Hmmmmm.......sorry, that doesn't make any sense....

You miss the 24-70 at full length, do you mean the 70 end? So you you are going to get a 35? Surely the 50 and 85 you already have are closer to the 24-70 at full length? Or the 70-200 at the short end?

 Sounds like you just want another lens to me:oops:

Some times I need something between 24-50. I should see what the 17-40 is like for portraits.

Me wanting another lens never. A 24-70 or 24-105 would be a good waterfall lens. I dont regret getting rid of my Sigma 24-70 but looking back it was the one I used mostly on my portraits.

(Full length = head to toe)

The 50 and 85 are great but I need something for full length body shots and 35 is about the average between 24-50 :)

4 hours and no posts? Is the power off up north?

I'm packing up, you wouldn't believe the number of red and white boxes i'm throwing out! It's hard, but I think i'll have to ditch the box the 70-200 IS came in.

It is a little slow.

Iv had an interesting afternoon.

I took the 30D back to AC, now I know exactly why I bought it from a shop.
I can't imagine someone working out of thier home being able to offer this level of service.
They cleaned the sensor for me, 4 times in all, because every test shot we tried showed 4 little specs in the upper right corner.
Not wanting to damage it any further, Nick (who sold me he camera, young guy, shoots a Noink) rang the Canon Service Manager, who said bring it over, we'll have a go right now.
So, off to Canon I went. They took the camera and came back about 30 minutes later.
Turns out there are 4 little spots that can't be cleaned off because they are on the sensor side of the filter.
So, my brand new camera is going to go in for surgery next week, they have to acutaly remove the sensor to get the filter off to clean it.
Should take 3 days, and of course its a warrenty repair.

I'd ask them to swap it for a new one, rather than have the downtime. Or get a loaner.

Moppie

I can live with out it for 3 days, and they do have the option of fixing it in a reasonable time frame, or replacing it. And 3 days is a pretty reasonable time frame :)

Actually, this may be a better option. Canon will recalibrate the camera. It will be more finely tuned than an ex-stock unit often is - their manufacturing QC standards are much wider than we would like them to be.

At least you have an almost-clean camera for the weekend.

I am amazed at how slack Canon has become with their quality control -- It used to be that nothing was let out of their sight unless it was in perfectly good order.

I would have gone for a swap like I did with Graham considering that the camera is still brand spanking new. But, as Clive mentions, Canon NZ would probably fine-tune everything and make it work far better than stock. BUT I just wish that they would do it the first time around and save us the grief.

Tim -- moving house is one of those instances where stress is comparable to a loss of a loved one or someone being put in the hospital. Take it easy. We wouldn't want you ending up too stressed... then again, a few bourbons will sort that out ;-)

The manufacturing numbers are now so huge, I suspect the old style QC just could not be achieved. I should hope that ID series still are more rigorously prepared for sale!

Lets hope so :)
I had a quick chat with the service manager, really nice guy. They must have some very serious equipment, including some very clever optical scopes for peeping at the sensor. They could tell the spots were on the other side of the high pass filter, and they could see a streak from where AC cleaned it, a streak that dosn't show up at all no matter what you do with the levels.

The lighting on the faces could be lifted, perhaps. I know the subject is the building process, but we humans work to faces if they are present.

An assistant with a reflector is all that would be needed. A fill flash could also work, but that cannot be as narrowly-directed as a 30" reflector.

Pete: gkpe.org is down :-(

Steve: those pics are alright. It might be my screen but seems like they are slightly underexposed? I have to agree that shooting under the midday sun can be difficult. Even more difficult is getting those blokes not to mind you taking pics. I just hope no one points a hydraulic nail gun your way ;-) EDIT: Also having the midday sun means getting the faces darker... a flashgun or reflector as Clive mentions?

Thx Guys, went back yesterday did a few more shots client very happy so have sent them off to the graphic designer.

It should have been checked before leaving AC. $2k worth of camera and no one checks. Mind you having said that one would question why the box had been opened if you were buying brand new.

Who gets their cameras serviced and how often?

My 5D is coming up to 9K yeh I know I have a trigger finger  I dont want to wear out the shutter after all its only expected to last 100,000 clicks.

