nice.. before you know it you will be charging them for your time..

I will spend a year doing TFP and free sittings. Money is not as important as getting the basics correct.

Like a house foundations need to be solid, sand can compact very well but needs to have piles deep.

Nzshrimper
15th of November 2006 (Wed), 16:25
Actually, sand can be a very good foundation for a house :D

Or so the architect I work with told me the other day.
i believe this is true, however it takes a huge amount of prep to ensure there is now slippage or subsidences, esp in earthquake prone countries. as sand can go into a liquidise type of state if agitated.

As an earthquake strikes, it deforms the soil, changing the volume of the soil. If water is present, water pressure may build up in the pore space between the soil grains. What was once a solid foundation begins to flow like a liquid, a process called soil liquefaction. As the soil moves, foundations become unstable, and Earth's gravity wins out -- collapsing buildings, bridges and other structures.

I was wondering what you were smoking, the cheap copies cost about $36, when you can find them.
The genuine Canon ones are over $100.

Well you can't always be right... so I was told

The idea being that if you build with a concrete base on top of sand, the sand will not shift much even in an earthquake, and if it does, you get a sort of "insulating" factor, because it is shifting sideways instead of being torn apart.

It's funny you know. When I had my D30, that's all I had. I sold that to help pay for the 10D. Never did I feel I wanted or needed a back up. Why do I feel I need one now?

Make an offer....like mentioned earlier it has grip, 2 batteries, dual charger and a couple of lenses I don't need. It won't go on TM as I can't be bothered.

I tested the ST-E2 remote flash transmitter today, with the flash around the corner, and the 33" Popup Reflector. Works fine. The only problem was getting the right angle. It has to be fairly accurate to work, I found.

The crumpled finish to the reflector did not show the 550EX from the camera, as the mirror had done, but the flash in slave mode emits a red pulse every second, and its reflection can be seen from the camera.

As stated origionally, I am still on my "L" plates (learners that is not expensive glass). I do have some questions regarding a lens that I have but I need to perform some test shots with it before asking for assistance/advise. It is a Sigma 70/200 2.8 that I think my not be focusing properly or it may be my camera.

When I get the chance, I will ask for your advice.

If you have 10D, 20D, 30D or any of the 3 diget series Sigma 70-200F2.8 is a good start.
If you own a 5D or 1D series there is only 1 Sigma that I would recommend 120-300F2.8

Sorry Mark, for some reason I keep getting logged out and have to re-log in, I must have some setting wrong somewhere.
How are conditions looking for the Rally in the weekend. I had been thinking of trying to catch a couple of stages on Sunday (got an exam on Saturday). I have not taken any motorsport photo's, have enough problems catching up with slow/non moving objects

Now I'm not special anymore. However, you'll want L glass.
So you are the other one Weka2000 was talking about. 1D or 1Ds, in your case?

BTW, you are right: it's heavy, but it perfectly fits even my small hands. And of course I do have some good L glasses to attach! And a POTN strap. ;)
At the end of the month I'm leaving Auckland to the South Island. I'll spend there about a month and a half and I'm definitely going to enjoy my new camera there! :)

Hello everybody

My name is Mark Vuleta, a South Island born Aucklander living in Manukau.

I have been a member to this forum for a couple of months now and have found it very interesting and informative.

I am fairly new to photography and am keen to learn much much more.

I was unaware that there was such a strong New Zealand content to this forum (I have not been through all seven hundred odd pages).

This is the first time I have posted anything on this forum so excuse my nervousness (if that can come accross over the net) or any etiquite errors on my behalf.

My main interest is basically taking good photo's as a hobby.

I look forward to talking with you in the future and learning all I can gleen from your vast experiance.

Regards

Mark Vuleta

Welcome to the GKPE part of the forum! ... and to the older spectrum of the group:lol: You can see from Tony's comment below that there are a few of us who've just hit the prime of life... everything is now downhill for us:lol:

Keep an eye out for mini-GKPEs -- these are your spur of the moment, 30 minute notice outings to shoot sunsets or whatever.

