New gear being released in this round that has been leaked, a EOS400D (replaces 350D) - 10MP etc etc, 70-200L f/4 IS, 50L f/1.2 and possibly the 1Ds MK3 (can't verify the last one).
So far no ones confirmed if its actualy real or not yet though. :)

Remember Aaron's post count posts were more of a piss take, as he once said how the heck does Tim do 15,000 in less than 2 years??
Well you've had your fun now. ;)

These are my referalls to iKirst.com

So far for the month of August.
Yeah I know, that's all I was really doing (taking the piss)... guess some people didn't find it amusing and got rubbed up the wrong way, oops... guess I should be a little more sensative hey...
Did you check out that drift link?

Yeah I had already done so a while back. I browse a lot, just don't what to say beyond, "nice shots" each time.
Unless I can add a valid comment, or they're stunning, then I generally don't reply.
Had a few dust spots on those too.. The landscape was awesome, much better than an overcast muddy Pukekohe track! Manfeild track this weekend. So I won't be online, but may have some shots up as soon as I can. :)

As one who has successfully perputated SLR hoaxes in the past, these ones look pretty good, multiple hi res clear angles with different lenses mounted etc, the lenses may be hoaxes but they look pretty good too, did a levels check on the images to look for dodgy photoshop work, found nothing.
My money is on them being real :) But we will all have to wait and see...

If you ever get a chance check out older canon lens. The FD range had some interesting lens. Canon also had a 50mm F1.0 at 1 point and I think it may have been a EF as well.
IS lens seem to be making a impact, maybe I sould look into it, getting old and shakey. Maybe I should get into building a "photographers walking frame "

I would so be into one of those frames when I get older. It would be perfect, you wouldn't even need a tripod, + you could make one with lens holders etc, I can just imagine it!

Hi Matt!
Thanks. Yes, I did read that article in the Aucklander East edition. I doubt though that anything will be done about it... not for at least another 10-years.
I finally start work on Monday at Hill & Stewart Glen Innes, then moving to their brand spanking new store on Lunn Avenue, 100 metres down from Placemakers. No use banging my head against a brick wall for another 14 months. Funnily enough that I have 5 solid & successful years of Kiwi experience in sales & marketing in sales/account management and business development roles! :(
Oh well, I have to put food on the table, pay the mortgage, send the boys to school, keep my wife beautiful, and pay for new lenses!

And yes, if you guys find yourself in the area I'm sure I can arrange fantastic deals for you. It is funny how H&S do not advertise their deals... which happen to be really good especially when you are in a bind.

Yep, going for the 70-200mm L and 17-40mm L. Though torn at the moment between the IS and non-IS. I know that longer term, read - as I get older, the IS is the way to go.
I can grab the 17-40 shortly after I sell off my 80-200 & 28-105. From the advanced search on TradeMe, I think I can still sell the 28-105 for $300+ if I'm lucky (any takers?)
If I stick with the non-IS version I can buy the 2 lenses in one go + a 580EX... what to do...?;)

Congrats John on the role. We all have to slip into some jobs quickly.. I'm glad I never took the job with Slingshot, I would have never survived on the lower pay. The fact 3 months in a row, I've achieved top, 96, 99, 99.3% call monitoring stats, giving me top bonus, confirms I've been doing ok... Add on bonuses, and 5% free super scheme paid, I'm earning $15K more than if I was with Slingshot.

Well Im still at the delima of telephoto. The idea of $4K for 1 lens that has only 1 focal length gives me a head ache.
Im still wondering about the 30D + Bigma idea, mind you I am also still thinking about the 1DmkII and bigma idea as well.
I know I would miss the bigma's 10x zoom but wouldnt miss the softness that it produces on the 5D.

The 16-35 f2.8 is very nice (played with Duncan's) but I find myself shooting 18mm f4 and above... so I opted for the 17-40... not to mention that it is far cheaper...

