Howdy folks
It's been a while ;)
I've been off getting a new job and stuff, so I haven't had a chance to say hi..
If anyone needs any form of commercial vinyl, flooring accessories, adhesives, polyurathenes, epoxies, resin floorings, roofing membranes, building waterproofing, spray cladding, ice and snow guards and wot-not, I'm a one stop shop! (although, I know crap all about what I'm selling at the moment :o )
Hows the camera folks of NZ going? I haven't had much chance to pick up a camera in ages, last attempt was D1NZ round 2... that was forever and a day ago. My pics turned out ok, sold one I think.
Anyhoo, be cool to each other :D
ello, fancy seeing you online here..
A mighty fine selection of shots you did..

Volcanoes is looking very unlikely for myself and Kirst now. :(
As I had mentioned earlier, have some drifting on the same day, which they've just asked me again if I can make it, and please let them know ASAP.

All I asked was for a banner under Pictures

Does sound like there will be a few smaller get togethers, including getting my lens back from Tony. ;)

Dam I hate defeat. Looks like I will just have to manually reduce the vignetting in ARC. I cant justify another camera. I looked at a Canon 1DmkII $5000 or 30D $2300 (ish) and I would rather buy lens with that sort of money.
So I have a new shopping list..... 1.4TC, set of autofocus extension tubes and a remote shutter with timer.
I want to look at a macro lens but first I think the extension tubes will give me a start. Johns manual ones are a pain in the butt for focusing esp with a breeze
With spring on the way I will focus a bit more time on getting some flower photos and bees.
If its fine this weekend Im going waterfall shooting, I want to see how much I have learnt in the last 3 months. So if any one wants to come out to karekare (4-5hrs) let me know.

Anyway, our Noink imposter had a birthday yesterday... Happy birthday again.. hopefully we can make a semi nice appreciation to the shooter with the bad camera.
Tony: I'm not working Friday and Monday. I have to work Saturday.
No weekend for me. Poor Kirst.
If you're free tonight, and want to unclench your hands off the lens.. I'll be in Parnell from 8:30 tonight till probably 10:30.. That's just as close to you. ;)

Weka's planning  Based on the tests of the Sigma 50-500 Sigma 120-300 and the Canon 100-400 I have come to the conclusion that the Sigma 120-300 is the sharpest and an idea replacement for the bigma. 300mm with 2 xTC produces a way sharper photo that the 50-500mm @500mm.
However in order to pay for it I would have to sell the following Sigma 24-70 Sigma 50-500 and the Canon 70-200F4. This would leave me with Canon 17-40mm 50 F1.4 and 85F1.8. Sigma 120-300.
Beside the weight of the 120-300 can anyone thing of any reasons NOT to do this. I dont really want to loose my Canon 70-200F4 but its for the greater good :)
Is there anything of intrest to anyone if I choose to sell PM me.

Thats a big gap between the 17-40 and 120-300. But if you don't use that range go for it. It's better to have 1 lens you use and love than 3 you don't.
Personally I couldn't live without the 24-70 range (on FF), and you probably would only get $500ish for it, so I would keep that. But if you personally don't use that range......

Well if you do win Lotto, you'll be able to pay someone to caddy all your camera bodies around for your lense selction on the day. Eithor that or instead of a backback camera bag, you will need a little motorized trailor :)

Who told you it's the autofocus and 8.5fps?
The 5D is exceptional focus ability due to a 35mm full frame sensor.. I was reading up on it too...
You only ever need 8.5 fps for capturing a big accident or something. Anything else, if you're firing away, the focus will be slightly askew..Much better to compose click, refocus compose click... Lately, I'm getting 95% of shots nicely framed and sharp... A year ago it was 60-80%.

I didnt use servo mode yesterday or multi shot. Dont use that side much for either landscape or portrait.
The reason for going to a 1D MK11 is weather sealed and 1.3 crop second body and tele. No use getting it and selling 5D as then I wont have full frame and UWA.
Why do you think sports people us this camera 45point focus system things move.

