Just in from a SHOCKER of an evening...
Walked the 10min to my car after work this evening, to find my car was no longer there...
What had happened in short is, I had used TXT-A-PARK as I've always done at this particular carpark on Halsey St.. (Tournament Parking).
Always using this particular code 01056 for a 12 hour park.
Well they've just changed their prices again it seems this week, was $6 a day when I started my new job, then $7 a day as of 4 weeks ago, and surprise surprise, it's now $9 a day.
So anyway, I have parked in a park further away this past couple of weeks due to $6 a day only but it was full.. And this closer one next to the new Microsoft / Vodafone building had a few spare spots surprisingly (Like 15 spots, when usually only 0-2 spare)..
So I got to the TXT a park machine, checked the code.. Yep, still the same two codes
01053 and 01056
Sent the text through to 7275, and got a message saying all done, been charged etc...
It was once I got back to the car, I noticed, normally in the past it had been say "$6.50 charge including vodafone extra 50c part", but in fact this said a flat $6, and only gave me 2 hours, instead of 12 hours till 11:45pm.
At this point I'm like ah crap.. But had $9 exactly of Gold coins. So started putting them in the machine.. $1, $2, $4, $6.. and then the machine reset itself and said 0 credit.. The last $3 coins, the machine just dropped them straight back out again.
SO I immediately phone Tournament Parking.. They acknowledge and error with the machine, and have said TXT a Park code only giving out 2 hour tickets.. (its all to do with the new price change).. And it appears instead of a 12 hour 01056 code, it's now become a base $6 charge.
Anyway, the guy said there's the issue, and tow truck drivers have been informed of the "$6, 2 hour ticket error".. I said are you sure? Said yes, tow trucks won't tow you.
So I went back to my car, 1:45pm ticket in hand, I then wrote a note on a A4 paper, saying I called the number, 021xxxxxx, at 11:50am, and advised of the error on machine, and if any problems call me 021746801... put on my business card on dash also.. And on the door..
So the tow company took the car, didn't care for any excuses, and moved my car 1km to Cook St, and charged me $200.
END OF THIS RANT.
2nd part..
No jetstream ;) Seems' mother Theresa forgot to configure something, and now we have no main phone number. .It's completely dead. They can't sort it till sometime tomorrow, and then activate at 6pm at the next reboot.
Fortunately, we have 2 phone lines, 2nd one in my room, so I'm on the DIALUP
'
Must say, thankfully Kirst saved me, even though she was already in bed! :p

I think you have a solid case with small disputes if Tournament does not compensate you the towing IN FULL. After all the admitted they stuffed up. Last one I did cost $50, well worth it.
Actually what would be interesting would be to ring the tow company and get a quote to tow your "broken down" car from point A to B, I bet it is not $200  Last tow I had from Albany to Mt Eden cost $80.

something to chear you up while your working hard, paying bills and buying camera equipment. :)
There is a dangerous virus being passed around electronically, orally, and by hand. This virus is called Worm-Overload-Recreational-Killer (WORK).
If you receive WORK from any of your colleagues, your boss, or anyone else via any means DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely.
If you should come into contact with WORK put your jacket on and take two good friends to the nearest grocery store. Purchase the antidote known as Work-Isolating-Neutralizer-Extract (WINE) or Bothersome-Employer-Elimination-Rebooter (BEER).
Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.
You should forward this warning to 5 friends. If you do not have 5 friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

For the techies:
I've got a CD/DVD burner issue, and so does Kirst.
I used to burn some blank discs with photos etc for people, with no issues. However now when I try to burn with Nero, it keeps trying to Save an Image file to the HDD and that's it.
I can't even use the default Windows burner software, as it just doesn't have it there.
On the other PC, we can select the files, right click and SEND TO cd drive, and then it will burn them on another click, I don't even get that option.
I really need to burn a couple of discs of photos, but can't do it.
The network is all unplugged as well, so can't put pics across. :(

Some sort of driver issue maybe? Do you still have the install disc? Sounds like the system thinks you've only got a reader, not a writer.

Got it in one I think.
Try this, goto "My Computer" and open up the properties page of the CDROM/DVDROM, there should be a tab for Recording, make sure "Enable CD recording on this drive" is ticked.
Failing that go into the device manager and delete the DVDROM, reboot and let Windows auto detect it again.

OK Message for car nuts:
I am looking for a single ROH Relex 14" alloy rim, or a set of four 14 inch rims to replace the set I have on my wifes car, one rim is busted and not repairable. They are 4 stud. I may even look at a cheap set of steel rims.
Oh and to keep this on photographic topic, here is a rare lens made out of Unobtainium (it is the f/1.0 not the new f/1.2):

If you do that, make sure you claim for the cost of the disputes, and the cost of the time off work to dispute their mistake. When you call up be nice, but tell them if you don't get a refund within 48 hours you'll file a claim with small claims immediately.

