What do you use to take a pic of the camera you're selling?
Unless you've got a good backup camera...
you could use a disposable to take better shots than some I've seen.

[quote: Shellie/]Hi John
I have had this lense appraised at Wellington Photographic Suppliers, for approximately $1400.00, if you are interested in a buy-now then I will put one up otherwise I will let the Auction run, kind regards Shellie (-: [quote]

Thanks Simon.

Was quite a surprise really.

Hopefully I can get enough bookings, then magazines, and eventually be accredited to cover any event I feel like doing.. Free entry, and it's fun.

Still, I know it's not enough money to live off. But certainly will cover my landscape photography rent at craftworld. By the end of this month, would have enough money in the account for a compact lens.. Maybe a 50 1.4.. ;) - But I won't. :p

So based on what you guys saw of my "model" shots what can I do better?

Second thing. What should I be charging. We spent about 2.5hrs 120 photos. I spent about the same thime processing them all. What do you think would be a fair price for a A3 print. Do they pick the frame? Do give them a CD copy? (after they have brought a print)

Ideas welcome.

Oh am I any good / have I the potential ( I can take NO as an answer). Im not into wasting time or money.
Maybe intresting to show your wives and see what they think as "they" would be the client.

My photographic tutor said as a rough guide for charging, take into account all your costs and multiply them by four. Not worth it for you though if you just sell one 6x4 print for a couple of $$$, so in the case of portraiture he suggested a "sitting fee" somewhere from $50-$100 if you are good. Wipe the fee if they get a lot of prints. Make sure you invoice that as a discount though, people like discounts!

I think you know the answer.

We are often our own harshest critics. Petes fees seem about right to me. I was told take everything into account and double it but that was for matted photos. My biggest hurdle is charging people more than what it costs me. Take a deep breath...

weka2000

We are often our own harshest critics.

I would rather be to hard on myself. I would rather have the client blow my trumpet or people in the group who I respect tell me if Im any good.

"Thats nice" as an answer to critiqing a photo makes me cringe. I would loan you my 5D if you came right out and said I could shoot a barn door if I tryed.

"Thats nice" dosnt cut it. To do well in business you need to be the best. If you dont have what it takes then dont do it. I have a wife and family who depend on me to help bring in the money I dont or wont fail them because "Thats nice" was enought to give up my day job.

Tony, just had a chance to have a good look at the photos on my home monitor (work one isn't worth it).

Well about 5 screen layers cleaned up this one.
Although her face is quite badly under exposed, and I had to erase most of the layers from around it, or it created a bad shadow/high contrast effect.

However, the skin tones around her arms are just about right on my monitor. Which is calibrated.

Moppie, not sure if you can see it on your monitor, but looks looks two big blobby bits around her face - could be the jpeg compression thing, not sure.

I sent them a web question a few weeks ago as ther isn't any mention on their site of GST at all, they answered fairly quickly but don't seem to have added any mention...

Tony,
Been waiting to view them from home before commenting as work monitor is eyeball imparing (probably an OSH hazard)
anyways, these shots are excellent, both you & Liz should be giving up your day jobs. Having spent the last coupla daze working on a photographer's network (with one eye on the passing artwork I might add) I can say you've done really well and most certainly got potential. the shots to me do look a shade dark and some of the posing to me looks a little awkward but I'm sure practice & experience will sort that.

You can stack them as many times as you like to enhance the effect, and of course alter the layer opciaty.

Uh oh, that just planted a seed into Tony's mind... But I have to agree, a light meter will give spot on exposures.

Tony - Sekonik is a very good brand. I think the 558 gives you a 1 deg. spot meter.

Got my last lot of cleaning gear from Wellington Photographic - which consisted of 10x PEC-Pads and a bottle of eclipse for $30. You only need to come up with a spatula thingy & you're good to go.
(would have been really pleased with this kit if I hadn't munted the IR filter trying to remove parts of Piha... )

p.s. I have a box (8 left) of sensor swaps you're more than welcome to if you want 'em - I found them less than effective on the 20D sensor so won't ever use them - is the 350D sensor the same size? Actually come to think of it, I now have two bottles of eclipse so if you want one of them, let me know. At a rate of two drops a clean I can't imagine ever using both up.

tim

I got my copperhill kit direct from http://pbase.com/copperhill , pec pads and eclipse from nulab.com.au but WPS has it now I think - not sure of prices. 10 pads is useless, sometimes I use that many to clean the sensor - it doesn't work first time very often. On average now it takes 1-3 swipes per camera, with one pec pad per swipe.

I found the sensor swabs wern't quite wide enough to do a wipe in one go if you know what I mean, and cos they basicly a folded over bit of material they didn't present a "flat" surface across the sensor so bits seemed to get missed (much like iKirst lately ;) )
As for "working" in town, I'll be at a client site in Newmarket all morning tomorrow trying to do as little as possible whilst appearing to be really busy. [motivation nil at present, something to do with the new contract I've been offered] I'll probably be in the office in the afternoon so let me know & I'll try & meet up somewhere - cell 0275-283-619

What is the story with that? I have heard that one before else where, something to do with small apertures and the digital sensor meaning you shouldn't shoot above f16? Can you fill us in? I do remember reading a thread some time ago about it, but it seemed inconclusive.

Yeah I think you are meaning the light mess up that comes with a 1.6 crop. Although I've never experienced it, but then never shot a portrait above f11.

