we'll seeing as we are all IT geeks here...
around 1am this morning.. one of my servers caught fire.. heh.
I know things get hot when crammed into 1U, but not THAT hot!
was a dell poweredge - a power regulator on the mainboard.. so dell are going to ship me a complete new system.

Anyone have a need for a giant paperweight?
Matt
Matt, glad to hear that it was just your computer and not your house that burned down. Glad also that Dell has come to the party and replaced the whole system... which I hope has sprinklers built in ;-)
Hmmm five stud. I am in the market for some four stud (100mm) alloys or steelies in good condition?
Making the window a bit wider was on the 'to do list'. Any suggestions for identity if I remove the card?
I think the vast majority of out target audience will realise it is modelled on a camera, I will see what I can do about making the names hyperlinks as well, the issue there is I would have to break them down into smaller components. As for the profiles, it is my longer term goal to give everyone their own page, haven't figured out how to make it work on the current format, noted on the spacer, will do when I do some more editing.
Also on the to do list is to tidy up the graphics, they didn't survive the downsize too well, work out a way of linking the profiles to an easily editable text source and I have found a script that can convert DOB to the age on that day :)
For now I have spent over 30 hours working on it so I will add the additional profiles I didn't get earlier, Wazza and Duncan. I am going to take a breather for a bit, I need to get the event photos from Sunday sorted.
Them darn Dells, who would own one, or worse work for them  (opps done both!)
That was not a thermal failure, that is a component failure, hence why they are replacing the box nice and quickly with no fuss, they don't want you guys making a big deal about it after their recent well publicised battery issue.
Pete - kudos to you for all the hard work! And I thought making a write-up was difficult! :p

Guys - some opinions please?
I'm trying to get myself some last minute wedding bookings for before Christmas, to keep me going until January when I have lots of bookings, since i'm not working in IT at the moment. My plan is to do some special deals, but not done in a way that will devalue my name/brand. I'll go back to my $1125 basic packge, which includes my time but no prints or albums, though I might throw in a couple of enlargements, or do 6x4 prints cheaper than usual.
My plan is to use this google adwords ad
Wellington Wedding Photos
Stunning Wedding Photography
Pre-Christmas Special Packages
And this price page: Link (http://www.wildphotography.co.nz/wedding-photography-packages-beta.html)
Thoughts? Please DON'T QUOTE THIS MESSAGE since i'll be removing the link to my commercial site soon and don't want it to stick around.
Any thoughts appreciated :)

I think you're dropping too much, you have here $1124, but on there $1200 so i am figuring you're going the $1124.00
either way you're dropping your price to below 50% which is a lot. it might make you look hungry maybe, might be better to add a little more so you're only dropping 30% or something and add a proof book or/and big enlargement for free or something.
I can't remember the whole deal with adwords as i've pulled out of them, but does it have to have 'Wellington Wedding Photography' at the top? why not put something like 'pre-christmas special' or Pre-Christmas Weddings' at the top? it might catch a persons eye more if thats what they're looking for. then wedding images or photography on the next line.

Looks pretty straightforward Tim, a tried & proven sales technique to get the bookings in sounds perfectly reasonable to me. How many of us have bought gear on "sale" - lots and lots and we don't think anything less of the product afterwards.

This is a good point, I had a similar issue with 'perceived value' when contracting to certain companies regarding certain skill sets, if the rate is too low they don't take you seriously, or you are not really that good, the best example of this sort of thing is the Apple iPod, Apple does not allow retailers to put them on sale unless arranged by Apple, you know the line 50% off Sale! (excludes Apple iPod).
However:

This is also a good point, you must be a better deal at $1200 than the guy who normally charges $1200, because you are normally $2400 which means you must be better.
EDIT: Just don't head down the Briscoes path, where no one buys anything from them unless it is on sale!

This isn't actually a price drop. My usual package includes an album, i've just subtracted the album price and left my base package there. The special will be me doing something like 100 6x4 prints for maybe around $500, instead of my usual $1000. The price will probably be $1125, I haven't decided yet though!

