Just how long have you been waiting, and have you asked them? I find IRD to be pretty quick with returning money, as they otherwise may need to pay you interest!
Iain, apparently, they take up to 8 weeks to refund your PAYE over-payment...
John, do you still want to borrow my 10-20 & 70-200?
Hi Scott! The 70-200 yes, and when convenient only. As for the 10-20 I've been thinking that my lens purchases need to be long term since I am going FF one of these days, but not anytime in the next year or two...
I've identified either the 17-40 or 16-35 (but this is too expensive... ) However, I rarely shot below f4 with Duncan's 16-35 so the 17-40 should be it.
Thanks!

That is why I think I am going to get the 17-40 to replace my kit lens. In a couple of years time when I replace my 350D I will probably want to go FF. Then the 17-40 will become my wide angle, replacing the 10-20.

Using Duncan's 16-35 made me realise that it is the "perfect" indoor lens for me, or at least for the way I shoot, e.g., group pics, which necessitates a minimum of f4-8 to give it a proper DOF. The 17-40 has received such high praises and it is the logical choice if you don't shoot below f/4.

you mean because of f2.8?
yeah, museums can have really dingy bits with near-darkness. Being able to zoom was a requirement as changing lenses for each shot wasn't practical (no primes...)
Flash didn't enter into the equation as they won't let you, nor is the tripod option possible. If the ef-s 17-55 had been avail at the time I might have considered it too, but then I had a D60 at the time so getting into square pegs in round holes there.
Actually from memory, the NZ dollar was around 74c US so it was a great time to get stuff overseas (I bought it from a place in Singapore) I'll have a look though some more shots and send you the links if you're interested.

I suspect that having a tax agent must get a quicker response from IRD. i.e quicker refund but at a cost!

Next weekend down to Manfeild racetrack for some more drifting!
Hmmmmm...... was thinking of heading over to the track to have an attempt at drifting shots (my attempts from Oran Park will be in the 'other' section of the gallery when I finally get it online), but I am guessing that unless you have your credentials the only place to shoot from is the grandstand :(
Mind you, if the weather is like yesterday or today I will be quite happy staying at home

Yep, there's a mixed bag of reviews for this particular one -- some being very good, whilst others being so-so. I still sent the guy a note to ask how the IQ was, and why the shift to an almost identical lens.

Reviews are it is sharper than the newer 24-70 F2.8. This is the older version.
Ask him for the serial Number and we can tell you how old it is

I would buy that over a 17-35 F2.8 based on reviews.

If you're willing to give away your shots for free, and take a few odd shots. I was meant to be organising who's going , and where.. I keep suggesting I go furthest, or down to the end looking along, as I have the strongest lens in the power of my Sigma 120-300
forsaken and his partner will be there, as is rendezvous, my mate from Palmerston North.
If you're keen on going in, let me know and I'll see if I can get one more cred..
May need someone for some pit shots, different angles.
matt@d1nz.com and brent@d1nz.com may be able to help you out.
Not my decision unfortunately. They just don't want 5 photographers all shooting from same location giving the same shots.

Well went for a walk with my 50mm will post pics latter. Im in such a fowl mood and the weather didnt help.
Just so uncertian what to get. I know a 70-200 F2.8 is a must. But I have options like 300 F4 prime 400F5.6 prime second hand 300F2.8 prime.
Just so uncertin about primes.
The best option is looking like the 300mm F2.8 and canon 1.4 x tc and 2 x tc. Just a lot of money $5.5K so I cant afford to get it wrong
There is still the 30D + Bigma option
Wazza
22nd of August 2006 (Tue), 02:06
Why would you want to spend even more than a Sigma 120-300?
It's ALMOST as sharp, and offers a lot more versatility for being able to compose shots better. Guess if you want a 300/420/600mm lens, that's ok.. However I like to have 120-600mm flexibility.

I'm not sure what you want these for. For protection from the elements, while NOT shooting, Sue put me onto Kayakers' standard bags:
Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack. I bought a 13-litre one and found it great in squalls and spray on the Kawau Cat, and in forest rain. Weighs only 40g; round base 53x31cm. Mine from ChCh via TradeMe. Outdoor Action on North Shore stock them.
Not for immersion.

I want something sharp within a tele. Remeber I shot objects that dont move as fast as you. The zoo birds landscape etc.

I think it should say "a bunch of Auckland camera geeks who want to be photographers", judging by this thread. Obviously that doesn't apply to everyone, but there's a lot of lens envy here.
I admit to being a gear head but enjoy using the gear and the results as much as the gear itself. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Photography is a hobby, that I do for enjoyment, and collecting or lusting over gear is part of what I enjoy.
I think we could all lighten up a bit. If certain people want to spend all their money on lots of expensive lenses, so what? Personally I am a bit jelaous!

Yeh I agree. For we all know they could be living in a real cheap part of town, drive a crappy car and walk to work in the cold and rain.
Let me say this, we all spend the same amount of money. Some on flash cars, some on flash homes. We all envy something.
As a group of auckland photographers I have never come a cross a bunch of people who are so generous with their gear. People need something and all of a sudden you have offers to help you out.

Just remember these forums aren't even allowed to use the logo.. And even use the Red, and same font. We're different. Such as the POTN neck straps.. It's not a Canon logo, just simple plain text. You'd think a big company won't mind, when we generate a large percentage of buys just buy people googling Canon gear.

