my 20D was sent in on monday, they recieved it on tuesday and now I wait
Si, let them know that you have a very important shoot coming up and that you would appreciate it if they could do everything possible to get id done as soon as possible -- its how I got mine back quickly;)
ok I got a couple of questions for akl people, where is the best to buy a camera bag, is it AC or the place John got his bag from? I am looking for something that can carry everything in it :) plus anything extra I might need
Also I am looking for a tripod that's light weight for tramping with, anyone got idea on models etc?
I am coming up to akl on saturday, having to pick my mother up from the airport at 1:45pm. So I will be coming up to AC for the items I just said.
HEPerry are closed on Saturday... so it will have to be AC. Depending on what you are thinking of spending, the Lowepro Nature Trekker has received rave reviews... though it will set you back a few hundred...
As for the tripod, the ideal one would be a mag-fibre or other composite tripod. You need to make sure that you get one that your gear can grow with too - main reason I got the 3021BPRO/055PROB -- it will handle up to some 12kg of gear ($360 at AC). Manfrotto have a magfibre version of that but will set you back $700, not to mention a ball head (my 468 coast as much as the tripod itself.) Have a look at the Manfrotto website, as well as Feisol.com.
Btw, I got mine off eBay and saved heaps (landed NZ) B&H might also be reasonable.

 Thanks Tim. I was just amazed that someone started bidding on it! I thought that I would have to relist this again and again...
Mark, have a look at eBay too, but don't deal with anyone who's had less than 98% positive ratings and had negative feedback int he last year.

Anyone going to the Targa rally over the weekend? They are at Pukekohe race track on Monday afternoon.
Hi All
Yep, I plan to pay the Targa a visit - they are around PN on Wednesday/Thursday - think I might hit the square in PN on Wednesday evening to see them 'close up', then head over to Manfeild on Thursday afternoon to watch them tear around the track - should be great :)

I just discovered the wedding I thought was this weekend is actually NEXT weekend! The bride pointed it out when I called her just now. Doh! Not sure how I got that wrong, the date's written down correctly I just forgot to check it. Now I have a completely free weekend and nothing planned!
Job interview next week - thinking of going back to IT full time instead of contract. Big pay cut, but more training and career development.

Thanks John, but since I killed my car, camera gear is off the menu for a while....like 10 years!
I hate car shopping! Started out this morning having almost no idea what i wanted. Reled out the celica becaus I decide I need something with real back seats for the times I need to transport kids. Also decided I want and "adult" car, not a boy racer car, but not completely boring. Other than that I had no idea. So we visited 421 car yards, looked at 6782 over priced, high milage pieces of junk, and 9873 cars we couldn't afford, and eventually found a 2001 mondeo with reasonable ks, 5 speed manual and the 2.5 v6 motor, which we bought home for the night. And it's not much over the budget. Just read the dog and lemon guide blurb which wasn't that complementary.....ahhhhh what to do....off to do more research....

Scott, you wont to know what the best thing to do is. just find a car and buy it. 1 it's only a car. 2. as tony would say it's only money. 3. don't worry about resale value, when you go to trade it in the car yard will never give you the ture market vaule anyway. no garantees that a private sale would do the same. 4. Cars arn't worth the hassle. 5. camera and photography is more important that a car. :)

Scott, bummer about the car :( Didn't you look at a Mondaeo last time around? Also that 2.5 V6 is not light on gas, same motor as our old TX5, goes like (insert expletive here), but chews the gas, 300k city driving to a 60 litre tank. Much better open road though. A wagon would make family trips away a lot easier though.

