This afternoon I was looking at the picture I shot with the 16-35 last weekend at Winter Garden. I was surprised to see a little CA near the edges of the picure: remember I'm using a 350D. Of course I purposely shot at the worst conditions (16mm, f/2.8, some trees against the sky...), but I'm worried now about how this otherwise remarkable lens could behave on a FF camera!
excellent. Now I have an excuse for taking cr@p pictures... thanks! (can you remember if the lens had the UV filter on or off?)
Ah crap
I just got the phone call from my agency, just had my contract terminiated, seems Dell is not doing as well as they would like and they are having to do some trimming, usual, contractors first
 anything else in the pipeline or would you like us to keep ear out for likely work?

Not at all! :p
Excepted for that small cromatic aberration on the edges (which, I repeat, was obtained in very extreme and unnatural conditions), that lens is absolutely amazing! :D
BTW, as far as I can remember there was no UV filter.

if it doesnt flash them then put tinfoil or white paper in the folded 'cover' you make. use masking tape so it doesn't mark the camera when you're finished, and turn your camera flash down as far as you can go, if it doesnt hit them off then just turn it up in increments, thats if you can do that with your camera flash.

A week ago I had a look at this thread (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=205509&highlight=rosco+gel+filters) on coloured gels to change the output colour of flashguns... and I thought that was interesting.
I ordered my "FREE" sample of the gels thinking that I had nothing to lose if they didn't respond... lo and behold, I received the gels in the post this afternoon!!! I received 2 stack more than what I requested for so there are heaps of colours to play with.
If anyone wants to have a play let me know -- I'm stll saving up for my 580EX ;-)
If anyone here has the need for any gel, let me know. We stock about 30meters of every colour in the rosco book, and about 50 meteres of every colour in the lee book.
We actually have an entire room dedicated to the stuff.
Let me know what you want, and its yours, free of charge.

Hey what a $100 between freinds. The last two lens I lost a total of $59 from what I paid.
You will never know a lens untill you play with it for a couple of months. The bigma is my oldest lens ;)
Last night I went through all my 20D photos and divided them into groups based on lens. The lens used the most was the Sigma 24-70.

To much running around at the last moment. Hate rushing, thats when mistakes get made. Im not as impusive as I used to be. Could be the result of wife and family
I wouldnt be suprised if my lens collection changed. The keepers are 17-40 and 70-200 the rest well you never know all depends on what I begin to focus on. The 100mm Macro and extensio tubes are a experement. The 50mm and 85mm are for portrait but no point if you dont shoot people. What ever my next lens/lenses are they will be L
I have yet to have a play with the 24-105 that may make for a great walk around lens. Canon glass never really looses it value. The 30D and Sigma 50-500 will be tested for 3 months and a final desision will be made.
I guess I want the best I can get without going over the top i.e $4k for 1 prime

The 24-105 had a build-quality rating of 9.5 on FM but price looks like a sore thumb. Feedback seems to point to a really decent walk-around.
If you're thinking of selling your auto extension tubes let me know. I'm still keen to take macros but in a more convenient fashion -- the manual tubes are alright but can get to be irritating when you need to change aperture.

sunny 16 rule? doesn't the lens/camera set up take a reading?
Ah the sunny 16 rule, used that on my old Oly alot. On a sunny day at f/16 use a shutter speed at the inverse of your ISO, so at ISO 200 use 1/200s shutter. You can move either way by stop increments quite easily too, i.e. you go to f/11 but move one of the other setting by a stop to compensate, so at ISO200, go to 1/400s shutter.
Oh and then there is the handhold rule too, don't use a shutter speed lower than the inverse of your focal length, so at 200mm, don't shot lower than 1/200s, doesn't really work on 1.6 crops though, it becomes the inverse of 1.6x the focal length, i.e, at 200mm, you need a minimum shutter of 1/320s.
So on Tonys Bigma at 500mm on his 30D, he needs to keep the shutter above 1/800s, probably 1/1000s to be safe, or if he hasn't had enough coffee  and on the sunny 16 rule taking into account at 500mm the Bigma is f/6.3 wide open, he needs to shoot at least ISO800 to maintain hand holdablity - or get a monopod.

