Unless Canon come up with some improvements in their physical sensor design i'm not sure i'd want a 1.6X crop camera with 10MP.
Funny you should say that, Nikon seem to think that people want to buy the 10mp D70, which may or may not be full frame. personaly I don't think that it's going to be full frame. After all how many FF has nikon done yet ?

Hmm... I have this feeling that my IRD cheque is arriving soon -- there aren't any 70-200mm EX DGs being advertised in TradeMe... and it looks like Mattoron's sales are being pulled out by TradeMe customer service... I should give Auckland Camera a call and check on availability and updated pricing...
Check out one of "glam"'s auctions and ask if he can put one up for auction.
He's a Canon and Sigma agent.

google recommended some new keywords that don't include Wellington, the change was made today. Don't click it, it costs me money! I'll review it in a couple of days and see if the new keywords do get me more business or not.

Go on....you know you want too.....someone will lend you a lens while you save up for the one you want (I have an old 28-80 USM if you get desperate, and I could loan you a 1Gb CF too.) And the perfect burn in test for it would be this Saturday...

Just in case any of you blokes in Auckland want to take your better halves (and kiddies too) for a day out -- Tina and I had lunch at St. Margaret's Country Garden Cafe in Karaka (6 Dykes Road)and they had the best tasting Clam Chowder I've come across in the last 7 years. That alone is probably worth the 30-45 min. trip. Food was good too. The cafe had a nice ambiance with the fireplace going.
A pity though that today's weather was so crappy that we weren't able to have a look at 6acres of gardens. But, we're going back when the weather is better.
Btw, the cafe is closed on Saturdays mainly because of weddings.

Yeah, I've read lots of reviews, some people swear by it, some people hate it. The focus seems to be an issue for lots of people, but then a lot of other people say theirs is perfect first time.
I thought I'd decided on the 28mm Canon f/1.8 from Quality Camera Australia for 700 AUD delivered, but the sigma is so much cheaper... I just wondered if I'm only paying more for the Canon badge....

Basically I'm going for the prime so I can use it in low light, my flash was pinched a little while ago, and I've discovered that I prefer not using a flash anyway. So basically I want a fast prime that I can use for some environmental portraits - we're off to Thailand for a couple of weeks in October, so I need to get it by then (and learn how to use it).
The 28mm comes pretty close to 50mm on a full frame, so I figure it's about the right length, for the right price. Unfortunately the budget can't stretch much more than 850 NZD in that time frame :(

I read that as well, I think some lenses needed calibrating. I would buy from Auckland Camera, their price is good, and I suspect service will be quicker and easier if something goes wrong.
Of course buying the Canon is a safer bet, but when the Sigma works it's meant to be very good. One advantage is I know Canon can calibrate lenses in NZ, and they have been quick to service my lenses in the past, and local support is especially important for a pro. F1.4 to F1.8 is a bit less than one stop, which can make a difference but isn't a deal breaker.

Big refund cheque AND a truck load of brownie points! Nice work!
As fate would have it, my dear wife broke her glasses the other day, and, in the interests of preventing her from stumbling around the lounge tripping over my camera gear, and to make a substantial deposit to the brownie points bank, I have consented to her replacing them. ;) In the process, I have realised what good value a new lens represents! For just under $1K she gets a couple of pieces of polycarbonate and a a bit of shaped wire. Think of the nice glass that money could buy! I did just that.....never mentioned a new lens....but certainly thought about it  . Now I KNOW she can read my mind, because, she said "If I am getting new glasses, I suppose you should be able to get a new lens..." Question is, should I be pleased....or alarmed?

I don't know what it takes to get a trade account at one of the major electronics distrubutors, but I imagine they would want some evidnence that you are a genunie retailer. At the very least there would be a minimum order, or prehaps 10 units.
Now 10x1600 is a lot of money to invest just to get a cheap camera.
Otherwise there is nothing to stop everyone buying from them direct.

Go for Canon then. Mind you it does show that Sigma are on the rise. My next 3 lens will be Sigma, only because canon dosnt have what I want in the range.
Sigma's got the 1.6 crop market. 1D and FF still belong to Canon.

POTN ourselves could be a dealership.
What is stopping one of us buying 30D's at cost price from Canon for say $1600, and then adding gst, selling them around for $2000, and uncercutting still. :)
Graham was saying he gets far better dealer prices now he has proven himself as a dealer.

I would still put money to glass before a new body, unless it was a cheaper backup body.. Or you had spare cash, if your 5D ever fails, and need to go 5 weeks without it, like I had to over Christmas!

5 weeks will kill me without a camera. Ok here is my glass list now.
17-40 24-70 70-200 50-500 2primes 50/85 The 70-200F4 with 1Dmk2 with 2xtc and 1.3 crop =182-520 still be sharper than the Bigma.
Its the telephoto end in my collection that is the weak link. Under 200mm Im very happy and they are all sharp lens. They all shine on the 5D.
Having a 5D and 1D I get the best of both worlds. Going for a 30D would only help the bigma not get sold. Having tasted the 120-300 and how dam sharp it is with a 2xTC, the bigma's days are numbered.

