Tony will be Tony and do it alone

GKPE website so what it going to be all about, who looks after it etc?
We could have a directory of who photographs what. Il put in a few buck, do we each get our own e-mail adress weka2000@gkpe.co.nz :)

Will start a new thread about it when we get the green light from POTN management :)

Email address is an interesting idea, does make the whole thing a little more complex though, might have to go for a small hosting solution.

Pete's got my extra $6 or $7 from batteries, but that was goodwill. :p

I was going to make it $100, 25 each, however I'm not exactly rolling in money this week.

The other issue, is I NEED warren@warrenwilliams.co.nz email address. I get several emails, especially just after D1 event, so at the moment, I'm probably sending back emails saying not receivable. :p
Also a wedding client was to email me to confirm meeting on Saturday this weekend... At least I have a phone number.

What's the place you use yourself Tim?

I'm checking with all my friends, most have web hosting already, seems NZ is like $30-50 a month for the highest bandwidth

I'm looking not just to move my few htm pages, and couple of logo images, but rather my ENTIRE photo collection - or a more, "best of" and install Pekka's EE

www.hostgator.com . Easy to set up hosting and an email account, it'd take no time, but a day or two for things to propogate through dns.

edit: $4-6 usd mth, heaps of stuff i nkow nothing about included!

I'd host a small website on my plan for free, but email addresses i'd probably not do. I'd have to think about it.

I think it would be a shame if this only worked in Auckland. I was a member of a club a while ago when I lived in Christchurch, they had meetings every 3-4 months, between 10-20 people showed up. When I moved to Auckland the same society had meetings up here, they had them monthly and had 30-50 people turn up. I think at the end of the day it is about population, but then there are a lot of Canon users out there :D

I used ace-host.net for a while, and without a doubt they are the worst host i've ever heard of. They don't do backups, and when a server crashed I lost about two months of data from a mySql database. Their technicians are rude, are often not helpful, not very knowledgable, and can take a while to reply. They have a huge amount of downtime compared with any other host I know - one month their uptime was about 90%. I strongly recommend staying as far from these people as you possibly can.

It would be easy enough for a number of us with exchange servers to host web mail using OWA. I'd be happy to do it, but it would not be a guarenteed highly available service.

bl%%dy h$ll !!!

might be time to change then, although i have had no problems, but like i said, I don't know enough about it. i have a back up of my website on my hard drive so i would only need to reload it, have never had to do it though. i did find their replies quite fast, within a few hrs anyway, and i would say their replies are... straight to the point. i really wouldn't know how fast to expect replies from a server company, but these were faster than I have had to deal with in the past with other support systems.

yep whatever.. :p :p lol

not the best start.. anyway its only about surviving this year..

with another 18 home games to go an average of 1.5 points from those games and say 12 points from away games that would give us 48 points enough to stay up.

so that 3 away wins and 3 draws.
and 6 home wins 9 draws.

our home form has been great (except for the bluebirds)

70-200L IS and 17-40L -- figured that the weather sealing should be good. Besides, I see FF sometime in my future, hence my shying away from the 17-55IS.

I also figured that I won't be shooting handheld below 1/60s with the 17-40 given I have the 580EX... although the 17-55IS would have been totally awesome if it were not for the EFS mount.

If I total up all my drives (40GB-250GB) and not take into account RAID, I have over 2.5TB  There is a lot of duplication in there though, a full backup of all essential data is just under 120GB.

What I really need is someone else with a simular setup and we will just mirror each others data over DSL :D

As this is a rambling thread, I want to ramble. Actually I want to ponder on something, so I will. Plus it isn't about photography so turn off now if you aren't interested.

<ponder>Since the sad demise of the 5c coin we could end up paying more for stuff. I was at Shell getting petrol and noticed their Swedish rounding table which basically says anything up to 5c over will be rounded down and anything over 5c will be rounded up. So $1.05 = $1.00 if paying in cash. As usual at the pump, I ended up putting in $30.01 and paid by eftpos. BUT (and here's the ponder) if I put in $30.05 and paid in cash, they would have to round it down to $30.00, in effect - 5c of free petrol. About 16 trips to the station would get you a free litre. So, if you really wanted to and had time, if you put $10.05 in three times at one stop you get 15c free if paying in cash. If you did it enough times you could get enough for a lens !!!</ponder>

How Else am I going to get ahead.

I don't think that i am in a position to say how to improve your photos. . i look at yours than look at mine and go bugger.. not because yours are bad but because mine are. I use your work as a bench mark to attain.

no offense to anyone else on here, but in he short time that i have visited the site,

I see Tim as the portrait and wedding mark that i would like to attain.

Wazza for his general ability but his sport shots are in a different class to most here

And yours for your landscapes and water falls.

Believe me i am very opinionated but I will not tell someone that I don't like if i do not know how to improve it, sorry.

Well I just audited my storage assets after running out of disk space on one of my offsite drives (80GB)

If I total up all my drives (40GB-250GB) and not take into account RAID, I have over 2.5TB  There is a lot of duplication in there though, a full backup of all essential data is just under 120GB.

What I really need is someone else with a simular setup and we will just mirror each others data over DSL :D
think of the extra bandwidth.. ouch..

Tony......you know what I am going to say don't you?

I think your photography has come a long way, and you are very dedicated and get out a lot more than most of us. But you need to go back to basics. You know what I am talking about...

You need to develop dicipline. Rule of thirds, forground, background, all that stuff you can get in any basic composition book. And when you know that stuff, when it comes naturally, then you can break the rules, because you will have trained yourself to know when you can and should.