If anyone is interested with my the 28-105 PM me. I'll give you guys preference over TM.
Description:
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (metal mount)
- Around 5 years old (from when it was given to me)
- has a light scratch on the front element -- not that it affects the IQ.
- has some dust, no moulds or fungus that I can see.
- includes 58mm petal lens hood (screw on DC(II) Hood, not original)
- cosmetically, I'd give it 8/10
EDIT: After reading through reviews, I can say that this is the original 5-blade design and not the newer Mark II or "Macro" ones that have 7 blades (bugger:( ) retails from between $499 - $600+
TradeMe historical sales: $250 - $400.

Congradulations John, best of luck with your new job.
I'm guessing from what I've read that you're an immigrant? I read that paper excerpt and feel for you and yours if so, I personally think it sucks. I get kinda the same problem because I have a hearing deficiency, I would go for a position, send images in and would get a phone call for an interview within the day, but I would not even get a call after the interview for an answer either way, and unanswered calls to them. i personally thought it was extrememly slack and unprofessional of them. So thats why i decided to go it on my own. A little harder, but I think one day those same people might just come knocking on my door, ya never know eh.
Life goes on though eh, i hope you enjoy your new job and hope you go a long way in it.

Thanks Mark! Yes, my family and I jumped off the boat in July 2000 and have never looked back. Life has been good... and I guess one can't have everything. I intend to make the most of this new opportunity -- it is not like me to go into anything half-baked.
I have to agree that there are a number of employers and head-hunters who are very slack when it comes to informing someone that they didn't make it through the selection process. There are those who are ruder still by not having a read of your CV and interviewing you in spite of the fact that they've asked you to go through a battery of psychological and aptitude tests.
In your case, the positive side is that you didn't let the situation get you down and miserable. It takes guts and determination to strike it out on your own. One of these days, the very same people will realise that it was their loss not to have taken you on board sooner!
Cheers!

No one in the group wanted it so Im keeping it. At the end of the day I could not justify a 300/400 prime for $4000.00.
Having the 30D will give me 2 bodys and save me nearly $2000 which I can spend on other camera bits Plus the refund of $1900 gives me $3900

The noise issue has only been tested twice at 1600ISO It did ok but could be tidied up with software. I generaly never go over 400 ISO.
I think by having a 30D and 5D I will get the best of both worlds, The 30D has 5fps no vignetting with the bigma and I will never be down a camera. The 5D will be for landscape and portrait the 30D for the zoo, birds and the moon (tele end)
I started with a 20D (6 months)but sold it a couple of days after the 5D arrived home.

10mp, sensor cleaner, better auto focus, and 799 usd, which is like $1200-$1300 here
apparently better iq as the sensor has smaller pixels. image quality could surpass a 20d or even a 30d

Confirmed the new lenses too:
EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
Canon's latest lens, the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM, is the fastest standard lens in Canon's line-up The EF 50mm f/1.2L USM uses a large diameter, high precision aspherical element to achieve superb image quality. Its large maximum aperture allows incredibly shallow depth-of-field and a circular aperture diaphragm ensures attractive background defocus.
With its ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM delivers virtually silent operation and full-time mechanical manual focusing, along with high levels of dust and moisture resistance.
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
Canon has also announced the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens, which builds on the L-series telephoto zoom lens heritage and adds an Image Stabilizer (IS). Canon's Image Stabilizer compensates for the equivalent of approximately four shutter speeds, allowing photographers to capture handheld shots at shutter speeds four stops slower that would otherwise be possible without camera shake blur.
Combining a fluorite element with a UD-glass element delivers exceptional performance throughout the zoom range. Its ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) offers fast, virtually silent operation and, like the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM, manual focusing is possible even during AF mode with full-time mechanical focusing.
Importantly for travelling photographers, the lens is designed for use in harsh conditions, incorporating high levels of dust and moisture resistance.
Would be a good alternative to the 70-200 f/2.8, more "handholdablity" lighter and now weather sealed - nice :)
Tony - you sold your 70-200 f/4 just in time!

apparently better iq as the sensor has smaller pixels. image quality could surpass a 20d or even a 30d
Small pixels = more noise, unless the sensor technology is better.

