Whats a backup I thought that was something IT people never do :)
This is a public announcement:
I will have no sympathy for anyone who looses all there photos to a drive crash, you all have been warned and should know better :D
I hear this all too often, I had a near miss the other night, and I have a fanatical backup regime. I have also had two drives in a RAID pair fail within a few weeks of each other, I recently had to spend several days recovering a customers mail servers after they lost two drives in an array within minutes of each other, then they lost the backup server and disk backup as well an hour later (power spike).
As it has already been said here, spinning bits fail, disks get scratches and anything with a file system can get corrupted.
EDIT: Some shock tatics for you all:

EDIT : Email arrived .. not a great deal drive not all that and the price only 10 bucks cheaper.. stick with the Seagate much more reliable.

Use swahili Windows, they have a bigger alphabet, pronunciation is a little harder though
Actually the real answer is mount points, drives appear as folders in existing drives, but that doesn't sound as cool

are these all maps to other PC or drives on your PC. The other thing is do you have an on board card reader with 6 slots... ( hp were good a throwing these in each slot takes up a drive letter.)
if some o the mapped drives are to folder within your PC they can freed up. if they are to another PC then check that you are not mapping to folders on the same drive. as you can just map to the drive thus freeing up more letters.

As for wish listed, at the top is a new car. I have been saying to friends and family for the last 3 years that I need a new car. well still havn't done that yet :( and no money isn't the issue.
I would like to replace the 10D. On the lens factor nothing really stands out as a must have. I am coming up to AC this saturday (time unknown) so I will be getting a new bag but I can't think of anything else I need.

Actually I don't think any of them have fans, i'd like Petes opinion on whether they're necessary or not.
Opps Shona just pointed out I missed this one :o
Fans and drives, depends, Seagates are OK without fans they have nice cool bearings, would always fan cool Hitachis, and anything over 7200rpm. If no fan make sure the drive case is metal to disperse the heat, and keep it well ventilated. Heat kills drives.

I thought they were more like a shortcut? I Linux, what I would refer to as mount points is just normal as they don't use drive letters, i.e. my Linux server has two logical drive in it, a 750GB RAID5 array, and a 80GB SATA Drive. The root or / is on the RAID5 array and is only 8GB, and the rest of the partitions are other mount points such as /tmp. The SATA drive is /iso.
In windows I could do the above just using a C:/. I would format C:/ as 8GB, then format up the other partitions, and link then to folders in the root of C:/ including the SATA drive, which would be C:/ISO. Becomes a pain working out drive space though

The agenda:
Take some photos
Buy some more 11x14" frames, for the 12x8" photos + matts which I have to put together
Take framed photos into Bergerac cafe
Update my resume, send it into a company ;)
(I've had enough of parking in town.. and I tried the bus the other day, and felt sick.. $5 as well)
Parking has gone up 3 times in 7 weeks. Initially was $6 a day, then became $7 a day earlybird and $9 after (but I start at 12:30pm).. so always $9
Then couple of days ago, as from this Monday, it's going to $8 earlybird, and I think $12 a day for anyone else...
Also add on the fact I've lost $200 for having my car towed, and waiting for a response from the company.
And the fact it's summer, and I can't see any sunsets, as I work till 9pm..
And more importantly, I only get one quality day a week with Kirst (Saturday).

nothing is ever what it seems Wazza, you can live your life 2 ways, positive or negative, choose the earlier, and kick yourself up the butt when you are thinknig the later. you have friday night and all day saturday with Kirst, it's your choice whether you wish to spend any of this time sleeping. it's also your choice to spend it wisely and appreciate it.
expense is everywhere, non avoidable. the grass is always greener.... but then it never is. live is a dream- you create your own reality, what ever you wish to create can easily be done, you just got to want it.

Funny that, I have been working from home for the last 6 months, you would think it would cost less, but I am looking at being better off working in town again
The reason? Well I am out almost everyday anyway, so no petrol saving, I am in town a couple of times a week and I don't get the early bird, I get the $30 rate  Everyone I talk to has a mobile or is in Australia, so there is $400 in phone/cell a month, permanant VPN setup here over my DSL connection making sure I get hit with at least to excess data charges every month, and it goes on...
Next week I work in an office in Newton, so free parking, only a daily commute, most people I am dealing with are in the same office, or I use one of the office lines, so bye bye sell and toll bills!

The job I'm looking at heavily relates to photography. And that's my eventual career move, so why not get my foot in the door. :D (of course I can't take a 50% pay cut), but 25%, sure I could manage.
no job is crap unless you think it is, society's trick is to be 'better', in job, in life, in whatever. seen any happy rich people lately?. living their dream job in the heights of the office heirachy. woohoo well done!!
It IS 90% attitude totally. no I aint losing it or a depressive, I've lived the life I've wanted all my life, and proud of it, I would'nt give a toss if i lived in a caravan, but thats just me.
life is what you want it to be, if it is photography, then do it, so you lose a bit for a year or 2, so what, what you gain will be beyond that in life enjoyment, and in long term monetary gains. survival is mans first.

