planning? there should be planning? :-) not too bad really - to de-clutter (someone fell over my tripod when arriving home this evening, not a happy camper either :-( ) first one has to replace the fabric-covered wiring in the roof. Then one has to install fibreglass batts in said roof (current stage) then one has to install boards across the roof trusses to hold general crap-about-the-place. Hows things at your end? much easier knowing whats happening or does knowledge of said event cause problems in itself?

A job opportunity for those in Auckland, with a CANON SLR, and flash setup, for August 26th, for taking shots for 2-3 hours at a Uni ball. (typically they have a mini studio setup, would be ideal with Tony's setup), however they've said to walk around and take shots. I can tell you a 580EX plus maybe 3 sets of batteries will be a must.

Let me know if you're interested, so I can give another response to this guy.

Charges.. Well possible a fee for being there, and then a cost per print.
As an example..

$5 6x4"
$8 6x8"
$20 12x8"
or $10-20 for a digital image.

Possibly may need a gallery also. With password protection.. ;)

Customs charges are usually only GST if the item is over $500NZ, which that lens is so add 12.5% to that.

That plus GST = $1951.90 -- $129.35 difference to Graham's price... If it was me, I'd pay the $130 as insurance to get local warranty.

Has anyone here done any work with continuous lighting? I am looking at it as an alternative to standard Speedlites or Studio strobes. As many of you are aware my daughter has a sensitivity to flashes (we have seen a specialist about this and it is the same light sensitivity that albinos have) so we can't use flash guns around her.

Up until now any family and friends portraits have been done using natural light, but I am aware of using continuous lighting if you can get it bright enough, as colour can easily be corrected by using the correct WB for the light.

It would be quite easy to assemble to lights that would provide around 500W equivalent of light using Compact Fluros. I am reluctant to use halogen or tungsten due to the heat output.

What would be really useful is to find out is how much light you need to be useful, I am not sure if 1000W would cut it.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Haven't worked with them, so don't know much about them, but i understand they have to be quite close to the subject. Good for products apparently. unsure if they would have heat issues with a human, try googling I'm sure you'll get the info you need. No worries, I have used them for product shooting and they did work well, but no where near grunty enough for portrait work. Did think of using theatre lights, can get Par Cans cheap, but then there is the heat issue again as they are either 500 or 1000W each, two of those and you have the equivilent of a bar heater

A big THANK YOU!!! to Pete for lending me the 70-200 for last night's mathex competition. Thank you also to Duncan for his 16-35

Now the problem is I know how good the damned lenses are...:( Such a dilema...

Here are a couple from last night:

Shot with Duncan's 16-35. There were some 30 schools from Auckland. Some had two teams per school.

Yep you are right, I knew there was a 5 in there somewhere

What really sucks about that whole thing is it is GST on the amount you are billed, so you pay GST on postage as well  Well I had to last time I got hit anyway.

Don't forget the customs 'clearance/handling/let's-rip-em-off' fee plus GST - another $20-30, and they calculate the NZ value of the goods for GST purposes, at a real miserable exchange rate and often estimate a higher shipping cost than you may have paid. Warranty is international so no probs there. I had my nifty (ex B&H) seen to by Canon here at no charge.

Cool now worrries, I'll be in Taranaki over the weekend so couldn't organize anything until early next week anyway.

Yeah pretty much, North Shore, Hibiscus Coast and Warkworth areas.

Are you interested in delving into the property photography market?

The guy's emailed me 30min back, said will be making contact with you.

Hope you can work something out.

I've been interested in architecture etc.
I do graphics and design technology wood both at school (Avondale College), and came tops in both in around 5/6th form.. Guess the visual aspect and design has helped me with a photographers eye for detail.

I'm off out shortly to shoot some native bush/tui's/Piha sunset perhaops if the clouds clear.

Have a good weekend in Taranaki

It looks like the 70mm f4 quality is virtually the same across the Sigma 28-70, 70-300 and the Canon.

It's nice to know it'll take a 1.4xTC and still be sharper at 400mm than the Sigma 70-300 is at 200mm :D

And I've got to get a new monopod as the combination of my monopod, the battery grip and the tripod mount ring means it won't work :(.

Rice is good - Just garnish with a little steak and some chilli sauce.

I dont put filters on my lens any more. Most have hoods. Those that dont are portrait lens.

Must see what a hood for a 50mm and 85mm are worth.

Bit under the weather with photography at the moment, must be due to the loss on trademe :( .

I dont know if the rest of you get like wanting to sell up and get a new hobby. Im still so much up in the air with what I want to photograph. To many ideas and to many choices of lens. There is always something, but now it serious money that im looking at. The tele end still bugs me. Zoom or Prime. Canon or Sigma, FF or 1.3 / 1.6 crop camera.

I guess when I owned the 20D and Bigma I had no idea. Now I know that soft photos do not impress me. I guess we all have stuff others want, and after having a play we want it more.

I use my 17-40 90% for lanscape. I have a 50mm F1.4 and a 85 F1.8. It dosnt get used that much. Im also fund raising for a Canon 70-200 F2.8

I used it heaps before I went to canon glass. Its sharp on both the 1.6 and FF.
Now its better off going to someone who will use it. The bigmas days are also numbered but when you are looking at $4K for a Sigma 120-300 and 1.4 TC. Then again why buy a 70-200 F2.8??? Maybe its time for a tele prime F4 say a 300 or 400mm.

