Well been to the falls and back. Camera took a beating with all the water spray. The wind that was created at the bottom of the fall made it real hard to keep water off lens and camera. Dam I need weather sealing

70-200L IS - I might as well since I will sooner or later be getting it down the track.

Still can't decide between 17-40L or the 17-55 2.8IS -- Great reviews for the 17-40L but a bit concerned with the 17-55IS, i.e., dust problems. I still have a few days to decide whilst the cheque clears:rolleyes: IS will really come in handy as I am getting older:p

Good on you, the 70-200 f2.8 IS is the ultimate zoom, I'm sure you will love it, and the rest os us will hate you for it:evil:

I personally think the 17-55 dust problems are overstated, and f2.8 IS is fantastic. I decided the 40 would be too short, and I'm not going FF anytime soon. But you already have the 24-70 range covered. Would getting a 10-20/22 give you a more flexable setup?

I went to a seminar for work. One of the presenters took his 10D to Antartica on the spray deck of his kayak. Although it got damp/mildy moist it worked perfectly. Everynight he wiped it down with a fresh water cloth. He had no problems with it.

Sign me up. Sounds like a trip of a life time.
People protect their cameras like they will blow up with a drop of water. They are quality made they take a bit of abuse. Dont dont let the water sit on them for to long, wipe down after shots.

Exactly. I was in Milford with my D30 under Sutherland Falls, misty water everywhere and all people were inside hiding. Me, I was up front at the pointy end taking photos. Never hurt my D30.

The trip to Antartica would have to be a once in a lifetime trip it's so expensive but what a trip.

Speaking of water, felt like an egg at AC today, asking for a couple of silica gel packs when it was absolutely chucking it down outside... . decided to buy a dry box and dehumidifying unit instead. Almost laughed when Ken asked if I'd like a bag to carry it in........("No, I'd like it to get wet!!!!!!!!")

Pete: Thanks for the two batteries. Service with a smile! Just read that the girls are staying in the hospital a little longer. They're very cautious with the health of little ones and won't take any chances. Best wishes, Pete!

Well, yes and no. There are so many permutations of every setting that I reckon I'll be old and grey before I use half of them (so next month really !!) The photos I have taken have been such a big difference from the 10D I'm still shocked. (I can so see the attraction of full frame). The missus has suggested we go around the SI again visiting the same places again but with the new camera. The colours and contrast are excellent and even the start up time blows me away. I just need to get out there and use it more.

Tony, if you are keen on waterfalls, you need to do Milford Sound, there is a back packers down there you can stay at for next to nothing, go out everyday for a few days to get it all, statically it will rain at least two of those three days, here is a famous Craig Potton shot of a waterfall starting:

Time for me to upgrade my 70-300mm lens.

Kirst broke it at the drifting. :p

Actually, it's the lens itself, the internals aren't right. Will zoom out but not back in. But at least has AF still. Twice in the past, this Sigma has had same fault, but AF stopped as well, and needed a new barrel.

So now looking for a new lens, which is sharp at 300mm, but lightweight, and maybe useful for travelling. Maybe even Fiji, as there's no way I'm taking my 120-300 over.

Just about to get another $1500 3 monthly bonus. And apparently I get a $1200 Christmas bonus if the company achieves, which no doubt it will. The $1500 is practically the cost of my Fiji trip, just need some spending money, then everything else I get can go to new toys. :D

Congrats John, bet you're damn excited.

Sorry to hear about the lens Warren -- wasn't this the one that was acting up a few months ago? Or was that a different one?

Congratulations too on the bonuses -- financing seems to be taking off in a big way. I just hope that the predicted economic slowdown doesn't affect anything significantly.

And, yes -- I can't wait to get my hands on the new toys!!!

Pete: I will have to speak to Kirst and see what we're doing with our 4 batteries. :)

Just a suggestion, sticking them in a camera is a good start, you get the best value from them that way, I have also used them to prop up my lens when I have the camera shooting on a flat surface with no tripod, handy for that too. With four you could get togther and build a mini tower :p

Actually Duncan may be heading up this way to collect, doesn't he work next to your building? Might be able to arrange something?

Hey Guys.. Quick Hi.

