Had another play with my waterfall photo. I did use a GND filter thus darker at the top. This time I played with Selective colour in CS2 seems to made a difference and did a different crop

I like that! It look a littel dark, but that could be my monitor at work.

I'm guessing you were using a graduated neutral density filter with 4 stops of difference between the top and the bottom. I'd probably just show RAW or two frames and merge. 1-2 stops might work better.

todays news......

Had a meeting with a customer in our demo office, pushing our new software package. 10 mins into the meeting, she (the customer) stands up and says ' ohh the baby ' and promptly runs out the meeting.

She returns 5 mins later with a 9 week old baby. She had forgotten her baby that she had left in the car.

My reaction was ' what the....'

NB she bought the software....

second news snippet .. my boss was doing his general chat and out the blue he let slip that we (the rabble he calls techs) are underpaid by 10k a year. again my reaction was 'what the......'

time for a pay rise me thinks..

I have the 420EX as my primary portable flash, has enough power for most things, does loose a bit when diffused, and has no manual controls, I understand the 430EX is almost the same with some manual control.

I really must find a new ISP -- all this timing out, "slowband" etc...

Pete -- thanks for the TM link.

Tim & Scott -- thanks for your replies to PM

Duncan -- hope you and Fiona get some sleep. Tip: If your wee one keeps on waking up every 2-3 hours presumably for a feed, and then promptly regurgitates/throws-up -- he will most likely be colicky. Babies can't distinguish between tummy pain and hunger at that age so they cry. If it is colick then there are steps you can take so you can promptly fall asleep as soon as he does ;-)

I gave up after the sunset photo. Slowest its been for me for a while.
Gave me a chance to process my pano shots. There were a couple of WOW ones. 1 I may get printed its 4 stiched photos of the main Karekare falls.

While taking the sunset last night with all the smoke from oz 2 Greman students got into my scene so asked them to move, "only after you take our photo" so I did and they moved away they came up to whereI was and I had the 30D with Bigma to which one comments "There is a real camera"

Are we speaking "L" or Sigma?
Can't say I know much about the sigma but my 24-70L is currently my most used lens. Seems a bit big/heavy & built really well, Tony's tested it and pronounced it a little soft - I've found I keep trying to handhold at shutterspeeds that are really too slow so end up with shake so need to keep the speed up or use a tripod (guilty of lazyness there...)
I bought it secondhand off FM as I didn't feel the new prices were anything like reasonable. The hood is a great piece of engineering - fixes to the main body of the lens and the front lens element moves in & out of the hood so you don't need as much "petal"
does this answer your question any? ;)

what are you expecting, any idea? hourly rate? how long would you be photographing? how long is the party, will you be being a part of the party and snapping a few off when you see them? if so then maybe per image, but then they might only buy one or two images..thinknig out loud, so i would suggest a price and a certain amount of images for them to choose from, maybe $100.00 for 20 images or something as you're going to probably be part of the party as well. of course this price is up to you, so charge your worth. take a tripod, and do a mix of wide and telephoto where one subject(toy/child) is at the front with oof playing kids or colourful toys behind, include any signage in some, get an image of the doorway or reception if there is one. things like that, are there helpers or they let the kids go crazy in there? if helpers then include them, if food include a couple of shots of that, etc etc.

thats basically the line of thought i was going down.. looking at about 1.5 hrs of shooting then a little PP. provide a set of images... i am trying to push a link to my website from theres. and the web space coverage ( IE the photos) would be a great.. something to add to the portfolio.. so i was not to way off. thanks.

Batteries

Still waiting on both orders, however I have the credit card charges so know the exchange rates. After averaging the rate between both orders here are the real costs:
BP511 - $18.45NZD
NB-2LH - $23.06NZD
Postage is $1.72NZD Per person as the actual postage rate was not affected by the number of batteries ($US8.99 per order).

Looks like we beat GST though, both orders are under $400NZD :D (Exchange rate averaged 0.66, but there were also some forex charges on each order which took it to 0.65)

I will let you know when they are in, and PM you all account details...

Hi John
Whats better plasma or lcd? excuse my ignorance.
depends on the use..

plasma for a darker room - lcd for the brighter room..
then you have your viewing needs and preferences, and the personal likes an dislikes.. LCD has come on a long way in the last year..

personally i like the LCD but i tend to have a refresh issue every now again esp with fast moving sport.

Its difficult to say whats better its like comparing an apple with an orange.

dgcorner
28th of September 2006 (Thu), 02:03
Further to Chris' reply: Plasma if you love sport (mainly because of the higher refresh rates,) and when you have an option of darkening the room slightly. LCD for movies, etc., and with a brighter room. But having said that, anything below a 10millisec refresh rate is great since our eyes cannot notice the difference. Most LCDs & plasmas have 8msecs refresh rates these days. There are a few that go down to 4msecs but pricing is still up there.

