Mark send it back and tell them to fix it. You are going to get the same results if you stand on your head....its out and it need fixing, you want me to ring them and sort them out for you  .
I love sorting companys out, taken microsoft on twice and end up with very expensive software for free both times.

Mark, I agree with Tony. But I would arm myself with shots using another lens to show that the lens and not the camera is failing.
I should have spotted that there was only one image - but the exif data is in there - the non-flash data.

Sigma Lens
http://www.cuthbert.net.nz/potn/sigma_IMG_5236.jpg
I would send it back but I wont to make sure that it's the lens causing the problem and not the camera.
to me it seems funny that I got better focus at 300 than 100 and at 100 I got better focus with a flash attached? that just doesn't make sense. If the lens was faulty at 100 shouldn't I get the same results if the flash was attached?
However if the camera auto focus is out then wouldn't that explain some of the problem?

Mark I have a solution to your problem. Get hold of NZfritz and ask him if you can borrow his 5D and test again your glass that will tell you whats off.

congrats on the $$$, the good thing is you know what you are doing behind the camera so I am sure they will be happy about it.
Well I justed sorted the images, I just sorted 228 keepers (from about 600 shot on the day) I think I need to have a resort!
Althouh, since they have bought a CD, and I know there were multiple drivers of the same car, Iv included lots of shots of the same cars from different runs.
Ill post a few after some PP tomorrow.

Mark - you should have gotten much better results from the 100mm macro at f4.
The 10D uses the viewfinder screen to minimise the confusion around lines of contrast, and if it has beeped, then it thinks that has been done. Minimum achievable may still be well out.
I would carefully check and clean the contacts on the camera body's lens mount, just in case that is the problem.
Otherwise, the camera needs repair, I fear.

We went to have a look at the home in Huia 40min drive without traffice, views and area phototogs dream. To far out for me. On the way back saw a private sale went it and I want it only $440k 5 min out of titarangi

Mark now do you understand why I only buy "L" glass. I dont have time for consumer grade quality. Add to that that they sent it back and said it was fine does not impress me at all throw in the fact that they tested on a 1.6 cropped camera. [EOR=end of rant]
Speaking of consumer grade glass, how much has your L glass earned you in the past 12 months?
Even my A80 earned me a couple of hundred $$$.
Which reminds me, I can't make it on the 19th, Iv been told by the father in law I have to dig drains I don't think we need (the house has lived with out them for 20 years, and we live on a well drained hill). So how about I try for half a day off work on Friday and you do the same?

So did you have fun shooting motorsports. should we expect you to come to the super v8's next year?
that brings up the next important question, is anyone coming down for the rally. I got a friend and a mate who has got press pass, but it looks like I am out of action :(

when I first started testing I had cleaned the contacts, which ended up making no difference. I had started to fear the same thing. Once I got the sigma back I used the macro lens again and wasn't to sure. this time the testing I have done is more concert.
in saying that tho the 10D has been in use for 3 years with out any problem until recent. it would be close to 50k in clicks.
edit: what's the next GKPE challenge?
double edit, thanks everyone for helping me out with my camera problem.

Tony, I agree that "L" is the only way to go, if you can, but I can't, so I don't!
What Mark is getting is below consumer grade, and his comparison shots with the sharp Canon 100mm Macro f2.8 are not acceptable for that lens.
He may still find that the Sigma needs sorting, when he gets his camera back.

Tony, IMHO designing your site by commitee like this is a bad idea! You will never get it finished. Some one will always tell you there is something wrong, or you should do it this way, or that. You could end up making minor tweaks to the first page for months to keep everybody on here happy. Just ask Pete about the GKPE page!

Tony, my page is designed simply. I use text on the page and one image background. simple is good :)
the background image is just that, a background image. It wont change size depending on the window size. It's always going to look the same.
But basis of my web site is for 800x600 desktop. even tho most people use a large screen than that these days even if the window isn't maximized it will still look good.

I know what your saying.
I've not read last few pages and may be repeating others, but I think the word 'PHOTOGRAPHY' fair shouts at the viewer, with its big bold capital letters. The panorama is a tranquil scene not matched by subtlety in the title. It's almost as if you suspect the viewer has to be reminded that the website is about photographic art.

