Cool Sig Pete! Is that one of the new features?

It is a Proof of Concept, I need to be careful using it, I could get in trouble!

Actually there was a new feature that allowed images in sigs accidentally left on, I posted in the forum section about it in the same way I just did, got a PM from a Moderator saying "remove the image, no images in sigs!"

After going to all that trouble testing the sig, I had to use it at least a couple of times, it is really just am image in the body text, with the normal signature turned off

To everyone - Whats the origins of your nicknames?

I think my is obvious. at the time I joined I didn't know if I was the only nzer around. I kinda figured that if I had NZL at some point I would find others like me in NZ.

+ I never had a nick name when growing up or even at high school. However just a few years ago someone did give me the nick name muthbert.

so what does yours mean.

FlyingPete

he's just trying to be smart. He's just using one image as the sig.

The new feature (now disabled) allowed 100x400pixel images, a cool idea but not going to be enabled.

So what really is the difference other than convenience using an image at the end of each post instead?

Now back to the regular sig:

Perhaps they figure it might tax the server to much. Just think of the load times of some pages if you have got people loading images and loading sigs. I am sure some smart person might create a animated one. Which then people could use for advertising.

To everyone - Whats the origins of your nicknames?

We started off a business a few years back -- my wife and I wanted the business to reflect the names of our two boys (David & Gabriel) but things didn't sound right... until I thought of David & Gabriel's Corner -- hence dgcorner... and it stuck since...

!#$%^&* bloody IRD:evil: 10 weeks on and still no refund cheque!

I gave them a call this morning and they promised to get it sorted within the week. I wanted to tell them what I though of all their red tape and BS but thought better of it -- I might have to wait another 10 weeks "because the paper work disappeared!"

While I'm at it...

Crappy Telecom/Xtra sent me a note saying that I am unable to experience the top speeds they offer because of the wiring/distance of my house to the exchange. I now have an average of 405kbps when the speeds should be at 2mbps. They gave me 3 options: 1) continue (paying) as is; 2 revert to dial-up; or 3) terminate the service.   This is what happens when a monopoly exists.

I've got a freebie four day junket to Taupo in a few weeks. Have half a day off to do whatever I want. So...anything in or around the Taupo area that lends itself to having a camera pointed at it? I'll have no or limited transport and I'm not taking photos of the 'hole in one'.

Grgghhh, we could probaly have a post as long as this rambling thread with IRD/Telecom crap.

Some ISPs still offer good 256K services, try Orcon for instance.

Thanks Pete. Will be doing the rounds tomorrow to see who can offer the best bang for buck... the only drawback is telling everyone on my mailing list that we are changing ISPs and email addresses again.

How's Shona and the wee one doing? I'm sure Elizabeth feels like a big sister these days. You home tomorrow?

I am with Orcon. They are not bad. They had problems when I signed up a few years ago. Telecom wasn't playing the game but these days I don't have a problem at all. The only thing I don't like about the connection is the speed. I would like faster :)

We may have enough 70-200 f/2.8s to make a table? Well we should have when John finally gets his tax rebate!

Here is a way to curb camera spending (well this is what I do anyway!), I did a whole pile of product shooting work for a website, the money I made and selling my old EOS30 body gave me enough $$$ to buy my 20D kit, already had the flash a better walk about lens and a telephoto. From that point I decided to only buy stuff with money I make from photography, and selling old bits, that's how I got my 70-200 f/2.8.

Unfortunately I am "in the red" at the moment with my recent studio strobe spend, but then I put it though my company this time, so GST back and 39% back at the end of the year, so it only cost me half :D And that is half paid off already!

Be a while until I can get that EF1200 though :(

Ive got all I NEED now. The want list goes for miles. Yes I have come to the conclusion that I need to make some money before I buy any more glass.

The bigma does the job with the 30D so why do I need to buy primes.
Mind you at least my stuff doesnt get dust.

How much is your pbase account? I would recommend that if you wont to start selling some photos then your own domain name would be best. However using your nick I am not to sure. Unless you make it a company name. Then you could come up with Weka2k or something.

I guessed that part :D Can you tell I made it to Uni?

The url doesn't have to tell what you're about as long as its memorable. I'm sure when you create the site that you'll optimize it for search engines, so people will be able to find it without knowing how the url relates to the content.

I'd assume that most of your initial visitors would probably be visiting the site after you direct them to it with a business card or on the back of a print or whatever, so they're already going to know what you do.

The job's going very well. My only gripe though is that the day goes by too quickly :D

A home theater system may be the way to go if you are still happy with the resolution of your current one. A Sony one can be had for as little as $600.00 -- DVD included. There is however another new Sony "wireless" system which includes a 5 DVD disc changer... that one goes for (if I remember correctly) $1400+. Note though that the "wireless" applies to the rear speaker which is connected via infrared.

