Pete, Taken me days, but I've just worked out why I'm not keen on your new avatar. On a subconscious level it messes with my braincells as it has direct similarities with a certain corporate logo...
Oh cr*p  I didn't think of that, it is suposed to be a Warhol version of my brownie, may need some tuning...

Ah just had meeting with my boss. Looking at a job share situation. I still stay IT Manager and finish at lunch and get another person in who acts as a trainner for the staff who will fix there stuip mistakes and smile at them, rather than telling them the are morons
This will give me the afternoon to do photgraphy. May look in to stock photos, any ideas on that department?

Tony - sounds like a bloody good idea to me. You might as well enjoy life, cause you only get one shot at it. If you're able to make photography your income, and there won't be any impact on your wife/family then I can't imagine what would hold you back :)

stock could be ok, there loads out there, and a couple of good books too:
here's 2:
how to shoot stock photography. by Michael Heron
The Photographers Market Guide to Photo Submission and Portfolio Formats. by Michael Willins
To photograph for National Geographic, you need to have published 3 photographic books, along with other things so I am told.
Also try publishers. see who prints the plants/flowers mags and books, find out where they get their images from.
With stock libraries search the web for ones in UK and USA. They pay more and in their currancy, all the more for you with our $. It also gives you a little leadway as they might only have one or two photographers on NZ.

YEP. Ive done IT for 8 years, time for a change. I LOVE photgraphy $20K spent this year. Now its time to live the passion.
Wife said no to glamour. I want to see NZ all of it and try to get paid to do so.
What have I got to loose?
Ive done all I can do in my current job, and I want a new challange.
I'd do my research well before making this leap. Stock photos are cheap now, with adobe stock photos, and the international image libraries. Getting good stock images will probably have to be at dawn or dusk, so that's not many per day, and lots of time on the road.
Unless you have a sound business plan and a steady income already, you shouldn't assume you'll make any money at all from photography. If you do then it's a bonus. I know photographers with 10+ years experience who are scraping by, good photographers with good business knowledge. Make sure you and your family can live on what you're sure you'll bring in, plus whatever your partner earns.
Have you read this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=207191)?
What do you have to lose? Your house. Your car. Your family if wost comes to worst. Think carefully.

Thanks Tim. In our house Sandra is the main provider at 2.5s what I earn. I would not quit my day job rather just cut back 3hrs a day.
We will see what feed back I get fro the e-mails. It took me a while to get into IT with no experence or papers but that was the challange. Photography is no different and thats why I will make it work.
What other markets are there for Landscape/ birds/ nature photographers

Tim's right, it's not something to be taken lightly. With stock you're up against some of the best photographers in the world who have been creating images with all the equipment for years and know how to use it like the back of their hand.

That changes things a bit eh?! In that case the only reason to keep your job would be just in case she lost her job? Plus it's always nice to have some income of your own.

Actually you probably have enough waterfall shots and sunset shots to put something together.
My biggest concern with trying to make some money out of photography is every second person I meet with a DSLR is trying to make money out of it

My take on it is that if Sandra earns enough to provide for the family, and you and her are both happy for you to do photography as a half-job, then there is no reason not to do it.
If you operate on the assumption that you're not going to be making any money from your photography and can still survive comfortably, then everything you make is a bonus.
I doubt theres much income in stock photography - theres just too much competition. Go for quality rather than quantity - like Mark suggested, a calendar or something similar is the way go to, IMO. Provide the whole package, aim for the top of the market. Maybe postcards, souvenir images for tourists, that sort of thing. You'll have to be a pretty good salesman as well as a good photographer to earn a living.

Identify your market and how you're unique, project sales, work out costs (and there are plenty of them). There are hundreds of calendars already produced, why would someone buy yours? Wait a couple of months into the new year and all calendars are cheap in the book stores. Plus who uses calendars anyway?

Finding that "uniqueness" will be the problem. Everyone now has a camera but I say there is still a lot of money to be had if you think beyond the square and modern conventions.
Our group has 3 Wedding photographers. I want to find something that no one has thought of that involves adventure and discovery and NO people :)

True tim. I'd imagine the real money in calendars would not be in selling them individually, but probably in selling them to corporations who send out Christmas calendars (banks, garages, etc.)
Bottom line, don't expect to make money for at least the first year or two, just like in any other startup.

What about doing studio work, not just women but group shots, familys etc. This will mean however you will have to put up with kids.

I still like the idea of the waterfalls, whereby I show people things they will never see in their life time, due to the fact it requires work to find them. I hate beaten track photos, hell anyone with a PP can get the main waterfall at Karekare you see from the road.