Try and get on board with some dress makers or cake makers, I know someone who does both and is often asked by her clients if she knows a good photographer, it seems they sort the dress out first.

Tim,
I figure you have left your cards with all celebrants/wedding planners/dress shops/ etc?
If not get to it, ask celebrants out for a coffee, your treat, offer them something in relation like 1 free simple family portrait once a year or something, dress makers offer them 30% off any promo shots, things like that.
you might already do this eh, but it's all ideas, celebrants are an awesome connection.
tim
16th of October 2006 (Mon), 23:43
I guess I could check the yellow pages and cold call some dress makers and cake makers. There's one in Lambton Quay I could call into too. That'd might take a bit of time, and I don't do it already.
How does the google adwords ad look, and the updated prices page? I can do that very quickly and easily. Like I said I want to keep my reputation and not be known as the cheap photographer, but still get some last minute weddings even if i'm not paid as much as usual.

How serious is she? And what does she want to use it for?
If its simple snaps of her mates, and prehaps the odd landscape in Auto mode while she's out with daddy, then get her what ever she thinks looks prettiest.
If you care about image quality then make sure its a Canon, Fuji or Noink.
If she's showing a real interest in photography, and dosn't mind if the camera isn't pink, or blue, or what ever colour is trendy, then just get a Canon A series.

Bugger, was at AC & HEPerry this morning... no lens cases large enough for the 70-200! I find the original case flimsy and though maybe a good Lowepro or Tamrac would do. I would need to remove the hood and collar to make it fit :-(
Tony: Let me know what you are after. I can get you a P&S at mates rates.:p
EDIT: I know that we are going to be "discontinuing" the IXUS 65 and that will mean a good price drop...
Tim: Looks good, but I'm with Pete -- don't give away too much... 30% (as per MHP/Mark) off is a tad too high. Re: wedding gown makers & wedding planners -- a sure fire way of getting your name top of mind would be to get someone to introduce you to them. This can be done via your old clients - give them a call, see how they are going, ask if they need more prints, THEN, ask who made their (and their entourage's) gowns. Ask if they could recommend you to them... Cold calling is good, but it takes a while to build rapport with the designers (they can be a quirky bunch;) )... If you come recommended then that gives you more brownie points.

50% seems a huge drop. i would go for a smaller discount say 25% and offer an extra set of photos or a free large print (canvas or something like that).. Keep your service to the standard it is now, offer full products but just take a little off.
This will help generate more work. As the bride has her book to show her mates. remember word of mouth is the best advertisement.
Use the the wedding shops and bride mags to push your services. 50% i my opinion does cheapen your services.

personally I would go in to each of these places and meet them, especially if I would like them to have some flyers on their front desk or pin board. If I was working in a shop and I had 2 photographers wishing to work with me, 1, flyers came in the mail, the other was brought in in-person, I would choose the later and probably bif the earlier. It might be more work and cost you a little more in fuel and time, but it would be worth it. work out your areas and start closest, moving out until you've got rid of all of your flyers. Once you've done the rounds for the first time there will be no need to do it again, you'll be able to send them. But a suggestion is to drop in when you're in the area and say hi every now and again, they're in your industry(weddings) so there's always something to talk about.
I'd stick with the first image, and the flyer looks good, although I'm not fussed on the emboss on the red, maybe just tone the embossing down a tad.
go for it, and yeah NZShrimper is totally on it with that one.
also it is a good idea to be in with wedding planners. They deal with people who come in from all over the world, not just NZ, and if it is a NZer it is usually a well-off one who can afford to use one.

There seems to be a whole 'underground' network of Wedding related services run from peoples homes and almost purely based on word of mouth, you should see if you can infiltrate one of these networks, I am aware of two up here, one though a friend who is a dressmaker/cake maker, the second is my wife’s hairdresser, who knows a whole bunch of people who do these things too.

