Weka, that's a stunning image. My only suggestion is to consider taking shots that don't feature that big rock, or to make it less of a feature. That's personal taste though.

Hey John, thanks for the loan of the grip, didn't like it at first but after 300 or so portrait shots, it had grown on me :D
Makes for a heavy camera with that and two batteries in it!
Glad you found it useful.
Tony - I've heard so much derogatory things about using tobacco filters but hell your shot put the critics to shame!!! That is one great pic!

what your price on the 580ex.... i could intrested... ;)
Is as new, about 6 weeks old and never used, was bought for me buy my mum when she found out I couldn't take pics for my nephews inline hockey clubs 3 day tournament as I didn't have a flash. What she didn't know is that i didn't want to spend 3 days taking pics of about 60 games and the flash was just an excuse :o. Selling because I will seldom use it and I want the canon 400mm f5.6
Would like to get as much as I can for it pm me with any offers.

Kirst still dabbles on buying a 580EX. After all, she bought a 430EX with her camera, liked my 580EX, decided to sell her 430, and buy a 580EX>. in the meantime, prices went up, and money had to go towards other things, such as Fiji.
I have a few weddings/events over summer, that I'll need a 2nd camera body/flash.
I will hold out to the last minute.. Hoping Kirst buys something first and maybe just borrow hers ;) ;)

Dropped into Camera Warehouse in Grey Lynn and spotted a few second hand items they have at resonable prices that someone here may be interested in:
550EX @ $400 (not as good deal as Moppie's @ $300 but still not bad.)
Off Shoe cable 2 @$60 (about 1/2 the $$ of a new one)
Sigma 1.4TC $150 (I paid $220 for mine second hand from AC, they are about $330 new)

$1300 should be a good starting point. Leave it at S=R. Suggest though that you shouldn't hurry the process. Not everyone hops onto TM as often as most of us do. If it doesn't sell on the 1st week, relist with a lower reserve. Have a look also at historical prices and see where the camera sits in terms of pricing.
Good luck!

The Sigma, Kenko, Tamron TC's will mount on just about any lens.
The Canon TC's have the protruding front element.
It'll work with autofocus on anything f2.8 or faster and manual focus on everything else (unless you've got a 1d series body hiding somewhere. :D )
scotttnz
4th of September 2006 (Mon), 22:14
I'm trying to talk myself out of it because:
a) I really want to replace my kit lens, and
b) If Tony gives me a good price, and i get a good price for the 350D I still could not afford both the 30D and the 17-55 so i would have to compromise on lens quality.
What does the 30D give me over my 350D?
1) A nice BIG screen (this is probably what I would like most!)
2) Spot metering (Don't know if this is such a big deal)
3) Improved AF (I haven't had many problems with the 350Ds focusing)
4) Respect (because everyone knows that you can't take very good photos with such a small silver camera. At least it feels that way sometimes)
A 400D would give me 1 & 3 but not 2 & 4. A 17-55 f2.8 might help with 4 not that I care.
I think I have successfully talked myself out of the 30D. I'm going to get the 17-55 and wait for the 40D or 50D....maybe.....unless i change my mind again.....

So does my sigma. We tried it on Johns Sigma 24-70, which is what Mark has, and the rear element hit the TC and we were unable to zoom all the way out.
The sigma i have is very similar in design to the canon, and the one in the shop looked the same, although I did not handle it and remove the caps to look. Are there 2 different model sigma 1.4TCs?

Im getting really fussy now with my glass. Im sick of crap quality photos. You only ever get 1 chance with a photo I want mine to count.

From thos pics the sigma does not protrude any where near as much as the canon. Here is a quick snap with my Sony digicam (Man look at that CA!)
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/scotttnz/DSC03263.jpg
it still protrudes inside the mount of the lens and on many lenses (such as the Sigma 24-70) the rear lens element will hit the front of the TC, which you don't want to happen!

But 30Ds are black, and we all know black cameras take better pictures!

Also we know that a black camera means it's more of a tool rather than a toy :) plus the silver makes it look like a point and shoot.
joking aside, it's ture what Tim said. glass is more important. that's why I still use a 10D, it still takes great pictures.

Light pollution does that. Problem is that our eyes adjust to the light within our periphery. Long exposures tend to "suck up" all the available light...

John, it all depends on brand and what clubs comprise the set - woods, irons putter? I'm a golfer (loose definition, I must say, after my game today!) and know that prices can vary widely depending on the brand. New sets are regularly on special and that can affect the price of used sets. Phone JKs Driving range at the airport and check out prices for used 'sets'. Oh,and check Trademe!

Assuming that the balance of warranty is transferrable, and that the filter is decent then it looks like a good buy. Have a look at his feedback -- if there aren't any negatives in the last year then go for it.

