Duncan you still alive?

Apparently... been dealing to a hedge with a trimmer today. The arms are feeling the effects now, not as fit as I shuld be...

Hmmmm.....30D is now on canon nz web site. The site implies that it is available now.

Auckland camera have them ($2299) - gazed at it today on my way to the lens department. Came away with a "nifty" :p

Wow, $2299... Just $200 from what I bought the 20D... Geez, cameras depreciate far faster than cars these days... I'll hang onto my 20D for another couple of years... or until the shutter breaks... then I'll grab the newer models... whatever those may be...

He also needs to look at www.pricespy.co.nz (http://www.pricespy.co.nz) -- there are other retailers that offer a 1 year NZ warranty at far cheaper prices compared to Auckland Camera or Photo Warehouse. I bought mine from a computer retailer. Canon apparently are exploring IT vendors as alternative retailers given that people are more computer savvy these days.

Canon NZ may be able to help you with finding the nearest place to clean your sensor. Main phone no.: 4890300. Photographic Service: 4890362

After Duncan's experience I'm actually re-thinking whether I should try the copperhill method. Someone across the ditch will send it over for some $65.00 sensor swabs and all...

Well, it does look like you are over it. We wouldn't tell you that you have good pics if you didn't... We will always say things how they are... that is why we're here -- to learn and impart learning. If your work is crap then maybe you will get a PM or a critique... all par for the course.

So I was around at Tony's talking about stuff, and came up with this idea:

How does everyone feel about having a GKPE weekly (or monthly) challenge? What I mean is, at the begining of the week we come up with an assignment, and everyone goes away and shoots a photo (or 2 or 3) and posts them. At the end of the week we criteque each others photos and hopefully we all learn something out of it.

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions for the first assignment? I'll start a new thread if it looks like there is some interest in this.

I'd def be interested in a monthly thing, especially over winter, but since i'm only doing photography now I could probably do one soon. Obviously if it were "take the best photo you can at Piha" it'd be more difficult. Weekly ones maybe.

Given that the Cali meetup has probably 10X the members of our group I'd say we're ahead per capita:lol:

GKPE Fortnight Challenge -- that sounds good.

My 2 cents:

The challenges should be structured so that we don't need to drive more than, say 30kms., to find something to shoot. It should probably be about day-to-day things we take for granted, e.g., circles, squares, triangles, your back yard, pets, and whatnot. This will challenge us to see things differently, as well as creatively.

Image manipulation should be limited to levels, curves, USM... This will "force" us to think more about composition, creativity, & exposure, rather than taking 101 pictures and hope something good will pop up, or something that PS(CS) can fix.

And now, to have breakfast...

Hi Everyone,
Just thought I would act like a complete newbie and post a hello to everyone here. Recently purchased my first serious digital camera (20D) and was pointed to these forums by Wazza.

So a little bit about me...
Currently living in Wellington, working full time for an IT company and going out taking shots when I can. Used to do a bit of film photography but have moved to digital and hoping to get some of my skills up and possibly sell some shots here and there.

If anyone wants to take a look at some of my recent newbie shots you can here: http://marshal26.deviantart.com/

Hoping to possibly meet up with some people in the Wellington region where I can leech some knowledge and tips from and possibly go out on shooting sprees (does that sound violent to you as well?). Also heading up to Auckland at the end of April for a week and will bring the camera along and see what I can capture.

Hiiiidehoo Marshal - welcome to the GKPE section of POTN (the most important section ;) ) And welcome to POYN itself

I know your brother well, infact, I've seen your brother crawling down town, in a drunken stupor, after a hard night dancing to "hit me with your rhythm stick' and 'whip it' (he'll hit me for saying so).

You can't go wrong with the great advice from most of the kiwi crew here. You'll learn to ignore me, and pay attention to the blokes ;)

Make sure you grab my number of Jimmy for when you're up and myself, Wazza and any of the other POTN crew who want to, will have a GKPE meet Marshal meet thing at the end of April.

Now that's a little disturbing. Seems like he's changed a little bit since I left or that I just never get told these stories. Might have to keep in contact with you and Wazza to hear all the latest stories so I can make fun of him (not letting him know that you told me of course ;))

... eyepieces instock for the 20d?

I have spare Canon ones - NZ$20. Also an eyecup version.

email deleted... if interested

I now apply a small piece of double-sided tape to the eyepiece - adheres enough to prevent accidental detach, or twist to break latching. It can still be removed with steady pressure.

You'll get the hang of the 20D in no time, then you wont want to give it back.. that's if you havent got to that stage already ;)

Did you not capture the Pukeko? Shame if you didn't. I used to have a pet Pukeko - named pooky :p I rescued it when it was baby after a dog attacked it's nest.. (my dog, bad dog)

Moppie

I got some shots of it, but nothing really useable.

I deffinitly need to start sharing some of the shots Iv got, the 20D is functionaly that different to my A80, I just forget about the little things like being able to use ISO400 and get really clear photos, or things like camera shake at slow shutter speeds on the longer zooms, and I still catch myself trying to compose useing the LCD :o

A pet Pukeko could be interesting, they arn't general friendly to people.

iKirst
22nd of March 2006 (Wed), 17:27
It's hard to re-train yourself after using a non SLR for so long, eh. Took me yonks to start to understand the 20D, and I still use a bit of the 'hit and miss' method with composing a shot.
Some folks can just stare at a scene and know exactly what the apature, shutter and ISO should be set to (1 guess who). No fair

I'd still like to see how you're faring with the big canon, Moppie :D

Pooky was pretty funny, and a great conversation piece ;) It was the neurotic chicken that was more fun though (Chickles - I'm so creative, heh). She followed me everywhere, lived on my head, sunbathed with me (preparing herself for that slow roast at the end of her life?), I have a story about her, but it's neither the time, nor the place

I can usualy do that, the only time I get confused is when shooting in doors, as I tend to underexpose
However, Im used to metering everything at ISO 50 or 100, as 200 or 400 is a bit of a joke on my A80. The idea that its a useable reality on the 20D has yet to sink in, so I forget its there :)
I also tend to know exposures for around F5-7, the idea of being at 200mm and being able to use F2.8 is also something new to me.

I tell you what I really love, is the flash, its a whole world apart from the amount of control I had with the A80, and of course I bounce it!!!!
If I could fit a 580EX to my A80 I would be very, very, very happy :D

You're not the only one. After having a few years break from photography I've forgotten a fair chunk and that natural sense of being able to gauge a shot. Since I got my 20D I've just been fooling around with all sorts of different settings to see what looks best, have some I took recently that I thought turned out alright. Just need some PP and will try to post them here.

I was actually requested to shoot the "games" after they liked my pics of their Swimming Festival last week... They actually wanted to pay me but I said that it was a good time to get more practice... besides, it was my way of contributing to the school. The kids had heaps of fun... a blast really.