Warren, for nero make sure that you have selected the cd/dvd writer
http://www.cuthbert.net.nz/potn/untitled.JPG
if it's not listed then nero wont see the drive as a writer. Nero doesn't use the windows settings for this, it access the drive directly.

Battery Time?
Last weekend I did went through all my gear to check labelling and condition, of the 7 BP511's I have, only two are any good  All the others are either worn out (my genuine Canon G3 battery) or don't hold much charge because they were cheap cr*p. The two good batteries I have, one is the Canon 1390Mah I got with my 20D, the other is a Sterlingtek 1800Mah I scored from Wazza after he did an order a while back.
That 1800Mah Sterlingtek is by far the best of the bunch.
So I am thinking of getting some more batteries. Sterlingtek have the following:
BP511 1800Mah (G Series, Pro1, D30. D60, 10D, 300D, 20D, 5D & 30D) - US$11.99 each or US$22.98 a pair
NB-2LH 1100Mah (350D) - US$14.99 each or $28.99 a pair.
Postage is US$8.99 Airmail or US$19.95 Fedex. The more we buy the less the postage is per battery.
Exchange rate is around $0.64, so a BP511 is just under $19 each ex postage.
Anyone interested?

Phoned the manager of Tournament Parking.. Advised the tow guys now claiming there was no ticket there at all?
And John, the operator I spoke to is denying speaking to me yesterday.
And they said the 7 terms and conditions are there, and I shouldn't have parked there.
I explained I paid $12 in total, and used my initiative to see what's wrong with system, and was told that there was a fault, and ok to park as I won't be told..
Saying too bad... Terms and Conditions...

Ask your manager first, but I'd be inclined to send them an invoice typed up on your company letterhead (you were on company business at the time right?)

I don't think it is going to be safe for me to post any more shots here. It is much easier to be a critic than criticised, and I admire Tony for being open enough to encourage honest assessment of his shots.

I was using Duncans 24-70 so couldnt get closer to cow other wise would have moved off. The only one that is centered is the barbed wire. The Gorse goes from bottom right up. The Shed is the focus not the pole.
With the power pole im am trying to say end of life the power stops.
Advice still taken re center focus. I was out for 2.5hrs walking around.
Review of the Canon 24-70 its soft close up. Dam im getting more anal with my lens, I better try a 24-70 at Auckland camera just to make sure

Again, that makes the pole the focus.

i would've cropped like this, i have changed the perspective on this image because i would've walked into about where it now looks and taken the image. its still not perfect and i think it wouldn't be very easy to get it perfect but this is around where i would shoot it from.
sorry if this goes beyond the terms of critique, but i don't think you can get it fully perfect as it is. thats not to say that it's not a nice shot though, just need a chainsaw!

NZShrimper, let me introduce you to the histogram (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/understanding-histograms.shtml). Your 2nd effort is horribly underexposed, worse than your first.
Here's my effort, not near as good as I could do sobre, from a color photo, and experimental rather than what i'd call a final effort. I fixed the levels, did a lasso around the boy with a 150px feather, inverted the selection, use levels to apply a mild vignette, then applied a 2px gaussian blur. Then I used the lens correction filter to apply a stronger vignette. Then I did levels again to fix what I broke, and increased the brightness. Probably other stuff I forgot too. Then I applied a layer style of inner glow, normal blend mode, black, and fiddled a bit. Then I made it sepia. I took a lot longer to type what I did than to do it. Final result attached. If you reproduce with a high res image use a 300px feather and I guess a 10-15px gaussian blur.

Speaking about AC: I was there, this morning, asking how much would they value my 10-22 in case I would like trading it for a 16-35. The answer was about $400, provided my lens is in perfect conditions. Is that normal? Were they pulling my legs? I told them "no, thanks", of course. :/

"Normal" for A.C. is to offer folks approx 50% of what they could sell the gear for.
This means it is probably not the best place to offload second hand in terms of price, but on the other hand it may be less hassle than other options. I offloaded my D60 there and a couple of pretty average kit lenses, I could almost certainly got more on Trademe.

"Normal" for A.C. is to offer folks approx 50% of what they could sell the gear for.
Good to know, thanks.
Well, maybe they are happy doing so because they know that their prices are the best I can find, and so they expect me to buy the 16-35 at AC anyway... but of course before doing that I'll have a look somewhere else!

Just ordered a 17-55 F2.8 IS from WPS - $1699 including hood, a better price than Auckland camera! :) Just hope they can get one from Canon NZ before my wedding in two weeks.
Cool, just don't read any of the review that have surfaced since I bought mine. Apparently it can be a bit of a vaccum cleaner....sucks up dust.

looks like it has had little if no use, from the caps it looks like it has spent more time rolling around the bottom of a bag than on a camera.
