I would be more worried about John who knows which side of K rd has the blow up dolls

 At least those ones are interactive   Again, just don't bite too hard:lol:

Reminds me of an old joke about 2 old geezers who went to a brothel. The madame decided that it would be a waste to send her girls in and gave them blow up dolls. After the jaunt, the 2 old buggers had a chat.

Old Man #1: I think my partner was dead. She just laid back, said nothing and made me do all the work!

Old Man #2: Hell, mine was a witch! She flew right out of the room when I bit hard on her neck!

When did Duncan get a 17-40 ??? Do you mean 16-35. Well at least now the cheque has arrived and you lens will be here. All you need is time to use them.
I sold my 24-70 after it got made redundant by the 17-40.

Oops, yes the 16-35. I was shooting more toward the 17-18 side... and not even reaching 35mm.

Who knows, my 24-70 might be next on the chopping block if I find that I am using my 17-40 more often than not. In fact, I am thinking of selling my 50mm since it is not getting any use... I'll give it more thought... and probably get a 100mm macro lens since I love doing macro stuff.

Rant time...

Had a chat with iHug & Orcon people, as well as Xtra. From the little that I told them about my problem with Telecom/Xtra they feel that I am held hostage to the exchange rather than the ISP. Their lines go through the same exchange and therefore an increase in line speed cannot be guaranteed! Bugger.

Xtra/Telecom mention that the exchange is being upgraded within the year so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Till then, I guess that I will have to deal with 409kbps.. which is still better than dial-up speed:cry:

End of rant...

Thanks Duncan! From my chat with Mark/rabsoft this afternoon, he mentions something about a "high pass filter" or splitter. Do you know anything about this? The Telecom person I spoke with this afternoon was hopeless!

That is what happens when you have a monopoly of sorts -- disastrous infrastructure, high costs, poor service.

Yep and we can do a thing about it. I think telecom should be forsed to upgrade the lines from the house back to the exchange. My copper has been in the ground since 1970.

dg do u live near a hotel, bp garage, mcd's, or a mall. If so yo maybe able to hit up on the telecoms wireless hot spots that these places broadcast.

a wifi card and a directional aerial. an extra account log on. you will get max speed up and down from this is you can login to it. A basic jet stream account cost $29 and this is more than sufficient . Once you use the 1gb cap a warning will appear saying you will be billed at $10 an hour. (ignore this as they cant bill you). and carry on surfing. ;)

great for gaming. and faster than dial up and most broadband plans. (dont do your banking on it thou , not secure from your PC to the router but after that encrypted)

Honestly.

Take the job. From what you have described its a once in a life time opp. Free travel - accommodation and a salary. As you said the biz here has been going a year. Put it on ice go for a trip. image the photos you will get, the people you will meet and the contacts that you will make.

Can you honestly see the biz here being able to provide you with those opps and afford you to take the breaks to chase them.

You don't have kids, and to be honest what do you have to lose. you made a biz now whats to stop u doing that again.

nicely put, and you're right, it's the ops for all the places i have'nt been yet- thats the dilemma! also right- the biz can be done again. the job is a 5 mth stint, the ship caves after that, so organizing printers off etc at the end in Rio. after that then maybe go onto another ship for a few mths, a big one to make some serious bucks, would be a good time to hit Alaska about then maybe, which would be my last frontier to cover.

thanks for the input

That is really eye catching! Composition looks good to me, perhaps you could clone the wee bit of trees on the far left.

What happens if you take two shots, one with and one without the filter to enable the church not to become coloured? Not sure how much work that would be?

BTW where is that?

Opps, I ment to clone that bit of tree out!

I think taking 2 shots with and without the filter would be the best way to do it, if I had the tripod.

i think the two shot approach would be worth a go..

it may give you better definition in the clouds and allow the church to pop even more.

the bright spot where the sun hits the water - is there a way you could dull this a little. (it is just a tad bright.)

(if you do go back try closing the gate and the front door)

Personally I would have gone for 3 exposures and blend. I find that the tobacco filter is good for sunsets and clouds, in places where it dosnt throw a cast as in your case on the white church.

I like the composition of the photo. You are right about getting the basics right.

Never say 'If only'

On a cruise liner you wouldn't spend much money right? So bascially everything you earn is saved. Double bonus. Bit like working in a pub on a Friday night.

