Just bid $6 for a crappy old, half working EOS 500. No lens though, still looking for one.

Hmmmm, you are probably gonna want more than I will pay, considering all I want is the lens mount and mirror box.
I actually have an EOS 500 and 28-80 USM I could use, but it seems a shame to break a working one. I would rather pick up a broken one for next to nothing and use that.
fair play.. it does seem such a waste to bust it up.. the project looks fun though but not for i don't have the finger dexterity.
It would drive me insane.. (hang on to late kids have beaten me to that)

http://www.pbase.com/weka2000/waterfalls_2006 go to Karamatura
Waterfall season started early  . Time to get some tramping boots my shoes I was wearing are destroyed. This is rough country. Mind you not that I ever stick to the track.
Morning best for this area. I went for an explore on the way back from the main falls but the sun blew out the photos even with a GND filter on.
The photos are 1024x??
I went into see the rangers and have a wee chat. Let them know what I was upto and find out what they knew of the area. I really should have someone with me when I go. I take calculated risks but 1 slip and I will be comming out in a body bag. If I broke a leg I wouldnt be able to walk out way to wild gullys.
Let me know what you think of the photos.

nice shots there tony. I like k_falls3 the best. I also like k-falls5.jpg as well, but for me personaly I would have gone with a slower shutter speed.
Have you thought about posting these in the landscape section.
do you think your photos are poping like you wont them too?

do you think your photos are poping like you wont them too?
No not yet. I think they are getting better but this area is a colour nightmare, wazza will agree with that.
I will have a play with CS2 but its a balance. The greens and the browns are so close to each other as in contrast.
Its all the greens, foliage and moss on the rocks. So unsure how to get them to pop.
Falls5 is an amazing area way down stream. It was a water fall in a rock the log is lodged in there and trying to get the balance between highlights and shadows as it was very dark. Biggest bolders I seen and in this part the photo oppotunitys are amazing once the sun dissapears behind the ridge
theflyingkiwi
24th of September 2006 (Sun), 01:49
what is it do you think that causing the lack of pop that you are after in your photos. or do you think it's a lack of contrast of green/browns?
or is it a lack of depth?

All the colours merge togather so lack of contrast. I try to avoid the green cast, but even the water looks green.

I can see green and I can see shades of green, but bright green and yellow, I can see the differences when they are side by side, just don't ask me which one is which. It fun being at school, class mates always asked what colour is this, grrrr I hate it.

We must have at least four big lenses all of the same type, I think the 70-200 f/2.8 is a likely candidate, the Sigma should be the same size as the Canons, I know we have at least three Canons and one Sigma :D

Guys, I need to get myself perhaps a dozen reusable white matts, to show customers their wedding images. Instead of seeing their photos on the net 600px wide or on a DVD i'll get a dozen prints done and put them in the temporary matts for them to see. I think i'll put them on an eisel one by one.
Anyone know a good source for matts? I'll either be matting 5x7 or 6x9 images, and i'd want a couple of inches of matt on each side. White or just off white (antique white). I don't know a reasonably priced source here in Wellington.

I've got mats from these guys:
http://www.factoryframes.co.nz/
I got a custom size (About 18x10" I think) for a big frame, can't remember the size, 22x16" or something like that for $15. They cut it while I wait. I haven't really shopped around for mats, but their frames are very reasonable.

I use factory frames too.
If you use ones from their show bins, they're much cheaper. Say a 6x4" cut, for a 6x8" frame, will cost $1, plus $1 for the acid free backing.
I also buy their standard 14x11" frame size with a 40mm border, which will fit a 12x8" print in it (long wise, it's cut more than the short side)

Actually it is the celebration of the burning (execution) of the terrorist (Guy Fawkes), hence the bonfire, and later fireworks.

Halloween will probably eventually take over from Guy Fawkes, then in the tradition of Americanism we will begin to celebrate the 4th of July...
<Rant On> Ban Halloween! Every year we get a bunch of kids with some half assed attempt or no attempt at all at dressing up showing up at our door demanding treats. Had my motorbike talcum powerdered one year because we didn't have any treats, took months to get all that stuff off. Bike smelled of baby power for even longer (not a macho look for a biker  ).

I'm going to have to confiscate all your cameras unfortunately, you are all having far too much fun with them.
Kinda agree on the Halloween, but lighten up people! Yeah, fireworks are a waste of money, but no more than a camera or lens that doesn't get used professionally to make more money. As long as someone get enjoyment out of it, so what.<Rant Off>
I bought some fireworks last year that never got let off because Daniel got Pneumonia the week before Guy Fawkes. So we don't need to buy any this year. Hope they are still OK.

The Wakefield Domain Fireworks in Nelson is being held 1 week before Guy Fawkes so people can't bring their own stuff.
Oh and they're not having a bonfire.
Can anyone say "Political Correctness gone MAD!"
This is an event that's been happening annually for over 52 years.
I don't think there'll be many at this years one though.

Hey I like that idea. I think we should ban anything that really doesn't make any sence. Birthdays are ok cause that makes sence. New Year yea I can let that one pass. Christmas and Easter, well if that's your religon then you can clebrate that too. School holidays, well i hate it when the kids are down town, but it makes it safer to bike to work so that should be fine. Gee weekends now that tough, but it makes sence to have a break from work.
however everything else should be baned! it's all wrong I tell ya. :)
for the fireworks brought from last year, I would think as long as they have been stored in a dry place they should be fine. Do they have an expirey date?