That's what I am trying to do myself. Often I fail. Often I dispair that I have taken almost 11000 pictures with my 350D and I only really like about 10 of them. OK maybe 20, but thats not a very good keeper rate. I know I have improved, but I guess my standards are higher now too.

I'll keep commenting on your photos as much as I can, because I get frustrated when I post something and ask for comments and get a couple of "nice shot" type replies.

Have you tried posting in the critique section? I might give that a go.

My $0.10 (sorry 1,2, & 5c are out of circulation, so I had to put my price up!)

Thanks :) I'm a long way short of where I want to be, i'm just a beginner with a couple of years under my belt, I get better every time I go out. Wazza's an all-rounder and will go far, he'll be giving me lessons one day, and i'd take lessons now if we lived closer together.

Tony -- how do you expect me to critique your work when my work is also "in process/progress"??? :p Suffice to say, I will say "nice" if I like it, "ugh" or "yuck" or "bin it" if I don't. I'm not your typical fence sitter -- I fall on either side after thinking things through;) In the year that I've been on the forum I've seen your pics go from "Uh huh" and some to "good/great/wow." The fact that it is not going the other way says heaps.

But as Scott says -- reviewing the basics is a sure fire way to get things going in the right direction.

we all have opinions about your photography, and most of it good becaue you have done some downright stunning images, but it is YOU who must look at the image and be pleased with it, if you're not pleased with it, then ask yourself why?, then apply that change. If you don't know how or why it is wrong then do as Scott says and disipline yourself- learn the fundamentals of light, composition and the rule of thirds, when to apply them and when not to. if you don't you will always be asking someone else for their opinion, instead of knowing that they are correct in these ways and being comfortable with the image even if the rules are broken.

You've been told this before, and now are being told again the best way to get your images to a point how YOU like them, all you got to do is do it.

tim

I'm finding 16:9 crops interesting at the moment, as well as strong vignette's. The rule of thirds is a guideline you have to understand before you can break it.

Sometimes, Tony breaks the rules and ends up with a not so good pic. Although rules are there to be broken, there is a way to do it... though it is too complex for my weak brain to put into words:p

If what she says is not true, i.e., "think it was because he wanted payment in full before you had seen the photos.. " I think that you should clarify. Otherwise, commenting would possibly make you sound defensive.

It is difficult to say anything to prop you up in such a forum. Let your work and your customers speak for you. Thus far, you have nothing to worry about.

nah- leave it. you don't need too. others can do it for you.. ;)

so what if you want payment up front.. i don't get a tank of petrol drive 400 km's then pay.

You could show them samples of other shoots before they pay, then they pay. Well thats how I see it working. Thats what our wedding photographer did.

Maybe forward the poster a sample email of your work.

Only used it once in action, but the camera stayed dried, just as long as you're own hands are dry.. But then you breathing on the bag will fog it up.. STILL, it's a better option than having a broken camera, and at 60+68 or whatever they were, is very cheap, even cheaper than B&H ;)

Ended up buying a 486 ball head + a 323QR plate for my monopod (of course I had to make sure that it would hold the minimum 70-200mm,) Stofen Omnibounce for the 580EX, and a Tamrac Expedition 8 backpack (HEPerry) I was actually after the new Expedition 7 (around $350 but someone stuffed up on their end.) I couldn't resist the deal given to me for the Expedition 8.

For those of you interested in the Expedition 8 (old version) -- Thomas at HEPerry says he has around 6 left. He gave it to me for a cracker of a deal - $180 (incl GST) and that is very reasonable for the size of the bag. My only problem now is getting more lenses to fill it up:p

Mark - give Thomas a call and mention my name & the Exp8. He will surely extend the deal to you as discussed -- $180 (inc. GST!) -- these are the last 6 of the lot according to him. His number 09 3079018. From the B&H website, the new Exp7 would be around $350 landed NZ (and that is a smaller bag.)

The 486 is good on the monopod as it allows you to position the camera horizontaly or vertically, and yet take the weight of (minimum) the 70-200mm. The base doesn't pan though so I don't suggest it if you are thinking of using it for panorama shots.

Re lightweight tripod -- have a look at Feisol.com (http://www.feisol.com/english/feisolen.htm) a decent range. These are carbon fibre ones and cost as much, but are as stable as the 3021/055BPRO I have (which admittedly is a little heavy but stable).

Warren -- I'm afraid that the 17-40 & 70-200 are the last lenses I am buying in a looooong time. At worse, I may have to add a 1.4 or a 2X telecon for more reach but at this point I am all sweet. I do have to buy that Heliopan multicoated filter that Emma at AC showed me. After spending heaps on the lenses I am not putting cheap non-multicoated UV filters on them ;-)

I foresee the equivalent of the 5D somewhere along the line.. but probably in 2-3 years. Those lenses should be good till then;)

Ouch, $240! I guess that I was lucky to stumble upon the deal at H.E. Perry. There are 6 left. Though not so sure if they are all black like mine. We can actually go into their office and probably buy some stuff now that I have a contact inside.:D

So when does the glass arrive? Why did you not go for a wide 10-20 type lens?
You already have the 24-70 seems a bit of a double up IMHO

Get your wife to allow you to make a mould of her and then make your own dummy out of silly putty so you can move it to what ever position you want

10-20 or 10-22 were for crop sensors only (and as you say "boy lenses" :p ) and (almost) the equivalent of the 17-40 on FF cameras. So, I've purchased based on my long term plans rather than short to mid-term ones. Besides, from borrowing Duncan's 17-40 I suddenly realised that I was happy with that focal range.

When did Duncan get a 17-40 ??? Do you mean 16-35. Well at least now the cheque has arrived and you lens will be here. All you need is time to use them.
I sold my 24-70 after it got made redundant by the 17-40.