Fire away with your questions and I'm sure a few of us will jump in. Just don't ask Tony for his opinion on lenses:p

I had a disaster of a night..

I formatted my 80Gb Vosonic drive, just while I was packing everything for the rally, and then I broke it..

Only just now I realised, it must be Fat32, which windows won't do, unless you're on a Windows 98 machine, which quite likely won't have USB 2.0 or even 1.1... So I just found a utility, formatted, and now it works!! I'll be going down first thing tomorrow morning now with a friend.

What's new? - Well I've been reading random bits, during some free time, but probably spent 90% less time on these forums and some other sites...

Trying to keep away from Myspace.com, I've created a blog, www.warrenwilliams.co.nz/blog - that was the other day, so may try some skins, see what looks best..

The drifting final is this Sunday at Pukekohe...
So rather busy.

Work is so so...

4 weeks is officially the longest without a post. :D
Previous best was around a week when I was in the South Island, I managed to get to an internet cafe in Christchurch.

I've been checking your site from time to time.

Great stuff that you're doing your own site now.
Keep it as you like, whatever you're comfortable with.

Just remember to fit in with the general public..
http://stat1.traceics.co.nz/stat/ikirstcom/sistem/#browser

Those stats show average viewing size..

I personally found on 1024x768 the page is a squeeze, and would possibly make the images and the top text slightly smaller, so there's some black edges around.

I won't make much else, coz I personally know what it's like to have everyone say something about your own site, when you have something you like yourself.
- PS. Have you tried different text at the bottom? You've currently got the default,

try Tahoma and Verdana, both slightly more bold and stand out.

And PPS. - add a meta tag so you can be googled, and Tony Searle - Photography (or something, in your title)

Everything else however, as with your photos, is your own uniqueness, follow the design of what you're happy with yourself, including the covering image. :)

Kirst has been really busy lately, and tired.

We currently see each other Friday nights and Saturday..

Tomorrow, however, was planned that I was in Hamilton, which I've postponed a day, instead of today, and she's going to Waiheke this weekend for her sisters Hen's party - only 6 weeks before Fiji!!!!!!!

Sunday, she may come along to the final couple hours of the drifting finals...
After all free media pass.

The following weekend is Auto Salon, so we'll pop along to that on Saturday.

Assisting a wedding on 2nd December, but I need to find a Off Shoe cord temporarily.

Iv got a modified one you can borrow, but it might be a bit tempramental for wedding use (I used cheap plugs).

Why aren't motorsport activities marketed properly in Auckland? No wonder there is limited surport for them.
I might come along to the Auto Saloon, have to be there early to beat the crowds though, be a good test of the 17-70 and 550 :D

Drifting is front inside cover of Performance Car this week - I think it's free advertising..

And the Rally?
Man the courses are poorly down.. No side roads etc, this year vantage points are sometimes before the start of the rally.. Not a spectactor sport as in past years, or even other countries rallies

Moppie
16th of November 2006 (Thu), 16:02
There has a really disturbing trend by Rally NZ to get more and more controll over spectator access to the event, mostly in the hope of making money out of it.
By law they can not charge for access to the road stages, because they are still public roads. While the stages maybe closed, they have no control over the access roads.

Because of our rather distant location, and the rising costs of WRC, we are always at risk of losing the WRC event, but have always managed to keep it because of how well organised, and how well run its been, and because the drivers love NZ, and the NZ crowds.
You would only need to remove one of those aspects to lose the event, and it would be a huge blow to NZ if we did. Its the worlds largest annual sporting event, and is worth millions.

Wet wet wet. At the WRC

I paid $20, and watched Stage 8.
I went to Stage 6, but the asses had closed the road off 2 hours before the cars were even due through there, and I only wanted to see the cars at the start, so decided to wait at the "Road Closed" sign, where the drivers, INCLUDING Valentino Rossi stopped and took a piss. May have to post this shot in G&N. Will edit and post the shots bit later..

So one stage later, got a few photos, and nice candids of Rossi. :)