That was a fun day..
D2NZ on Saturday, and Westpac Helicopter aerial shots today over Firth of Thames.
Saw the new helicopter being built.
The old one BK 117 I flew in, they've stripped it, replacing the motor with one with more torque, same RPM speed, so more load lifting capabilities, and will be changed over on 18th December. This will leave 2 Westpac choppers in colours around that week, so will convince them to do a shot of both while they're available.
Still another 4 1/4 hours on my other job (after I was over an hour late, coming from Ardmore)

Grasshoper follow the bottom right rock with your eye and where does it lead...to the waterfall. Leading lines and it follows the rule of thirds :) IMHO
Remember I compose with out the thought of cropping later.

Yes the leading lines are good, but I don't see any thirds. I really like the forground, but the rest is still a bit bland. The stick is a little distracting too (just a little, I am being picky!) Wife suggests cropping about a quarter off the top (maybe a little less than a quarter), and I think that might help.
Ahhhh.....it is so easy to criticise.....anytime you want me to go back to saying "nice shot Tony" just say so. But this is all good for my post count:) And remember, you don't have to agree with me.

rules were made to be broken.
If everyone followed the so 'rule of thirds' then everything would begin to look the same. Sure I agree that it does have its place but it shouldn't overshadow creativity.
out of all those recomposed shots I still prefer the original because you can see what tony was thinking when he took the shot. Scotts rework makes the rock seem like the suject. Frans version is not to bad but still the original has more . . . oomph for want of a better word

Hmmmm, speeding is a touchy subject around me.
Speed dosb't kill, its the sudden stop that does the damage.
The problem with NZ drivers is not them breaking the speed limit, its driving to fast for the road, the car, and 90% of the time, the drivers ablity to control the car, and thier awareness of other drivers.
Drunk drivers should be shot on sight though. Start with a leg wound, and work your way up for each offence.

I prefer my 1st version with a shorter top but it's too short to be a 3rd :)
Too much empty space on the left and the big "V" of sky is dead centre as well so I wanted to chop as much of that out as possible. Also the bit of stone protuding into the bottom right dosn't add to the pic so it's gone as well.
Then just levels, saturation and a bit of contrast.
Right, I'm off tho the Howick Camera Club see you in a few hours. I'm still wondering why nobody else takes their camera to the camera club.......am I strange?

As for the rule of 1/3, while I understand it I can never figure it out in a photograph. I just crop a photo, or frame a photo untill it looks right. weather or not that follows the 1/3 rule I really don't care. The interesting thing about that is the average viewer doesn't understand these.
Anyway I have just ordered a couple of things from B&H, a camera mount that I should be able to use on a car :) and a bracket to use for macro photography.

The trouble is that you cannot leave it up to the individual driver to decide how fast he is able to safely drive in any given set of conditions. Obviously people overestimate their own\the cars\road conditions or we wouldn't have the problems we have. Which is why we have speed limits.
"Good drivers" in "good cars" have accidents all the time, and I am not silly enough to think it will never hapen to me because "I am better than them."

a bullet to the head first offence.. stop drink driving there and then. ban carparks from pubs also may help. in the UK it cost a 1000 pounds + to insure a 1000cc ford fiesta, if you modify it then you are looking at double that... if i was 18 and had an wrx. then i would be looking at 9000 pounds + if i could find an insurance company to touch it..

if a car travels at 100 kph past a school and a kid steps out.. even if the car is limited to 100 kph the end is sure to happen..

With anything moving you can use the rule of thirds, but IMHO it's more important to leave space for the subject to move into. ie in that cart picture i'd crop it so there's more space on the left than the right. But the base of the cart along the bottom horizontal of the rule of thirds.

GKPE V - Is the current date OK?
Originally when planning the calender, we thought every three months will do picked a pattern out of the air and applied it. Worked fine except that I didn't realise at the time that GKPE V was the same weekend as Guy Fawkes.
Now the question is, should we change the date? Many of us here have or will have other plans that night, especially those with families, I for one now have three things on that Saturday
How I see it we have four options:
1. Keep it on that date and risk poor attendance

I think we should look at changing the date, its not really a big GKPE if only a couple of people show up.
The sunday is out, no way am I going to be in any kind of state to do lots of moving around after Guy Fawkes.
So either weekend around that date is so far fine with me.

I'm out every Sunday, and not so sure about the dates. Originally the Final round of D1NZ was going to be November 6th, but they're looking at the 13th now.
I'm also pretty sure I have something on the 30th as well. Guess I'll have to pass on this one too. But I'll know for sure, closer to the date.

hmmmmm.....I think I have given the camera club with no cameras a decent go.....don't think it is for me.
Well done, Scott. The clubs vary greatly from place to place, and over time. Some are Photo Societies, and others are Camera Clubs. Tauranga's PS is notable for the absence of cameras, and it does seem weird. There are those who are welcoming to all, and those who see the social tone under threat. After 18 months of involvement, I am cutting back my attendance. There have been excellent speakers, but recently some quite irrelevant ones, and the return on effort is no longer there.
My daughter and her two daughters attend Henderson, and it seems that they get good value from that PS. I joined in their field trip to Whatipu, and found them very accepting.

At the moment I'm working on the 28th, so my vote is for the 11th.

Ok lets look at the Saturday before or after. looks like there is a slight preference to before, and it would be nice for one of our out of town members to attend :D

Oooo a vote.
Voted 28th, as it's very likely I'll be unable to attend 11th as with the details on my previous post.

Had another play with my waterfall photo. I did use a GND filter thus darker at the top. This time I played with Selective colour in CS2 seems to made a difference and did a different crop

A shot from Sunday for TKRFAN :D
Damn! Just realised it follows the 1/3rds - HELP!
Hehe - not the normal TKR beast I am used to - but more to the point - who is the driver  Is it Gene Rollinson? Taryn Kugener?