Its lighter than the 24-70 F2.8. More contrast. Meant to be about as sharp. But the reviews always have a crack at getting a good copy.
Ashame they dont produce a NON IS verson.
Has the same 77mm filters as my other "L" lens

Had some freinds over last night. Gave me a chance to do come couples portraits. The photos came out fine but I not could direct a person to the front door let alone how to pose. I have no idea what Im trying to acheive and it frustraits the hell out of me.

How the hang do you direct people if you have no idea what you want to acheive. I see the shot when it arrives and I get it but to do portraits you need to be in control and direct.

Watching Moppie direct on that saterday afternoon that we did made me realise I dont have a clue about people

Any ideas on how I can get a handle on this. I cannot see the final photo in my head so I feel like a ship without a rudder.
Winging it make me feel like a fake that could not charge for a sitting.

Well some low life scum crawled out of the sewer and into Harvey Norman, and then slimed out with my 2GB Kinston Elite CF card

Was uploading photos from it in one of those kiosks, went to the counter (about three meters away) to ask a question turned back and it was gone >:(

Looked everywhere, hasn't been handed in, not in any of my pockets. Card was only 2 months old!

Security cameras don't cover that area, and they admitted that was not the first time it had happened in there.

I hope they enjoy our family photos on the card, fortunatly I didn;t have anything on there that isn't already copied to my PC.

At the end of the day, you need to go with what you use rather than collect all the glass -- those are expensive mediums to grow mould in;) From your previous posts you miss your 24-70... what's stopping you from getting something that you know you will use?:p

Yea it seems like it. At least it's a canon :) I have had this lens in for repair once before, a couple of months after the rally of rotorua I went to. It would focus ok but the focus ring wouldn't work.

Tony in repsonce to your studio work, I think you need to spend time with someone to learn how to photograph people. Once you understand how you wont them to sit, put their hand etc then you will know how to direct them.

That's what moppie did so well. He kinda knew how he wonted people in front of the camera. that will direct the photographer direct the model.

Autumn is the time to be in Queenstown, that is when the colours are happening. Last time I was there at that time all I had was a crappy Sony P&S, and an Film SLR, some of the shots I got on my SLR were pretty good, but it would have been nicer to have been able to take more.

Well coffee time, then off to shoot the IHC walk, get to try out my new piece of gear this morning, I am 99% sure I am the first one in the group to get one ;)

That is an awesome opportunity to learn - Autumn should provide a range of colours! Now, if it wasn't so expensive to fly there... Who knows, I might be allowed to allocate my 1st quarter trustee allowance for this one in May 2007...:D

What bugs me is Glams 2n hand 24-70 dosnt come with original box or hood. He will get a hood for it but I am funny about expesive lens where there is no box.
I have had a look at Canons Non L primes but reviews are not that great.

The box not being around is understandable -- very few of us (like me) tend to keep the boxes of our lenses and tripods... the hood going missing is not acceptable though. Graham needs to supply you with one. Have you asked how much he is going to sell a new one to you?

Ah the 35mm has 52mm filter and I only get 58 or 77. I will just have to save up. Mind you I could have a new 24-105 by Tuesday for $1700

He will throw it in. I keep all my boxes. I dont want to part with my primes, the moment you do you will want them back. I dont need F2.8. For my hiking in the bush the 24-105 would be better due to weight and range. Im in this situation because I sold my Sigma 24-70 :(

Memo to self buy more glass and dont sell it.

Most comments say the 24-105 + 5D are a match made in heaven.

Kinda figured you would end up with the 24-105 -- it is a very versatile range and should cover most of your needs through the woods and waterfalls.

I am actually considering selling my 24-70 and getting one... but not in the near future though. After all the spending I did I need to either wait for another refund (which is unlikely at this point) or save up:rolleyes: Us mere mortals do not have money growing in trees:lol:

if enough people are interested i could arrange an mini bus - or if say only four from up north come down then the wagon is big enough for all the gear and five photographers. (including driver)

the dates given on the trip are for the Friday to Monday. if thats the case then say fly up Thursday . fly back Tuesday . flights are $250 return at the mo...

may be bring the partners for a weekend break then the mini bus works...

Well here is the deal I have been offered $425 each for 50&85mm $650 for 100mm macro with cash diff of $325 for a Canon 24-70 F2.8 2yrs old

So I will loose about $500 on what it cost me to buy.

