thats a smart idea, would be keen to try out the 24 - 70 one day to as that is on my "list" :)

only 3 lenses on the list
- 12 -24 EX DG
- 24 - 70 f/2.8 EX DG
- 70 - 200 f/2.8 EX DG HSM (or non DG if theres not that much difference)

looks like I have been swayed to the darkside of SIGMA

Ok, you can play with the lens after Moppie decides whether he needs it for his work do.

Sigma just launched the new version of the 70-200. Have a look at this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=140294&highlight=Sigma+EX+70-200)

Don't be fooled by the designation -- it simply means it can focus closer than it's older siblings. I learned that the hard way when I purchased the 24-70... I thought I could get an all-arounder + a macro lens in one.  But I shouldn't complain -- the 24-70 is a great "little" lens.;)

What's with this thread tonight? Are we going for the fastest growing thread record or something?

should I buy a sigma 70 - 200 f/2.8?

Yes! I like mine a lot. Get the 1.4TC as well and you have got a 100-280 f4.
There are a few around on the second hand market, I picked up mine, in mint condition for $700 (Non DG) + $220 for the TC.

I would like:

30D
24-105L
100mm Macro.

Wait, they are not Sigma's.....runs away shouting to Pete "Pete, your spell is wearing off"

Actually, I really want an EFS 17-55 f2.8 IS.......I am allowed to dream.....

Ah there is the problem.....Pete's last post on this thread was 5 days ago way back on page 33, and he has removed his subliminal message from his signiture! No wonder there is all this talk of canon lenses going on!

Pete....are you there.....are you ok.....speak to us....we miss you....

Yep clobbering and then some, I have been to Hamiltonia three times in the last week!

Unfortunately this may all end in tears, as it looks like this may all come to blows about a wee issue of some training I did last year, and the $5000 my employer want me to reimburse them when I leave.

I am in the process of aggressive negations at the moment, and I am about to lawyer up, as I believe they have no legal ground to bill me.

I don't get it those who know me well know I don't look to intentionally scr*w people or my employer over, it was simple, they paid me X and the market rate for my skills was x+ 50%, they had plenty of warning and only bought the training issue up after I resigned. I even had the OK to contract back to them after I leave to help them in transition, so it is not as if I was being uncooperative, and most of all Shona even baked them brownie :(

That, late nights, all the paper work and stuff setting myself up in business (got my GST stuff today), the above issue, and turning an old wasted corner of the house into my new office has had me quite busy to say the least

I wouldn't worry to much about them wanting the money for training, unless something was discussed at the time then they don't have a legal leg to stand on. Its just them being childish, sad at that level, but its all it is.

Yep that is what we think, an except from my contact:

(Employer goes here) provides a substantial investment in training opportunities to maintain its position in the forefront of the industry. Under the training policy you may be required to reimberse some of the costs of your training should you leave the Company before fulfilling the program of obligations you have agreed to for a given training program.

Now firstly they sent me on the training, secondly I was the most experience in the product (in fact the only one at all), thirdly no agreement or anything like the above was signed or discussed prior to the training.

They do say they have a separate policy that apprantly I signed that said they can seek reimbursement within 12 months of the training, but it is not part of my employment contract.

At the moment this issue has gone all the way to the CEO, as I pointed out that if they bill me I will not be assisting them in any way post the 17th (my last day).

Grgghhh

Moppie
8th of March 2006 (Wed), 03:03
If they have an agreement, well then you are in a little trouble, but they have to provide it first, and it has to refernce the training that you did.

Good luck with it.
You can always contract back to them, and charge them a "little" more for the work ;)

Grgghhh

Something fishy here... Just imagine if an employer chose to send an employee on an expensive training package (o'seas..), it would be a convenient way for them to ensure that employee had to remain with the company, wouldn't you say? Might be different if you requested that training - I can understand the need for the contract in that case.

If it's written exactly like that, I'd suggest they seek, and you hide...

Must add that I've seen clauses that allow for percentage reimbursement of training costs on numerous occasions - but have yet to see any cases where this has been successfully applied. Stick with it Pete, they're only digging themselves a PR grave by persuing this line.

We have come to a "Gentleman's Agreement" on this. I am happy with the outcome, we meet half way on the bill, and I work it off at 20 hours of non billable time over the next few weeks. This works out quite OK, as I am billing for a whole week with the new position from day one, so this is effectively unpaid overtime. I could get dirty and fight it out, but I am not 100% sure I would win, I am much happier with this situation, at least I leave on a good note, and get to keep all my course material!

iKirst
8th of March 2006 (Wed), 18:08

:D Amazing what an extra gig of RAM does:D

I found a supplier in our neck of the woods -- very friendly people. Offered me newer and cheaper RAM (Legend) that was backward compatible to my system. Apparently the older RAMs cost more... maybe because they're no longer manufactured? This finally allowed me to install CS2.

Now all I have to do is convince Tina that we need "broadband":D The supplier was offering a Linksys(?) wireless router for $168... and a D-Link one for $165. The Linksys is apparently more stable than the D-Link... A Linksys PCI wireless adapter(?) for my son's PC is $68... Hmmmm...

New toy arrives next week :) Decided to try the canon ST-E2 to trigger my 3 speedlights. Spent last week doing portraits with 580 on camera and tripod hated it, lacked freedom to move around.

If its no good THEN it time for Alien bees. This will bring my "Studio lighting" up to a grand total of $1800. Thing I like about the alien bees is a)modeling light b)mains power c)add-ons and attachments.

Getting the hang of flashes, and how to position them, getting hang of the "M" settings now all I need to focus on is posing the model correctly

The speedlights provide enough light for my lounge so the only issue is when the cameras in portrait as the ST-E2 only has a 30 +- degree range.

Wazza wernt you after my setup in March???

Posing's the hardest part!I do like my 'bees, they put out a phenominal amount of power - though i'd have liked AB1600s or better for the last wedding I did. I was getting F7.1 @ ISO100 for groups of up to 12 people, but i'd have liked F8 or F11... but I could've always bumped the ISO if I really wanted it. The detail you get when you have that amount of light is great! I had one girl in a group of a dozen that I could tell has dandruff!

Anyone planning to shoot the Pacifica Festival over the weekend? I was thinking of going along, but not sure if I can be bothered fighting the crowds.....

I feel the need to use my camera over the weekend, anyone up for a sunset/night shoot tonight?

No one came for coffee

So instead I decided to test all my glass @50mm from f1.8, 2.8, 4.0, 5.6, 8.0, 11 and 16

Sigma 24-70
Sigma 50-500
Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 18-55 Kit

Interesting results learnt alot.

Next lot of tests will be based on the Bigma against a 70-200 and if possible 120-300.Oh I forgot Canon 100-400

Get to know your glass and its limitations, it will save a lot of dissapointment.

Wazza

Heh, not sure about those light stands.

And with this lens, I know anyone hear could cover the insurance excess with an accidental drop or what not, but it's the thing knowing there's no 120-300 available in nz new at moment, and repair would take weeks I would assume.

Weddings have been great.
Posted another one up in wedding section

Really I wouldn't mind so much in having it borrowed, as I owe many people a return favour, such as Duncan with his 100-400L on 3 occassions it's been borrowed.

So a test.. Conditions today aren't so favourable. Might give an unfair advantage to a 2.8 lens. On a sunny day, I know the Bigma can do great results. :)