I dropped the 30D at Canon for its Surgery this morning.
I hope it recovers quickly!
Tim, why did you include the photo of the couple looking away?
I find it a bit "odd" It puzzles me (may explain why I have no intention on doing weddings)
They are looking toward their future... though it does look bumpy to me from all the hills ahead of them:p
personally I would go in to each of these places and meet them, especially if I would like them to have some flyers on their front desk or pin board.
Agree with Mark -- the personal touch always wins at the end of the day.
. . . Nah seriously, I'm already complaining about being exhausted...
That is what age does to you young 'un :p

i think that the more you can get out there the better for you.
Do you have a white pages or yellow pages ad. if not et one for nxt years edition.
get some ads in the wedding mags. maybe try other events . some portraits and family shoots.
I have wedding magazine ads, I had an ad in the printed yellow pages, but the statistics I gathered told me it was a waste of money. I have yellow pages online, and that's not cheap.
My business is growing nicely, I just want some last minute work to keep me going.

I don't own a vehicle, but i'll have a car for the wedding this weekend so I might do it then :) I'd send wedding planners my full regular price list, maybe not the specials, because i'd think most people using a planner would plan way in advance. Can't hurt though.
The trick would be finding them!

A friend of a friend couldn't afford a photographer, asked me to do it, and after some thought I accepted. I got a few books, studied and practiced for 3 months, then did the wedding. It went very well considering, and the photos came out great - though of course i've improved since them. I really enjoyed it so I kept doing it :)

Hello again everyone! Thailand was a lot of fun, despite the rain/flooding!
Hope everything is well with everybody... I assume Tony has at least a couple of new lenses, that tim has had a few bourbons, John has sold some nice TVs, Pete has had a modicum of sleep, Mark has passed on a few expert tips, Chris has taken a few more sick days, and Wazza has flitted between job and photography like a madman.
Do I need to read the 58 pages that have been written since I left, or am I close? :D
Thailand was great, extremely friendly locals, some interesting tours, and an excellent travelling companion. We spent a lot of money, and managed to bring back an additional 20kgs of luggage, not a bad effort. Hopefully I'll have a few shots to put up after the weekend. Assuming I manage to adjust to the timezone between now and then.

to offer 5Gb storage space, and a lot of bandwidth, for my needs, I'd be paying $30-100 a month, I paid $186 for 2 years flat rate. I can't complain with that.
People on Dial Up or Telecon' services shouldn't be looking anyway. :p

You can't complain at the price, but you can complain that the product (web hosting) is poor. If the product is poor the price is irrelevant. I can get into your gallery now but can't see the higher res photos. I don't think customers need to see EXIF data btw.

This will be the gallery, just a default setting for all, so will remove some exif information when I have the time.
Will also look to have a "portfolio" section on my site, possibly flash, like

And once that is in place, I can take down the general gallery.

I'm convinced a professional look would be better achieved by not laying out all the thumbnails like shoes at a bargain basement bazaar. There's no subtlety in doing that. A cheap jewellery store spreads out trays of its trinkets, whereas the top shelf designer boutique tempts you with the 'individuality' of its pieces. So why not just have one thumbnail showing, which smoothly transitions to the next image when rolled over (or whatever ylou call it). I visited such a site recently, and it kept me guessing and wanting to see more! Not meaning to offend, but in seeing all your shots more or less at a glance, they are all competing for my attention. Imagine each shot as a fine piece of jewellery, so be savoured and drooled over on its own. ("We have something rather special that might appeal to you, madam.") Each gallery item should be revealed individually, with no two items ever on screen at the same time. Feature each shot with understated class, not like racks of cheap shoes in the manner of some amateur photoblog. After all,you are professional, and yourwork should be 'showcased' on the website just as a Ferrari has the showroom to itself. I have to say, I think you can do a lot better, Wazza.;)