Tim, I don't mind being around "a bunch of Auckland camera geeks who want to be photographers" -- they (including those of you not from Auckland) have kept me sane during these past 14 months, are the one of the most generous bunch of people that I've met in my entire life, and I would be hard pressed to find a finer bunch of people elsewhere in the world.
Just because you have your fancy gear doesn't mean people can't aspire or dream to have them one of these days. And just because you are an up-and-coming famous wedding photographer doesn't mean we cannot aspire to be as good, or better than you... even if we don't make money from our gear.
Envy and aspiration are two different things -- one is destructive, the other constructive.
'nuff said.

Kirst visited this morning... Then she left.
The cost of alarm installation and new box and everything is $755...
And finally... They said 2 hours, got there 2 hours before i go to work.. and eventually still not done, but my dad trusted them enough to leave them at my home unattended.. I hope my $18K of camera gear is still in my room.

Kirst visited this morning... Then she left. I'm a sales rep, as you all well know - infact I wrote a hefty post about deciding to stick with that for now, and cheeries for all the advice from all - but my internet carked it as I went to post, and I lost it. Ah-boo!
But I digress!
Until folks I call on decide I am trust worthy enough to give them informed advice on why they should use one of my 5habillionty products, my day's are hard to fill.
I visit people. I have endless coffee's. I park up at places where I have now discovered lots of reps park up to kill time. Many base model, late model cars all in a line. (I heard on the radio that kiwi sales folks are the most honest in the world, and the US sales types are utter lying bastards )
I digress again! (there really is no point to this post )
A new game I disovered today, whilst trying to find the longest route possible to one of my 6 calls a day, was to just follow a car. And follow it for as long as I can - making sure I am headed in the general direction I need to be, and wait for them to notice. I managed to follow a Jeep Cherokee from the top of the Mangere motorway, all the way to the bottom of Richardson Road (near Pt Chev).
Joy!

Hehe - I avoided the city from 11am onwards, but I do like your thinking. We do see some pretty strtong adhesives to hold things permanetly in place, and some very glossy polyurathene toppings. I can see where they would have been useful ;)
Internet access get's me in trouble at work, so I am decidedly jealous of you on that respect.

I figure no job is worth sticking around for. I got a boss that just does nothing. Tell him of a problem and he goes yea yea I will take care of it and bingo, nothing happens.
So he got pissed of when I sent an e-mail to him and his managers about someone smoking in the company car. But is it even worth it trying to do something about. Nope.
But anyway the best advice I can offer Kirst is, if you really wont to be successful in what you are doing, read a book on the subject, go to classes and do what ever it takes.
or you could just drive around all day :)

Heh - I have a boss, and a business manager that just LOVE the phrase 'let's ask Kirstine' when I have a question on something I'm not quite sure on. I know they are just trying to encourage me to find out for myself, but I wouldn't have asked unless I was really struggling with something.
I have decided to stick with it for at least a year. I know they'll send me on courses when the opportunities arise, and I'll take full advantage of them. If, after a year, the job is no better, then I'll have a years repping experience under my belt. More doors may open. I've come from a project co-ordinator background, but that means nothing in the sales world.
At least I am used to driving the Falcon. And I'm glad I'm not the one paying the fuel for it.

As a group of auckland photographers I have never come a cross a bunch of people who are so generous with their gear. People need something and all of a sudden you have offers to help you out.
are the one of the most generous bunch of people that I've met in my entire life, and I would be hard pressed to find a finer bunch of people elsewhere in the world.
I have to agree, and in my experience the person who probably gets the most comments about the amount of gear he buys (you all know I'm talking about Tony) is amoung the most generous. Thanks Tony! I hope you work out your 70-200 issue!

The weather wasnt the best and shooting into salt air may not have helped.

Mine are black and no where near that thickness, I buy from a local framer in east tamaki. I need to increase the thickness as over time they tend to buckle a bit unless framed. I get them matted for competition at a local camera club.

I just looked at the entry for the NZIPP awards... you should see what it costs to enter two prints!
$40/print, so $80
NZIPP Print Case: $95 (they make you buy one of their print cases to return you prints, if you don't already have one).
Enter fee: $50
Total NZIPP fees: $225! Add onto that the $25 for prints, and $110 for framing, total cost is $360! Not sure i'm going to bother now, that's a fair whack of cash just to get two images into a competition!

I am also wondering if I may not be as steady as I once was. Im finding I get hand shakes a lot more so maybe I need a mono pod. The F2.8 is a lot heaveier. Will re test today.
Did some testing with the 2xTC at 300mm and 400mm pretending it was a prime and seeing what I could capture. I hope to test the 300 F2.8 this weekend down at Mission Bay.

Still if you win it or get a placing, you won't be too worried about the price it cost compared to the boost it'll give you in the market.

Oh, really? Well the landscapes you posted not so long ago were real nice
Thanks mate. I need to get out and about a bit more. Back to the west coast and the waterfalls.
Mind you out east could have some oppotunitys as well.

Remember Aaron's post count posts were more of a piss take, as he once said how the heck does Tim do 15,000 in less than 2 years??
Well you've had your fun now. ;)

Where the heck did the stupid 370D name come from anyway? Sure 300D, 350D... but logically, not increasing by 50s, but more 40D / 400D for the baby model. Guess with the cheapness, there is no need for an absolute base model of 4000D with no manual mode, only Auto, and ISO 100-800