Need some IT help.. Bought another harddrive for my PC - photos take up too much room! I'm fast approaching the 1tb mark. Anyway, bought SATA this time, and a PCI SATA/PATA card.

My issue is the drive wont spin up when its plugged into the sata card, so it wont work.
If i unplug the SATA cable, the drive spins up.

I've tested the drive in another machine, works fine.
I've tested the card with another SATA drive, same problem.
I've tested the card with a PATA drive - and it works fine and shows up.

Im pretty sure its just the card thats faulty.. but just want another opinion.

Matt if its a Seagate drive you may need to run this: http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discwiz.html

I did, solved all my problems when I installed a SATA drive.

Its an ST Lab A-230 Pci sata + ata/133 raid card.

It has jumpers on board to select between the external and internal sata connectors. I've tried using both the internal and external, no difference.

The jumpers are set by default to the internal ones, and Ive checked these are correct.

Hey Guys..

SATA and PATA on the same card? Anyway as Tony said what sort of card is it?

Make sure the drive is set to run at SATA1, most modern drives are SATA2, some work fine on SATA1 controllers, some don't, I suspect WD's may have some issues, Seagates and Hitachis seem to be fine.

I'm looking it up now, some WDs do indeed have that issue though, the default is SATA2, so that may be the issue...

Yeah - a few from the south island trip and I'm rushing to peice together more from all round the place I just never got round to stitching.

I'm pretty good at it now it doesnt take very long.

I made the descion to make them all exactly the same size - easy printing that way, and when I hang them one above each other they just look like thise awesome series.

If that is the case I might take the card back and see If I can swap for a SATA2 one.

Whats the difference in speed?

If that is the case I might take the card back and see If I can swap for a SATA2 one.

Whats the difference in speed?

Try and install a jumper across pins 5-6 to limit the drive to SATA1 speeds first.

If the card is standard PCI, you will see no difference in speed what so ever, the peak bandwidth on a standard PCI bus (and that is all slots on the bus) is 133MB/s. SATA1 is 150MB/s, and SATA2 is 300MB/s. Even if you get a PCIX or PCIXpress card you are still limited by the drive, I have not yet seen a drive that can sustain anything over 100MB/s, so the only way you get peak performance is out of the drive cache, which is at the most 16MB these days, so you get peak for about a 1/10th of a second

In the days of SCSI and other protocols where drives shared the storage bus having an insanly fast bus helped because like PCI devices it was shared between the drives, so 4 drives each with a 40MB/s peak worked well on a 160MB/s SCSI. Now with SATA each drive has its own channel, so it is more marketing than anything else with one excpetion - NCQ, which is a feature supported by SATA2 which can speed up drives when they do a lot of random seeks, not going into that now as I have rambled enough...

MattL
2nd of October 2006 (Mon), 18:40
Yeah according to that URL moppie posted its the SATA1/SATAII issue,
and I can either lock the drive to 150meg, or get a new card.

Thanks for your help guys.. It was driving me nuts. Im new to SATA

MattL

Yeah, it would have been nice to get the spire in, but the camera was almost at ground level up against a bank, and as my namesake would say "you cannie change the laws of physics."

Pete's got my extra $6 or $7 from batteries, but that was goodwill. :p

I was going to make it $100, 25 each, however I'm not exactly rolling in money this week.

The other issue, is I NEED warren@warrenwilliams.co.nz email address. I get several emails, especially just after D1 event, so at the moment, I'm probably sending back emails saying not receivable. :p
Also a wedding client was to email me to confirm meeting on Saturday this weekend... At least I have a phone number.

What's the place you use yourself Tim?

I'm checking with all my friends, most have web hosting already, seems NZ is like $30-50 a month for the highest bandwidth

I'm looking not just to move my few htm pages, and couple of logo images, but rather my ENTIRE photo collection - or a more, "best of" and install Pekka's EE

As you like.

I have PM'd Pekka with a quick summary of the idea, after all this is Pekkas baby so probably best to do good by him :)

Thanks for that! Greatly appreciated, it ended up taking quite a bit of time throwing the whole thing together, and I put no mark up on any of the batteries either :D

Tony will be Tony and do it alone

GKPE website so what it going to be all about, who looks after it etc?
We could have a directory of who photographs what. Il put in a few buck, do we each get our own e-mail adress weka2000@gkpe.co.nz :)