We're also clearing a Sony 32" LCD Bravia for $2999 (originally $4999) This has been the floor model for the last 3-4 months. Given a shelf life of 60K hours that will leave you with some 19 years at 8 hours of TV a day -- not bad if you don't mind a showroom item. Comes with your standard 12 month warranty. 5 year extended warranty is around $199.95

Anyone for a Sony 60inch rear projection plasma for $4999? One floor model available. This one is really a fantastic bargain.

I think the "life" around the house has a lot to do with it, when Shona and Elizabeth go down to see mum/granny it is a novelty for the first couple of days, wears off quickly though.

When it was just Shona, she used to go to the States on work for three weeks at a time, took me a bit longer to get that way when there are no kids involved.

dgc - you really are a salesman,,, hmm the Sony 32" LCD Bravia would look good in my lounge.. and $2k off the retail... ill discuss this with the wife..

Chris, did I mention a 32" JVC one for $1999? I wouldn't recommend it though... looks really beat up but a good clean might make it look its original worth. The new Sony Bravia looks really good -- www.sony.co.nz (http://www.sony.co.nz)

dgc, I was looking a 42" myself. but only at 3k tops. I think I will be going for speakers. I like movies and don't have any sound setup at the moment. I will be spending 3k on that too :)

I'll keep an eye out. We have Yamaha systems with Wharfdale speakers that sound really good considering we don't have an audio/video room. I'll have a look at other systems too. The Sony is not to my liking -- too tinny... but probably lacks a sub-woofer to get the bass going.

I am not a great fan of sony. for the speakers I was thinking of B&W speakers etc. I would like some speakers that don't take up much space.

Did any one watch that pro photographer thing on closeup. I found it intersting. the main thing that I got out of it is the use of light to create depth with in the photo. It's not something that I have thought about before. Normaly I would use DOF to create the focus of a photo which also creates depth.

The older stuff was taken with the 90-300 usm, which was really soft comparied to the sigma. The thing I noticed with the sigma was how sharp it was comparied to the 90-300.

Actually I don't think any of them have fans, i'd like Petes opinion on whether they're necessary or not.

Here's my suggestion for what to buy. Enclosure (http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpecification.aspx?ItemID=347106), Seagate IDE 320GB drive (http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpecification.aspx?ItemID=348160). Make sure if you get an IDE enclosure you get an IDE drive, SATA and IDE aren't compatable.

cool cheers for that. I'm thinking the fan probably isn't a huge need, as I do all the work off the front HD, then just save everything to the external as i go, so max would only be up to 10gb at a time, mostly only up to 5gb.

One last question, I figure all of these are Mac compatible?

As far as I know, HDD's are one of those few things that work the same between different platforms. You could check with the shop, but I think as long as you format it on the MAC, you won't have any problems.

Checksun and PBtech are both just down the road from where I work, if you need some help I can meet you at either of them during lunch, I can then use a variety of trade accounts at checksun :)
While we are there you can buy a proper PC as well :p

One last question, I figure all of these are Mac compatible?

Like moppie said, that shouldn't be a problem. One of the guys that I used to work with had mac. He used my hdd inclosure on his machine with out any problems and I use windows.

Yup one of them :-D

yeah, didn't think there was any probs but thought I'd better check first, haven't heard of any probs but i do know that some externals are more built for them. maybe just their marketing ploy.

Thanks Moppie, might take you up on that next week, I'll see what NZShrimper comes up with later today too. I just had a look at pbtech, and by buying seperately seagate and a cheap housing it still comes to approx $275.00 and the ones on trademe are $230

it is 16mb cache though.

cheers all

First Battery order is away, had to break it down to avoid GST, will do second order tomorrow, so there still is time if you have missed out!

You might like to ask they're shipped seperately otherwise they might combine them. Or wait until one says shipped before making 2nd order.

I'd be a fan of buying them both from the same place too....

I have a 250Gb drive that won't run in the enclosure I've got - it runs fine everywhere else and okay in other enclosures. Other drives work fine in the enclosure I've got too so haven't a clue as to why they both don't work together.

Has anyone got a good reccomended place for getting thank-you cards (with baby photo ;) ) printed?
I've looked at Frogprints but vaguely remember someone saying the quality was not too flash.

cheers.

So you get these 320gig HDD's you store all your data on to them how then do you back them up?

my backup is simple, copy the files to another hdd (which is getting full) and back them up on to DVD. The DVD's are stored in a dark place away from the sun. but I don't have any off site copies. So if I go home tonite and find the house burnt down then I am stuffed.

Amen brother!

Someone was telling me about a LaCie product with 2 harddrives that can be configured to mirror.

Copy to a 2nd drive & burn to DVDs stored off site is a minimum IMO.

Hmmmm.....beter update my off site DVDs tonight.

Bugger :(
Auckland Camera won't have stock of the Manfrotto 676b until December.
Photo.co.nz don't either and say the Manfrotto agency has changed hands and it's difficult to get things at the moment.

I am going with plan B on that, don't want them going through customs at the same time.

I had to do a double take when I read that.
I should hope we all know what to think about Plan B.