You've got to look at what's best for your interests.
Personally in your position, I'd definately keep the 5D.. Ignore temptations of a 1DII and also the 120-300
And instead save for 6 months, buy a 30D, and use a 2nd body for 1.6 crop and 70-200 + 50-500.. And 5D with 17-40, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4, knowing DOF is incredibly tighter on FF compared to 1.6x crop.

Well, from an amateur's point of view, I like your photos, and I'm sure you'll make it to the point where you're earning a good income. I'm looking forward to your portrait shots, I'm pretty keen on portraits myself, so it will be good to see how you go. I find it hard to take photos of Liz that portray her as I see her, I imagine it would be easier to take photos of a model because there is no embarassment and less pressure. I haven't said to her that I want to take photographs of other women tho... Perhaps when I get a decent flash.

Initial findings (Only driven it round the block) compared to 10D. Review screen is HUGE. It's almost as big as my TV. Startup time is non existent as is the time to chimp (TTC). 10D is click, make a cuppa, look at picture. TTC now, barely get time to move the camera before the pic is there. First time I pressed the shutter I took 5 photos in a row. That button is very sensitive. The 15-30 is even better than before. I think I'm gonna like 1.3.
Gotta work the rest of the weekend so time will be limited. Plus there is no motorsports going down here either. Look forward to Aussie next week.

Rang Auckland Camera yesterday about a sigma 10-20 and was told "I think we have just one left." I quizzed them and it turns out it is a demo model - but no discount thank you very much! I've had this response before - "just one left" - on other gear I've asked about. What's the experience among the group? I don't think I'll ever buy the 'last one' from them based on this revelation.
Another matter...
I've bought most of my gear from them over a couple of years and spent a pretty reasonable sum. On the matter of price, I've asked them, in person, if they considered customer spend and loyalty, but it seems to receive a discount I should have spent it all at once! I'm keen to know how you have been treated in this regard by AC, and who gets a good deal there. Has anyone scored a discount there?

Iain, I don't think I would be too worried about a lens that had been on display, and demoed, but would not be so keen on a camera body, depending on the shutter release count. Auckland camera's prices are pretty sharp for most things too, not far off the NZ online retailers, and in some cases cheaper. I guess I see it as a trade-off. You can buy from an online retailer, and not have the opportunity to see and try these things, or you can see and try them at a real store, but as a result of that there is a chance that other people have played with the lens you buy. I know I have played with plenty of lenses at AC that have gone back in the cabinet afterwards, and no doubt others have bought and taken home with them. Swings and Roundabouts.......Call it karma if you like. (But I am also happy to buy second hand lenses, which others are not!)
I would consider AC my first port of call if I want to buy something new, but I wouldn't say I hold any loyalty to them, it's just that they treat me well, and prices are good. I don't hesitate to buy elsewhere if I can get a better deal(trademe is a more likely option for me these days.)
We all spend a fair bit on our photography, but compared to a full on pro it is probably not that much, and I don't imagine that their margins are good enough to give a discount to anyone who ever spent a few thousand dollars with them.
My $0.02

An appreciated 2c too, Scott! I've certainly no complaint about their being helpful, and prices pretty good for a face to face retailer. I wouldn't have gone back time and time again if it were otherwise. Good to hear your views on the lens thing - you make a fair point.

Another reason I splashed out. A quick poll around my work colleagues made me realise I didn't spend an awful lot. One has to have the latest boat and engine, another spends all their money on horses. Me/we, probably have a fairly cheap hobby.
Auckland Camera Center were kind enough to offer a 30D or a 5D until I got my 1D. Kudos to them as no-one did. Pro Gear, didn't have a single problem when I first bought my D30. I am, however, someone who wants a few $ off if the goods have been handled.