Uh oh... there goes the marketing ploy... having the mitt on the Woman's Day mag, and the potential for winning the BBQ was to psychologically transfer the burden of cooking onto the women... so that we can kick back, relax, and wait for our steaks;)

Yeah sorry, know them, I should've explained myself better.. i thought maybe the camera mustn't link to the lens to give settings properly or something, this would be the only reason i would ever use the 16 rule, because i couldn't get a meter reading from something mid-range.

so it could be that men are in the background of the Womans Day magazine!. wow thats big!. wonder if it is really girls behind the scenes with FHM, that'd kill me :-(, I'd feel ripped

Hmmm, I have been having fun with my new toys too, had the studio strobes out, what a difference! Lovely predicable results, very little if any PP required :D
Also as I am shooting at f/8 ISO100 the results are tack sharp and completely noiseless :D :D :D I was wondering if I need to upgrade the old 28-105, at f/8 it keeps up with the best of them, saves me a new lens
Thanks Moppie for your help, may have a future taking kids shots there, you did well with them!
A few from today first attempt at studio strobes (no PP in any of these, straight of the RAW converter!)

Yep have modeling lamps, they vary with the power control as well. As for triggering I have a PC lead into one, and a optical slave hooked up via PC lead on the second (a last minute fix this morning) as they don't have optical triggers, just IR ones and I don't have an IR source

Thanks! I will PP out that line, none of these images have had any PP so far, my goal is to keep PP to a absolute minimum and get it right first time, a bit hard with a defect in the background though
Yes Elizabeth loves her snow white costume, in fact it is very hard to get her out of it!
EDIT: Opps how did I meter? Well I took a full frame shot of a grey card on Program, then took several shots with the strobes until I got the histograms to match. Final setting was key strobe on 1/2 power, fill on a little over a quarter, shutter 1/250 f/8 ISO100.

To dodgy guys in 1 sale I say. I have delt with both of them
Here is my take
The seller has mates who bring stuff in from HK/China all the time where he flicks off to kiwis and sometimes they are ok other times they are second rate or refuribished.
The buyer is doing a simalar thing but also uses a shop (pro gear) as well as buying and re selling to kiwis. He often take stuff to ausy to sell and brings stuff back.
Why do you think Glam has so much stuff to offer this group and why are so many of us buying from him. Because he is a kiwi and has cheap stuff. You want it he can get it.
The original price of the 300 F2.8 was $4500 the moment I said AC and other stuff it dropped to $3795. Based on that I wouldnt touch the guy again.
Be carefull guys. Anyone who wants to meet you to sell goods and can drop prices that much in order to get a sale.........
I would rather loose money from AC due to a bad desision on my part than be screwed by some trader trying to save a dollar. At least I can say Brought local and complete with NZ canon warrenty. Lets face it canon warrentys are international. So from now on if AC dosnt have it I will get it from B&H in the USA.
Do I have trust issues... Hell yeah the only person in this world I trust is ME. People only get 1 shot at trying to screw with me after that unless you have a death wish stay clear because you wont get a second chance.

Trademe is fine for getting a good deal, and I have but I always insist on trying the stuff, and pick up from their place. When you are looking at $500 + you want to be sure. Remember a lot of these people are just middle men. I want to buy off the real user. If people are happy for you to try and come around to their homes to pick up then they have nothing to hide. Glam on the other hand always wants to meet you somewhere.
The middle men always have NO PICK up allow 5-7 days delivery.
At the end of the day I go with my gut feeling with people. They give a lot away about themselves in answers to peoples questions.

