Did anyone just see the 'breaking news' on tv3's nightline - they said there will be more on it tomorrow.

The cops stopped a silver lamborghini outside a tavern (I think in Auckland), and while they were arresting the guy driving it (didn't catch why) and had him on the ground by the car, another guy leapt in the car and drove off with it :D That is one brave car thief!

EDIT

Ok, turns out it wasn't a lambo, but was a chrysler crossfire (still expensive), and whoever stole it crashed it (I don't think it was too bad tho), wonder if they will put both of them in one police cell LOL :)

sounds desperate, tell ya what - I'll give you a call tomorrow & see what I can do.
You working tomorrow or off?

On another topic, nice weather we're having: a gentle zephyr blowing across the city. So gentle that the neighbours' 7 meter high tree in back yard has uprooted & fallen over. Luckily for all it missed damaging anything. Photo's at 11...

Cool, cheers mate - but as its near on 2am and i've just staggered^H^H^H^H^Hwalked in the door, try not to disturb too early! heh

Bugger about the fence, goodthing you were not too close!

Can I get some feed back on this?

Who is Andrew Hales???:p Pic looks a little stretched horizontally. I would also change the font to something more readable -- like Andrew Script, Andy (not because you're "Andrew") Comic Sans Serif, Bradley Hand, etc.

Our new backyard ornament...

It doesn't look damaged at all from what I can see, just resting a couple of branches on the top rail. Luckily there's a 200mm dia branch on the other side that's holding it all off the ground.

we's all good, apart from myself being Mr Grumpy 'cos I failed my Cisco exam today  oh well, I know where I went wrong & will have another go in a coupla weeks.

Glad to hear no one is hurt or any of the property is damaged. Good luck on your exam!

Yep... everything has gone quiet. Some of you know where I live... and I have second thoughts now with the way the wind was ripping through the reserve and going straight for the house:rolleyes: I guess I am lucky not to have the roof flying off... Now, off to cut some branches before they decide to really bang into my roof big time.

Tough question - It's a pretty expensive piece of kit to just chance it, especially given it won't be covered under warranty if it fails. Might be prudent to put it in for a check and ask for a quote before they actually do any work.
Having seen what water does to circuit tracks in terms of corrosion it could be a ticking timebomb - or it could be perfectly fine. There isn't any idea of what amount of moisture actually got in (and maybe still trapped) until they take it apart. On the bright side, it was fresh water not salt-water so if dried out properly won't be as corrosive.
I'd send it in...

The Photo is a little streched, but its the font I was having a hard time with.
Ill try your suggestions when I get home, before taking it to Harvey mormon for printing.

Im open to any other ideas, as well as some font locations, Iv only got a very limited selection on my PC for some reason.

What Duncan said... Just make sure you ask them to give you a quotation before doing anything... then again, you won't have a choice if they tell you that the circuits are damp and need to be dried... worse case is that you are without the 5D for a couple of weeks.

Well the township is pretty damn boring, so I have to mean the race track :)

Iv got an opertunity to shoot a private race day on Sunday, and should have reasonably unlimited acess to most of the infield.
Not a lot of cars involved, and they will all be running on thier own just for ****s and giggles, so no competitive racing.

I'd go inside hairpin - they not likely to know where the braking points are and you could/should see some interesting entry/exit lines. From there you can wander back towards the pits and get some head-on shots looking back that way.

That has been my idea for a while, I just went through and found his site amoung a bunch of other auckland photographers.

A style is developed. I am a baby with photography I have so much to learn, develop etc. This is not a instant thing this is a life time venture. I need others ideas to get me started. I have no idea how to direct or visualise the end product. The thing I do have is the balls to follow my dreams and an attitude to win. I will make it to the top even if it kills me doing it.

as for your web site use jAlbum for creating the gallery's, it's quick and simple. the main problem is the front page. I am against having a page that where you get someone to click on enter, if they go to your web site they should already be in it. that's just one extra click someone my not like to do and go some where else.

Figure out the style you would like have for the site and the card. I would go with the style of writing you have already, but I am not a fan of blue. I would either do silver or gold? today I would go with silver.

I was the same as you. it created a better way of display the photos and it even does the thumbnails.

one of things I like about is the fact that it comes up with the photos number 1-12 for example and bingo no matter which photo you are looking at you have a point of reference and way seeing others.

I am going to be using it in the future.

Thanks for picking up this site - I like many of the shots, and so too does my wife.

There was nothing like that at Victoria Battery when GKPE V was there!

Yes his work is very classy. Woman for me are not sex objects, they are creatures of beauty.
You could hang his work in your lounge and thats where I want mine to hang. I want photos that would make a woman proud to display.

So ideas re my web site?

From the most NIT (non IT) guy here can I make a suggestion. If you decide to keep the front page can you get rid of these at the bottom of the page...

as it's a pain scrolling down to find nothing. Also...can you make the image slightly narrower as it creates horizontal scroll bars on my screen
and there's no need to.

Another thumbs up here for Jalbum.

Mario, we haven't seen you around for a while.
Yep: the last few weeks were very busy and rich of good and bad news.
Starting from the worst news: my wife decided that she did not want to live in New Zealand any more. We also played a movie-style performance when, after buying a one way single ticket for Italy, at the very last moment, after checking in her luggage at the airport, she did not leave!
The "good" news are that all this turmoil happened just when, for the first time, I began to receive some interested answers from the schools where I applied. I was finally given the opportunity to settle for good in New Zealand, as I deeply wished, but I could not seize it. :(
Anyway: Laura accepted to delay her coming back to Italy for few months provided that I'll come back with her, at the end of this summer. So, now I intend to take the best from this last few months in New Zealand: at the end of November we'll leave the apartment in the North Shore and we are going to have a long journey in the South Island. My hope is to be able to change her mind. I'll try everything I can until I can.

