Sorry to go OT here, but it is general ramblings thread.
I just returned home from my Mums. My dog was run over and killed tonight.. I dont know what else to say. She looked just like she was sleeping, but wouldnt wake up.
Please. if you have pets / children, keep them locked inside, and never, ever let them out.
Matt, so sorry for your loss... how the heck did it happen?
I hate that feeling... I've had 3 who died and things were never the same... but it hasn't stopped me from wanting to get a puppy for my 2 boys... maybe when they're a little bit older...

I think Ian wants it first. The way to send it back is well packaged, by courier so it's insured! I think it's worth US$250.

Then you plan to go back with your 20D and put your glass on with your CF card and take a few snaps......... Then you drive home and realise that you need to pay off the 20D before you can get the 5D

There's a quick way to solve this... and since Canon launch something every 6-12 months... pay the whole thing off in 6 months ;) Yes, this is the headache we all have to live with when new product turnaround is far quicker than how long we have to pay for stuff... :( By the time I get to free up more cash there will be 20megapixel SLRs out there at the price I got the 20D for... bugger!!!

Sorry, Tony, I thought you had already had a play with it.
If Tim can wait till Easter then I think Duncan would be the safest courier we have :)
Other wise we run a daily internal courier between Auck and Welly, then get someone in welly to put it on a local NZC courier. Tim could try picking it up, but I doubt he has enough clearance to get in :)

THe problem still is that they offer store warranties, and not the manufacturer ones... so if something goes wrong off they send it to where they bought it from... and as you've experienced, it can take a loooooong time for anything to happen.

Hey Aucklanders
For those living within drive of Botany downs, Hanafins camera shop has a special going untill the end of July (I think) 6x8 prints, while you wait, for $3!
8x12, 8x10 prints, while you wait, for $3!
That is not a typo. Make sure you tell them I sent you :-)

Digimax will do them for me for $2.95, and I don't have to wait, or mess around with Hanafins silly Kodak printer booth, which dosn't even have a calibrated screen on it :)
$3 8x12s could be a good deal though.

Those are good prices. One just has to make sure that the pictures being printed don't need tweaking.
So far, I'm happy with printing A4 sized ones on my Pixma -- and that sunset shot from the Gen-I rooftop looks great and is now on the wall. I just wish framing didn't cost so much here...

Kirst also shouted a friends of the Zoo pass, which will make great use for the camera gear... Silly me, went from Glenfield to Auckland Camera to try monopods etc with the big lens, and forgot to bring it. :o
Ended up buying the nice ones anyway, and went around the zoo for a quick stroll.. The friends of the zoo pass is $100 for a couple, and means we can visit 365 days a year, for nothing extra. So instead of a stroll down the beach with my fine lady, it will be along to the zoo with cameras in tow.. Cheetah's arrive in June/July also. :)

V12s that I know of in NZ that have 4 valves per cylinder means its most likely a BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari or Lamborghini.

$650 is a steel for that lens if it was in good nick. I am very happy wih mine for $700. Still half the price af a new parallel imported one. You want to borrow it some time? Or don't you need any more temptation?
The new model Sigma just anounced looks great! 70-200 f2.8 Macro! Focuses as close as around 50cms I think instead of the 1.8 metres of the current one. And has the big tripod mount tlike the bigmas.
The 70-200 plus the 1.4TC I got at auckland camera second hand take care of the long end for me. Still on my wish list is a better walk around to replace the kit lens, and a WA.

The 24-70 is great for walk around. it would go well with the 70-200.
Dont seem to have a use for 70-200 bigma covers all that. The 150macro will be the next buy
I think I would find the 24 end too wide, and I spend a lot of time in the 18-35 range so would probably find swapping between the 24-70 and 10-20 a pain! Saw the new Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 in Photo Warehouse today. They are asking $750, so auckland camera will probably have it soon for $650-700. It is not an EX lens and not constant aperture, but fstopjojo's earler review looked promising. EFS 17-55 f2.8 IS would be nice but is likely to be close to $2K here.
Then again, by the time I'm able to buy another lens there may be newer generations out there
Me too.....the only way I will be buying more lenses this year is if I sell my macro (Which I may do) or get a really good bonus (which might happen too). either way the EFS 17-55 f2.8 IS is likely to be out of reach.
Warren was saying yesterday, his lens is 10 times more expensive, but less than twice as sharp..
I bet is is at least 10 times as heavy too....

User error? Warren probably needs to work out more so the lens doesn't shake whilst on the monopod

I'm getting Tim's monitor calibration unit from Moppie Tuesday. Who is next? I'm o'seas from Friday morning until 15th so would like to hand it over before I leave.
Wazza, those are some 'very acceptable' zoo shots. They must be right up there if Tim remarks about sharpness.. I must have a proper read of this thread - I've been somewhat preoccupied lately.

Does anyone know where I can buy a driver's side sun visor for my wife's 91 Subaru Legacy SW? I was trying to swing the visor to block the sun on my right when the d@mned thing broke! Suffice to say I drove home really pissed off because the sun kept shining into my eyes giving me a headache! :-(

Change of plans. Since no-one appears to want this unit when I have finished with it, I'll leave it in Moppie's care. I'm away from Friday until Wed next week and wouldn't want to tie up the unit for that period. If it's still available late next week I'm keen.

I just happen to have one of those, which I didn't have a chance to get rid of over the weekend because I was horribly sick. How does $1500 sound, and I throw in a slightly used Legacy GT Wagon.....

Ok - was being generalistic. I should have stated that our menu's are what we've adopted and adapted.
Even Auckland is a city with a culture based around no apparent culture at all (think about it - bar the Jafa thing, and the Sky tower, who are we really?)
Incredibly inventive, I agree - just look at Mr Rutherford (don't tell him his hopes and dreams were abused though, by some folks :p)

Today, I went and signed some contracts for another show coming next week, picked up my keys for the Aotea center, went to PCL to pickup another one of my huge pano's to send to Tauranga, put another image in for mounting, organised Tonys 8x12 of my Pigeon mountain shot, and a couple other 8x12's. I Gave somebody a lesson in how to use trademe (!). I picked up the proof run of my postcards, and had a chat to them about the cost of a first run. I went to the bank to sign some papers so they could give me some money to go skiing with :P

Latest General rambling news.
I quit my job last night.
Got nowhere yet, but not looking.
Will leave in 4 weeks, and take 3-4 weeeks off from anything to have a great time with my lovely girlfriend for her birthday.... Then there's various trips, Daniel/aka rendezvous coming to Auckland 15-21st April, and V8 Supercars.. After that I'll go to work

As for lens.
I've worked out I'll be getting $2500 from holiday pay after tax, plus 2 weddings, plus salary ... So depending how quick I get a job etc..
I would like:
30D
24-105L
100mm Macro.
Particularly a good lens with an all round capability... Which the 24-105 would be... Nice for cityscapes and walking around town. I was also considering the 70-200 Sigma like everyone else... But kinda crosses over with 70-300 and 120-300 I already have.. So 24-105 crosses more, and seems more suitable.
Drifting all the North Island stages is also something I would like to do..

I would have on the weekend at a fun trail ride (140 riders) but rode all day instead :D