I should get it to replace my 10D :) even tho this is entry level it runs rings out what I got at the moment. But the problem is would it have the same feel to it as the 10D, hmm I think not.

does it? really? i would've thought that the noise would be more condensed, so the noise wouldn't be so visually noticable.
Hmm would be worth looking at though

And those are the laws of physics, can't break those!
If Canon built a full frame sensor with pixels the size of their smallest compact it would be over 100MP

There is a physical limit to how small you can make a pixel before it doesn't "see" certain wavelengths of light, also the smaller you go the less light gathering ability and the more noise. It is generally accepted that the pixel limit is around 2-3 microns, any less than that and you get more noise than signal. Some of the Canon compacts have sensors with pixels in that size range already, the fact that they usually have an ISO limit of 400 is testament to the amount of noise those sensors have.
BTW, SLR's sensors pixels are around the 7-10 micron size.

Yeah i know about the physical limit, but where is that limit in conjunction to these particular sensors, 10mp in an 8mp sized digic 11 sensor wouldn't really be noticeable if shooting at 50 or 100 iso in shadow areas, or would it?. And if, with these being smaller pixels, but still at an amount of micron acceptable, would the noise not be smaller in dimension, and thus not so visually noticeable in say a 12 x 18 or something?.

I hear what you are saying, smaller pixel = less light and less gathered noise. All I can think is that the amount of noise is not the same proportion as signal when it comes to light gathering area. People have written doctorate thesis on this stuff, so I am not going to claim to understand it all
Pretty much everything seems OK at the sensors rated ISO (50 or 100), it just seems to be when they up rate things to higher ISO's which is really just amplifying the signal electronically, that is when the noise fun starts

Just been to AC looking at a 30D for my bigma
While I was there I tested a new 70-200 F2.8 and the lens I got was way out
The guy has aggreed to give me full refund.
So will get that tonight.
Hmm, wonder if I should test the 70-200 f4 I got.
The guy I got it from did seem a bit dodgy :D
It's got a Utsunomiya, December 2005 date stamp so it's less than a year old - Hmmm, still under Canon NZ warranty?
I would have to say that with the lens mount tripod ring the monopod is properly useable now.
IQ wise I'm not worried as it is better than my Sigma 70-300 and I was very happy with that but where this lens shines for me is in focus speed :D
I do like it, I like it a lot :D
Oh and it's too big to leave on the camera in the Lowepro Slingshot, Lowepro Topload Zoom 1 or Lowepro Topload 65 AW :(
Fits in the Lowepro Nova 4 though.
Damn, I've got more bags than lenses

So if shooting women is out of the question then what's the point in getting another body? If it was me then I would stick with the bigma and the 5D and everything else you got. As for the vignetting problem, learn to crop around it. use the 5D with a 1.6 crop
tim

Remember sensors are just photon counters with colored filters arranged over the counters. More pixels = less photos = less accurate numbers. For example if pixels A captured 10 photos, and pixel B right beside it captured 8, whereas they should both have caught the same amount of light, that's noise (very simply, and as I understand it).
Hey Tim speak your mind. Im always open to constructive comments. Dont hold back

Designed and manufactured by Canon specifically for the Rebel XTi SLR, this highly responsive sensor's 10.1 million pixels are fractionally smaller than the pixels in the 8 megapixel Rebel XT model
Canon engineers and designers achieved this breakthrough in sensor design by reducing the space between the chip's microlenses while at the same time increasing the sensitivity of each photodiode. As a result, the camera achieves 20 percent greater resolution than an eight-megapixel sensor with comparable noise reduction and dynamic range.
found at http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060824/20060823005750.html?.v=1. at the end of the day canon wouldn't release a camera that wasn't better than what nikon and sony would.
but at the end of the day, I will see what the review at dpreview.com would say. they test cameras rather well and since this is an upgrade to the existing rebel then they will be doing a compare between the two.