If you are selling your 350D and 10-22, you are either selling off your gear to pay the rent, or you went a bought a 5D. I hope it is the latter.
Well, it's the latter! In the last two months I did not work but we still have enough money in the bank to enjoy our stay in New Zealand before the end my sabbatical year.

About the camera: as a matter of fact i am still undecided between 5D and 1DIIn. Anyway, whatever I'll eventually choose, if these are my last months in New Zealand I do NOT want to miss a single shot! And I need to purchase a really *big* toy in order to try to console myself. the nice landscape was good in the last effort (a photo is good for a photo website (sets the scene so to speak). And with your name under it, maybe try to make the word photography smaller and place it under your last name. (keep the font it is now thou)

thats much better.. i do think that the word Photography could do with being smaller and that font appear to be pixelated esp the A and the Y.

The page loads very quickly (which is a great thing). I assume that you are going to put some links to navigate through the rest of the pages.

the Y and the T almost touch and this is a little distracting for some reason. I would also make all the text the same colour

for those that are interested. found that with the sigma lens attached at 100mm the lens is back focusing. I focused on a plant 5m away, at 300mm it's spot on @ 100mm not so.

http://www.cuthbert.net.nz/potn/IMG_5214.jpg

What you see on the left is the flower focused at 300mm and then zoomed out to 100 and then shutter released. the one on the right is focused at 100mm and then the shutter released. no post processing.

so the question is, is this a problem with the camera or with the lens?

now also don't forget that I have a problem with the 28-135 focusing going from one extreme to another.

joeseph

Dunno if focussing at one focal length then zooming to another length is a valid test - either for Canon or Sigma. Probably best if you set zoom first, then focus...

theflyingkiwi
12th of November 2006 (Sun), 00:06
you know I had thought of that too, but my distance to the subject hasn't changed. But it seems strange that I get a sharper picture after getting focus and zooming to the desired length, than focusing on the subject and then taking the shot. if you know I mean

So you changed focal length with out refocusing?

Depending on the lens design, some will change the focus just a little when you change focal length. So if you need to refocus after changing focal length.

Anyway, I just had a FANTASTIC day :)

yep you got that right, it show you how much I understand about photography. but that being the case, it should be the one on the right that should be in focus and the one on the left should be out of focus?

congrats on the $$$, the good thing is you know what you are doing behind the camera so I am sure they will be happy about it.

But your distance to the subject *has* changed. The distance from the inside of the lens element will be different due to the zooming. Depending on lens design, this can make a big difference.

Zoom, then focus. Always.

Even the whole focus on a different point (using only a single AF point) then recomposing can throw your focus off to make it soft as the distance has changed (maybe only 50mm, but still)

A test of this sort needs:
1. A sturdy tripod - and being used. We rock back and forth too much.
2. Either remote shutter release cord, or use timer.
3. Focus on 1-shot mode.
4. Aperture wide to give narrow area of focus.
5. A graded target from in-front-of to behind the focus plane.
6. Zoom to one end, half-shutter, pause, then take shot. (Assuming that the focus is on the default shutter button and not the back button.)
7. Zoom to other end, and repeat. Zooming alters the metrics of the elements in the lens - the focus will require adjusting. No focus lock, or holding shutter half-down while zooming (although those actions may be programmed to cancel the focus).
Anything else? - ideally capture in raw and convert to preserve sharpness. JPEG is a blurring or smudging algorithm.

Hi there!
Anyone interested in a used 350D and/or a 10-22mm?

Happy belated birthday! Sent you a pm...

I am sure you guys are going to end up hating me by the end of this.

ok, I was thinking some more (which in itself is dangerous) so I decided to see how much back focus the lens has a problem with. but before I finished I connected the flash and did a test. Knowing that with the flash connected the camera auto focuses better and as you can see by the white balance :) the top photo is the cameras auto focus and the bottom is with the flash connected. so does this mean I got a problem with the camera?

Doesn't look like its focussed on anything?

Congrats on your 2000th post, by the way.

thanks, wow 2k in posts. I knew I was getting up there, but I thought I still was a few posts away. oh well.

believe it or not the camera in this case is focused right where it should be, in the middle of those 2 squares.

Mark, you first shots were in daylight, so I wouldn't expect the lighting to be a problem.

Are you using a tripod and timer?

It is possible to force a shot before focus is achieved, which is fixed by half-shuttering then holding before full-shutter. Presumably the timer mode will take care of that aspect.

How far away from the end of the lens was the paper? Did it actually give you focus confirmation? Cause to me, it looks like... well... bad.

By the way - you are making sure that the minimum focussing distance is maintained? Not that it changed on those two target shots.

I note that the Exif data does not include lens details, not surprising for a non-Canon lens perhaps. But it also does not have the focus mode setting.

You aren't on manual focus??

Yep, I guess I should have added that. but yep full tripod with remote cord attached.

edit: yea I am on full auto mode. the picture is a combo of two so the exf data isn't included.

Yep, I have enabled the beep so focus lock was confirmed by the beep and by the square flashing.

from the front element to the bar in the middle of the square is about 3.8 meters away, which the lens is also reporting. However I do notice that the lens when I was taking the shot without the flash reported that it was on 4 meters.

edit again,

the two photos can be found here http://www.cuthbert.net.nz/potn/352CANON/

The "reasonable" second shot is still quite soft for 100mm.

What about trying several zoom settings, and closing the aperture to f8 to bring the lens more to its optimum operation.

And compare with, say the 100mm macro