I can't stand the Dog and Lemon guide, Iv never found anything in it that was all that accurate. For example a lot of he problems listed only effected new cars that were usualy fixed under warrenty. Chances are if its a NZ new car, i.e. ex rep mobile or lease car, then any issues with will have already been well sorted.
The only negative I know about them is the back set of cylinders are hard against the fire wall, and you need to almost completely remove the engine to change spark plugs and deal with any ignition issues. Not a problem a low millage car, but as the approach the 100,000k mark it can make for an expensive service.
This seems to be a common problem with a lot of modern V6 cars, the last shape Camary and RX300/330 both have the same problem.
If you deciede you like it, I hope the dealer isn't to hard to deal with :)

is it an ST...
if it is very nice,,, price for KM's a tad much.
if it is the ST they go like stink... remove the cat and air filters. (replace them them) have the engine chip upgraded and your fuel eco around town will increase. the open road it will eat up the road.
They can be bit soft on the breaks. (then again so r all euro fords).
As you are getting it from a ford dealer - that will add about $1000 on the price. (but then again its a good time of the year to haggle)

or
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=73381515&key=429723 tis one is a 2005- one years warrant until 2010 - and ford warranty. They have a few of these all different colors.

Tidy looking car, with those kms its cleary an ex company car so should be well looked after.
However, its getting really close to needing is 100,000k service, which is the engine out, spend lots of money job.
When you take it back ask the service department for a quote on new plugs, leands, ignition pack (coils etc), as well as all new belts. (don't le the dealer see you do it, he'll give you his own made up I want to sell the car, price).
If its a price you would be happy to absorb between now and 2-3 years, then go for it.
With those high kms you should be able to talk down a lot on price, 12-13something?

Yeah, it is the ST, and goes good. It is also a manual, which I prefer. The v6 mondeo's are not that common. This is the only one that I could find on trademe or autotrader, and manuals are harder to find than autos. I'm going to see how flexable they can be on price. If they will talk turkey I will probably buy it.

Thanks for the tip, I think the service dept is open tommorrow.
It's just had a big service. looks like the brakes were overhauled, new pads and rotors (is that something I should worry about?), plus the normal oil, filter etc.
The original window price was $17990, so will be interesting to see what I can get them down to,

$15k - $15.5 would be a very fair price...
when you search for the ST's take out the V6 and just search ST for some reason they dont push the V6.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=71978449&key=447232
another ST slightly higher Kms but it should go for another 100k - get 100k service done - all up would pay say 13.5k- 14.

Fairly normal at that sort of millage to need some brake work done, modern cars are useing softer and softer rotor materials, with harder and harder pad materials, so its not uncommon for newer model cars to need new brakes at much earlier intervals than older cars.

But only because australian made cars useing out dated technology were allowed to compete :)
It was nice to see an Ausie win the event for a change though, rather than a Kiwi driving an Ausie car, or an Ausie in a Kiwi prepared Ausie car.

Nice, does he also scream at 3 hourly intervals to let you know he needs feeding?
I still think that it is colic. A visit to the paediatrician (I hope I spelled that right!) should sort things out if your midwife can't put a finger on it. 3 hours is sounding heaps like my two boys.
I hope you find a good one Scott. It is indeed a nightmare looking for a decent car that will run good. Spent a few months before deciding that the Merc was good... I think ;-)
lol i just wanted to say, you kiwis sure talk a hell of alot... Like 634 pages, your all insane?!
We're also one of the most active POTN groups around the world! :p
Don't buy a shiny car. Two toe rags have keyed my lovely Peugeot 406 V6- one while in Rotorua and the other while parked on Mt Eden Rd.
Sorry to hear about your car Iain -- someone must have wanted their pictures taken so badly and when you didn't oblige.... Toe rags like that should be caned and I bet that will be the last time they do it... then again, we live in such a PC society these days where crims are cuddled, and the victims are victims twice over.

tow bar.. what to tow things.... not a great gearbox to be doing that and under powered.. a falcon would better the better options for anything heavy than a trailer carrying two packs of chips.
And please tell me what fluke... I believe that the triple 8 car is top of the driver standings with a number of wins this year. Yes luck does play a part in winning Bathurst. The blue oval is by far the best car this year. I only want to do light towing occasionally, but decided I would rather have the extra money than a tow bar. There are a couple of vehicles in the family I can borrow when I need a tow bar.
I went past the other one and had a look. it was newer (2003), done 105K, better condition inside, but not as good outside, and asking $16,990.
Anyway, got them down to $15K (tried lower, but they wouldn't go there!) and an FPR hat thrown in for Daniel (he is the Ford fan in the family, and I may have to switch allegiences now that I own one!) I pick it up on wednesday. Yay, got my weekend back, don't have to go to any more car yards (I may have seen them all already!)