1) yeah, glow on the word photography looks bad. Also as someone else has just said, its seems to be shouting a bit too much, have a bigger play with fonts etc.
2) you need to set the margins to 0, i dont know what sort of software you are using for this, so RTFM.
3) Tired, keeping very busy with work, play, beer, beer, and trying to find someplace new to live.

Tony your photography is much , much better than your website design.
The front page is good, simple and easy to use, However the about me page is just wrong.. it makes you look like a wannabe not a pro. (no offence)
The link to your other website - shows some excellent photos, use them to sell what you can do.
I would also change your about me page to a simple contacts page.
Name , email , phone (0800 number is good) , PO Box , and don't tell people that this is going to be the next stage of your life.
maybe have a couple of feedbacks from customers on this page.
Your photos are your art not your writing or design skills.
Your gift and skill is photography so Show me the art.
Choose say 10 photos and display them, use the web space as your gallery, rotate images often, this is what will get you bookings.
Sorry to sound so negative over your work, but if this is going to be your shop window, it needs to draw me in to your shop.
I have had five gos at designing my site and hated all of them, hence why its not up yet. Tell me p*ss off if you want , but in my opinion the site is just not professional as it is at the moment. Sorry

Sorry

For a photographers website i'd probably expect to see something that people couldn't easily get without a lot of knowledge or equipment. A higher lighting ratio left:right perhaps, I think I could take a photo like that with my A70 and natural light. Not that it's not a good photo, just not what i'd expect to see.
Im gutted I thought I looked quite good...now Im just plain

Anyway I have a few models lined up. I am looking at afternoons, simple in the park type shots to start. Get the basics correct first. Then move on to other bits.
How long did it take you guys to get to the gorgethe other week? I have a model who sees that asa halfway point for her and me. Waterfalls + Model
I was looking at freedyC style.

Tony, you should do the trip in 1.5hrs.
You might find that the Victoria Battery, which can be walked to from the falls, or from the Waikino Station end, could provide some excellent outdoors locations.
If you want an assistant to help with reflectors, or unwanted spectators, etc, I could help. There's no doubt you can handle heavy-duty security, but that can take you away from the shoot.

You expect people to pay you to do what you do well. Extend that to other people - pay someone for doing what they do well - design websites that sell your product. Look for one who implements a variety of styles, and brief them. They have the marketing skills to grab people's attention.
Tim didn't say that you look plain. He suggested that a rather more dramatic lighting would better represent the skills you want to sell.
Few people live out the trauma of setting up a business in such a public way. None of us are your target market, but those with commercial experience in contract photography should be listened to.
I'm not in that category, so don't listen to me!

i think you should get a pro to design it, budget for it. Give them the ideas you have but allow them to produce a site for you.
i think i have heard you say once or twice you get what you pay for and you will now only buy quality. This site is going to be a integral part of business, so get a pro to help. Short term its costs long term it pays off. ;)

Depends what sort of site you want... they do online system management stuff, and just one page sites... what ever you want really they will do. if you check out www.auckland4wd.org.nz or www.fancythatgifts.co.nz or www.ableappliances.co.nz that is some of their work you will have to get quotes for what you want to do
Just to let you know I didn't take any of the photos on any of those sites, I think... I'm working on the fancythat photo's at the moment but haven't uploaded any of them yet

i too am happy with the 70-200, i want a shorter 'L' and a longer 'L' say a 300 or a 400, an extender is on my list at some point.
i am thinking may be a
mono pod
a 300mm 'L'
flash gun (580ex)
1.4 extender
(might get a secondhand 500mm)
so that leaves a shorter lens or may be 2.

The 400mm F5.6 is sharp light and works with 1.4 TC but manual focus unless you have a 1D series
300mm You could use the 70-200 with TC 1.4

I plan to return to the cyanide tanks at Victoria Battery soon to put a bit more effort into getting good shots.
One problem is getting enough light on the funnel without blowing out the concrete. I want to use the 550EX inside the concrete footing but still trigger it by the ST-E2 remote. At a range of 11 metres, I can trigger the flash which is out of sight. A mirror can be used to reflect the IR signal! The mirror was positioned so that looking along the camera line, the flash receiver could be seen centrally in the mirror.
It was tested with the mirror and fired every time, and without the mirror, and would not fire.
To save carrying a glass mirror, I will test again using my 33" foldout reflector. That might be harder to position correctly, if it works at all.
