...oh, and yeah make sure your shutter speed is above your lens mm. this is a must!
So at 500mm I need to have the shutter speed the same. I would then have to have my ISO at 400-600 to compensate for the loss of light
MHP
27th of August 2006 (Sun), 18:06
correct, you would need your shutter set to 500 or above, I have a 500 mm on my camera now and can get 500/ f5.6 100iso. if i was shooting at the beach I would expect that to be around the f6.3 - f8 mark. if I pushed it to 200iso then I get more, but i would never go over 200 iso simply because of noise, i hat it and just wont shoot if i have to use it, I'll put on a shorter lens and walk closer. The thing with long lenses is that you need light, lots of it, you never see a surf shot taken in dull light, because the images will look total crap. so they will only shoot on a perfect day. great if you live in Hawaii :-).
Never underestimate your legs, if you can't get it with your 500mm the use another lens and get closer.
Also if i shoot with a long lens but am shooting something within range of my flash then i will use it . like a portrait with 300mm

Are you using TV mode rather than AV mode?
What 500mm lens do you have

I like what ya done with them. Tim, I am a fan of the wide one. But I am sure that's only because I like movies in the orignal format :)
Odd shaped crops can be very effective, i've found.
MHP version is better dosnt look blown out.
Yeah when I do quick processing I usually forget to protect the highlights. Simple procedure to protect them when I remember.
MHP

i always use manual, the only time I use anything else is when using long lenses with moving objects or from moving objects, in which case it depends what it is, If I need speed I'll set av to the f5.0, so that i can get as much speed as i can, although like i said, i would usually use manual so i have control over whats happening. If I was to shoot a surfer, i would need the surfer to be at correct exposure all the time, no matter what the background changes to. If I'm shooting a property on the coast from a chopper or something then I'll use the av, because it is the whole image I want to be correct and the settings can change so fast from shooting grass and bush to ocean and sky

Fran, had a 5 minute play with your pic. If it is alright with you I'll post.
No problem.
I havn't played with it myself as I took 378 photos and have got that down to 150 good ones.
There's still some of the learning curve on the 70-200 f4 to go yet :)
This is what we were doing...
I got 6-7 races in on my bike in addition to taking the photos :D

oh, 170-500mm APO sigma 5-6.3
Wish they would do a Sigma 300-500 F4 Half way between the Sigma 120-300 and 300-800.
The 120-300 is to heavy but VERY sharp the 300-800 is $8K+ to expensive
MHP
27th of August 2006 (Sun), 19:00
doesn't bother me really, I don't use this lens much, mostly sits at home in the cupboard all packed up, especially when with 1.6x crop it becomes effectively 800mm, which is way too big for anything I usually do.

Just had a look at our Challange thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=202357
Im going to speak my mind. Do we all have to be so dam PC. Lets up the anti. How about we be real honest with each other without fear of standing on toes.
How many of you want to have a real challange. One where we submit a photo and we pull it to bits. No more of "thats nice" bulls&*t. If you cant handle it then dont enter. Or am I the only one who can handle been told my photo is crap.
I dont know about the rest of you but I have invested way to much money to get a "thats nice"comment.
Thats my Monday morning rave
There are comments? I must have missed them
Anyway, I certainly don't mind criticism, as long as it is constructive - no point just saying the photo is crap, without saying a reason why and how to improve it!

Just back from scouting out my new place of work -- I always make sure where I'm supposed to be headed -- no use being late for your first day of work, it does create a negative first impression with the new boss ;-)
Tony -- I'm in regarding the challenge. I also don't think that we need to create a new thread -- the existing fortnight challenge should suffice me thinks. Also, as Tracie mentions -- cristicism needs to be constructive rather than destructive. Everyone who enters should submit pics with an open mind -- remember, "ask 10 photographers for their opinions and you will get 15..."
Mark, why cover with sunnies what I think is a gorgeous looking face ;-) How did you shoot this particular one? From what I am seeing no flash was used? Reflector? How'd you manage not to get the sky blown out?
Mini-GKPE:  I knew that I was going to start missing some things when I found work... With summer just around the corner, and the days getting longer I should be able to catch up ;)
Fran: Here's what I played with... I think I over-burned the mountain:o ... but the sky worked out well... What I did: Selected the area of sky and adjusted levels; dodged the clouds so they weren't too dark; burned the mountain (but overdid it:o ); inverted selection and increased saturation to make the grass a little greener. Saved for web, USM.

I just figured out the title :o I guess a flower isn't a sunset at raglan. Don't worry I just called myself an idoit when I figure it out.
John, I think the mountains look to dark. I am at work and are unable to edit the photo. but I would increase the contast just a tad. And just change the darkness of the blue in the sky, which will in turn make the clouds stand out.
Tony, I like that idea. at least there are plenty of those arounds :)

John, the photo was for the sunnies, they are new :-)
her back to sun, massive white reflective surface 3x1.5 mtr approx to my left about 2 ft away from me but in shaded area, fill flash 550ex manual.
f8 1/200 sec
75mm
iso 100
the rest is instinct I suppose
I can see every mark you made on that mountain on my screen, clean it up. take your time on it, use a bigger brush with a lower hardness with a lower opacity.

Erm, I'm still trying to work out how to light things properly... plus I need to build a little "reflector" to make the on-board flash fire backwards, have to find some masking tape...
I had a go just holding a bit of card up in front of the flash, but it was pretty awkward - lots of shadows in places they shouldn't be, so lots of learning still to do.

A good thing of being unemployed is that this morning, when I saw the good weather, I decided to go back to the Winter Garden in order to visit what I missed last week. Hey guys, ive been doing so research and a canon 70-200 f/2.8L lens seems to be the direction that i might be heading for sports work...
any input from you guys would be appericated and if any of you have one these, how does it handle.. ( and may be i could borrow it, before i spend the bucks;) ).... cheers Chris
GET IT. Very sharp, works well with a Canon 1.4 TC.

well the lens is a tad short at the long end. Even for field sports 200mm is still short.
I would recommend the 100-400. it does have IS with a sport mode.

The lens has got a 2 mode IS? I thought that one of them was for sports. I handled the lens at havey normens on the weeked and I saw it had a 2 mode IS.
However most of the stuff I say is wrong anyway so I could be wrong about this :)

hey Weka, I think the cropping looks better like this, it is based on the 3rds rule, with the branch leading your eye from the right. this image would only work on a third rule because of the branch that is holding the cluster, it leads the eye