I guess we all have different priorities. I like to take photos, but I also like nice cars, so choose to split my funds between the 2. Besides, I am actually very happy with my camera setup at the moment. I went to AC with rabsoft the other day, and was bored, because there was nothing I wanted to look at.

I am not really expecting to get anything much for the car, I just want to dispose of it. So if you can make use of the wheels you are welcome to them. I need them until wednesday, after that I will be removing anything usefull, or that I might get more for selling seperately(stereo, speakers etc) and ringing around a couple of wrecker before I decide what to set my reserve at on trademe. (Or if I get a good offer from a wrecker I will let them take it off my hands).

How long do the cartiarages last. Does it clog up much?
I've had this one for a couple of years. First bought it when it came out since I couldn't affor the ip8000/9000. No clogging so far. What I like about the Canon is the individual ink tanks, i.e., replace only those that you finish... unlike those Epson ones that have a single cartridge with 3 colours on them... if you run out of cyan then you have to bin the thing even if magenta and yello are still full.
If you want to have a play with the printer you know where to find me. Just bring your paper and disc with your photos on. So far I'm free on Wednesday...
EDIT: this model is the 2 picolitre model so ink droplets are finer than standard ones

ip5000 works for me, I don't print many photos, I mainly print documents and directly onto printable cds. Consumer magazine ran a comparison and it came out pretty well, I could probably dig the article out for you if you want, it should be in a box somewhere. ip5200 is the new model.

John the Epson R800 and R1800 have 7 colurs and a clear gloss coat.
I want one with at least 8 colours not worried about DVD/CD printing
I think A4 will be enough if its that good and I want bigger I will get it done else where.
Im in a artistic mood digging up some old Sony F828 photos I did they are not sharp and a few things wrong but it seems my photoshop skills have come a long long way.

I can't fault the i9950 apart from the fact that when you print A3 it chews through the ink quite quickly

My iP8500 A4 printer works well for me, although I wish I had gone the extra hundred or two for the A3, esp. for panoramas.
Because the tanks run out at different rates, it is not easy to calculate costs, but I estimated paper $1.50-$1.80 per sheet (Canon PR101/Ilford Pearl) plus $4.50 ink. I have bought replacement tanks for PhotoCyan and PhotoMagenta. The Green, Red and CMYK have not yet run out, and have not blocked during the year since purchase.

It costs $4.35 + GST for 8x12 prints from my lab, on kodak pro paper. You'd have trouble beating that price printing at home.

But only because australian made cars useing out dated technology were allowed to compete :)
It was nice to see an Ausie win the event for a change though, rather than a Kiwi driving an Ausie car, or an Ausie in a Kiwi prepared Ausie car.
Hi All
hmmmmmm..... well sorta Moppie, an Aussie driving in a pommie owned team with an NZ prepared engine ;) 888 are pommie owned, and SBR prepare the engines for the team LOL
and TKR *might* be in the championship in a 'better' car next year, all depends on how generous people are donating to the cause to get the $400k needed by 1 December, if they don't have the $$$ they may not be in the series at all

well that's just pointless, what's the point in having a printer that doesn't print on CD's?
There is an advantage about having a printer at home, and that is being able to print when you wont to, you don't have to worry about spending it in and waiting for it. I can just click on print and the printer will jump in to life and away it goes.
The only problem is colour management. it's just takes alot of time to get things right. normaly what I do is make my monitor match the output of the printer. it seems to be a too common thing these days that photography just stay on the the net or pc. all good photos are worth printing. :)

Thanks Tony -- borrowed Pete's... although not sure whether my system has a glitch in it... the calibration warning popped up saying "... could not calculate the gray point" or something like that.... but my screen now seems fine.

MattL
22nd of October 2006 (Sun), 21:41
AdobeRGB. I have somewhere the correct profiles for their printers too - so its a completely colour managed process.
Not that it really matters as I dont pay anywhere near as much attention as I should to my colours.. Some of them are pretty funky lol.
They have a section on their website devoted to colour management, and If you spend large amounts of coin their like I do, they will be very helpful with any questions you have.