Fair comments.
Unfortunately my limitations are what the little program dishes out.
I still think it's much better than my current pages, such as
http://wazza.nfscity.com/westpac
Now I have slideshow, a main index of thumbnails, and clickable images (left side for back a photo, centre for back to index, and right for next).
I have been trying in vain to get Gallery2 working to the desired effect, but wasnt working, so tried this JAlbum.
Still eventually, I'd like to use Pekka's EE, but seems at no rush is releasing a 2.01 version full install, only upgrade options at moment.
My photography hobby/job is sometimes becoming less appealing at the moment, so I'm more than happy to keep it as a hobbyist site rather than pure professionalism. When my IT skills are lacking and I have $0 to do anything better.... Ahhhh
tim

Yeah cool.
I've been in such a rush to get this done, and been driving me crazy. Just wanted a streamlined gallery, where everything has the same style etc.
I can't simply move my old galleries over such as
http://wazza.nfscity.com/auckland.htm
As I wrote it in notepad, with remote files from another directory. And opening into a window alone. To me, although most don't seem to like it, I at least think it's a step forward, sure I can do better, and will tweak bits and pieces, but so far, just used basic ones, with extra options and Chameleon skin, with black background, to follow my dark theme.
tim

Make a directory structure with copies of all the images you want in your gallery, and keep the structure. That way you can easily regenerate to a new style later.
Wazza
18th of October 2006 (Wed), 07:49
Yep, definately doing that. Once the uploading is complete, and likely AFTER a weekend break, I'll start tweaking the image headings, and also styles, see what works best. For now I'm much happy that it's better than current. Especially that you don't have to click an image and then go backwards.
I guess photographers themselves are hard to impress. :p
I've asked about 30 people so far, online friends, drifters (whoses shots they can now scroll through), and workmates, all said it was much better, then get the real critique here. :p
First reaction is like ahhh why bother? But seriously, I know you're all just trying to help. :)

Wazza - make sure you work out why you're putting images up. Work out your target market, what product or service they want, and the information they want from your website. Likely that will be a portfolio. Then show them the best of your work, rather than make them sift through a huge amount to work it out themselves.
Wazza
18th of October 2006 (Wed), 08:04
Sifting through folders picking the best, would have also added many hours to the task. I simply dragged all images across.

The only thing that baffles me, :p
You're the first person to say they don't like thumbnails on an index page.. Have you seen Tim's own page? Or any other persons EE gallery, Gallery1.5/2.0 gallery (Kirst and forsaken). I know one image scrolling through to another wouldn't be liked by many, having to go through every image to find the one they're after, particularly motorsport stuff, when a fan is looking for their favourite driver.
I did, and do like the SimpleViewer layour (Mark/MHP uses it, and I've used it before)
But it's a bandwidth thief, everything is downloaded at the click of the main page.
Such as:

DiscoLizard

Wazza - I don't reckon it's too bad, especially for a first draft.
I'm at the same stage, I know I want to put something up, but I'm too embarrassed by what I've got to do so.
What I was thinking, is that duplicating SimpleViewer's layout is possible without using flash, which would save on the bandwidth. A little bit of CSS and some ASP, and you could have a template page which is automatically updated (as you could just use a numbering scheme for your images). You would then have a standard gallery, where you could copy and paste the pages into a new directory every time you want a new gallery, and just put images with the same numbers into an image folder in the new directory. I'm doing something along those lines for work at the moment.
Anyway, just a thought. I think your site looks good for a photography sharing site, but for your purposes (selling your goods), I think it needs a bit of simplification and to be a bit smaller.
Wazza
18th of October 2006 (Wed), 17:33
Current purpose is just to share photos, I'll soon have an official portfolio only section, sharing say only my best 10 wedding images, best 10 other stuff.
I may actually replace the 3 wedding galleries with simple viewer.