Thanks Iain! Will check out TM. Brand-wise it is Pro-Tactic which had very good reviews when I bought the set a few years ago. The new ones I have are Honmas... This should be a good starter set I think.

Actually I reckon glass is the way to go. I went to the velodrome on Fri and was so disappointed with the results. Somewhere the 1D should have excelled. I found the glass let the camera down badly. I had it on A1 servo and just at the crucial moments the lens went hunting (Canon 75-300). Don't know whether that is due to operator though. Ended up with very blurry results. Only the Sigma (15-30) and the Canon (35-135) coped but they are a lot newer. Didn't take bigma as you can practically touch the riders. Anyway got the next lens on the christmas list (70-200 2.8L). Missus doesn't know she's buying it for me yet. Oh God, I'm getting POTN disease....my wish list is...

You can't order directly, you have to use DAC in Wellington. There's probably somewhere in Auckland too. I'm trying them for personal stuff because they're cheaper than asuka, and easier to design, given they give you layout software which is pretty dang good.

Back to basics
- Try accessing the site from a couple of other computers at his work first to confirm that it isn't his pc
- If he goes through a proxy try clearing it's cache and try accessing it from the other side of the proxy to confirm it isn't a problem with the proxy

Moppie
5th of September 2006 (Tue), 19:30
Possible, but agian unlikly.
Most forums take IP banning very seriously, because it can effect more than one member.
Its only ever done in extreme circumstances, and with the smallest range that can be narrowed down.
If you still think thats the problem then just shoot Peka or CDS, or both a PM.

For sure Moppie, but I'm struggling to work out what else it could be.
The fact that when I change my "appearance" to the site, and can suddenly get access, and the fact that I'm not having any trouble with any other site would seem to point to something at the other end, I would have thought. But then as far as IT admins go, I'm at the very low end of the scale, so any ideas you guys have is certainly appreciated!

Assuming that the balance of warranty is transferrable, and that the filter is decent then it looks like a good buy. Have a look at his feedback -- if there aren't any negatives in the last year then go for it.
I just don't like the sample pic he used:p
I have decide for the $100 I would save I would rather have the peace of mind of a new one. Then I can get an extended warranty if I want (which i probably will on this). The saving is small compared to the overall price, so unless they drop the price, I will stick with new.
I have no problem buying second hand (Both my Sigmas are second hand), but want a decent discount to offset the risk, and hassle if something goes wrong.

Indeed, $45 off is not much incentive to buy, even with a free UV filter. Re extended warranty -- do make sure to read the fine print. I've learned heaps in my new job regarding these things (we offer 3 - 5 yrs extended warranties) There are a few surprises so you are better off knowing them beforehand.

I did it. Will be the proud owner of a 17-55 f2.8 IS when my bonus comes through next Thursday. Now to update my Sig and track down a lens hood for it.
Congratulations Scott! Looking forward to seeing your pics from the new lens.

either ICMP packets not being allowed out of his machine or not being allowed into the outgoing firewall...

Hmm most corporates block ICMP, unless they are in IT services.

Cummon, show htem all the cable :D
Its a bit ugly, when I got home I had to rip all the tape off again and re-insert several of the pins.
I can see why people recoment Din plugs, those cheappo connectors I got just arn't up to it.
Fortunatly you did a bloody good job of soldering it so with a little gentle persuasion its all gone together again :)
I then filled the backs of the plugs with gasket sealant, now I just have to wait 2 weeks for it to set properly. At the moment its only set as a skin, I can use the cable, just have to becareful :)

is this a home made job?
Cardboard, plus tracing paper, plus "art" card, a little tape and some cheap tiles =
With light inside
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/Moppie/lighttent.jpg
With light out side
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/Moppie/lighttent2.jpg
Its basicaly some cardboard I had laying around, with some A3 tracing paper taped over giant window cut in each side and the top.
There are 3 flaps that fold over each other at the back, and bits of 10mm doweling running along the bottom edge to get it straight.
Its all held together with lots of parcel tape.
I have 3 flaps at the front to shoot trough, or, for the shots of the cameras I can just climb inside it.
Its about 100mm long, and about 600mm wide, and 600mm high.
I have some A3 "art" card for back grounds, some cheap tiles from bunnings to sit things on.
Total cost was about $15 or so.
The flash can be fired inside the tent, with the wide angle panel over it, or from out side, all thanks to a 1M extension lead Pete helped me make yesterday.

Hey Wazza
Sorry this took so long - and for the bad shots lol but I thought quick was best ;)
Also, the prizes in the mighty river comp would buy a nice L lens, and even the runner up prize would get you a nice portion of one :)
