17-55 at F6.3, 1/10th hand held, 100% crop. Doesn't seem all that sharp to me, but at 1/10th not too bad.
I can hand hold this thing to about 1/10th at 55mm. So far I like the lens, but it hasn't blown me away. Did a focus test and thought it was off, but turned out to be my technique.

However, Amanda is now back in the country, so Im happy again :D
And! she came back with a 58mm UV filter, which will fit a sigma 70-300 DG Macro. All I have to do is a wait a little longer before I can use it......
(The 550 however has seen lots of use on Duncans 20D in the last couple of weeks, it was an Awsome buy!).

You know that you calibrate for the ambient lighting at the time, so if you calibrated it under natural light, then go home and edit photos in the evening under artificial light, you will need to recalibrate.
That is why I do all my editing at night.

Not sure about Spyder but that's what you're meant to do for Moncao. I'd recommend having a good read of the manual. I haven't read the moncao manual, but my system and prints match, and I have read the whole Bruce Fraser color mangement book. I skipped over where I talked about Spyder but could have a look for you if you can't get this to work.

Good on you Tony! I feel the same way. I dropped into AC on the way home today to get a filter for the 17-55 and couldn't find anything else I want.
On the filter. I went to Camera Warehouse on Queen St and they wanted $85 for it. Exact same one at AC was $57. I really should give up on going in to those Queen St shops, their prices are just silly!

Nah the bigma will do the job now that I have learnt how to use it with TV mode.

Yes, in most occasions, but not always. For instance, the 1DIIn is $200 cheaper at Camera&Camera, Queen St, than at AC (I don't know if Camera Warehouse sells it).

I am yet to find Camera and Camera cheaper than AC, and when I have asked them they will not match AC. Some examples:
17-55 C&C $1999 AC $1620
Crumpler Backpack C&C $369 AC $259
60mm Macro C&C $849 AC $690
All of these prices I gave C&C the opportunity to match AC because I work in the city, they would take a bit off, but they would not come close to matching AC. It's not like I was wasting their time, I went on to buy all of these items, and I could think of more examples. As Moppie mentioned, AC will also price match.

AC seems to be the cheapest bricks and mortar store for most things. Some of the online shops are a little cheaper at times, but I prefer to shop somewhere I can walk in and play with the toys, unless there are big savings to be had. I also find AC staff very helpful, even the blind guy that served me today.

Went to the local kart track to put the 1D through it's 'paces' and play with settings etc. After my velodrome problems I found out the 1D has 5 AF sensitivity settings (std, slow, moderately slow, moderately fast, fast) I found the camera was on std. Wacked it up to moderately slow and what a difference. Also used Tv mode for the first time which made a huge difference.(as opposed to always Av or man). My other problem was the lack of shutter lag. Ended up being a bit premature on a few shots. Played with AWB as well. Sorry Weka, but the horizontal hail kept me in the car so I couldn't tell you how good the weather sealing is !!! There's a 13 frame burst in there (1.5 seconds) and when I went to 'chimp' the camera was still writing. I found it was writing to both cards as a back-up. Soon sorted that one.
Now, the problem with looking at the final pics is, they still aren't as sharp as I would like (most with bigma). Time for some L glass I think.

AC is where I got my 10D from. 1k less than the RRP. good bargan at the time.
i am banned from the camera shop at the moment.. (wife imposed)
So there might as well be no shops here...

Wasn't worried about the camera but I was freezing my nuts off and didn't want to get wet as well. The pissy drizzle wasn't a problem but the driving pin sharp hail !!! I also think I've found a new motorsport...kart drifting.

He is not really blind, just needs new glasses I think. He has to hold everything 3cm from his face to read it. Funny to watch! I wonder if he still takes photos:rolleyes:
That'll be Ken - I remember him from Wellesley cameras by the Civic, whch has to be some 20 years ago. Nothing wrong with blind folks though, I go to a physio sometimes who is completely blind.

Hi Simon
I run Gallery software on one of my 'other' web sites. It is installed for users to be able to share pictures with other users.
I, too, had a problem getting Gallery 2 settled down and then even more of a problem allowing the permissions for the users, so I reverted to Gallery version 1.5.4 which was much easier to maintain in a multi user scenario.
For my own picture gallery that I use to store my own pictures, I downloaded and installed Pekkas EE software and found it to be a great tool and not at all difficult to install. He is about to release Version 2 of the software and I will be trying that out as soon as it is officially released.
Hope this helps.

Simon, decent enough setup, a bit busy for my tastes. Photos could use a bit of brightness (if RAW) or the middle slider moved up a bit (JPG) IMHO.

Yeah it is a bit busy. That is one of the things that i am looking at changing, make it a simplier style. Will take note of the brightness issue. I was trying to capture the true feel of the day which was overcast and then torrential rain, maybe that was the wrong thing to do.

Clubs can take a while to reply - everyone's a volunteer. You're probably better off asking at a meeting.
OK, they are volunteers, so their efforts are much appreciated, but receiving a reply to my eMail about membership after 10 days, without answering it seems completely useless in my book!
Anyway, Wednesday night there will be another meeting: I'll ask there again. Maybe. I wanted to join APS for the contests, but now it's too late. :(

I also find AC staff very helpful, even the blind guy that served me today.
Ken!
I don't know why, but he served me *every* time I went to AC.
I still remember with pain my first purchase, when he had to enter my data on their database. The entire operation took about 15/20 minutes. Later I discovered that now (and for ever) my surname is Corsolimi (instead of Corsolini), according to the computers of AC!!!

i agree, were you trying to match their logo font?. I would've probably only done the 'storm' in that font and the rest in a formal one, much like their flag, and probably starting on another line, but you know them and what they want so...
pity you couldn't get the full logo?, or take a photo of the flag and photoshop it onto the boarder.

yeh, do as i'm told :)
Makes life easier, most of the time.
I personaly dont like set photos (or tripods) and would like to have done a more radical
pic, then could have had fun with the new logo, font and layout. but that takes time and persuasion also this was just done as a favour.

piks fine as far as sports teams photos goes, I like the goalie lying down, suppose thats normal though for hockey teams? I don't mind the gradient, it fits with their logo yellow fading into white and back. glad you did it with blue and not yellow. still i would've taken a pik of the logo/flag and put it in the top corner or bottom right or somewhere. it would take 5 mins and be worth it for future shoot possibilities beyond favours.
anyway, nice job and they'll like them for sure.
edit: we used to do these on the ships a lot, I'l see if i can find dig one up....

Was more worried about the quality of the pic than the layout, as i'm not used to taking still indoor shots. The images were not as sharp as I had hoped for, dont know if that was me or the lens or the lighting or a combination of all.

if you used any type of flash with them, and the ss was at or above 1/60th with f8 or above, and your cam was on a tripod, and you focused on the kneeling row, and you kept the zoom below 50mm, then it should have been fine. so must be your lens ;-)

Yep Scott and Myself, I think we were the youngest there by about 10-15 years :)

Yeah, it wasn't bad, they guy talking was pretty funny, but it did drag on a bit. I'll try it again next week for workshop night, then I would have done the whole month cycle with the 3 different types of meetings. I get the feeling that to get much out of it you can't just go along casually. You need to get heavily involved, enter the compititions, let the judges rip your photos to bits and take notes.
It appears that you have to make an effort to break into the group. They don't smoother you, and I need to make more of an effort to talk to them. Maybe the age thing is as much a barrier for them as me.
I really want to like it, I think I could learn a lot from the club, so I am going to go again, and I might join up (only $60ish I think) so I can enter the competitions etc.