Wazza, just had a look, yeah its all go. i tend to agree with Ian, Tim mentions your target market, and this is what it is all about. I have thousands of images from all over the world, but I think there might be only 2 or 3 on my webby, and it's only if they relate to what I'm trying to sell, And they're prob not the best ones, i just got bored with looking at the good ones as well as them having no place in the market i was aiming for. It's a hard thing to do, but it has to be done.
Tell the truth i got lost in all of the images on your pages, There's too much to look at. I don't know how you would work it if you want to display all of your images, maybe from your index page have a 'portfolio' link, then have seperate portfolios of about 10 of your absolute best images on there. Then another page link going to your full pages. Really it is like Ian says, thet you want to tempt your client. there shouldn't be any second rate images on the page you want your potential client to look at. For a wedding if i looked at a website with only 10 spiffing images on it presented in a cool fashion i would probably go with it. depending on the images being displayed of course.
Take a look at this and you'll see what i mean by temptation:
http://www.designerportraits.com.au/
You can bet they do a lot of portraits and each session would have hundreds of images, but only 4-5 are shown.
its a long road doing your own webby!
This how it was explained to me:
if it was my site ...
and if my site was a principal source of marketing for
my business ... I would only display my very best
shots. IMO, you have some very strong photos mixed in
with some ho-hum stuff ... don't dilute the good with
the pedestrian. Weed out the shots that don't reach
out and grab you ... only display the shots that say
"LOOK AT ME!". Be your own worst/best critic. Look
at your site as if you're a potential client.
Also with your lowest wedding package you should really move up to 5x7's instead of 6x4's. 6x4's are too main stream and so look average.

I know it's not a GT4, and not blindingly fast. I don't want an aging turbo at the moment. Just a good car that handles well and looks good. Some of the SS3s have got a VVTI BEAMS motor in them, similar to the Altezzas, but from what I can make out this is the standard one. I would rather have a good standard one with 50000kms than the BEAMS with 100000kms.

The ones with the BEAMS engines (its a 3sge) are very quick, and they have the brakes and suspension to match.
That one has a 3fe motor in it, an Ex used to have one, and well, it was SLOW, SOGGY, and handled like a wet towel in a tup of grease. My aging, arthritic and asmatic Prelude will easily out preform them.
Of course the looks thing is subjective, but its a good way of showing your femine side :p
Toyota have made some very nice, reliable, good handling cars, sadly the base spec Celicas are not one of them. They are built to a price, and the deisng is very much a case of form following function.
They are targeted at a very spefic market, women who know nothing about cars.
The GT4 and BEAMs powered cars are very different, built with performance in mind, they share only the basic body structure and interior. They are targeted at fans of the older celicas, and people who like a fast, good handling well engineered car.

I have done a bit of research. All of the Jap SS3s have the upgraded suspension, limited slip diff, and other enhancements like the GT4, unlike the SS2. But only some have the BEAMS motor. Was your ex's an SS2? They look the same but are very different underneath.
Thanks for implying that I am women who doesn't know anything about cars by the way.
I do intend to drive one and decide for myself how they perform and handle, and will try to find a BEAMS one with reasonable Ks to try too.

Good points Mark/MHP
I fully understand the points regarding target market etc, that's why I'll be driven to get my main page changed, with a portfolio, or full wedding only section.
And keep the more fun/personal/unpaid work to the side, such as Aviation stuff, motorsports (which I do generate money from, but only more when I share more shots). Other drift photographers have 400-500 shots but obviously there'll be some bad ones there, I tried to keep it under 60 shots, but when there's 39 cars, and trying to share the best 3-4 shots of each car (otherwise you won't get a sale, if they don't know what you have). So motorsports, I'll keep loads there.
I had a look through my South Island gallery, heh, what I thought was good, really wasn;t
I had a target of 500 shots, I basically did that, but in reality could easily compress that down to 100, which I'll likely do.