Either way, at 8hrs of viewing time per day you have some 20yrs of life in these new TVs -- more than heaps of time to consider newer technology.

EDIT: plasma if you have the room, lcd if space is an issue -- mainly because of the 'pixel' size.

Hah. The other day GE employers were offered cost price of certain items.

20% off some LCDs.
Including the 47" Sony Bravia my dad will eventually get. RRP $5999, but had it for $4800.

Also discounted cameras, but not exactly cost either ;)
5d; $5166
20D: $1900

Still cheaper at Auckland Camera

PS. Kirst and I have a 32" Samsung LCD, which was around $2600 or something, but knocked off 200-300 on the spot.

Got a letter from Xtra today..

Dear Mr B.......

Xtra Broadband hits maximum speed

On October 26, Xtra is .......................(etc)

Your current plan $59:95
10gb Monthly Data Cap
slowed to dial up after 10gb reached
Downstream 2Mbps
Upload 192 Kbps

free static IP

The new plan

Xtra Go large
$49:95
no cap
Max downstream available. (upto 8mbps) (yeah right lol)
upstream 128 Kbps

no static (not supported)

Thanks for choosing xtra.

...well how is this maximum speed they have slowed down my upstream and have taken my static. for 512 upstream i can pay an xtra $20 a month and have a cap of 2gb... so if i am over by 5 gb (my usually usage personal is 7gb) it would cost me $400+ extra a month.......
how the f**k is this an upgrade...

on the go large no data cap... on a plan that has the upload and static IP i require there is a data cap of 2 GB..

static IP means it stays the same so i can always retain the same IP (handy for remote access)

the plan they offered with a faster upstream has a 2GB limit. I average 7 GB a month, so that 5 GB over at 2c a MB. about $400 (including static IP charge and extra $20 for new plan)

so my upload has been halved - so longer to post my photos to web - send emails - VoIP (the real reason why xtra have slowed this) crap quality - and Gaming online will be pointless it will be too slow.......

however if any of you guys have a telecom hotspot (WiFi) available where your are.

unplug your router point your WiFi at the hotspot and log on using your telecom login details.

you Will be warned that after your cap runs out on your plan a charge of $10 an hour will apply.

Well thats crap as they cant bill you. Also you get 2mbps download and 2Mbps upload.. (max)
Great for games and ViOP and as they cant limit it you can download a movie using peer to peer unrestricted full speed. ( about 10 mins for a movie) not bad..

this is true... what does unlimited (no data cap) fair use policy applies ***

read below...
Fair use policy
If you're on our unlimited Go Large broadband plan then the Fair Use Policy applies to you.
Some of our broadband customers use file sharing software (also known as peer-to-peer) and download large files like music and videos. This uses up lots of network capacity which means less is available for other customers.
If our network is busy, the volume of peer-to-peer traffic can slow the speed at which other customers surf the web or send email.
We want to avoid this which is why the Fair Use Policy exists.
We expect the Fair Use Policy will only affect a very small number of customers on Xtra’s Go Large plan and if you don't use file sharing software or download large files from the Internet it's unlikely you'll ever be affected by it.
If you do, all we ask is that you do so considerately, preferably by downloading outside the peak hours of 4pm to 12am (midnight).
If in a single day you use more than 700MB of data during the peak hours of 4pm to 12am (midnight) then we'll get in touch with some advice on how to reduce your usage. If your usage continues to be very high, then you may become subject to our Fair Use Policy.
That means we will transfer you into the Fair Use Pool where you will share a fixed amount of bandwidth with other users in this pool. You will remain in the Fair Use Pool for 1 week.
Should your usage remain high for sustained periods of a month or more then we may contact you to discuss moving you to a more suitable plan.
We may review the above limits from time to time to ensure that as things change you are always getting the optimum performance from our network.
The best time for downloading large files is when our network is not as busy. Ideally, that means between 12am (midnight) and 4pm. During these hours you're likely to get a fast and reliable service as fewer people will be using the internet.
Fair use policy Q&A
How many customers are likely to be subject to this Fair Use policy?
We expect less than 1 per cent of customers on the Go Large plan will be subject to the Fair Use Policy at anytime.
How much can I download before I become subject to the Fair Use Policy?
You need to download more than 700MB in any 8 hour peak period which is 4pm to 12am (midnight). This is roughly equivalent to any of the following:

Downloading 1 CD
Downloading 1 Movie
Downloading 100 Songs
Watching live music or video streaming non stop

The black helicopters are not for loan.

For a small fee thier sevices can be "utilised" however.
But, they require the use of one of our own "special" pilots.