That's a really nice shot Scott. I think if it was just a gray sky I don't think it would have the same effect. Did you managed to take a shot with out the filter?

Personally I would have gone for 3 exposures and blend. I find that the tobacco filter is good for sunsets and clouds, in places where it dosnt throw a cast as in your case on the white church.

I like the composition of the photo. You are right about getting the basics right.

Scott would that be a good spot for a bright moon light night?

I don't go for those blend/hdr things, they just don't look right to me. That sky needed more than just a different exposure, it was the most boring looking sky I have ever seen, and I like what the tobacco filter did for it, but not what it did to the church. I think the best thing to do for this shot would be set up the tripod and take one with the filter and one without as Pete suggested. Then just put the one without on a forground layer and cut it out as I did with my 2 different RAW conversions in this case.

It makes the PP process a lot easier if you get it right in the camera!

Could be a great spot on a still moonlit night, although I'm not sure I could find my way there in the dark. And I'm pretty sure the church is not lit.

That is really eye catching! Composition looks good to me, perhaps you could clone the wee bit of trees on the far left.

What happens if you take two shots, one with and one without the filter to enable the church not to become coloured? Not sure how much work that would be?

BTW where is that?

duplicate the layer and add a blue filter, might work, then mask it and take out the parts you don't want. you might have to play with the filter a bit, another way would be to desaturate the duplicate layer, this would defo work.

na we haven't made our minds up yet, un .. ahh. yeah the op is absolutely awesome, there's just a couple of factors top consider, but usually it isn't for such a totally insane itinary... as we worked on ships for a few years, we know what is entailed with the work etc. I've been offered a few contracts since being home but haven't taken a second thought on them, but i think that someone who mentioned it might be right, i might kick myself for the rest of my life with this one.

Blended exposures is not the same as HDR. With blended exposures you mask and paint through the layers.

Lets face it trying to get 1 photo that has all the exposure right on everything is impossible.

I wonder if maybe a GND may have helped as well.

Scott -- given that you are taking on board all the comments, I can foresee Ver 1.1 being enlarged and put into my lounge for everyone to see. I like what Mark did with PPing the shot. However, I am still trying to get my head around the tobacco filter part. Could an orange grad give you a better colour rendition? I am thinking of getting one to play with this Tuesday at AC... we can all have a play

Mark/MHP - Go for it!!! If we didn't have kids we probably would have jumped at an opportunity like it. As Tag says you can always jump ship if you don't like what you're seeing. Just don't forget us little folk and do post spectacular sunsets from whereever you are ;-)

I would have to blame tony for making me worry about it now :) but the other reason is I have found a couple of issues some photos taken yesterday being a tad softer than what I would have expected.

I also got good use out of my 28-135 and man that thing is slow to focus. and slower than it used to be. I could focus going from a subject about a meter away to a subject several meters away. And this is on a clear day. I might have to get it looked at again. I had a problem a couple of years ago when the manual focus ring would do anything. however it would auto focus with out a problem

It was a messy race at Bathurst today. Paul Radisich had a nasty accident, too. Fortunately for him, he is OK.

Safety car periods dominated the middle period of the race, with only six laps under race conditions held during the fourth hour after a massive accident for Kiwi Paul Radisich.

Radisich slammed head-on into a tyre wall and his car flipped onto the side, the driver pinned in the vehicle.

It took crews more than 20 minutes to cut him free, eventually pulling him out through the roof.

He did not suffer any serious injuries but was put into a neck brace and flown by helicopter to a Sydney hospital as a precaution because of chest and abdominal pains.

yeah they follow the seasons, always in summer, not always tropo though, Alaska, Norway and Antarctica can only be done in the summer months, when it goes to winter in US they move to Carribean, Pacific and Europe.