The only thing that baffles me, :p
You're the first person to say they don't like thumbnails on an index page.. Have you seen Tim's own page? Or any other persons EE gallery, Gallery1.5/2.0 gallery (Kirst and forsaken).
I did, and do like the SimpleViewer layour (Mark/MHP uses it, and I've used it before)
But it's a bandwidth thief, everything is downloaded at the click of the main page.
Such as:
http://wazza.nfscity.com/glasswell
Of course I won't give up, I'll take all suggestions, and try and make something that many would be happy with. :)
I remember being approached by a street vendor in Milan who held up a booklet of tourist photos above his head and let go part of the 'book'. There was a 'waterfall' of 50 images 'concertina' d inside the cover. He was trying to impress me by sheer volume of 'wonderful shots'. I
He didn't, needless to say.
On a professional photography site, I want to see one superb image, and think 'That's good!", only to have my breath taken away by the next as it is revealed. Soon, I am hungrily clicking (or whatever) to reveal the next superb image, and the next! (And yes, they do have to be superb, or why would I employ that photographer?) I'm simply not going to think 'Wow!" if there is a 'wallpaper' of images all trying to impress me simultaneously. If there is to be a selection of thumbnails on the page, each should represent a treasure trove of fine images on a particular theme - e.g motorsport, or weddings, or landscape (although personally, those names are as uninterestingly functional as 'soap' and 'cereals' are at the supermarket - that is, they do the job, but that's all.)
If you want 'professional', your presentation and images have to scream "Pick Warren!"

Well some good news, Canon have my 30D ready and waiting, fixed it and had it ready 2 days early! Can't complain about that service
That's great! I am sure that NZ Servicing recognised that Canon Manufacturing had failed in a duty of care and merchantability.
When do you get it?

Thanks for implying that I am women who doesn't know anything about cars by the way.
I would never do such a thing :p
My understanding is there are 3 different versions, the fe powered one , which is slow soggy and good for looking the part, but thats it. Then 2 3sge powered versions, both have the same suspension and brakes, so should be fun to drive, good handling cars, but one has a standard 3sge with I believe around 160-170hp, and the other has the 220hp BEAMS engine with VVTi-L.
It sounds like you should be looking for one with the non-VVTi-L 3sge in it :)
But then I only worked in the Industry for a couple of years, am still activly involved in it, and moderate one of the Internets largest forums that just so happens to be dedicated to all things automotive, so what would I know? :p :p :p :p

I guess there is just so much stuff coming out of Japan, and in so many different spec and trim levels, that its impossible to really know what a car is unless you go and look at it in person, and drive it.
However, my experiance, and Im talking real world, not numbers and engine codes off the internet, has shown me that all the fe powered Celicas, from any generation, are soft and clearly not aimed at a sporting driver. This is experiance gained from driving them, servicing and working on them, and knowing several people who have owned them.
Iv had this debate with someone before, about buying an ST202 that he swore would be really fast, with tight suspenison etc. He bought it off a dealer in Japan, despite my advice to the contray, and him having never driven one before. He owned it for a week and decieded he had to sell it because it was simply to softly sprung, and handled like runny poo in kitty litter.

One of the guys I work with is marshaling at the rally, he is also an EOS DLSR user (350D), shame one of the marshaling rules is he is not allowed a camera, apparently if you are using a camera you loose concentration on the job and get bowled

Went to Harvey Norman and well you know how it is. Looked at a Canon 24-105 F4 IS for $2250  Looked at a Epson 2400 printer $1999  Looked at a Canon 8400F scanner and brought it  does slides, 35mm negatives etc cost me $400 could have gotten cheaper but I was there and I got it.
Had a play wont get thrashed but I want to get a whole lot of old photos scanned and put on PC now I need to learn about upsize resizing my wedding photos done by my late father so they were 3.5x4 size the small ones anyway.
I did like the weight of the 24-105 about the same as the 17-40 but didnt have my camera to test.
The salesman who Ive delt with in the past had this big grin on as soon as he saw me $$$$$$$. He was telling me an employe tryed to walk out with a 5D but got caught and fired.

Also I am looking for a tripod that's light weight for tramping with, anyone got idea on models etc?
