That sucks. IT should bring in a bit more than that, then I know people who have taken cuts in their pay heading down to Chch. You could try contracting, more flexiblity and better rates too, I am contracting to one major customer - AirNZ for around 35-45 hours a week, plus a couple of other IT clients, around 5-20 hours extra a week, plus some photo work (product shooting). Makes for a busy life style, but then I have paid off more than half the $23000 car I bought 8 months ago :D

Give them a nice warm Pine Tarsol soak in the tub just before bed and they will love you for it. It does stink a bit but it takes care of the itches. The boys had theirs a year or so ago and they were sleeping through the night.

We would like to buy a house and the bank says yes no worries have a $300k plus but the repayments on that are just scary. Once the kids are at school then we will be comfortable but thats another 2.5 years away.... .

Quick question how old are you?

We are in the same situation bank will lend but we have to pay it back.
Its all relative to where you live. Higher wages = higher house prices.

As I got older I became content with having a wife, 2 lovely daughters and a roof over my head that we could afford. A job I enjoy and enought money for my hobbies. Sure I dont drive a flash car nor live in a flash house.
What I am is free and flexiable. For me the bird cage never has a door that is closed.

We dont want a flash car or a flash house. She has a good stable job and to be honest so do I. I just want to get out of renting, start putting money aside to live happly when we retire. And to be able to enjoy the kids. Dont get me wrong life is great now (compared to the last 5 years).

Pine Tarsol helps reduce itching and skin flaking. It is a solution you can purchase at the chemist - just tell them you need it for chicken pox itching. You will need to dilute it in the tub before the kids get in. We used 10-20mls for a half full tub... but check the instructions depending on the pine tarsol strength. Warning: the water will look really yucky brown and smell but the kids get used to it especially when it is warm and nice to sit in. The boys soaked for 15-30minutes and were off to sleep shortly thereafter.

Same age as me :), Shona is younger than me though.

Have you set out your goals, and I mean write them down, there is something about writing down goals that gives them 'power'. I have been doing that for the last 12 odd years of my professional career, and when I get them onto paper I achieve my goals without fail. Keep it simple focus on no more than five at a time, have some short term, longer term personal and professional, get yours wife's input and reality check!

It seems in order to succeed in IT you need to develop a good reputation in the industry, and there are some tricks to doing. The easiest way to start seems to be getting attached to a vendor/integrator that has lots of partners, this gets you in front of customers and suppliers, the other way is to get into a corporate that has lots of projects on that involve third parties. I think though you really do need to do the vendor/integrator thing at some point most people I know in IT who are playing at a high level have done so at some point, it is a different world in vendor land but they seem to be a necessary evil! I know Tier 1's Gen-I and Axon are present in Chch, not sure who else is around.

Hope that helps!

I should stop slagging xtra off, I've had to cancel my Ihug broadband in order to get a cheap phone & "unleashed" Xtra thru work. If they smell another ISP they won't allow any discount from anything.

yay Xtra! (xtra packet loss, xtra charges, xtra downtime, xtra helpdesk - you get the picture... )

That is a bit mean, Woosh perhaps? (ah no as that is cr*p as well  ) I don't know any other companies who disallow you staff discount if you use someone else.

Since when did Xtra have a helpdesk, I thought it was just a desk!

Actually on desks, here is a rough transcript of a conversation I had a couple of weeks ago with one here at work, firstly I dared phone them, I needed access to the call logging system so I could review calls assigned to me, I had used the Intranet, but they kept closing the call for obscure reasons.

"Welcome to ... If this call is not severity 1 or 2 please press 1 now, otherwise hang up and log a request via the internal Intranet site... <short wait, I didn't press 1!> Pleas hold the line."
Them: "Support, user name please"
Me: "lowdep"
Them: "loudep"
Me: "no loWdep"
Them: "lowdep" + pause + "Yes..."
Me: "I have made a request for ... access, and have urgent calls assigned to me that I need to action"
Them: "You have already logged this via the Intranet, and if you can have calls assigned to you you have access"
Me: "But I have not been provided with a logon"
Them: "According to our records we granted you access and a logon in March 2005"
Me: "Yes that was when I last worked here"
Them: "Then why did you log a request when you already had access"
Me: "I don't have access my standard logon doesn't work"
Them: "You need to log this via the Intranet"
Me: "I have THREE times"
Them: "Then you must be filling out the form incorrectly"
Me: "No, you keep closing it as completed"
Then: "Yes it was completed, according to our records back in March 2005"
Me: "But that logon doesn't work, can you reset my password?"
Them: "No we cannot do that you need to log a password reset request via the Intranet"
Me: "Can't you just do that now and save the time"
Them: "No, you need to make all requests except urgent ones via the Intranet"
Me: "This is urgent, I have calls in my queue that urgently need action that I cannot access to deal with! It the time we have been arguing you could have reset my password!"
Them: "You are in the wrong here, you left and didn't inform us you have left the company, and now you are back and expect it to just work, you need to log a call via the Intranet"
Me: "Fine." I hang up

I logged the call on the intranet and they bounced it because I didn't have a logon to reset the password for, so I logged another one to get a logon, that got bounced (by the same guy) because I already had a logon

Got access a week later by escalating via my Management, server crashed and burned, officially not my fault though. It is worth noting that the "desk" here is run by Telecom.

On a better note -- I got the job!!! Wooohooo!!! I start 2nd week of January 2007! The pay is going to be waaaaaaaaaay better than Hill & Stewart... and in the same level that I was earning before I got made redundant... so status quo...

Now, for those of you contracting... I need to pick your brains. I will be in a contracting situation since the company is in "starting up" mode. I need to know how this works... I've been an employee all my life and contracting is a whole new ball game for me...

Now off to cook dinner... and think about what notebook I need to purchase before the end of the year... I hope Hill & Stewart run one of those 24months interest free deals before I leave!!!

My "Tripper" I got mailorder from Ausy ( www.jaldigital.com.au )has been discontinued although I hear good things about Vosonic's X-drive, something like this:
http://www.flashcards.co.nz/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=26_188&products_id=164
they seem cheaper in NZ than ausy looking at these prices...

budget should be well catered for. And enough left over for spare batteries for the drive, or more flashcards!

Hmmm there is now quick answer to that one! Been a steep learning curve for me this last year. At its most simplest you get GST registered, a pay that every month/two months/six months, and do a full tax return at the end of the year or you have to pay tax immediately if you are forecasting over $35K in tax for the year, you then spice it up by lowering your income with legitimate business expenses such as car running and mobile phone, claim a chunk of you home expenses for an office etc. That is called being a sole trader, on the other hand you can form a company, a lot more to that. I am a Sole Trader, and it is working for me, projecting saving $10K in tax because of business expenses :) Need to go over it over a coffee, then you should talk to an accountant...

Next week all my free time will be post processing photos and posting to get peoples feed back.

Keeping pbase account as I can password folders so the models can see the results before they go onto my web site.

Where you been hiding

Traded my 50mm 85mm 100mm on a New 24-105 F4 L and dont regret it. Sandra since changed her mind on my model ideas so.........
Weka's off to get new glass again ;)

The 24-105 is used most of the time. Saves on sensor cleaning :)
Oh and it can handle been left out in the rain all night.

I think this has been my busiest month ever. I have taken over 3000 photos.
Mark, how many points do they get for hitting a photographer? Did he get him?

Very well thanks, It looks like I have done it, I was a bit concerned about file size, not sure how people on dial-up can put up with it these days, will never go back to that if I could ever help it!!