Na,It wouldn't be possible to do a short stint until you've done one or two contracts of 8- 10 mths, so you know what you're doing and you've proved your worth. It's not worth it for you or them to go a stint of 4 mths usually. You work for a photographic company who positions you on a ship.called a concession company. they control everything. pricing structures etc. the payment is based on a percentage- the photographers get x percentage of the takings, or if the ship isn't a big earner, then they have a base wage, but even on them, if you go over a certain amount you get a percentage. It is big business, big ships consist of 8-9 photographers and the photo dept turn over for a ship can be around 1 mil a year. Because of this there is a hierachy system for the photographers. 1- manager, 2- assistant/ lab manager, 3- shop manager, photographers- 4,5,6,7,8,9. percentages go down as you get lower, but you might walk on at 9, and because people go on and off in their contracts all the time, you might walk off in 10 mths at #4 or #5. in the height of the season a #9 could make $400-600 tax free USD a week, a manager over $1000.00, the rest inbetween. Living arrangements are usually 2-3 person cabins unless you're a Manager, then you get your own cabin. whats free? food, living, $1 a day gets your clothes all washed and ironed etc. you have no bills so all the $ is there to save or spend as you want. Being a photographer you get to go where ever you want on the ship, if you want to go out on the deck to view the sites you can etc. not like if you were a chef. you also sometimes have to photograph people on tours when the ship goes to port, so you go to see the sites for free!

It is hard work, and you are on the go a lot, photographing a lot, it becomes repetative , but then all photography businesses are.

what do you get out of it? Imagine this, a simple day-

shoots-
7-10am - gangway(having to shoot with a bright morning, big white ship in quarter photo, people/ blue sky other half) meter it, set your flash etc.

wedding- 12.00 images around ship in and out, groups, singles, couple, cake etc..

3.00 set up lights and b/g for portraits

4.00 work 2 hours in shop

6.30-10.30- shoot portraits (using one of- existing staircase/green screen background/ normal background)

pack up lights and go to shop to put photos on wall, finish at approx 11.30pm

every day is different, but that could be one.

all design work/printing and processing/everything you can think of that is needed to run a business, is onboard or done onboard.

so what you get out of it is this... you do in 10 months what would take 2-4 years to learn, and only in bits here and bits there. you learn whats needed in running a photographic business. you learn how to do all this stuff, the ship businesses are at the forefront of the digital sphere, they have to be, they have borders around the photos for some images, the borders are made on the ship, and they can be anything, graphics/design/images/ you name it.

It is really hard to put into words but I have done a group image of over 400 people, weddings, corporate portraits and images, food.. you name it!

you go to all these places, and get your images, I have dvd's stacked with all of my images, all from different places in the world, my website is designed to my market here, so anyone going on it will never see the insane images i have from all over the world, one day a gallery...

not to mention the girls!! You can play it how you want, but half of the crew are obvioulsy girls, photogs are 'the catch' especially kiwi ones! :-) I have addresses all over the world, i'm seriously not kidding, but, I have met my dream girl and so i have no need.

Theres good all over it, but the downside is .. work, work, work. after 10 mths you really want to get off the ship, you're run down and over worked, but you have a pocket full of cash and have been to some awesome places!

when i first went to my first ship it was in Hawaii, I walked up to this behemoth of a ship(2500 passengers) going 'oh my god'! got shown my room and freaked out it was so small, i was bummed i had spent the money on tickets to get there and now wanted to go home, but I'm a goer and don't like being defeated so I decided right, i'll give this 1 month, get my money back and decide if i want to stay. the question never hit my mind again after a week, i had an awesome time, had a blast and met some awesome people(Zoe included). I brought a Eos 1n, an Eos3, some lenses while on there, paid my debt off and went to OZ, bought a Kombi and cruised the coast surfing and taking photos for 3-4mths. then onto 2 more contracts, now i am at Manager level so obviously things are easier in a way, and i get paid more.

I got lucky, I went on them when they needed good Mangars, I had come from doing portraits and running my own business here in NZ, so i moved up fast, i think tough that any Kiwi would move up fast as we have that common sence and a go get it attitude without complaint that is needed. If you're a complainer(which you don't seem to be), then forget it, stay home and build your empire.

whew :-D :-D

I could get you down there.. and could take my 300d in its waterproof case, would be able to fit something like a 17-40 in there too - then when your down there you just need to find somewhere dry to get it out.

Whats the storey on getting out?

Getting out? There is also one at Karekare its a drop in to a pool of water I want to get to the top of Karekare falls cant climb up it so have to go down it

I need to take out life insurance for Sandra but I am affraid they will think im nuts and wack up the premiums

There are 3 main issues.
1)getting down
2)keeping gear dry
3)finding a spot to shoot from that is dry.

Found underwater housings between $1500-3500 USD for the 5D dam thats expensive. Plastic bag and hope I dont rip it :)

Matt when are you normally free for adventures

Well abseiling is a very one way ticket.. Its easy to get down, but to get back up is the hard part. There needs to be some way of walking out from the bottom, or the bottom of the next fall.