I cant buy a 24-70 out right not at $1800+ Tough choice.
what would be your cash price for the 100mm macro..

Tony. I feel the same way about primes. Every now and then I get the urge to get one or 2, but I just don't think they would get enought use, so I went with a set of good quality zooms (OK not the same quality as what you have, but they are very good on a 1.6 crop body) and all of my lenses get used regularly and produce good results.

Every now and then I wish I kept my Macro, but it wasn't getting enough use to justify the money. I get a lot more use out of the 10-20 I replaced it with. I may get another Macro one day, when I win lotto or something.

If you are not using the primes, and will get more use out of the 24-70, go for it I say!
Just don't post any "I miss my primes, goanna go buy some" comments around here any time soon :)

Is it a new 24-70? or one of glams import specials?

Well I paid close to $1k for it. Glam has a couple that you could get cheaper than from me.

Scott I know what you are saying. I have come to the fact that I own them so the esiest solution is just to buy a new lens and not sell my primes :)
I know I would have kicked myself if I ever got rid or the bigma. Even though it is not used all the time, when it is used the shots are great.
Any way 7,8,9 lens is not excessive unless they are all "L"s

So Canon 24-105 andCanon 400F5.4 I should be done. Woops forgot about Sigmonster :)

Well Tony -- whatever you decide to do I am sure that the learning you will get from the experience will be invaluable. As you say, you are willing to lose a little if and when you decide to sell a lens that doesn't live up to your expectations.

To date, I am happy with my four lenses in my stable -- these give me the range that I normally shoot in whilst giving me fairly good to great IQ. The only things I see missing (and I need to save up for them) are: auto-extension tubes for macro(the manual ones are a real pain to use); and either a 1.4X or 2X TC for those times that I need more reach. One other thing I need: Spyder monitor calibration system. Borrowing Pete's is great, but having one at my disposal is going to be awesome.

.

The group gives me ideas before I do anything. After all 2 heads are better than 1, and Sandra just goes "well you know what your doing"

All my glass in my stable is VERY sharp and good quality. I also have a very versitle collection and lets face it 1 lens wont do everything. I figure that good lens will last a long time and no matter what camera come out in the next 5 yrs the glass I have will still work just as well then as it does now.

Before I post to TM -- is anyone interested in a 1 year old Lowepro F&S Rover Light? Only reason I'm selling is that I have a Tamrac Expedition 8 which holds all my gear and gives me room to grow.

The back-pack can hold a DSLR, 2-3 lenses, and/or flashgun on the bottom compartment, while the top compartment can hold a rain-jacket, lunch, etc. It is still in good to very good condition. The only major outings it has had is the GKPE Rangitoto and GKPE Auckland's Lesser Volcanoes trip. Colour is Black & Beige/Khaki.

PM me before the day ends if interested. $100 (if a fair price) would make me a happy chappie. Open to other offers. Will list on TM if no one is interested.

John, just a thought.

I have just got a big backpack with room to grow too. But I am now thinking of getting a smaller bag for the times I want to travel light. I think I am going to get a lowepro top loader that fits my camera, 17-55 and a few bits and pieces. So it might be worth keeping your bag with this in mind. Sometimes you don't want to take the whole kit an kaboodle.

Thanks Scott! I have a Tamrac 19 Zoom that is the equivalent of the Lowepro AW70 or AW75 Top Loader. The 70-200 on my 20D+BGE2 fits into it quite well. What I am doing is getting those Tamrac MAS system lens cases that complement the bag and "snap-on"to its sides so I can carry the 17-40 and/or the 24-70.

But having said that, I may think of keeping the bag for those mini-GKPEs that require us to bring lunch, but not all our gear -- after all, food, next to camera gear, is important.:D

Si, sorry to hear about your cat. Get the P-Series - it is a good starter. The first few filters we (Scott, Tony, and I) all started with: ND grads which are helpful when you want to hold the bright sky back.

