here's a question for you all. how many of you have a portfolio? meaning the best of the best. My web site really doesn't cover the best of the best, just the ones that I like.

Got myself a $10 "dry box" from The Warehouse for my lenses -- that beats the $100 from AC... though admittedly it doesn't have the dial to say how humid/dry the interior is... ;-)

Dunno about "sending" but you can just bowl up at Canon service (and I use that term loosely) reception & drop off your faulty stuff.
Doing it thru AC will get same results only you pick it up from this side of the bridge...

I just bowled up to the customer service counter and got my camera sorted.
If you let them know you need it back to do a shoot, and your sincere about it, they will give it an urgent turn around. Or at least they did for me.
What does it need doing to it?

Hmmm rattles brain about this one, perhaps they are too cheap to have a spare, oh wait hang on, this is a 55xx, not a 65xx, you can't change the supervisor card it is in the chassis isn't it

I can see what's going to happen. I will go to canon repair in Hamilton and they will turn around and say "we don't fix lens here you will have to sent it to Auckland"
I will leave it untill the GKPE V is finished.

What Moppie said -- just let them know that you have an upcoming shoot if you have one and they will rush things for you. They were very good about doing my battery grip & camera in a rush because I had to shoot an event for my son's school... and Canon did it in a week instead of 2.
If you don't mind driving across the bridge you will get it sooner rather than later. Sending stuff by courier gives them a 3 day excuse not to queue your camera for repairs (as I found out the first time around.

Sorry the humour got lost... The 55xx is a chassis bin & has a supervisor blade (only worth more than I get paid in a year)
The funny thing I thought was here is a silly Telco with a critical network running on a switch that they have no spares for, no maintenance contract for support, and no idea how to contact Cisco afterhours. Oh, and ring around the engineers as if they have one lying around in the back of their cars. :D

Hmmm 777, now on my wish list ;) After the weekend I have to say I did temporarily review my career choice of IT, and consider a Commercial Pilots Licence again, but apparently day to day it is more boring than driving a bus, typical day:
1. Get into plane
2. Perform pre-flight checks
3. Do "This is your Captain speaking welcome aboard etc etc announcement"
4. Move plane to end of runway hit throttle, pull back and stick on auto pilot for next 1-12 hours
5. Land plane and repeat above.
Oh and wife has done a 180 for me coming to GKPE V it looks like I may now be able to go :)
Better be quick, Simon is also a maybe, at the moment the ‘bus’ is full so we will have to make other transport arrangements.

OK, since there are so many automaotive types on here, here is a question. Should I buy a mechanical warranty with the Mondeo or not. I am already over budget and a warranty is anything from $595 - $995 depending on if I go for 1, 2, or 3 years, but if something goes wrong.......What do you think?

I have only heard two very strong sides to this story, most of the people who say absolutely are the people who have had majors go wrong (mainly jap imports with dubious pasts), others say it is a waste of money, at the end of the day it is just another form of insurance.

OK, since there are so many automaotive types on here, here is a question. Should I buy a mechanical warranty with the Mondeo or not.
My simple answer is No.
Statisticaly speaking you will never use to, or above the value of what it cost to purchase.
Either the car will never break down during the warrenty period, or, what does break down won't be covered by the warrenty.
Read them VERY carefully, they are always heavily loaded against the car owner in terms of what gets fixed.
They also put very strict conditions on servicing, usualy has to be done at an over inflated price by the dealers own service department.
Basicly they set them up so that the only things covered have an extremly low chance of every failing.
As Pete said its a bit of an insurance policy, but one that IMO is grossly over priced.

I got one from AC with my 20D, five years, only cost $150 and it looks like I am about to make a claim against it, a red wire has come loose in my CF slot that has had some of the insulation stripped off my the constand removal and insertion of CF cards, one day it may cause a real problem, best get it fixed now.
EDIT: Just phonned Canon about my mysterious red wire, they say that is not normal and should not be exposed, will cost around $200-300 if the camera didn't have an extended warranty, so mine just paid off. On the down side they need the camera for 10-15 working days :(

I got a 5 year one from AC on my original 20D - even tho I bought it elsewhere. Then I needed to get the ex warranty changed to reflect the new serial number of the replacement Canon sent me, no problem at all.
- & if you're wondering, no the ex warranty didn't cover scratching the sensor...

If they don't have it back in time theres a whole pile of SLR owners around here who could lend you one. I could always spare my 30D for a day or two (it drives the same, its just more comfy to hold).

Well I have found a printer Canons new Pro series 9000 A3 8 colour. The 10 colour is due out next year.
I had to pospone my lighting studio session with a pro protographer due to money going on a camera for daughters birthday. Did some very Hi key photos the other night with my best model. Managed to get the background pure white so I was happy with the results.

Pete, an impressive shot by Elizabeth. Dare I say 'up there' with Weka's waterfall shots, eh?
Tony, I took out a 5 yr extended warranty. No claim yet, but must check for small red wires as found by Pete.
Scott, re extended warranty, I took out a 3 year when I bought my Peugeot. As it happened, Murphy has called twice, and his total bill has exceeded the premium. Seems the 'breakdown-prone' parts have now been attended to.....unless of course Mr Murphy has another up his sleeve.
Re GKPE this weekend, I am seriously disappointed that I cannot make it.This Murphy bloke sure gets around, and sees me involved in reheasal and concert for Auckland Choral, a choir I belong to. Travel safely, all who are on the outing. Dangerous roads in that part of the world.

He has travelled the world taking photos including North Korea! Picked me up at 1pm and got home about 6.30pm, spent the afternoon at Paradise valley where they filmed some of the "Lord of the Rings" spectacular place and great for landscape photography. This is a sunset view of the Remarkables, one of my first attempts at full manual, big step for me, needs a bit of tweaking.
Whats the quickest (easiest) way to resize the pics to the 100kb to post on here, currently i do it on imageready but takes a while.

Thx Weka, He is good in that he personalises as much as possible to suit your current ability and finds out what your into on the way to the photo spots. For me i need a circular polariser and a neutral density graduated filter to help with the colours. He always shoots in raw and always checks the histogram.
Tips on using the tripod, taking macro shots, flowing water shots etc etc

It does actually look good fun and, dare I say it, the price appears quite reasonable. 3 nights accomodation plus food plus tuition for about $1K? Is that right? I can get accomodation cheaper in Qtown but I think being in a group is a must. Plus it's about an hour to Kinloch. Maybe, just maybe...

it would be good if i was not the only rep from NZ. and $1k for the tutoring and accommodation.. not bad at all... True about accomdation price but that does include food aswell.. plus you get to be with the rest of the crew.

Orcon have sharpened their pencil, they now have a "build your own" plan, three speed grades - 256/128 - $29.95 (no tolls), Unleased/128 - $39.95 (no tolls) & Unleased/Unleased - $49.95 (no tolls) + you pick the data cap and style, 200MB Free, 1GB-$5, 5GB-$10, 15GB-$20, 30GB-$40, 100GB-$130, 200GB-$220, "Zeroshock"-$20.
Overage on the above is $10 per 5GB, "Zeroshock" is that dodgy "managed" connection where they can limit certain data types etc, same as the standard "all you can eat" Xtra product. There is a $10 discount on the base if you have your tolls through them.

Aha!
Thats better, although very expensive.
What about just a case with the card reader in it and a battery, then I can get a drive from techpac.
There are lots of just cases on Ebay, about US$30-40. However the international shipping cost is also US$30-40.