Still, f8- f11 is best for portraits, f11 being the mostly used unless you want to get creative with dof and large apertures but then you have light spill issues to deal with. f8 will be a touch sharper than f11, this is why f11 is mostly used on people in portraits, its a little softer.

Just a thought Tony but if you shot at f16 with your lights on full then to you should drop to f11, this will brighten your images up a lot. It takes a lot of light to get f16. Obviously I'm unsure of the lights you used and their power so i'm only guessing here.

Low key allows me to use shadows to "hide" parts.

Low key still has perfectly exposure in the parts that are lit, it basically means high contrast lighting and shadows, so if high key is f8 then you would still shoot on f11 for a good exposure of light where you want it. then to create the heavy shadows you would need to direct the excess light. so block it or something to get the look you need with a black cloth. or move your lights closer to the subject and turn your lights down to the right exposure, or use barndoors.

High key is where you would want as much light as possible, without blowing out any features, high key is different to 'backlighting', but many confuse the two. So the lights would be at different places to acheive the different 'keys' and effects.

For low key you can also push the light to just below 'blowing out' the subject, then in ps drag the levels back to darken the b/g. hard to do with digital though because when it blows out it blows out and you can't retrieve the information. best to use image capture if trying to do this so you can see on a proper screen what you are getting.

I think the same, start off by going 1 light 3 feet above the height of the subject and off to the left of the camera. then a second light same position but off to the left, turn it down in increments of .5 or 1 stop with each shot. have the subject 3-4 feet away from the b/g and your lights about the same from your subject, so 3 feet out, then 3 feet to the side each way. do this a lot, it will give you an understanding of light and fill. then turn one light off, then the other. get used to that then expand. you got to really be comfortable with knowing how light works, then you can paint with it.

Boring i know, but you'll find you will do it anyway becuase you'll never quite understand it if you don't do it this way, so better to do it now than in 6mths time.

I can sympathise Kirst! A number of years ago, I was persuaded to work for an acquaintance and worked as a rep for his new company. Believe it or not, it was called "John Smith Ltd" :D so you can imagine how 'cold' my calling was, with an opening line of "I'm from John Smith Ltd...." I found there was a large number of people somewhat hard-of-hearing, judging by the number who responded "Who?"
I can tell you, it was pretty frigid out there....
Bite the bullet, and in the famous words of some guru or other, 'Every "no" takes you one step closer to a "Yes" ';)
Just as a footnote, I left after a year, returned to my profession....the company became a blazing success....but eventually crashed and burned.....

I'd imagine (without any actual knowledge - so take with a grain of salt) that reps usually trade on relationships, so taking time to get into it is to be expected? The no training thing is kind of a bummer tho... At least you've got money coming in to go towards canon products :D

Good deal considering the 70-200F4 does not come with collar, not that I ever used it due to little weight of the lens.

PM with a desent offer for my Sigma 24-70 you know you want it

If I didn't have 3 birthdays, and 2 sets of holiday flights to pay for, I think I might just have taken you up on that offer.

. . .There are perks, I just don't know if I'm cut out to be a rep. I should give it time, I guess. I'm just the impatient sort, I want things to happen now, not in 6 months when clients actually feel like asking for my help on specifying one of my 5000 products. (of the 5000 I am confident enough in 2 - I know crap all of the rest, and I just have to learn.. Training? Ha! where!? )

What I would give to be in your shoes...! The ability to hop from job to job and not worry about where the next one will be coming from.;)

Far too few employers will give a highly skilled, migrant like me a chance to be "the face" of the company... considering that I already have 5 years of proven local work experience... that I have an 8.5 out of 9 in English language proficiency...

After 14 months of looking for a job, I am now resigned to the fact that I will be selling stuff at Hill & Stewart or Harvey Normans -- not that I am knocking the job.

Kirst, be patient. Account management does have its learning curve. It takes time to learn the products, before customers trust you to give them the right solution for their needs. That is the fun part of the job. Once you have their trust, and earned their loyalty that is when you will see all your hard work pay off.

Look at positives rather than the negatives. However, having said all that, if the negatives do outweight the positives then it may be a good time to look for other work. Only you can tell.;)

I am lucky that I have had, and still have the GKPE crew and photography to keep me "sane" The last 14 months haven't been the easiest. Yet we move on.:)

Bridal photos where the white of the dress is blown. This link explains her problem. As a wedding photog you may well know how to avoid this situation.

Hi Steve!

I'm in sales & marketing -- my field is in technical food ingredients. The industry is very small here in NZ and turnover is slow mainly because we have one of the highest pay scales and the jobs are really fun. I've been applying with a whole heap of other industries, willing to take a $20K reduction in pay... but don't have actual experience in the industries to warrant being considered... and I thought that sales & marketing skills are always transferrable!

Had a look at the business -- all new and hasn't gotten off the ground. He and his wife are in the real estate business. He found out the hard way that there was a conflict of interest, i.e., his wife's competitors did not want to give him business that she could pinch off them. He is selling the business and moving back selling houses. So, there is no cash-flow to speak of, and nothing to do due diligence on. He projects around $40-$50K per annum returns though I think that is overly optimistic. I am also concerned about the actual mileage -- 16K kms on a 10 year old import looks very dodgy.

Ok John will keep my ears open, I can imagine that is quite a narrow field in NZ, I know of only one other person in that line of work.

There is always some bugger worse off as I saw this morning when i drove past a house on fire in Cook Street Howick this mornig, the place had been gutted.

Took one photo out the car window as I drove past after dropping the kids at school, I would never make a photo journalist as I felt guilty taking photos of someone elses misfortune.