I make the most of my job, I enjoy it, I get a laugh and a smile out of some customers reactions, when they're trying to avoid me. My first 4 weeks were painful, but since been rather happy. The only downside is it isn't photography related, and parking issues, the cost of parking, and there's very few.. Some days there's none around, and have to keep pacing until someone leaves. With Microsoft building just finished, it's a load busier, and Westpac Viaduct branch will open in 2 weeks. Ahh welcome to Auckland city parking nightmares.. I would catch the train, but the last train leaves at 8:22pm

Aww that sucks Peter.
When I worked at Westpac, I had free parking, and was just 2 km. At lunch I would drive home, and go online, have a cheap lunch.
But i just don't like making food to take in, so I end up paying town rates for food at the bakery, or McDonalds. :(
Hmmm forgot about the lunch thing, that will put expenses up a little
Doesn't really suck that much, I am quite looking forward to this one after the cr*p I have had from the PC vendor rhyming will smell.
Shona is going to miss me at home, she is not looking forward to next week. At the moment I get up and give Elizabeth breakfast, often dress her and take her to Kindy, that and the "I need to pop out for 15 minutes, keep an eye on Elizabeth", and the morning tea ritual of "yucky" coffee for daddy (aka real coffee) and yummy coffee for Elizabeth (aka milk fluffy), or sitting on my knee in the office watching Moby music videos when I have some spare time.
OK I will miss working from home :(
EDIT: Oh and the world domination thing will have to go on the back burner for a while

Cant or wont? Years ago I took a 10k pay cut 1/3 to get out of Horticulture to get into IT. I had kids and a morgage. What I lost back then I have made up for many times over.
And
Im a doing what I enjoy compared to what I had enough of. I am going through a nother change now where I am ready to find a balance between IT and Horticulture (been out doors).
I still have a morage and kids. I still only have 1 life and I will NOT focus on whatI will loose rather I will focus on what I will gain.

These are very wise words indeed. If you ever read a book on motivation they will say the same thing. At least here it's free :)
What you have said is why alot of people stay in jobs they hate. because they have the morage and the kids and don't believe they can do with less than what they currently earn. But like anything we always increase the spending to match our pay.

Speculate to accumalate. To come up first you have to go down. Or sayings like that. I took a 10% pay cut for a job I thought I would like. I did, for a bit. Then ended up going back to my original job and now love it. But I had to make that break.

the only thing I need to figure out is how to increase my confidance
Believe in yourself and tell the rest of the world to go to hell.
"To thy self be true"
Confidence comes from a belief in ones self, that is not swayed but others opinons. It is always with you and is not dependent on others to help hold it up, to do so would make you no better than a ship with out a rudder...blown all over the place. You wake each morning look in the mirror and tell yourself you are OK. Accept your weakness and know your strengths.
If you dont believe in yourself no one will. Dont blame the world for you plight. Everything comes down to YOU. You will hold any key to failure as well as success.

Geez... Either I am lacking in ambition or just lucky. I like my job :) I have been working at the same place for 13 years (my first full time job), so am now at the top of the pay scale (but am working on getting more qualifications), but I don't even think of leaving - even though there would be better paid jobs out there!
I like the job, like the people (although of course there are days where I could cheerfully strangle them), and I get to get out and about, and get involved in different things all the time.
Here is a link to my work's homepage http://ecology.massey.ac.nz
Now, someone (sorry too lazy to look back and see) a few pages back was asking about photo opportunities in PN? Umm... I am still thinking :P Na, it depends how far out of Palmy you want to go, the Manawatu Gorge can throw up some nice pics, as can the windmills, and the Esplande in town looks pretty nice at the moment with all the cherry blossom around (although it might be gone by the time you get here).

Kudos to you for having one job in the same place, have never been able to get my head around that one, although at times I've tried. eventually realized it isn't for me no matter what the job or $$ or security. not complaining though, I've spent the past 18 years living like a hippie travelling the world. 4 yrs of it on cruise ships, if you want a job on one just holler, call it done. if you want any information on what its like, just holler, that'll cost you coffee;-), you'll make good money, you'll also be able to shoot anything in any situation without second thought, it is beyond words the photographic/business experience you'll get from it... you'll also see some awesome parts of the world and meet some awesome people. all food and acc paid for. being a photographer is probably one of the best jobs on a ship in terms of being able to go where you want etc.

Bugger - forgot my picture was on there - I prefer being behind the lens! That was not a nice piccie either LOL.
I am a bit of a homebody though - I like my friends and family too much to disappear for long periods of time (years).
I have thought about doing almost the opposite fo cruise ships, and doing a 6 month stint in Antarctica as a domestic - now the photo opportunities there are endless :) The best part is I can do it without losing my job here - you can take a 6 month leave without pay, then come back and carry on :) Either that or mug the next person from here going down for a month or so for research and go in their place ;)

Antactica is still a frontier that I wish to conquer before it gets destroyed by human nature.... one day. I think after 6 mths you might be like "oh man gimme a tree to photograph, no more seals and penquins paaleeeaaase!" but it would definitely be TOTALLY AWESOME!!. The new glass is great! So far I am very happy. It is sharp, fast, and the IS is brilliant. It is an excellent low light lens! It appears that one has to be carefull with flare when shooting into a sunset or similar, but overall I am very pleased.

Hmmmm, you are probably gonna want more than I will pay, considering all I want is the lens mount and mirror box.
I actually have an EOS 500 and 28-80 USM I could use, but it seems a shame to break a working one. I would rather pick up a broken one for next to nothing and use that.

Anyone got a broken old EOS and lens? I'm thinking of doing this:

You could get a cheap teleconverter & use the mounts - or extension tubes?