I did come over with a job very similar to what I had back in my previous life. I left that after 18 months after realising that my boss wanted to lay back and relax in terms of sales (he budgetted 2.5% growth!) whilst I wanted between 15-30% growth (actually 50% was achievable but I always under promise and over-deliver:lol: )
In my 2nd job I though that I would retire with the company after helping it turn around from losing $1M++ per annum -- little did I know that they would make me redundant in spite of the fact that I was the only one left in sales and marketing (go figure!)

I think Glams got a family link with pro gear. I have often seen glam bid on lens, so Im not 100% sure how he sells chaper but I do know he goes overseas every now and then and brings stuff back.
Who would you buy from a Kiwi that others have dealt with or an asian you didnt know (no disrespect ment). The source of the equipment maybe the same place.

Congrats on the new gear Tony :)
I really want to get those lights you gave me working... should I just risk it with the hotshoe > pc-sync adaptor? I guess I'd be pretty unhappy if I blew up the camera tho :(
Clive - sounds like last weekend must have been fun :D

Glam sent me an email about a second hand 17-40 he is bringing in from the US. So he must buy stuff overseas to sell here.

A week ago I had a look at this thread (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=205509&highlight=rosco+gel+filters) on coloured gels to change the output colour of flashguns... and I thought that was interesting.
I ordered my "FREE" sample of the gels thinking that I had nothing to lose if they didn't respond... lo and behold, I received the gels in the post this afternoon!!! I received 2 stack more than what I requested for so there are heaps of colours to play with.
If anyone wants to have a play let me know -- I'm stll saving up for my 580EX ;-)

do the lights go off a strobe? like can your camera flash set them off?. If so then you can make up a cardboard block to fit over it and reflect the light backwards, it should still set the lights off but not be enough to hinder the image too much depending on what you're shooting. You do have to tape it onto your camera though...

E-Bay is where he is getting from. He droped the 300mm down to encourage me but to little to late.
Im glad I have supported Auckland Camera. Yes costs me a little more but I have never had to return a dam thing from them yet.
The extension tubes autofocus  The 1.4 TC is great onthe 70-200 now I need to test the Kenko 2xTC. Bigmas happy on the 30D decided not to glue it as Sandra may get into photography
Decided to go down to Tauranga during the week, to much dam rushing around to day and Sandra and the kids need to have some time togather.
Im looking at going to Karelare tommorow with the girls any one else intrested.

Thanks for the advice Mark - I don't really know, is the honest truth. All I know is that there is no plughole to stick the plug in.
I hadn't considered your way at all, I'll have to sit down and read the manual carefully.

Yep paid my AC supporters fees with my strobes as that is where they came from. Thought about using Trademe, but all unknown brands and support is a bit fuzzy.

I wouldn't buy gear on trademe that I intend to use commercially, the support from AC or WPS would be worth what little extra you'd pay.
Speaking of new toys, my new Nokia 6233 arrived today, camera and video and stuff, so I have a new toy to play with this weekend :)

Put up a question under the flash section see what answers you get back. I remember just pluging it into the pcsyn hole and presto

when we first started using digital with flashes we tested with a Nikon 5700, we used a hotshoe. so I'm sure it will be o.k but to be safe I would try the camera flash first.

Good to see you're all sorted Tony. Supporting AC is the way to go IMHO. Would be good to have joined you at Karekare tomorrow , but wedding anniversary events have a slightly greater priority! 33 years today! :D

This afternoon I was looking at the picture I shot with the 16-35 last weekend at Winter Garden. I was surprised to see a little CA near the edges of the picure: remember I'm using a 350D. Of course I purposely shot at the worst conditions (16mm, f/2.8, some trees against the sky...), but I'm worried now about how this otherwise remarkable lens could behave on a FF camera!

Well done how has she survived so long ;) Its nice to see among the group people with the ability to make one of the hardest things work. Shows what sort of people we are.
All the best to you both.