Help........ Someone talk me out of a 1D quick
Hmmm... lets see.
F4 will always be F4 - same depth of field on a 1D so no real advantage in getting those nice clean shots with out of focus everything else.
2X TC - I've only suffered a pretty poor example of these but from what I read ANY 2X TC isn't as good as the right lens to start with - is the bigma going to autofocus on a 1D with a 2X TC?
Weather sealed - not sure about that being useful if the lenses aren't.
8.5fps - not sure how this helps your landscape or waterfall photography. Maybe for birds in flight but probably sod all else.
Great focus system - anything that gets focussing more locked-on to what you want get's my vote. Would you still use center focus point only?
Backup to 5D - having that much $ tied up in a "backup" isn't all it's cracked up to be. Two lots of sensors to clean, two lots of memory, two lots of controls and custom functions to keep track of. Not sure how easy it would be to swap between the two types - reason I got a 2nd 20D instead of a 350D or 300D was to keep the "sameness" and to be honest only one body gets used 90% of the time. Having a more expensive body sitting idle wouldn't be the best move...

1D has two burst modes. Either can be programmed. 8fps is the max on either setting. The lower setting can be set to 7fps if you really wanted to, or even 1fps.

Whats your take on the bigma? Dark edges on bright days. I guess you dont know how soft it is untill you compare it to some thing sharp. In my case my 70-200 with a 2xTC would be sharper at the same focal lengh.
The Sigma 120-300 F2.8 with a 2xTC on the 5D gives me 600mm and it blows the bigma out of the water. Eats the canon 100-400 with no TC.
Its heavey and lets face it I already have a Canon 70-200F4 so I get what another 100mm for $3400 abouts. Or a Sigma 240-600 F5.6 with a 2xTC always attached now thats worth $3400

Tony -- when huge decisions come my way I grab a few pages of ruled paper, have 1 column for advantages, and another one for disadvantages. On another, priorities/needs vs. wants. It is all well and good "thinking" about it... but when everything is in paper I get to see things in a clearer, and level headed way.
I agree with Fiona -- Sandra should get more money for her new car. At the end of the day, my partner in life has priority over other material things. Besides, having a better car will make Sandra feel better about your spending a whole heap more for a body ;-)
If it is any help, get the glass first. Once you've maximised your 5D then you can get the 1-series. Remember, it is what you do with what you've got rather than what you have.
My 2 cents for the evening.
PS -- that was painful... I actually wanted to egg you on and have you buy the 1-series ;-)

The only thing that depreciates quicker than a car is digital camera bodies ;)
Glass on the other hand always holds its value.
EDIT: Opps Scott already pointed that one out
Very true though, when the 10D came out three and a half years ago it was priced around $5000, now what is it worth given that a 350D is actually better spec'd? My 20D was $3000 when I got it now its replacement the 30D retails at $2200.

Well we know one thing is Sandra will get another car. Their offer came back at $4200. I was thinking $4000.
B&H can do a Sigma 100-300F4 for 900US and Sigma 150F2.8macro for 600US. The Sigma 120-300 F2.8 $2400 US (does not include freight or dutys)
The F4 will only be of any use on a 1D (2xTC auto focus F8.0 The F2.8 fine on the 5D add to that a 1.4TC with kenko and during the day we have one big telephoto with autofocus. 300mm + 2xTC + 1.4TC
This reminds me of what came first the chicken or the egg. What ever I buy my photos better improve by 100% :)

I already have a 420 so will use the 5x0 as the master and the two 4x0s as slaves.

Posted these also in Landscapes.. Mentioned my grandfather has ordered a new 8" Celestron telescope, to replace his 10" Meade, which is probably 10 years old. The quality should be better with the new one. :) Waiting for some more astrophotography.
I got me a 6inch SkyWatcher here :D Pretty hard using an SLR on it though :(

Congrats!
Maybe next time it will be enough for a 1DMKIIn :)
Nah thats MattL total from lotto, you get 1 big win and that was his.
Im saving mine up, I want first place not forth
The funny thing is how much people had to spend to make $20 out of lotto.
Weathers looking good for Saterday
My wife has asked me to ring the bank so she can get another car and I get a ??????.
Based on the feed back from last night the smartest move would be glass. Sigma 120-300F2.8 Sigma 150 F2.8Macro. Sell the bigma and Canon 70-200F4 and get a Canon 70-200F2.8. Pick up a 1.4xTC and a desent bag to hold all my stuff in.

Thx Warren, Luckily it was in the morning and sunny outside so some natural light filtered through. Used the 70-200 f2.8 is, iso 800, shutter priority, 1/320 handheld

Yes thanks, 6 year olds and rechargable batteries go together like fish and chips with L&P. I've got plenty of batteries and a charger.

Nice photos you have got there. do you get many looking at buying them? How hard is it to shot. I know the guy who runs hamilton devils club down here and keeps saying that I should take some photos as I might get some interest in people buying them.
However I don't know the light and the fastest lens I have got is the 50mm F1.8. How close are you to the action and I guess you are using F2.8 all the time.

Thx, This was my first shoot for the club, more sales are made if you shoot and then show and print at the tournament but that was like to much hard work!!, I'm to old and lazy for that ;)
Each club will have very different lighting so this will affect your pics dramatically, go out and give it a go, as its good fun and hands on learning experience. If you sell any then its an added bonus.

Warren, nic pics of the moon. Since a telescope is cheap I should go and get one :) had a love of astronomy first before a love of photography.
Have you thought of increasing the contrast on the photos just a tad. I think it makes the details on the moon stand out a bit more.

That looks a lot better through a telescope, and Jupiter showing also.
That's like 2500mm focal length.
The Celestron telescope is around US$4000.
For what it does, and top focal elements, motors, GPS, this and that.. does a crap load more than a similar price Canon 300mm F2.8