This is not exactly a photographic question, but seeing we have an abundance of techies in our midst I am hoping a solution to my problem might be at hand!
Scenario: 1. My laptop is connected wirelessly to my desktop pc. Under 'My Computer' on either device, the other is listed as a network drive (when both are turned on of course.) 2. I have a portable USB HD with a screen (working fine - just checked).
Problem: When I connect this portable HD (VP6240) to my laptop via USB, the friendly beepbeep tells me it has been found, and Drives J K and L appear in 'My Computer'. HOWEVER trying to click on any of these 3 drives produces the error message "Insert disc into Drive ...". I simply cannot access the portable drive contents. Device Manager tells me the portable drive is 'working properly', and is listed under the 'safely remove hardware' menu.
HOWEVER (#2) IF the desktop pc is off, and I connect the VP portable drive to laptop, it CAN be found under 'My Computer' by clicking on the icon 'My Documents' (the very icon I use to access (mapped?) for the desktop pc!) and not under drive J K or L. How confusing is that? Now, please forgive me if my non-tech-speak has confused things. If anyone can provide a solution that would be great. I would lke to access my VP drive while still netowrk-connected to my other pc.

OK I am a techie and that sounds confusing  .
My Vosonic VP3320 shows as three drives, as well, two of them are the card slots in the actual device, one is the internal harddisk.
Try this. Right click on My Computer and select Manage, then go to the Disk Manangement section under storage, see what you can see there. I have seen issues with network drive letters conflicting with local drives, it may be that.
As for why it appears under My Documents on the laptop, that has me?

I suspect like Pete it's to do with drive letter assignments.
if you get a moment, is it possible to send us a bit of a picture of what's going on?
open windows explorer (windows key + E) and do a printscreen (alt +PRNT SCRN) of a) the laptop on it's own, b) the laptop with the desktop turned on and c) the laptop with the desktop turned on & the external HDD on. You can paste these screencaptures into a word document with descriptions of what's what sure between us we can come up with a game plan... :-)

Also, starting tomorrow, we have 15% off on F&P appliances -- just for a week before prices go up. Tomorrow's the right time to pop into Hill & Stewart if you are after something. Prices are definitely going up.;)

could be a shortcut in "my docs" linking to the drives.. but i would aggree it sounds like a drive lettering conflict.. 'mange' under my computer should resovle this by relettering the drive... unless the external hdd is faulty..

I've now emailed as suggested. Along with Pete and Fran, your notion that there may be conflicting drive letters seems to be correct. Under 'Manage' (My Computer) with the HD connected, I see it has letter 'M' - the same as the drive letter for the desktop pc. I have no idea how that happened.
The USB drive previously worked ok without a letter assigned....

Iain, haven't seen said e-mail (could be anywhere by now!) but sounds like your mapped drive letter to the desktop needs to change to let the intermittantly attached HDD take up the "M" letter
What you'll probaly have to do is rightclick the desktop PC mapping and choose disconnect (write down the mapping details first you'll need them in the next step)
Then under "tools" "map network drive" remap a path to the desktop p.c (note you can choose whatever drive letter you want for this - suggest you use anything that isn't used! :-) ) hopefully once done the ext HDD can come & go without causing grief...

You know Bill gates more than likey didn't write that line of code. Now don't take this the wrong way, but I find it (sometimes) unbelieveable that people always has a go at poor old Bill. He has in effect change the face of this planet.
Sure he didn't create the personal computer, but he was the one that made it be one on every desk. If it wasn't for him where would we be? Apple prices will still be sky high, and I am sure I have never hurd of Steve Jobs saying that he wonts a apple on every desk in the world, if he did then he should have changed his bussines plan.
lets face the facts, if Bill gates didn't start microsoft the world would be different place, and more than likey computers would still be just for the geeks.
Lets also not forget what he is doing with his money. One thing is for sure he is doing a hell of alot more than any goverment is doing. And goverments have more money!
As for Microsoft, well sure windows could be better and sure there are things I would like to see changed in windows. But you know the only people that realy care the geeks. The rest of the world just wonts to do their work and go home at the end the day. perhaps check some e-mails and browse a forum/blog or two.

Bugger. I stopped doing dust testing at F32 and started using F16 because that's the smallest aperture i'll ever use in practice. In reality F12 or F8 is what i'd use, and that's only with studio lights.
I now have that f/16 rule as well, but prefer f/8 if I can (the old 28-105 is as sharp as any L zoom at f/8 :D ). It shows up a f/16 as well, but only if you look carefully and if that area is sky or something, not worth the $$$ and hassel to get it fixed

Came to the relisation that im am a baby photographer trying to get into a "mans" world with my dreams. Maybe its "learn to crawl before you can walk" time running comes after you have learnt to walk :o
Oh I also discoved a "how do you know you addicted to photography" today
How many of you drive along and look at the sun filter at the top of your windscreen and think about the effects the colours have on the thing you are looking at. Then work out what sort of Cokin filter you need to buy

Tony - the local library should have heaps of Outdoor Photographer and Popular Photography. I borrow at least 10 at a time. I am lucky to get one month old mags... Have a browse on www.manulau-libraries.govt.nz. You can actually request for a magazine to be delivered to your local library no matter where in Manukau the magazine is. There too are heaps of photography books on line.

can I network two computers via a wireless router connected to one of them? If so, is there an 'knobheads guide' on how to do it? I can get the PC to see the laptop but not the other way round.
Hope to give the new camera a small outing tomorrow. Going to photo some cycling at the new velodrome. Should be different.