Just vented to Sideswipe at the NZ Herald, they may ignore this, but you never know:

To whoever swiped my 2GB Flash card out of the photo kiosks at Botany Harvey Norman on Saturday afternoon. I hope you enjoy the card, it is a high quality card, only two months old and well looked after, I also hope you enjoy the family photos on it as I will no longer be able to, and lastly I hope you enjoy knowing the fact that I needed that card to cover the charity Down Syndrome Buddy walk on Sunday. You are selfish scum and have no idea of the consequences of your thoughtless actions.

Not having my 2GB card was a real pain yesterday, I felt like I spend half the event downloading

There are other brands, but I'm happy with my cokin setup. From memory the prices are something like:

P Filter holder: $20
P Adapter rings: $25 (you need one of the for each lens filter thread you want to use the setup with)
P Filters: $40-45 (Some of the fancy ones are more I think)

I modified my filter holder by cutting the front 2 holders off (they have 3) so that it does not vignette on my 10-20.

What Scott said... There is a new filter holder for WA lenses but AC don't carry it.

Cokins are the cheapest and more practical way to get into filters. There are those who swear by it, whilst others on several forums think it is rubbish.

Fwiw, as long as it gives me what I'm after, without the colour impurities that the oh so learned and enlightened say, then I'm happy.

There are other alternatives but the price jump does make you wonder whether it is worth it... given that colour casts can be corrected in CS. One of the major branded ones is Lee -- which can set you back a few hundred dollars for a decent set of ND grads and the holder.

It actually went very well - short of it being offered to me on the spot. My only problem with it though is that it is a sales/mechanical engineer's job and everyone knows that I'm no bloody engineer! I can take things apart but can't guarantee that I will have all the nuts and bolts in the right place when I put it together -- you've seen the 28-135 -- it is still a work in progress.:o

At this point in time I decided that I will wait for the right job -- mainly because I want it to be (hopefully, fingers crossed) one of my last ones for a long time. I just have to suck it all in, tighten out belts and wait it out a little longer. Besides, I'm still having fun with H&S and moving to the new store in 4 weeks has possibilities.:D

I thought about that, but then it is an extra field to keep up to date, POTN provides DOB so I followed suit. They have an age field caculated off the DOB, but I am not at that level of coding yet. Everything is optional here.

Scott, sorry to hear about the car. There should be someplace else that you can take the car to -- I've seen your car and I can say that there are far older, far worse for wear vehicles on the roads with an up-to-date WOF. As long as the car runs straight, and the bump doesn't cause a safety issue then it should be warrantable.

No I don't think so, There is a tear in the structural part of the chassis running about a metre along under the car. I'll get a quote to repair it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Is it difficult to create one's own web site/page? Or will it be easier to join Yahoo 360 and limit who and who can't see your galleries? My brother sent me Macromedia MX 2004 but have been mulling whether I want to go into that sort of stuff -- my wife complains that I am in front of the computer too much...

Not too hard, no. Just use www.jalbum.net to generate your pages, way easier than flash I think. Plus html everyone can access, some people can't do flash, especially at work.

a couple of days a go a few of you guys were discussing Xtra and the port 25 filtering.

Here is the official email from I-gen and xtra.

From:

Barbara Redway <Barbara.Redway@telecom.co.nz> (Barbara.Redway@telecom.co.nz)

Subject: Port 25 Filtering initiative - this will impact on private email servers

Hi Everyone

Please find following an advise received from Xtra concerning Port 25 filtering. Separate advise will be sent to clients that have a domain name or static IP and may therefore be running their own email server.

"IF YOUR ARE RUNNING YOUR OWN EMAIL SERVER YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE IMPACTED BY THIS
If you run your own personal email server or offer SMTP relay services to others via a mail server that runs on an Xtra dialup or DSL account then this change will impact you. We suggest that you to opt out of the Port 25 Filtering service if this is the case.
As you may know, Port 25 is the dedicated Internet port that is used for sending email. Unfortunately, it’s also used by spammers to send unwanted email and new viruses and worms will often spread across the Internet using this port, which is why we want to filter it. That way, all email being sent on our network goes through our dedicated email servers and gets scanned for spam and viruses.
Filtering Port 25 started for all new Xtra customers in April 2006 and will begin in October for all existing Xtra customers. This may result in inbound and outbound emails being blocked if they are being sent via a private email server.
If you believe you have a legitimate reason for using Port 25 directly, rather than sending email via our dedicated email servers, we recommend that you apply to opt out of port 25 filtering so you can keep running your email server. However you will need to agree to maintain up to date anti-virus and firewall software on your computer in order to be considered. Please be aware that by opting out of this change you are more likely to receive spam, viruses or worms.
You can apply to opt out by completing the online form which can be found from the bottom of the webpage xtra.co.nz/port25
Please note, you can only apply to opt out of port 25 filtering online and can NOT apply for an exemption over the phone.
Lastly, it’s important to note that Xtra reserves the right to filter all Port 25 traffic for all of our customers at any time, without notice and your request to opt out does not guarantee that you will be exempt from Port 25 filtering, now or in the future.
For more information on Port 25 and the changes we’re making visit xtra.co.nz/port25."