.....Birds in flight.
Same princapals apply as fast motorsports. So a Sigma 120-300 F2.8 is now on my list. I will also be upgrading my 70-200F4 to a 70-200 F2.8 before to long.
Goodluck with them in flight - they have a tendancy to suddenly shift off into another direction when they are being tracked - or skimming behind a branch just as you press the shutter...
I have been 'attacking' them with the 100-400 and am often finding it is just not long enough.
On another note, how is your 17-40 going on the 5D? I am picking up the 16-35 today and am hoping for a good sharp one.
Sorry about the weather over there chaps - lovely day here :)

Wazza I think the 1D Mk 3 will be for you with the type of photography you do. I hope it will drive the others down in price. That way I can get a 1DnMkII

The 17-40 is perfect on my 5D. I love FF. The birding should be a great learning curve. I am a nature person and with spring comming all the Tuis, wood pigeons and the flowers, bees etc.

Cool - thanks for that.
As for the birds - I imagine the Tui will present a challenge with its colouring scheme (and I know you love a challenge). Over here, they tend to 'cheat' and just present multi-coloured birds :)
Wood Pigeons - yeah, the 'illegal tegel' - cool bird and nice to get

I thought of the Aucklanders when I read this in the EOS-Magazine newsletter:
Canon has beaten its own profit forecast for the second quarter of 2006. Gross profit totalled $4.37 billion, 0.7 percent higher than forecast. Compared to last year, net sales increased by 13 percent, gross profit by 16 percent, operating profit by 33 percent and net income by 29 percent.
Well done for your contribution!:D

Had a little play with the new Sony SLR this morning. One of the guys at work has got one (He had a KM film SLR & lenses). I haven't got any test shots but my impressions are. Build quility is OK, probably better than the 350D, but not as good as a 20D. I didn't like the handling. I'm no big fan of the 350D handling (although the battery grip helps a lot!) but the Sony felt awkward in my hand, and I couldn't get a comfortable grip on it. The shutter button felt too far back to me and hard to reach. The other controls seemed OK, but obviously unfamliar.
The kit lens seemed to be better than the canon kit lens. Although I can't coment on the optics, build quality, focus speed, and general feel of the lens was better than mine.
It was kind of strange only having one LCD. All the settings etc are displayed on the chimping screen.....not sure what that will do for battery life! It was a nice big screen though.
Overall my impression is that it is a very nice CONSUMER level camera. It looks nice, and has lots of good marketable features (Anti shake, 10MP, SONY name on it, KM accessories support and heritage). I'm not sure if the handling issue was just because I am unfamiliar with it, but I have not had the same issue when handling 20D, 5D, and some Nikons.
I'm sure it will sell well, but I won't be jumping ship. Hopefully it will have a positive effect on the market, it will be interesting to see what Canon's response will be....

That's interesting. I am sure Canon got there hands on it quickly and are pulling it apart as we type words on a keyboard.
The good thing about the sony is going to make the big players for SLR cameras to better there product. Also dropping the price :)
I guess in a month or 2 we will find out what canon is going to do.

Hmmm, I think they will have to respond to the Megapixel war soon, those of us "in the know" know that the difference between 8 and 10MP is net really that much of a big deal, but those marketing people it is everything.
Noink are releasing a 10MP replacement for the D70 in the next few weeks, Canon will be feeling the presure now...

Hmm... I have this feeling that my IRD cheque is arriving soon -- there aren't any 70-200mm EX DGs being advertised in TradeMe... and it looks like Mattoron's sales are being pulled out by TradeMe customer service... I should give Auckland Camera a call and check on availability and updated pricing...

Welcome to Tim_bo!
Unless Canon come up with some improvements in their physical sensor design i'm not sure i'd want a 1.6X crop camera with 10MP. A 12MP 1DMk3 would be interesting though. The only thing that's good for really is cropping, since you won't get a signficant amount more detail. I wouldn't even have a 5D, because the lens has to bend the light further you get much more distortion. I've asked the guy who works for me shooting weddings to use the 20D for group shots unless he can use 50mm+ on his 5D.
B&H is worth checking out, but Auckland Camera can be cheaper than B&H once you take shipping and GST into account.