With regard to Glam -- as long as he can supply brand new, unopened items with Canon NZ warranty I don't think we should worry. 2nd hand stuff is another story from what I'm seeing.
I trust and respect people implicitly. My motto: If you make a mistake once, it is not your fault -- move on and learn from it. If you make the same mistake again you are all to blame.:p

Heard of refirbushed lens.
Wazza is right so is Tim and now so am I. I know for many of us money is tight. It cost me $300 more to get a brand new 70-200. Cost me $400 more new for my 100mm macro cost me $300 more to get a new 30D. I could have saved $1000 from glam/trademe.
I want BRAND NEW and I will pay to know that it is. When I sell my stuff you know it has 1 carefull owner not some "yeah mate what do you want, I can get it for you at a cheap price. Complete with a NZ warrenty, where do you want to meet and bring cash"
Wazza in responce to your comment. Yeah hes was fine for a $500 item but not $4500 which got reduced to $3795. Why is his so called new stuff so cheap? Why does he deal out the back of a car?
Why does my gut tell me STAY AWAY. It maybe just me but I found out more about this guy over 1 lens and I didnt like what I saw.

That is my take on new gear purchases of any reasonable value. Got my strobes from AC after reading bad stuff about spare parts etc for the "unknown" brands, at least I have the support of a local camera store backed up by a well established importers (CR Kennedy).
Don't mind buying cheap stuff off Trademe, got my lighting stands off there, however that said, I am already thinking of replacing them, they are far too flimsy, only really good for flash guns, not strobes

Those lens prices I got from glam were only $20 less that AC. For that difference I would rather buy from a shop that I can go back to if I need help.
Having said that I am more than happy with the 70-200 I got of trade me. There are still some bargins on trademe, but they are few and far between, and there is always an element of risk when buying second hand, or new through grey market dealers. (My 70-200 (+ the UV filter it came with) cost me about $1100 less than a new one from AC!)

Would have to agree with most of the comments re Trademe, but I still can't help checking out the canon items for sale! and putting in the occasional bid. Went to pick up a 50mm f1.4 from a seller on Friday, was sold as new but when I got there it had chips on the internal glass so I didn't take it. But then again I was lucky to save $1200 on a white lens and it was in mint condition. I think the bargains are few and far between but every now and then.........................

Yep, I used my PDA screen protector for mine. I just cut it to size. There are heaps available on TM or elsewhere. If you want to go the more expensive route considering you have a 1D then there are those Hoodman thingies avaialable on eBay or B&H but the shipping kills the price....

Yes salty air. Quite windy and spray along that coastline is almost constant. The focusing is beyond comparison to the 10D. Tried following a hawk with A1 servo and it kept up quite happily. Better than I could follow the hawk!! It was too far away for a decent shot though even with bigma. Curse that 1.3 !! Didn't have time to attach the 2xTC.

If anyone is interested, I've just downloaded the 20D Parts Catalouge. PM me your email address if you want a copy -- I don't think the forum allows Adobe docs to be attached..

I also just realised that the document is password protected -- you can only print the 26 pages. The file I tried saving was "corrupted"

Fran - try adding a little contrast and saturation. Nice shot!

Just had a look at our Challange thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=202357
Im going to speak my mind. Do we all have to be so dam PC. Lets up the anti. How about we be real honest with each other without fear of standing on toes.
How many of you want to have a real challange. One where we submit a photo and we pull it to bits. No more of "thats nice" bulls&*t. If you cant handle it then dont enter. Or am I the only one who can handle been told my photo is crap.
I dont know about the rest of you but I have invested way to much money to get a "thats nice"comment.
Thats my Monday morning rave

nope, I tell myself that all the time. Trouble is working out WHY it's crap and getting something that can be done next time to prevent the crappness. I seem to have trouble with blurry at the moment, probably shutterspeed but possibly IS. Who knows?
Mini from North shore can be done from Devenport. Will see wether I'm free tomorrow...

I get the same issue with the bigma. Faster shutter sppeds required when hand held, and manual settings. Sunny 16 rule would be a good start for both of us, monopod / tripod and shutter realse cable is not always there. Lets face it those lens arnt that heavy. Try Wazzas Sigma 120-300.

yup faster shutter, use anyhting handy to rest your camera on.. fence, wall, floor, post, etc etc. tuck your holding(left) arm in tight to your body, this will still your wavering arm a bit, take a reading from something mid-colour in light and dark and go from there. or take your highest reading, then your lowest reading and set to the middle. like f2.8 - f11 then set to f6.3 if you have it. or take a reading off what you want perfect, or... :-) to set the aperture.

...oh, and yeah make sure your shutter speed is above your lens mm. this is a must!