that looks good, the only thing that I would change would be to remove the cf card, or to make is smaller. It would be nice for the site to be at 1024x768

so for those of you running private mail servers or overseas smtp. now is the time to act. your router will need a small amount of config. and the port 25 need to be opted out from telecom.

(there is a hidden reason for the filtering of port 25. and thats is stop other isp's mail services being used on the telecom network)

well it must be said that telstra started that one...

I was aiming at 1024x768, that is why I shrunk the whole thing, the graphics are not as clean in the shrunk version either, some of the joins are now visable. WHen I shrunk the CF card too much is becomes unreadable (borderline now), moving it causes many issues, I can bump it upwards a smidgen, but in the end I thought that most people would probably have higher res screens or they can just scroll ;)

on my laptop I have to scroll, however on my desktop I don't have a problem. personaly there are two changes I would make to the web site. remove the card and make the main window wider. To me is just a bit small width wise.

Couple of thoughts:
- We know that's a camera body, but will many other people?
- The text "about GKPE", "members" should also be hyperlinks, not just the buttons.
- Profiles page: i'd rather see a list of members, and profiles on a separate page. Also the avatar is hard up against the right margin, i'd put in a spacer.

Keep up the good work, i'm sure everyone appreciates the effort you've put in :)

Nice.
it could be a ploy to push the xtra security suite. (if you don't subscribe we will filter your port.)

if this stops others competing, then the government will be forced yet again to intervene. but in the mean time the NZ public are the ones whom get used as pawns.

Wa*kers the lot of them. but they have us by the short and curlys.

It says if you use an alternate email server on the net you might not need to opt out. I'll not bother until things stop working, and in the meantime I have webmail.

Nzshrimper
16th of October 2006 (Mon), 06:57
you we be able to receive incoming mail just by port forwarding to a new port. however its the sending that you will have issues with. if xtra block port 25 (filter it) the no email will get through to the email servers. I think the main issues is going to be with exchange servers that forward their own mail. (hence why are running around getting all corporate customers to opt out now)

oh well such is life.

I'll opt out then, thanks Chris. Took 2 mins, longest bit was looking up my xtra password since I never use it - the router remembers it for me.

I'm going to give www.hostgator.com another big thumbs up. Those guys really know their stuff, they understand and solve problems I don't understand, then explain them to me, where necessary. Usually I just email them some arcane problem and get a polite reply 30 minutes later "we fixed it". I know I gave them a hard problem when it took them 36 hours to come back to me with a solution, but I marked it low priority and I was impressed they solved it at all!

Making the window a bit wider was on the 'to do list'. Any suggestions for identity if I remove the card?

I think the vast majority of out target audience will realise it is modelled on a camera, I will see what I can do about making the names hyperlinks as well, the issue there is I would have to break them down into smaller components. As for the profiles, it is my longer term goal to give everyone their own page, haven't figured out how to make it work on the current format, noted on the spacer, will do when I do some more editing.

Also on the to do list is to tidy up the graphics, they didn't survive the downsize too well, work out a way of linking the profiles to an easily editable text source and I have found a script that can convert DOB to the age on that day :)

For now I have spent over 30 hours working on it so I will add the additional profiles I didn't get earlier, Wazza and Duncan. I am going to take a breather for a bit, I need to get the event photos from Sunday sorted.

Them darn Dells, who would own one, or worse work for them  (opps done both!)

That was not a thermal failure, that is a component failure, hence why they are replacing the box nice and quickly with no fuss, they don't want you guys making a big deal about it after their recent well publicised battery issue.
