference. Factor in the scheduled servicing and the difference is less.
Now the Primera we were looking at only has 4000 Km on the clock and it is true that we could get one with 30000 for $2-3K less but the extra 26000Km is about 1.5 years of driving....I figure 1.5 years driving is worth the extra $2K. Based on Pete's experience today, there is very little discount available on the used Primera.
I am leaning heavily towards buying the brand new Mazda3. I have it home for the night, and need to make a decision if I want to take advantage of the February special. (All the car dealerships we went to had february specials, aparently they have a monthly target of cars to sell, and the target does not change to account for there only being 28 days in feb, which makes feb the best month to buy a new car as the car companies are falling over themselves to sell the required number of cars in the shorter time!)
I have never even considered a new car before, so this would be a big shift in thinking for me! Some sacrafices would need to be made to fund this, not least of which would be photographic toys!
On the positive side, it is our 10th anniversary this year, which is traditionally marked by a tin or aluminium gift. There is lots of aluminium in a new Mazda3!

Good luck with the "test." The fact that they have given you a bonus, are letting you into the more sensitive parts of the company means that your brownie points have reached the point where they 1) cannot afford to lose you (well, at least for the next 12 months...); 2) they are comfortable to let you into the inner workings; and 3) they don't suspect that you are actually Austin Powers in disguise... :D:D :D

If it means anything, the NZ Herald people have told me that car sales are really slow these days mainly because of the higher interest rates. The regular advertisers (dealers) have been complaining to the paper that they are squeezed so much that margins are no longer something to smile about. They (the dealers) need to throw in more enticements to get people to buy.... and sometimes these enticements are not enough... and they throw in more just to get the sale.
Try to squeeze in more like car mats, an emergency kit (jumpers, tow rope, etc.) AA or equivalent emergency service, tow bar, wheel upgrade (though a long shot) etc. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
Happy anniversary (whenever it is!) I promised Tina that I would take her out of the country on our 10th anniversary -- and I made true to that promise... I took her to NZ permanently :D :D I wonder what I'm suppossed to do in 5 years when we celebrate our 20th...?

No worries,
I remember now!
And yes, I remember getting a laugh out of it.
I used to have really problems with the camera crews parking their cars where ever they liked. They were a rather arogant bunch, good to them being made fools of, even if its only in the herald.
Pete, what happened to your brownie?

Yes, I have really noticed that. Big discounts, free this, super finance deal that (Although no where near what I can get through the bank!) There does not seem to be the same sort of motivation to sell second hand cars as there is for new ones, which is what for me, has made the new car so appealing. I have already negotiated 15% off the RRP + a set of mats into the deal. I tried for a tow bar but had no luck. I'm going to go for a set of weatherguards for the windows and maybe scotchgaurdsing the interior if I decide to go ahead.
Hmmmm....might have to do a car photo day.....

decided I needed motivation so thought I would try something I have wanted to do for ages.
the plan: flash + long exposure time + subject move + second flash.
What I did: set up my little New Jersy devils bear on his favorite seat, set long exposure ans force flash. press shutter and move subject to next position, activate 2nd flash (old flash from pentax film camera), hope for the best.
the result:
http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL348/944371/1745642/131212099.jpg
not quite what I was after but with playing around I think (hope) I can get it better.
kind of gives a ghostly effect to the whole image, would have liked the seated bear to be more solid though

OK people, I'm keen to get some other people point of view. I have a 1993 Subaru Legacy Station Wagon with 170000Km I'm going to put on Trademe. Trouble is, I don't know where to set my start and reserve price, and am I being too honest with my description?
This could be a great car again with a little bit of time and money spent on it but is for sale AS IS, WHERE IS.
What you should know about this car:
The passenger side turbo was replaced with a brand new one less than 5000km/six months ago. The cambelt was replaced at this time as well.
The driver side turbo is now leaking oil and burning it, so it blows a lot of smoke. I have been quoted $1000 to replace this with a used unit. It cost me $3000 to replace the other turbo with a new one so presumably it would be about that again for a new unit.
In the course of diagnosing where the smoke is coming from, my mechanic pressure tested the head gasket and found it to be fine.
The car does run (we drove it to the mechanic and back) but burns a lot of oil and blows a lot of smoke!
The drivers door has got a dent in it (see picture).
The rear driver side panel (behind the back wheel, above the bumper) also has a dent in it. (Both dents caused by my mother in-law backing into it on 2 separate occasions!!!!)
The interior could do with a good clean with a rug doctor, but is in generally good condition.
The car does not currently have a warrant of fitness, and would probably need 1 or 2 new tires to pass. (Not to mention the smoke!)
This could be a good project car for someone with a bit of mechanical or panel beating know how. I don’t have the time or patients for that sort of thing anymore.
I have tried to give an accurate representation of the condition of the car, however it is sold as is, where is. The car is available for viewing, and (short) test drives, and I highly recommend that you look at it before bidding.
Any other advise? or offers?
I have already replaced the car, and not interested in fixing it up myself, I just want to get rid of it and get a fair price (whatever that is).

Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy.
That is what i figure!
What would you pay for it? If you wouldnt they wont either.
Not always true, people have different priorities, skills and resources when it comes to these sorts of things, so it may be worth more to say an apprentice panel beater or mechanic who want a project on the side, than it is to me who knows next to nothing about cars and is sick of ones that break.
Just like a compuet that doesn't work may have more value to me if I think I can get it going cheaply.
I guess I would be happy with $1000 for it, but is that realistic?

Iv found that the more info you can provide the more interest people will have.
Unforunatly I don't think its going to be worth much.
You might get $2,000 for it given the work that needs done.

Its scary thinking its not worth more than $2,000, probably less than that, when you think of what it would have cost new, and how popular they were 10 years ago. Its a $60,000+ car.
You might find that it is worth more as parts, they are still very common, and so parts will be in high demand.

That's actually a good idea. Moppie's right, parts might get you more money for it. Your "new" turbo might just fetch a little over $800 if you spent $3000 for it... but I don't think that you will want to take it apart.... so a wrecker might give you good money for it.