Yes I see your point. Reminds me of climbing up something is way easyier than climbing back down. Looks like I need to think about this idea more.

Wazza I see they have a max of 72mm filter so my 17-40 70-200 are 77mm. Will look into this model some more. I dont mind getting wet just dont want to fry a 5D :(

Look at the Sea to Summit kayakers' bags. They are great for the job. I use a tubular 13L one, made of waterproof cordura. Cost about NZ$32 from a Christchurch retailer via Trademe.

It weighs only an ounce+ and is part of my camera bag gear. I have used it in squalls on a boat, putting my hand and camera into it ready for the next shot. Also good for wind-blown sand. My daughter uses one when she and her husband double-kayak. He paddles while she shoots seabirds around Mangere with her 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens on a 20D. The bag can be closed right around that lot.

So I have my camera in one of these it falls into the water will my camera get wet?

If this is the case that they stay dry then I could use them. Most people stay on the beaten track. I want to get where no one else goes.

These waterfall adventures are going to be turned into a book so its not just a hobby, there is a purpose. Most of the books are about the walking tracks mine is about the water ways.

I think my daughter has roll-tested the bag, but it is not sealed for immersion pressure. I'll check. Some multi-sport stores in AK do stock them - go see.

Are you doing just Waitakeres falls? There could be some good ones on the Waitawheta Stream where it drops from Dickies Flat (Park entrance) in Waihi to the Karangahake Gorge. There is an access track all the way down. If the next GKPE is to Waihi you may well want to try that!

funny, i drove through there the other day and thought the K gorge would be a good GKPE for yas, on the Akl side there is a bridge going over and if you walk down the field from there a bit theres like this old concrete factory or something.. ruins. theres a lot down there for photography, waterfalls galore without too much trouble, the bridge, etc etc

Yep just the Waitaks. I think there is enough to keep me going for 5yrs. We are taking going up the streams the hard way not this park on the side of the road take photo and say you have captured the waterfall. Where does it start what else is up there. I go out in the pouring rain to take my photos, waterfalls in flood.

Everytime I go out im scouting the area, finding best time for the sun, I walk up as far as I can then work out how to cross, go over around the obsatcle. The job is done when I got to the top and there is no more water.

Got the replacement 70-200IS -- Graham sure is a cool dude to deal with. I should be able to post a couple of pics after my job interview, and trip to AC at midday tomorrow. I have Tuesdays & WEdnesdays off so I can probably go shoot some ducks ;-)

You know I have never shot ducks with my sigma. I am going to be sending it off tomorrow. I hope it comes back fixed.

I have got my settings for this place to show 50 posts per page. So I am only one page 180. Still there are a few thousands posts and counting.

John, I'm glad you got your lens sorted.

Whats the interview for?

I have observed that it is much easier to get a job if you already have one! Good luck!

now who says that point and shots are pointless :) oops I mean compacts. This way you can still take some decent photos but without the need for a bulky slr

Chris: It is duck season anytime of the year -- all you need is a silencer ;-)

Tag: Have fun! And of course, show us the proof of the pudding ;-) Looking forward to your posts;

Tony: Been with Hill & Stewart for the last 5 weeks. So far I am enjoying it. BUT, I do have issues with my potential earnings... which will be 1/4 of what I used to earn -- I wouldn't want to be running to WINZ for a top up! I would prefer to be working hard and paid well, rather than working hard and getting paid change. Besides, 19 years successful years in sales & marketing should account for something.

MarkC: I hope your lens is good... I know the feeling when the lens craps out on you.

Scott: Thanks! Graham is a pleasure dealing with. I guess that one has to look past the fact that he doesn't have a "shop front" though he does have a jewellry shop in Parnell. Interview is with a "lubrication company" in the North Shore. They seem to have run out of engineers with sales backgrounds and they are looking at other sales & marketing fields to fill their need.

Mark/rabsoft: Stop thinking of getting the new 10MP mobile phone!!! ;-)

You may want to keep driving in for the rest of the week as Fullers seem to have had a few problems with there boats over the last few days and are now 5 boats down, so had a taxi to work and home yesterday all paid for by fullers :) and fullers had to hire another boat to take us to work today and I think we have a bus provided tonight to get home and from what I have heard I think it will be the same for the rest of the week :(