Do you have a wireless router or a wireless ADSL router? I think that if you have a dedicated (like the D-Link 604T) wireless ADSL router networking is not possible. Duncan & Pete will surely jump on this.

Yep. it really doesn't matter if it's a wired or wireless network. If one can see the other then the good thing is that they are on both the same network.
what happens when the try to see the pc from the laptop? On the laptop if you click on My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network. At this point do you just see Workgroup or something else.
If you just Workgroup that should mean that both PC are on the same Workgroup. (if you have the machines on 2 different workgroups then they should be listed here) If you go in here do you see all machines on the network?

Turn off the firewalls and see if that helps.

I still think it's your flux capacitor.
How many of you guys are members of a local photographic club? I've been going to one here for a couple of years, this year I was on the committee. Because of that i've met a bunch of pros, been exposed to many ideas, and assisted a pro a few times for the experience. You also have competitions (local and national), and exposure to things you'd never hear about otherwise. I highly highly recommend it.
GKPE will be its own club with regular meetings and outings one day. Go learn how others do it so you can do better.

You don't have to go to every club meeting. My club has a new plan, pay a small amount of subs, then pay $5 per meeting. Because of them I found out about a couple of pro-only clubs which are invaluable. GRINZ is one, you guys might be able to join. Google it.

There's a big mix. Find a couple of clubs, go along and see how you like them, join if you like. There must be heaps in Auckland. I've learned a bunch. Like did you know they use to use 8x10" glass plates as negatives? The detail is just frickin amazing. 15 minute exposures. Has to be processed immediately. Makes you realise how easy we have it. The older members often have a lot they can teach you.

There is a local club out Howick way, I used to go along many years back, the interesting thing about that club was the average age - probably 50+ I did feel a little out of place. Did do some good day trips though, and good to go to the evenings and get critique on your shots. Back then though it was all slide and film, I now understand they have fully embraced digital.

Just as a test, here's one. Also a question for the techies - does anyone know of an automated tool that can identify what I/P address is on a particular Cisco switchport?
I can do this manually by doing a pingsweep to get switches arp table populated then searching the mac-address table but it's awfully tedious when doing a 500 port switch..

I used to use a Spectrum Console to do this. Does the switch ARP table show you what MAC's are attached to each port? You could use a fancy Excel Spreadsheet to do it, I have done MAC matching with Excel before, try this command out:
=LOOKUP(A1,'Sheet2'!A:B) where A1 is the MAC address, and Sheet2 is has the ARP table, column A being the MAC colum2 is the IP. Every time you put a MAC in you it looks up the IP for you!
Oh and here is a photo of a big lens to keep us on topic:

17-55 F2.8 IS with hood.
Interested if they can get Sigma 30mm F1.4
I'd only go with a reputable firm who has and will be around for a while, as I use my equipment to make a living. Unless I saved $100+ i'd probably buy locally.

Why not go Canon proud sponsers of GKPE
If canon were smart they would, lets face it were are the perfect group to endorse their stuff. All ages and economic standing. We have Rebel users, 20D/30D users 5D and 1D so we cover their full range.
The average person would listen to us after all we represent the avarage NZ consumer.
We are real, not abunch of snobs who think they are better than anyone else unlike some of these "snobs" who wont even talk to another canon user because the work for some paper.

I just got a call from a guy about stock photos, if anyone's interested take a look at their test site. The pricing model is the photographer gets 65% of the sale price, and you can upload premium images that you can set your own price for.

Shouldn't the site be a more precise, one, such as stockimages.com or whatever.. To get more hits and google rank?

Did anyone seen the POTN July $$$ spent thread?
I think it topped US$250,000 spent by POTN members around the world in the month of July.
And thats only the members who saw the thread and replied.
Members of this forum spend millions every year on photography, Im amazed Canon dosn't at least pay the hosting costs :)
So Tony, got a 30D price?

The length of a sites URL has no effect on its google rank... nor would it really have any direct relation to 'getting more hits' aside from people forgetting it because its too long.
Tim also said it was a test site, so perhaps when they launch the system they will have something nice like pacificimages.co.nz

I have a contact that can do branded gear, they have an excellent selection of gear (jackets, hats, shirts etc), they have a minimum order of $100, and have a logo setup fee. I was going to get some stuff done, I was getting three shirts and a jacket for $100!
Remember there are always issues of using the Canon logo though...