Umm going to have to give this Bigma issue more thought.

Down side to keeping the bigma on the 5D and cropping to a 1.6 is I frame my photos not ever expecting to crop. I crop very few photos. I try to "fill the frame"
So when I compose that could cause an issue.

No worries, I have used them for product shooting and they did work well, but no where near grunty enough for portrait work. Did think of using theatre lights, can get Par Cans cheap, but then there is the heat issue again as they are either 500 or 1000W each, two of those and you have the equivilent of a bar heater

Here is something I can help you with... Continious lighting is my job! Film, TV, theatre, rock. We use it.
We've got about 400 parcans at work here, so If somebody wanted to do a test I could probably bring a couple home for a night. The difference you will get from the bunnings halogens is that a par will spit the light in one place in a nice little blob, rather than lighting everything in sight, so it gets significantly brighter.

If you point 2 par64's at someone from 3 meters, they will :
a) not be able to open their eyes fully,
B) only be able to take the heat for about a minute (gets very warm very quickly, even from 10 meters away you will feel the warmth.
C) you will be able to get f4 iso 100 1/125 ish.

If you spread the same amount of light over a larger area (full body) your milage may very.

If you are serious about going into this, which I would suggest may be a good idea if you want some studio like shots of your daughter, I would suggest going with what I use most of the time for TV.

a 2kw light known as a blonde (http://www.dvt.co.nz/index.php/ps_pagename/productdetail/pi_productid/357)

A nice big chimera softbox*(http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=257350&is=REG&addedTroughType=search)

a TL singlefade to control the brightness and switch the thing on and off safely. (http://www.theatrelight.co.nz/twinglefade.htm)
You'll need to find a stand for it all, and a sandbag on the bottom of the sand to stop the thing tipping over.

The joy of the dimmer (singlefade) is that it makes it easy to turn the thing off while you try and work out that next pose, etc, so you cut down on the heat even more.

softboxes for continuous lighting are different from those used with strobes as they have to account for a much larger amount of heat! The chimeras are good, best quality units that do wonders for keeping the heat away from the talent ( or your daughter, in this case)

Hope some of this will be of help!

Or just buy some used vivitar shoe mount flashes from ebay, get some optical slaves and AA batteries, and you have mini manual portable studio setup. Pars come in a varierty of shapes and sizes (well not really but..)
Par 56's are 300w, par64's are 1000w.

the par 64's come in different beamshapes : (they are not round but a slightly rectangular shape)

CP60 ( very narrow spot, vnsp ) is about 9°x12°
CP61 (narrow spot, nsp) about 10°x14°
CP62 (medium flood, MFL) about 11°x24°

so you can work out the coverage you get based on the distance and beam angle.

I usually get close to a good exposure, but I usually change it in camera raw anyway. Brightness mainly. Brightness shifts the middle of the histogram to the right, but leaves th endpoints the same. I get my best exposures on manual using a hand held light meter and watching the histogram.

She told me a few horror stories about people removing and attaching flashs units that were turned on, and blowing up cameras and the flash.

I suspect it is a bit like unplugging a ps2 keyboard on a computer. Can fry your motherboard, but doesn't actuaaly happen much. Still turning it off is probably a good habit to get into.

Didnt notice any 16-35mm, mind you I stayed away from the canon cabnet I rang first and asked them to put my lens aside so no one else would buy it.

Well macro time. Canon 100mm take 58mm filters umm my 3 close up filters will work as well. Also my kenko 2XTC works on it with autofocus. I will now beable to use my angle C finder with the 2.5 x magnification.

Macro and focus is hard, a bit of wind and its all over.

Went to the zoo to test bigma again. Here are a couple of photos

Never had a problem myself, I sometimes forget to turn anything off, flashes and cameras. Although left camera on during trip to aus, even with self powerdown timer I must have bumped a button because my two full charged batteries in a grip gave me a total of 2 photos. Luckily I wasn't going anywhere interesting, just Sydney.

Im looking at going to the winter gardens tommorow afternoon. Any one else keen.

Im also in the process of making up a flash system for macro using my 580ex (when it comes back) so busy going through the macros section

Well I think im covered now with the under 100mm range.

Still undesided how Im going to deal with the tele end but looks like it will be the Sigma 120-300, thus holding off on the 70-200F2.8

I will need a shoulder bag for all my gear AC didnt have any thing big enough today...now thats a worry.

Who knows, maybe if weather is good (or better than today, anyway) we could go there as well; it is the botanic garden near the War Memorial Museum, isnt'it?

Let me know what time you are going, and I will try and make it, and bring your flash back to you. (Pete is happily using Moppies 550EX)

I am aiming about 3-3.30 as Sandras on night duty tonight

Will spend tonight searching Pbase and photo.net for macro photography and try to get some ideas.

So far it reminds me of making model aircraft....slowely slowely

OK. If we come I'll be the other guy with a 100/2.8 Macro mounted on a Canon camera! :D
Changing the subject: I see that you live in Mangere, and I remember you work in a College. Is it Alfriston? In that case, is it a good school?
There is a vacancy advertized on the gazette, but I don't know whether I'll apply as there are some odd requirements about referees that probably I am not able to fulfil.
